    Helpful video if you're considering a Niro and can't decide. My take, after nearly a year with a "regular" Niro hybrid, is that the EV is for urban drivers. Yes, you can take it cross-country, but not without the hassle of lengthy delays while it recharges. The "regular" hybrid needs only the usual 5 or 10-minute fuel stop and you're good for another 450 - 500 miles. I drive from Minnesota to the Rocky Mountains every summer, and driving the EV instead of the regular hybrid turns a 2-day trip (one way) into a 4-day trip (one way). And, in the U.S., once outside a major urban area, there's no infrastructure (i.e., charging stations) to support the EV. Maybe in 5 years, but not now. Meanwhile, my "regular" Niro has made me a hybrid convert!

      Interesting side note, one of our Niro EV customers just sent me a picture of his predicted range. In Canada the car is rated for 385 kms of range, yet his specific car was showing 491 on that particular morning. While I agree that the EV may not be the best choice for your particular trip, the EV is good for far more than just urban drivers. Of course, like you say, the Niro hybrid is a fantastic car, and I'm glad you're enjoying it. It's one of our favourites!

The one issue we had was a check engine light last year . Which was some kind of sensor The Niro always starts , and it's seen _38 c and +37 c . Not a murmur . It's a joy to drive and own .

    Now add the Plug-in Hybrid to this consideration as I just bought...game changer:)...I am at 600km, the gas when new off the lot showed 725km for the tank, currently at 625km available...with the Plug-in charge and my round trip less than 40km I am barely using gas...this will be an annual savings way better that just the Hybrid...it was a no brainer for us, highly suggest the Plug-in over the Hybrid. If you are metroite then pure electric...sorry I disagree as there is a huge cost savings vs. gas.

    A good, well-balanced video. It was a little unclear for non-EV drivers, but you charge overnight at your home. That's what he was talking about for the 4-9 hour charge. Waking up every morning with a "full tank" is amazing.
    Additionally, there is a lot less maintenance required with an EV. Dealerships won't emphasize this because they make money on servicing your vehicle. Those stops and oil changes on a gas-powered vehicle add up over time.
    That being said as an EV driver, I got a chance to drive a Niro Hybrid for a week. It's a very nice car! Efficiency was very good and it's a very practical vehicle.

    in my country, niro hibrid starts from 23370 Euro, while the e-Niro starts at 34704 (the 150 kw version)... all prices are with vat and with incentives from the government.
    This is a majour reason for choosing the hibrid version. Also, we don't have many charging stations, and if we live in blocks of flats, we can't charge at home... so, hibrid it is...
    Theese reasons also rule out the plug-in hybrid...
    But now comes the good part: the fuel economy of the hibrid is fantastic: between 1,8 l /100 km (the lowest i coud get), and 6,2 l / 100 km, the highest i could get... most of the time, during summer, i get 4,5 and in winter 5.
    For this reason, i consider the hibrid vehicles to be the best choice for owning a single car.

    • @BrantfordKia
      @BrantfordKia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it really depends on what you're looking for. I bought a 2020 Kia Soul EV and when we talk about practicality, it's pretty nice to never have to worry about an oil change. The other thing that has been really surprising me after a year of ownership is that I NEVER have range issues with my EV, and charging it is SO convenient, I glance at my phone, see the range of the car, walk over to my garage, plug the car in, and I'm done. I can do it during a commercial break on TV. But when my gas car needs fuel, it's always inconvenient. I need to get it on the way to work, or on the way home, and sometimes the weather isn't great. It's funny how your mindset shifts once you have an EV. And let me be clear, EV's aren't best for everyone, but for those people whom an EV makes sense for, they can very quickly become the most practical vehicle.

  • @Isaac-un4cn

    Price difference may be that large in Canada but if you are purchasing in the USA, depending on the state you live in, you will be paying (assuming MSRP w/ no discounts) about $39,680 for the Kia Niro EX EV vs $29,925 for the Kia Niro EX Hybrid (including the EX Advanced Technology package for an apples-to-apples comparison).
    To get the worst-case scenario I will assume the total cost ends up 10% above MSRP after taxes and fees. That gives:
    $43,650 for Kia Niro EX EV vs $32,920 for Kia Niro Hybrid.
    Then you can collect a $7500 tax credit + $2500 state rebate in most states the Niro EV is sold in. In California you can even get an $800 utility rebate.
    Net of taxes, fees, credits, and rebates, you will end up with the final sticker price of:
    $34,200 for EX EV (assuming your rebates are taxed at 40%), vs $32,920 for EX Hybrid. You will easily recoup the fuel costs over the course of owning the car.
    In short: if you are shopping at the EX level trim or above, you'll be better off with the EV version compared to the hybrid version.
    (side note: because of dealer discounts, I was able to get my Niro EX EV for only ~$31,000 net of all discounts and taxes.)

    I think the economic comparison is never clear cut. It all depends on the ground rules, which are different for everyone. Therefore everyone must do their own math. I.e. folks with the ability to charge most of their driving power at home will be at an advantage over those people who will always use public chargers, where prices can exceed those of the good old "dinosaur fuel". Imagine someone with a photo voltaic installation at home, will weigh the benefit of driving EV even more heavily towards that end. If the purchase decision should be purely based on the running cost, then one needs to consider which car may sell better in the future. Although is is up in the air, what will be the long term solution, one will probably agree it is not gonna be purely fossile fuel powered automobiles. No-one has a crystal ball what will happen to energy constraints in the future, but my gut feeling is the more EV content the better, even if the math is not clearly working out with today's ground rules.

    • @BrantfordKia
      @BrantfordKia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      EV's are no different than any other car when you consider why someone should purchase them. People buy cars for a variety of reasons and they have to weigh the pros and cons for themselves. The reality is, we have great EV's on the road today, and for a lot of people these EV's make sense. For many they won't make sense yet, and that's ok. Like you, I'm glad that we have the option.

    I dont know what its like in the USA but here in the UK there still arent enough public charging facilities to make the EV a serious option for someone like me who lives in London and regularly drives to Wales, Devon/Cornwall and Scotland for holidays/vacations. Thank for a seriously honest review on the merits or lack thereof of a Pure EV, at this point in time. I've personally reached the conclusion that the Plug-In Hybrid makes the most sense economically, especially now as it is my understanding that it qualifies for a $2,500 Federal Rebate in Canada bringing the price relatively close to the standard Niro Hybrid which does not qualify for any rebate. I like the fact that it's battery gives decent around town range for daily use BUT it is small enough that it can charge overnight, during cheap rates, on a simple 120 electrical outlet, so no need to pay additional cost for a 240 Volt charging outlet.
    Being a current owner of a Niro Hybrid Touring (the Plug-In Model was not available when we purchased), I can confirm that it is capable of some pretty spectacular fuel economy. Just last weekend, I traveled from London to St. Jacobs, driving efficiently but at just slightly above posted speeds and I achieved 3.8 litres per 100 kilometers. That's just shy of 75 Imperial mpg Imperial or 62 U.S. mpg. The cabin heater was NOT used on this trip, to keep the engine off as much as possible, but the Heated Seat and Steering Wheel was used extensively. The Touring Model is the least efficient but I do still have 16" winter tires on it rather than the 18" Touring wheels, so it is close to what a base model Niro provides. Since purchasing our Niro last July, we have traveled 13,929 kilometers and spent a total of $732.79
    on gasoline. I'm a little "anal retentive" and log all gas receipts into a spreadsheet so I know exactly what our Niro delivers. For the record, it is currently at 5.439 litres per 100 km and that includes city/highway/summer/winter driving with snow tires. Since spring finally arrived in Ontario, that number is now improving.

      @BrantfordKia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    First of all, I enjoy watching your videos, you speak well, clearly and you seem to be quite knowledgeable.
    It has been very difficult to get reviews for Canadian spec.cars. But, OMG !! My poor little head is spinning (LOL). Currently, I drive a 2012 Forte5 which has been a good car for me, but I've been keeping my eyes open for something a tad more bigger in the cargo area without having to go to an SUV. I still want the sportiness, but a little more room for extra cargo and of course epic fuel economy. I do live in the city of the 24/7 rush hour syndrome, but we are campers, boarders/skiers and like to go on long road trips. Ideally, I and many others would love to see more affordable, reliable sport wagons available here in Canada instead of more SUVs. (I see these types of vehicles are available almost everywhere else except here and the U.S. but don't see any coming here anytime soon).
    Because I was interested in the possibility of a hybrid (for the reduction of the carbon footprint and great fuel economy), I've looked at the 2019 NIRO hybrid ex-premium and have taken it out for a minor road test. Not bad. It might be do-able(??)
    Question(s): What are the pros and cons of the pure hybrid vs the plug-in hybrid pertaining to my lifestyle (??).
    I don't specifically need AWD/4X4 as most of my vehicles have been FWD and I can get around in the winter and up to the mountains with snowies on all 4 with no issues.
    I've seen many comments in regards to the NIRO not performing well in cold conditions (i.e. lack of power, doesn't want to start, etc.). Why is that (??). I've already witnessed the vehicle takes forever to warm up inside with the temp. between 0-6 C compared to other vehicles. (and that's, not a cold temp. by any means here in Canada's winters).
    Would the 2020 or 2021 (just being released in the U.S.) be any better (??)
    I would greatly appreciate any info and recommendations you have. Ty
    Cheers
    (Sorry for the small novel this turned into) lol

    • @BrantfordKia
      @BrantfordKia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll try to help a little bit... The concern that you mention about the Niro taking a long time to warm up isn't a concern I've heard before, and I wonder if that's just an issue with people understanding how the automatic climate control works. The car heats up just fine in my opinion. You also have the benefit of a heated steering wheel, and heated seats on all models, so that helps too. Lastly, the plug-in hybrid option gives you about 40+ kms of PURE electric range, meaning that you can do a lot of your regular everyday driving without running the gasoline engine, but you can drive across the country without having to plug in, and you'll still get hybrid fuel economy when doing so. The Plug-in hybrid does lose just a tiny bit of trunk space compared to the regular hybrid, so if absolute maximum cargo space matters, that's just something to consider. The only thing to keep in mind with the plug in hybrid is that it may not be able to run on purely electric on the coldest of winter days as it requires the gasoline engine to run to create heat, but for 3 seasons and maybe 3.5 seasons a year, you'll gain a benefit of pure electric range that should fulfill most of your everyday running around. I hope that helps a little bit!

      Thank you so much for your prompt reply. My Forte5 has all the same heating features except the heated steering ( which also takes a long time to warm up in the thin steering wheel of the Niro). So I still don"t get why the Niro regular hybrid takes a long time to warm up inside. Will this be more of a problem when I get up to way colder temps. (??) Especially if it has been sitting for the day in the cold weather(??). Are these hybrids meant more for running around in the city than actually going on road trips(??). Also, how do I fully recharge my battery(??). Not getting much info from anyone except to go up a hill & turn around & come down the same hill & either coast or ride the brakes for the entire hill. (Really) (??). Isn't that extreme wear & tear on the brakes(??) And who can coast entirely going downhill dealing with plenty of traffic (??)
      Ty once again

    • @BrantfordKia
      @BrantfordKia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@serenitynow8265 So I don't understand why your car takes some time to heat up. As far as recharging, the car is brilliant, it decides when and how to charge itself. The braking is a regenerative braking that recharges the car, so it doesn't always use your wheel brakes, in fact, we find that most hybrid drivers have brakes that last SIGNIFICANTLY longer than regular brakes. The car can also charge by coasting, and the engine running will also charge the car. Basically, you need to drive the car like a regular car, and you'll notice that you're saving a significant amount of fuel.

      Hi Peter, once again thank you for your prompt reply and for putting up with my simpleton sounding questions (lol). Also, thank you for explaining the braking info.
      Not entirely sure what happened, but I just replied to this a couple of minutes ago & it got deleted (a VERY NOT intended angry emoji showed up at the end of my reply & it got deleted) (??).
      Anyways, I'm not angry by any means, but I still don't get why I can't "FULLY" recharge my battery(??). I have approx. 650 km on the vehicle now ( city & hwy. combined) & only approx. 350 km remaining on the battery and continues to drop (it has never gone up). I drive in ECO mode most of the time except when I have to speed up to pass & go uphills.
      Again, are these vehicles meant more for city driving than going on road trips(??).
      Do you have any feedback from owners of this regular Niro who have driven in the winter at much higher altitudes(??). Please share all info if you do.
      I do have a friend who lives out in Ontario (I may be coming out that way as well) who is also interested in this vehicle as well, but I'm the one who is being the guinea pig for testing the vehicle out & giving him feedback for the time being.
      Cheers & Ty once again.

      @@serenitynow8265 I think the problem is, I'm just not fully understanding your questions. The battery never goes fully dead, and never fully charges, but on the regular Niro, your range is just your distance until you run out of fuel. So I think we're both misunderstanding the other. Sometimes these conversations are easier if they're had in person, perhaps your selling dealer can help?

    I enjoy your videos. I’m seriously considering purchasing a Kia Niro Hybrid. What is the range on the models of the regular Niro Hybrid?

    • @BrantfordKia
      @BrantfordKia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the range depends on your overall fuel efficiency. The car uses a gasoline engine and an electric motor in combination to achieve such great fuel mileage. The car will run on pure electric mode for short bursts, but it does not have a stated "range" in the same way that a PHEV or EV would have.

    • @derealbutch
      @derealbutch 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brantford Kia thanks a lot. I was wondering though if the average fuel consumption is 50 mpg for the Ex trim. How many miles/kilometers can it cover on a full tank?

    • @BrantfordKia
      @BrantfordKia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@derealbutch It has a 45 litre tank.... the best version gets 4.5 litres per 100 kms on the highway.... so... simple math says that would equal 1000 kms. I haven't seen someone do that yet, and that would run it bone dry... but that gives you an idea of the fuel efficiency that the Hybrid is theoretically capable of.

    You say you don't know which car is best.. but try and do math that wouldn't be "best" for so many people. "It doesn't matter how I got there with the math"... Ummm no that's EXACTLY what matters. What area / state / country are you in? Is there a state credit? What is gas prices in that state? How much does electric power cost? Is there different rates for electric in your area? Can you use carpool lanes? Electric would be better for so many people.

    • @BrantfordKia
      @BrantfordKia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree that electric is better for a lot of people. In many cases an Electric Car is better overall, but that being said, we do run in to a lot of people who have a set budget for the purchase price of their next car, and the hybrid model is a better car for them. Also, we're in Ontario, Canada. Provincial rebates vary per province, and are often changing. We're about to have a federal election and this video will stay up well after that. It's tough for me to quote electricity rates for an entire country, (and the U.S. and beyond, which is where our audience is from) as well as quoting rebates that may not be around by the time someone watches this video. I'd be happy to discuss with individuals which vehicle is best for them, but the reality is that an Electric car isn't right for everyone yet.

    How often do you have to replace the battery in a hybrid

    • @BrantfordKia
      @BrantfordKia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The battery is designed to last the life of the car. It's funny, we never have people shopping for gasoline vehicles asking how long the transmission will last, but we regularly get hybrid or EV buyers asking about the need to replace batteries. Both a transmission and a battery will deteriorate with age, but both are designed to last for a very long time, and traditionally, you wouldn't have to replace either over the life of the car.
