When you mentioned the Portland shooting I remembered a friend mentioning they were there for the protest. They knew the woman who died, and talked about another person who was completely paralyzed after getting shot. The fact that the guy who could’ve ended up killing my friend was in the same fandom as me scares me.
EDIT: This didn’t age well I had a feeling this con was going to be an underwhelming attempt at a flex, with them acting as “the mature ones” with “no incidents, unlike those other cons”. Sadly, I see their efforts of establishing a small con being somewhat successful in the long run. There are a lot of furs that closet their beliefs that are seen as “against the hivemind”, and there are even some ex-furries that may see this con and consider it. This group has been here and will always be here. My advice is for people to cover it with videos like this, but otherwise, ignore it. Getting upset over gatherings like this is a win to them.

No matter how many furries I asked on the origins of the fandom, there was no consensus answer for this question. The answers can vary from "the fandom was founded as a branch of sci-fi in 60s" to full-schizo "well, actually, Egyptians/Sumerians/Greeks/People of Upper Paleolith (underline whatever applicable) were the original furries" (hi, Ash Coyote!).

I'm so lucky I'm not 6 years younger, because 18-year-old me was conservative, grew up with that sort of family/social circle. Back in 2016, there was far less of a prominent alt fur presence and acceptance for it. I found new perspectives through new friends, and challenged beliefs I just accepted cause my parents told them to me. If I had found alt furs and been taken in by them, I wouldn't have had to think about contradictions in my old beliefs and I could have been stuck regurgitating them for who knows how long. I'm scared for modern younger furries growing up and seeing the surge of right-wing groups within niche communities. It's going to make people from conservative backgrounds more likely to stay ignorant of issues faced by members with targeted identities.

Still despise the fact that I was right behind Jason and Kabs in the fursuit parade and next to them in the photo... I had a great time spending most of the con in the game room getting to know a bunch of different people, but since I learned shortly afterwards who those two were I've always felt sick thinking about it. Plus I was proposed to by MegeGabe at that con and that turned out to be the most toxic relationship I have ever been in. But other than that, the con itself was enjoyable, though I decided pretty early on that I would not be attending this year or possibly ever again. In public a lot of furries have made weird displays of themselves, and it can be said oh that's norm convention behavior. Let's just look at Comicon, or an Anime Convention. They have rules and regulations and breaking them can lead to a perm ban from their cons. 10% of the negativity that goes on in furry conventions wouldn't fly at all at comic con, or E3. The one time a toxic furry member behaves at a con, expects a noble peace prize, only to be used as a final component that would complete their furry degenerate death ray. If you are a person with positive morals and you stick to those morals 24/7 then cool. But if you have a negative history within the fandom and you continue to spew drama or make threats, or perform explicit public things infront of random members or have some sort of physical symbol that will clearly get you kicked out of a con, circle, group, fandom, then I'd say you've made your bed and you should lay in it. Jus because you the toxic furry at a con did one good thing or was being a good doggo expecting praise at a con. Won't excuse your bad history that of which made you toxic in the first place. Forgiveness is a thing but so is "Guilty by association" and the negative history a furry member has in the past won't be forgiven so easily much less welcome by the bigger circle within the fandom.

Canceling isnt a thing imo. I see a lot of people talking about inclusiveness in the fandom, and why shouldn't these people be included. And I have to say, the moment you include a group of people that frequently antagonizes other groups just for them existing, you stop being inclusive. If you can't accept others for who they are or their beliefs, don't go crying about people not accepting you. Although personally, I would not accept groups that spread misinformation either, since they indirectly cause a lot of harm. There's definitely some nuance to being "inclusive", but the TL;DR for me would be "just don't be a jerk to people".

No matter how many furries I asked on the origins of the fandom, there was no consensus answer for this question. The answers can vary from "the fandom was founded as a branch of sci-fi in 60s" to full-schizo "well, actually, Egyptians/Sumerians/Greeks/People of Upper Paleolith (underline whatever applicable) were the original furries" (hi, Ash Coyote!).

I'm so lucky I'm not 6 years younger, because 18-year-old me was conservative, grew up with that sort of family/social circle. Back in 2016, there was far less of a prominent alt fur presence and acceptance for it. I found new perspectives through new friends, and challenged beliefs I just accepted cause my parents told them to me.
If I had found alt furs and been taken in by them, I wouldn't have had to think about contradictions in my old beliefs and I could have been stuck regurgitating them for who knows how long.
I'm scared for modern younger furries growing up and seeing the surge of right-wing groups within niche communities. It's going to make people from conservative backgrounds more likely to stay ignorant of issues faced by members with targeted identities.

I had a great time spending most of the con in the game room getting to know a bunch of different people, but since I learned shortly afterwards who those two were I've always felt sick thinking about it.
Plus I was proposed to by MegeGabe at that con and that turned out to be the most toxic relationship I have ever been in. But other than that, the con itself was enjoyable, though I decided pretty early on that I would not be attending this year or possibly ever again.

If you are a person with positive morals and you stick to those morals 24/7 then cool. But if you have a negative history within the fandom and you continue to spew drama or make threats, or perform explicit public things infront of random members or have some sort of physical symbol that will clearly get you kicked out of a con, circle, group, fandom, then I'd say you've made your bed and you should lay in it.
Jus because you the toxic furry at a con did one good thing or was being a good doggo expecting praise at a con. Won't excuse your bad history that of which made you toxic in the first place. Forgiveness is a thing but so is "Guilty by association" and the negative history a furry member has in the past won't be forgiven so easily much less welcome by the bigger circle within the fandom.

I somehow missed hearing about this fur con and all the gimmick cancel culture marketing. As you said, it turned out to just be a dumpster. While I don't agree with cancel culture because of how it has spread to try and cancel important history (not saying its good history, but most history is very important if only to teach people not to do something stupid again) and abused to cancel actually good people for standing up for themselves... I do think cancel culture can be bad, especially in cases where someone is ruined by the court of public opinion going on "guilty until proven innocent" (i.e serious allegations that later turn out to be entirely false) but in basically all other cases it's generally a good thing. @@MrJack1992 overwhelmingly, they go against the broadly held opinions of society. On gay marriage, trans rights, abortion, etc, the country on the whole is in favor of those things but right wingers make a point of being against them. I would consider scorn in that area well deserved.

A baker has the right to refuse service for any reason. I mean you forget there's over 300,000,000 million people and we're a multi ethnic but mono linguistic society comparable to Russia. Much more of America and Europe is overwhelmingly more conservative then people realize. I would argue people like yourself out yourselves in echo chambers and surround yourselves with toxic people far worse then some of the most racist White nationalists I've spoken to. Like at the end of the day if I dislike a pride flag at a business I'll do the sensible thing. I can vote with my wallet. I don't think however that I should call a harassment campaign against the Owners because they're Libtards/wokeists and try to ruin their lives.

If you start off with life ruination don't be surprised when the right in anger votes trump with a supermajority in 2024 and remembers how they were treated the last 8 years. You're not a bad person but if you're side starts trying to ruin others lives because you think they're "fascist/right wing/Nazis/etc..." be careful. You might find yourself soon in the minority and facing an angry and resentful majority. when that happens it will be ugly.
A close friend of mine went an he said it was fun but the main problem was it was boring, to quote hin "It pissed off all the right people on twitter but had nothing else going for it. It was worth the trip but I wish there would have been more to do aside from take pictures and pet the animals."
