    Hello sir from Ohio. I don’t usually subscribe to many channels at all, but your channel, and this video in particular, got me to click the subscribe button and hit the thumbs up quicker than I ever have any other channel. This is some really great advice here. And believe it or not more fisherman overlook this technique than you could believe. At least more than are willing to admit it 😂. It’s not only because the crappie will at certain times absolutely crush worms, but it also shows a technique that can be extremely productive when anything and everything will just not work. It’s a great technique especially in heavily pressured and overly fished areas. I also use it to land very finicky monster red ears and those bull bluegills. I use it sometimes with micro baits as well when the majority of the folks just aren’t catching ‘em. A great technique with worms, crickets, grubs, and even leeches. There’s a lot of folks in the comment section that are saying things like “Well no crap worms are good for catching fish” and that “crappies feed on anything when their schooled up and hungry” and that may be true. But try this technique when everyone else isn’t catching them left and right. That’s when this technique will absolutely work the best given the right bait on the end of your line. And I have to add that I absolutely loved your perspective and your take on how we have become so reliant on technology and the fact that common sense isn’t needed in a lot of the things we do today. So much of the simple way of life and not overthinking everything we do is just not there anymore. I for one miss it badly. This is a very good video with an even better message behind it. Listening to you talk reminds me so much of my father who is saving a spot for me up where the fish are as big as you say they are, and their always biting. I thank you for that! New sub -R.W Ohio

      We used to do this when I was a kid. The only problems is that we have so many of the little green sunfish that never get very big that just steal worms that it can become frustrating. They are like little demons that seems to hit before anything else even has a chance. We would literally go through a couple of coffee cans full of worms we dug, just to get a decent mess of bluegill. The only time I fish with worms now, is when bluegill are spawning and they protect their beds and will keep those little brats away, or at least thin them out.

      I was ice fishing on the Canadian border this winter. Tried earthworms for Perch but they wouldn't bite whereas they were going crazy for the white worms, maggots. I think it's because the earthworms were packed with earth and crap all throughout. Perch was just being picky...

    Richard, like your videos. Been fishing crappie and other fish for over 50 years, and still tune in when find out about a fishing video. Have fished Fla to Washington State, Montana to Nm and Texas, as well as point in between. Still find things that catch my interest. Only really have one problem, as live in SW NM. It is not catching crappie, can do that. The problem is turned wife on to eating crappie 5 years ago. Then she turned her then 4 yr. old granddaughter onto eating them. Now they dont want to share. I can eat the other fish but leave the crappie alone.

    I enjoy your videos so much Richard Gene so wanted to say Thank You!!! In a couple of your videos you've mentioned using an ultralight rod and in another I believe it was a light rod. I'm looking to buy a rod for crappie fishing and was wondering if you would recommend sticking with ultralight or go to a little heavier light rod? Please say hello to Elmo!!

    • @panfishfanatic1055
      @panfishfanatic1055 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know I’m not Richard, but I personally would go with the Light power rod. The reason being, you have a little bit more versatility in terms of jig weights. I fish a lot of 1/16oz jigs but sometimes when they go a bit deeper, an 1/8 or 3/16oz jig is required and the Light power rod handles those weight better than an ultralight in my opinion. The Light power rod also gives you a bit more horsepower to pull on a fish to get them out of weeds or wood or any cover, or if you hook into a bass or a bigger species, you’ll be able to fight those fish easier with that little bit heavier backbone in the rod. Hope that helps, good luck this season

    Worms are perfect for this, but, there used to be a Lure that Blue Fox used to make, a small, fat, white grub with legs you could pull off, and a short pink skirt. I used to catch a crappie on just about every cast using it on the Kern river. Those were river crappie, white crappies, in fast water, and it was as much fun as catching trout.

    I am semi-retired and new to fishing in a small country town in Wyoming. Last year, I've started purchasing some fishing equipment and only able right now, to fish at 2 local small lakes close to my home. I can only fish by shore and have no boats, etc. Since most of the fish breeds might be: cat fish, crappie, bass, walleye and maybe trout... I'm not sure how well they are stock the lake each year? I currently have 2 spinning reals and a good start of different lures right now. Since I don’t really have to many friends to go fishing all the time... I need to really understand each breed., swimming habits, best type of baits to use and fishing techniques. I came across this first on crappie fishing on TH-cam. I look forward in seeing your other TH-cam channels on other breeds to. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I am also looking forward in April to start fishing again. I had "zero" success last year.

    Great video Richard. I have caught lots of crappie on worms since I was boy. I just recently was telling a good fishing buddy what I was catching them on night crawlers and he couldn’t hardly believe it. God bless you Richard. WOOOOO

    Thanks for another great video Mr Gene! A really interesting technique to try on local waters here in Fla.! I usually use 4 and 6lb. line like Trilene XL, and those same exact hooks for minnows, so it’s time to find some worms for a try. God Bless you Richard and Mama Sue!

    CONSIDER ;
    Red wiggles ( snip 1/4" off tail & nose hook ). Also a 3/16" chartreuse bead above a # 6 hook on 6 lb fluorocarbon with a bullet sinker 12". Fish the edges. So deadly !

    • @erikr1898
      @erikr1898 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the sinker 12" up rigged like carolina or near the hook and on top of the bead?

    • @oldone3482
      @oldone3482 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@erikr1898 Yes. At winters end most fish are near the bottom. Fish light to dark water from a boat. Dark to light water from shore. Fan cast & move over two casts until you find fish. There are gathering points. When the fish hits, relax the line (hesitate), then set the hook.

    I have never seen crappie caught on worms like this. It has to be the way you hook that worm and leave it free. If I fished my lake like that, I'll have 50 Bluegill or Longear Sunfish. I was sitting here thinking you have a net around your perimeter underwater to hold all the crappie and the panfish are stacked up around the square watching through the net. Ha ha! However, I am going to try your technique and see what happens. I'll hope for crappie but I am still afraid panfish or channel cats. Ha ha!

    Hi Richard. Tony Penrod hear in Indiana.
    I love watching you and your videos.
    And everything you do, your awesome.
    I was wondering why we never see you fish with tube jugs. And should we put braid in water for a week like the other line. And how long do you like to leave your line on your reel. Love you and everything you do for us all. Keep it going baby. You have helped me so much.
    Thank you so ever much. Love you buddy.

    Mr. Machine, I was wondering if there is fishing supply companies that support your channel. You champion nikko helgamites a lot. I would like to support your supporters. I really enjoy your channel a lot. Your creek fishing videos using live bait and vintage reels are my favorite. I can’t wait till you start back making the creek videos.

    I caught a crappie off a 4” chartreuse and black pepper flake lizard. When they hungry they eat anything.
