Starry Night and any landscape shots by any artists. I'm a sucker for a good cityscape too. Also, I can see why we don't call him Van Cock.
Edit: Also the ear cutting off thing was just a rumor, I read that he got into a fight with his brother resulting in his ear getting torn off, the story about him giving the ear to one of his beloved was made up to prevent his brother from receiving jail time. I also read he didn't shoot himself but a kid did. Vincent claimed he shot himself to prevent the kid from getting in trouble.

remember - 'van' in the dutch language represented "of", as depicted in this video. 'von', in german, indicated nobility. it was a mixup of what van meant that allowed ludwig van beethoven to be tried in the upper (noble) courts instead of the common court system!

As you're always so careful with pronunciation of foreign words, here's a new one: Theo is pronounced 'teyow'. We don't have the dental fricative and the h after the t is just vestigial from the Greek name. It also means his first letter isn't T, but Th.
We also didn't have the great vowel shift so our 'long e' is pronounced 'ey', not 'ie'.

  • @ewestner

Interesting that you pronounce "gogh" the way Americans do and not the way I've heard British people pronounce it.
Van Gogh is my favorite artist. Once I went to the MOMA in NY just to see Starry Night. There was a sign on the door that Starry Night was not on display, it was out for loan somewhere else (maybe the Van Gogh Museum?) and I didn't even bother going into the museum. I did go back another day and saw the painting, though. It's just so beautiful. I really should go to Amsterdam and the Van Gogh Museum.

Lieuwe Van Gogh, not only inherited the drive to be an artist but also Eastern spiritualism with tattoos of Pali language Buddhist blessings and a figure of Hanuman. I've seen Starry, Starry Night in The New York Met'. To be honest I was never much interested in Impressionism when studying art, but seeing the actual painting is a completely different experience than seeing prints or photographs of it. It can really only be described as powerful.

I’m from the Netherlands and I pronounce it like ‘Van Khokh’, as you transliterated that pronunciation. A lot less then as though I’m chocking, though. However, because Vincent was from Noord-Brabant - the central-south province of the Netherlands, sharing a border with Flanders, where the ‘g’ is pronounced ‘softly’ - he probably would’ve pronounced ‘Gogh’ way softer, not unlike the German ‘ch’.

It's not [vɛn xɔχ], but [vɑn xɔχ]! Which is how I pronounce it, the correct Dutch way.
    Again: [vɑn]! Not [vɛn]!

The van in Van Gogh is not pronounced like the vehicle, I can’t actually think of an english word with that “a” sound at all.

You do realize that both the fact that he cut off his own ear and that he committed suicide is now greatly debunked and both are believed to be false. Gauguin actually cut off his ear in a drunken fight, but he didn't want Gauguin's career destroyed over this, and wanted to go the sanitarium as he was practically destitute anyway. He was later accidentally shot by a neighborhood kid, René Secrétan, in a field, and not wanting to get the kid in trouble, he claimed to shot himself (which is why he did not die instantly.)
