Man... the knowledge and the precision of this kid is unreal. He is unbelievably valuable for the team. I love how he works and explains every single detail.
He’s gotten so much better, he has always been knowledgeable but at the beginning was kinda awkward in front of the camera. But he’s come into his own. Always enjoy watching the builds!
Man. I love watching Quinn “the mad scientist” work on the throtl builds. This man is a freaking genius and I’m so glad the throtl brought Quinn to the team. Never get tired of seeing this man work on cars with that level of detail and dedication. Keep up the good work.
It is such a calming experience watching and hearing Quinn build an engine! I'm totally Zen after watching this! And the technical expertise he brings to the table and explains is awesome, he has become such a great part of the team!
Quinn, you are amazing. The way you work, too how you explain things is awesome. I’m not mechanically inclined, but when you explain whatever it is, it’s understandable. Keep up the amazing work. Throtl, big ups for bringing this young man in!
Holy shit! I have been trying to learn how to read cam specs FOR EVER, and every mechanic guru and professional ever gets too technical about it and it becomes completely incomprehensive so I just gave up, my man Quinn here just casually explained it in a couple minutes and now it all makes sense. I love it!
This episode is GOLD! Nah scratch that it DIAMOND! The explanation and the amount of knowledge he has is amazing. I FULLY ENJOYED THIS EPISODE! Well Done Bro 👏🏾
Long time engine builder here. Excellent job at a young age. On these high end engine builds about the only pro tips I can offer is to use dlc coating on stuff like the cam lobes. On the small-end bushings we use Beryllium copper (because of its high-rpm reliability), while the surfaces of the big-ends are again treated with DLC. On the piston skirts we use Ober coating (Teflon and Molybdenum base) and nickel-phosphorous plating for the piston-pin clip-groove. Something else I would advise is to get a torque wrench calibrator and calibrate your torque wrenches before any job. We also cryo treat some components, including the turbo charger. Finally we also weigh the pistons and con rods try to make sure all the pistons weigh the same and con rods weigh the same etc and it makes a difference for a smoother engine. Oh 1 last thing, they make oil squirters with ball check valves that close off at low rpm. The reason for that is to avoid oil pressure loss at low rpm or when the engine is idling. Nonetheless you did an excellent job and are way ahead of me when I was your age. By the way I learned most of these things building race motorcycle engines as well as some other tricks of the trade while working for Honda
I'm studying mechanical engineering and I specifically looked for a real time 2jz build to make sure I don't have any gaps in my knowledge and this was perfect. This was exactly what I searched for. And honestly: if you kinda know what's up it's not that hard anymore especially if it's on a standalone ECU and you don't have to swap stuff around and figure out solutions to problems that don't exist with a standalone. It's the next level after building a pc, because like this you don't just combine the components but you also assemble the components themselves here.
the reason why i stayed till the end of your vids because you the only mechanic that not yelling in the same time while explaining. not like others vids. love your work,
There is nothing better than watching, listening to quin building a engine and explaining how everything single detail is working and why it's working like that. Engine builds with quin are the best in this channel. To know that much at such a young age is realy impressive and incredible! You go quin master of engine builds!!
I’m 65! When I was a young man back in the 70’s & building engines the Cam Shaft was known as the “Hot Rod” in my day you either built the cams up by wielding on plugs & grinding them down or you took a grinder to a cam to grind it down depending on how & what you wanted it to perform & I can only emulate the comments this kid is worth his weight in gold
I know nothing about cars. Yet I've been watching and subbed to this channel for a little over 2 years and man I just love your content. Awesome builds as always!
I just wanna say how informative this video is. Quinn shows everything. I’m in the middle of rebuilding my engine and he has shown all little tips and tricks. Testing the thrust on the crank was even shown for a second. Him oiling the pistons and everything. Thank you guys!
Excellent job Quinn, by the book, this video should serve as a guide to any piston engine build, was not expecting any less out of this shop, this is the only way to do it right.
Wow. Awesome build! And, just so you guys know, what you've done here doesn't just apply to this engine -- the process and procedures, generally-speaking, apply to all engines that get rebuilt. So whether you know it or not, you're actually teaching people how to rebuild an engine, which is very, very cool. And lastly, I gotta say, Quinn knows his stuff. Very smart dude; guys like him are very hard to find.
I love how detailed you guys are when you do your videos. You tell us everything you use and why, not just throw an engine together and leave us confused as to what just happened. Thanks throtl.
I’m one of those guys that is into cars in a big way but don’t have the time or space to do this which is annoying but I love watching you guys keep it up thanks for the content 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I rarely comment on videos but I gotta say I love seeing you guys doing some seriously tuned builds. Those engine builds are great, keep it up! Would love to see you building an oldschool BMW M/S50 engine with forged internals and big power.
First time I’ve seen this channel. You look really young but, damn, do you know your shit 😳 It warms my heart to see dudes like you with this kind of knowledge.
Are we sure Quinn's name really isn't Einstein? OMG this guy knows his SHIZZLE!! 👍 Love watching the process of these engine builds. Hope to see more in the future. Just so much more to an engine than people realize. Amazing work guys!!
Love these types of videos, Quinn's knowledge always impresses me. Would like to see more color on the engine though. Maybe powder coat the hot side of the turbo?
Its fun to see someone so young that can build a motor. What i noticed was he never used a powered drill to install any of the bolts. All hand done, and torqued. This engine will be great with it all hand done.
This guy is unbelievably skilled. Amazing hands, and incredible work. So nice to see that with so many EVs on the road, skills like this aren't dying out, and the next generation of enthusiasts are still out there.
So many EVs on the road? LMAO. There are a dozen "off-road" internal combustion engines in the world for every "on-road" engine. And anybody that can read and follow instructions with "imagery" can duplicate his "skills".
Quinn out here doing the Lords Work. This was an awesome, in-depth build explanation from a true wizard. Not many people can explain the components so thoroughly and comfortably while building it. Well done.
having a mechanical background, i love watching this kind of stuffs! Lol one small critique, you dealing with 1 and 5 tenths not 15 thou! .015 of a clearance is pretty insanely big and most likely not to manufacture spec lol
As an aerospace design engineer I had to pause the video to confirm as well. Searched through the comments to see if anyone else noticed and finally found yours bro. Yeah, I use slip fit tolerances for pins and bushings around .0005” to .001”, so when he said .009” to .015” I was like DAMN, that’s massive!!! Nonetheless though, one of Quinn’s best videos by far. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Quinn in this video taught me so much about engines and how things work! i'm a car guy but i'm only 17 so just learning about the mechanical side of it and i'm loving it! thank you for explaining everything so well
Man what an epic engine build and having a clear explanation into everything you put on the engine you are definitely a wizard with the skills that you possess I can't wait to see you fit this to the Supra and hear it fire 🔥 up totally awesome Quinn you guys rock 👌👌
Explaining the piston ring gap and gap location and then the valve spec explanation was awesome! Thanks for sharing the project and teaching us along the way.
It depends on the brands you buy the parts from really, some parts might be equal to another brand but the other brand is famous and so you're paying for the name as well. Just like with clothes and shoes or Phones.
This video is so educational to me, before I had watched this video I did not know much about how an engine actually functions, I just had a light understanding, but getting to see the full assembly has really taught me the inner workings of this specific engine and how everything is so meticulously engineered, it's honeslty an artform. No wonder car museums are so popular!
ive watch this video a few times now, the first time i watched it i knew pretty much nothing about cars, or engines, but im happy to say that now i actually understand a lot of this stuff
I didn't think I was going to understand how Cam's are measured when he started explaining, but oh my god that mad perfect sense. Quinn is the best, hands down.
Quinn! I'd say the most informative engine build I've watched. You're passion shines through with your fastidious attention to detail. Your m.o is clearly 'do the job right the first time'! Keep pumping these out. I'd love to see a 10 and 12 rebuild, and maybe something ludicrous like a W16 Bugatti engine rebuild/mod turned into a sema build!
Quinn you knocked out of the park again!!! that engine is going to be savage!! the valve cover looks dope esp with all the blue accents on the engine and really awesome engineering as far as helping to stop with the blow by!
U can tell engine building is Quinn’s wheelhouse, they way he explains every detail is awesome, I learn more and more with every video keep it up fellas
3 observations from me that maybe you guys want to explain about/take into consideration. 1. BC276 without shimless buckets? 2. Why didnt you use a billet timing belt tensioner? The cast oem one is a very well know point of failure when going for big power and trust me, you dont want that thing to break while using high cam profiles. 3. Why didnt you go for billet main caps? (Although this i could probably understand, as is well known that 2j oem main caps can handle up to 1000/1100 and you are not going for more than that, but seeing how good everything else you put into this motor is, i think you could have gone with them just as a reliability upgrade. Keep up the good work, outstanding production quality and very meticulous engine building work!
I was thinking the same thing. I came back here to see if they responded to my comment on this. I'm making a video response to them addressing this. hopefully they watch

In regard to using plasiguage, the "15" is ten thousandths, not thousands. Typical main clearance (varies by application is 0.002" (two thousandths).
Explaining the piston ring gap and gap location and then the valve spec explanation was awesome! Thanks for sharing the project and teaching us along the way.
How much does does it cost to build this engine approximately, i wonder?
