'a slight detour through a fish' love it. 🙂
so interesting - what was a message of judgement was really a message of life and salvation.
    thanks for this!

Great answer. I would also add that Matthew‬ ‭12‬:‭41‬ says that Jonah “preached” to the Ninevites, which implies he probably said a lot more than the short abbreviated sentence we actually have recorded for us in Jonah

That's a great point! I'm sure Jonah included many other details in his full message. Thanks for commenting!

and if you watch it you can spot it

"Yet forty days and Nineveh shall be overthrown." Which is to say, at the end of forty days, which time was granted for their repentance. That this is the language of PROPHETIC WARNING is implied; and should be understood with the following proviso: except Nineveh repented, the city would be destroyed, for otherwise why is any time (40 days) fixed to Jonah's utterance? (And not rather that God should destroy them immediately as with Sodom, in a day and that without warning)
And this is further implied in that God took pains to send Jonah to them. If this was not PROPHETIC WARNING, why should God even bother to send a prophet to them?

Question: how many of you are honestly willing to rigorously test each and every New Testament book (one by one) by the Deuteronomy 18 test?
I'm in the long process of doing this and have tested Matthew's Jesus, and he passes the tests (but don't take my word for it), and so will quote these words from Jesus in Matthew 7
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Ezekiel 22 (which passes the tests, but don't take my word for it) uses that same term, 'ravening wolves'
There is a conspiracy of her prophets in the midst thereof, like a roaring lion ravening the prey; they have devoured souls; they have taken the treasure and precious things; they have made her many widows in the midst thereof. Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them. Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain. And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, "Thus saith the Lord GOD," when the LORD hath not spoken.
Just because someone hands you a beautifully bound leather book of many books and says every word in it is the word of God, doesn't mean you shouldn't test it. Jesus warned of tares sown among the wheat. I believe you should also test the apocryphal books which the Protestant church took out of its bibles three hundred years ago: to make sure your church leaders, when they sought to rid God's garden of tares, didn't root up good wheat with them - just as Jesus warned would happen (Mat13:29)
Sir, didn't not thou sow good seed in thy field? From whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this.
    Mat13
Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod.
    ~
    There are several tests:
    Deu13:1-5
    Deu18:19-21
    Deu19:15
    and more
    The way is narrow.
And, by the way, if any mine should say, "but you're quoting Deuteronomy (the book which contains the primary tests), how do you know THAT is scripture?" Look into the nature of the tests and I think you'll have your answer.
If we're going to follow Jesus, it's time we start taking his words seriously and testing all those who claim to speak in the name of the Lord. You will not dishonor God by doing this. You will HONOR him: he told YOU to test everything and everybody who claims to speak in his name.

"but if they repent" it didn't say repent it said turn from evil. Repent does not inherently mean "turn from evil" but you "change the mind" (or "change your mind")

"Change your mind from unbelief to belief and in doing so actively believe the gospel"
      VS
"Turn from your sins (some might go as far as to say, entirely) and THEN believe the gospel."
That's not faith, that's works of the law plus faith. And you're saved by Grace through faith not of works. And Grace is Grace and isn't works or else it's not Grace, and work is works and it's not Grace, otherwise it's not work.

@@XYGamingRemedyGIn Mat12:41 Jesus says, The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented (μετανοέω) at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
Jesus says Nineveh repented. The fruit of their repentance was evidenced in their turning from their evil ways.
This is why we hear John saying, "bring forth fruits meet for (or befitting) repentance."
Beside all this, one of the evils God is concerned with IS the condition of our heart & mind toward God. In truth, the condition of the heart & mind is the foundational issue. Repentance (a changing of the mind) is itself the eradication of this evil disposition against God.
Jesus makes this clear in Mat12 & Mrk7,
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. > < For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: all these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
A change of heart, according to the Saviour, will bring about a change of action.
And therefore 'metanoia' is often given in scripture as a synecdoche: ie a part which is given for (and expresses) the whole.
