Outstanding info Richard. The smaller shank size of a #8 hook is less stress on the bait as well as just piercing the upper part of its mouth to let it 'breathe' easier while hooked. Also lengthening the line length from the split shot to the hook lets the shad swim more freely, which drives the crappie crazy.

The rain reminds me of a time I was fishing on a dock at Monroe Lake in Indiana. The rain started, but I was catching some nice crappie. I went up to a shelter to wait out the rain. It didn't want to let up. So I remembered I had an umbrella in my truck, so I went and fetched it out...headed back to the dock, cast with my right hand. I held the umbrella under my left arm, held my rod and reel with my left hand, and reeled with my right. I kept catching fish in the rain. Hillarious to my friend who stayed at the shelter. Nice video to stir up some memories.

You don't realize how loud thunder is until you get caught out on a lake in a storm. Stayed out to long a few years back. Thought I had time to make it back, but a finger of the storm crossed the lake in between me and the boat ramp. Lightning was hitting the hillsides all around me. I had my ear pushed down against one shoulder and one hand on my other ear trying to drive the boat with my free hand. It was like I was in a war zone with bombs landing around me. The wind was so bad at the ramp the boat loaded onto the trailer half sideways leaning to one side, but I was just glad to still be alive to fish another day.

Richard don't you think hot water crappie isn't nearly as good as winter crappie? Crappie are like cattle they feed everyday but it may not last long. Sometimes you have to be on the fish when they turn on and it may not last an hour. We won a small bass tournament in four minutes then it was over.
I agree on the size of the bait for crappie, I think that is why they coexist with bass because they don't compete. When the large minnows are under my dock the crappie aren't but when the two inchers show up so do the crappie. Dock fishing was fantastic in the 90s because no one knew about it. My best day turned out 143 keeper crappie. Obviously I released them but I have a counter in the boat. I shouldn't tell on myself but I will. I never keep more than 4 for my wife and I so I thought what the heck. When Dad was alive I called to see if he and mom wanted fish and how many. To that he replied "all you can catch". It was on at this point, I flipped both live wells open on that Ranger and proceeded to load the boat. I didn't even bother with counting them. When I delivered them he said "what am I going to do with all these fish". I don't know, you ordered them. He cleaned crappie till after midnight. There were more than two 5 gallon buckets could hold. I didn't get those smart answers again. lol He was the County Executive so anything I told him went out everywhere. He couldn't know how they were caught or the numbers or I would have a target on my back. When he was out of politics I took him fishing a few times. I'm a solo fisherman for the most part.
