David Hockney on Vincent van Gogh | FULL INTERVIEW

  • From 1 March 2019, the colossal works of David Hockney were on display in the Netherlands, at the Van Gogh Museum. For the first time, this spectacular exhibition offered an extensive and colourful exploration of the common ground between the work of Vincent van Gogh and David Hockney.
Hockney: ‘His paintings are full of movement. What people love about Van Gogh’s paintings is that all the brush marks are visible and you can see how they are painted. When you’re drawing one blade of grass you’re looking and then you see more. And then you see the other blades of grass and you’re always seeing more. Well, that’s exciting to me and it was exciting to Van Gogh. I mean, he saw very clearly’.
‘The world is colourful. It is beautiful, I think. Nature is great. Van Gogh worshipped nature. He might have been miserable, but that doesn’t show in his work. There are always things that will try to pull you down. But we should be joyful in looking at the world’. - David Hockney

Hockney is so unpretentious about his work at times, it's refreshing to see someone with his fame and talent just loving the aspect of still creating artwork at his age.

Agreed Jeremy. And when you get to be a certain age as an artist you recognize the victory that is simply keeping it going, working most days. Crucial that one remains open to discovery, not become a slave to technique, but equally crucial to develop a working method that is not so overladen with conceptual meaning that new ideas can't bubble their way up at any time, and that allows you to work every day of the week if you choose to. To me that's the example Hockney sets, and I so wish more young artists today would grasp that.

As an art history teacher, I so agree with you! I always tell my students that yes, biographical context is interesting and does matter, but that there are other things much more important to think about when looking at any of the great artists and furthermore, in van Gogh's case, his life is focused on so intensely that it's become the lazy man's approach to his work.

Never in the history of art have people (many on here praising this con artist) been fooled for so long and has added to the destruction of true artistic skills. Primarily having careers in Photography, Civil Engineering, Teaching and an IT Trainer three yeasr ago on retiring I put my educational hat on and set about to become an artist and now selling both oil and WC paintings after 'many' hours of practise and hard working. During that time I thought I would try a Degree in Art and went along for an interview taking my portfolio and before showing my work, asked to sit in a lesson being given to mainly young adults who were studying Hockney's recent tablet paintings. It was embarrasing because having actually sat in a primary class with 6 year olds observing that age group, the work being produce by the adult students was the same. I was then shown around and the senior Art Lecturer proudly showed me examples of student's work especially static display which she very proud off, basically piles of rubbish laid out, it was all I could do to stop my mouth being open all the time, suppressing many surpized looks of amazement and shaking my head with disbelief. At one point I thought at any moment some one like Jeremy Beadle would pop out and it had all been a set up. For the interview other members of the deparment joined us, being quite curious this old duffer wanting to join them and very much wanting to see my portfolia I tried to put off from showing. One of them them thinking I was ashamed and did not want to show my work, insisted they see them. I had about 50 watercolours, oils, pastels, line and wash of landscapes, portraitures, abstracts, female charcoal studies of my own creation and quite a few copies of Van Gogh, Cezanne, Monet and Turner. The room went silent as they passed them around and the senior tutor in quite an amaze manner asked, "You did all these in last three years, teaching your self", - "Yes I replied". Suffice to say I thanked them and not surprisingly did not hear from them again. I have no intention of writing this event to show off, just to show that on here TH-cam, in schools and Art Colleges thanks to con-artists of people like Hockney promoted Post-Modernism the true and real 'heart' of art is going. Removing the ability, skills, technique and practise to produce accurate representations of the world around us in its true form must always be the bedrock of a potential artist before they choose the medium they wish to concentrate on. Piling up old cardboard boxes, slapping on paint an dabbing it with various utensils and calling it "Crying Imagination"is not Art. Just teaching people to be emotive, feel the way of the medium and come out with the 'bollocks' Hockney sprouts and even dares to comment on Van Gogh whose skills to be able to control wet on wet oil until you try is nothing short of a miracle - is a travesty and an insult to all true artists. Hockney, art teachers and schools is the best example of the 'Emperor's New Clothes' ever.

Nature is full of colours, full of contrasts, of infinite beauties... to draw, to paint, to love, to learn to look better and perhaps understand some mysteries of existence. Thank you David!

David Hockney is a wonderful artist, he really appreciates the colors, the seasons, the space, the beauty of nature, just like Van Gogh. He said about Vincent, if he had painted for ten years more, he would have become rich. I do not believe so, because money and becoming rich was not in Van Gogh's nature. Vincent was always different and tremendously honest. When he worked at his brother's art gallery in London, selling pictures, and one client came to buy something, Vincent was so honest to tell always his opinion about the picture the client was interested. He did not sell any painting, and his brother had to fire him. Vincent van Gogh came to the world to paint, to create beauty, to make people happy, and not to become rich.

Brass-tacks, common sense is a rare thing in the art world - so many flannel merchants whose verbose wanderings stand in for the actual skill and talent that is absent in them. To hear Hockney speak about painting is so refreshing and informative. All of it from the point of someone who can do it.

Art is of course subjective . But although I’ve never been a huge David Hockney fan , I think he’s the most charming man I’ve seen interviewed on the subject of his own work , and of others .
He has retained a sense of humour many people lose though life . And a passion for painting which many people never find for any subject .
He would be great company at a dinner party , able to mix with all ages , with that twinkly eyed self depreciation.
I wish him many years of good health , so he can continue to create work ,& enjoy the nature he so loves .
