    I tweeted this a couple of days ago and it's pretty fitting for this: "We're more concerned with cancel culture than rape culture."
    The reason people go out canceling each other is because they understand the systems in place will not hold terrible people accountable, so they feel like they need to put justice into their own hands; unfortunately, it's way easier to go after people in your own communities than people with wider popularity and notoriety.
    A lot of heinous people get away with sexual abuse (or condoning sexual abuse) while having their platforms intact, because they know how to appeal to our own fears of being dogpiled for something seemingly innocuous we have done or could do. So while we're going after each other for being too sensitive or not caring enough about victims, there are still predators out there largely unscathed. The conversation has changed from "Let's get rid of these assholes," to "Let's concentrate on these assholes who are way too concerned with getting rid of assholes."
    And this is why Will Smith got banned from the Academy for ten years in the same week that Louis CK won a Grammy for Best Comedy Album.

    • @ralphbrennan7700
      @ralphbrennan7700 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Not to mention that Will Smith and Louis CK and their careers cultivate different audiences. Louis CK can get away with the abuse he does because he normalizes it to an extent in his "shock humor" and he plays off the culture that it creates. Will Smith is an a list actor and he's far more presentable (and marketable) than CK is, so.

      Because if you live in a western liberal democracy, you don't live in a rape culture. South Africa is a rape culture. The Middle East is a rape culture. If rape isn't socially acceptable in your culture, it's not a rape culture. If you live in Canada, US, UK, Australia, etc. then rape is definitely not socially acceptable. In fact, the very accusation can destroy your life even if there's no evidence. That's not rape culture.

    The dreadlock thing is really goofy to me because dreads are not exclusive to one culture. They were historically also worn by the Celtics, Vikings, various Germanic Tribes even Romans. Various groups through ancient Europe and the Middle East, not just Africa. No one group get's to claim ownership of the hairstyle. It's widespread throughout history, through most of the world, in fact.

    • @lazlazuli7934
      @lazlazuli7934 2 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      The origins of dread locks from the earliest known use if I recall was from the folks that settled to make Greece before it became Greece. When I had made my sona whom has dreadlocks I was overly concerned about getting hate from it because I'm not black but through research I know it's not the case. What bothers me most is the fact a lot of hairstyle can be traced back to different cultures and everyone wants to pull the race card for it.

    • @gryaznygreeb
      @gryaznygreeb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      @@lazlazuli7934 Even if it is a hairstyle from another culture there isn't anything wrong with having it yourself. Many African women have naturally very short curly hair, and they get hair extensions and weaves to have hairstyle that you could technically say are European or Asian and not African, especially when African hair can't naturally be styled that way. But no one cares about that and we shouldn't care about that. It's just people expressing themself the ways they personally find appealing. Cultural appropriation is more like when you use someone else's culture harmfully or claim it as your own

    This reminds me of back in 2021 when a server made a beware on me for referencing widely-used emotes and memes, y'know, things other artists do, and because I traced one of the first commissions I ever did 2 YEARS AGO that I've been vocal about and owned up to. They went out of their way to make a channel dedicated to me and pinged the whole server for it, 6k people. When people got upset at the blatant targeted harassment and made-up accusations, they started banning people and accusing me of raiding. They were forced to delete the beware in under 24 hours and issued me a half-assed apology. The owner told me "we just wanted you to see how fast your career could end." I still do art full-time to this day, and people have stopped trying to push bewares out on me because they realized at that point that it was a hate campaign and that there was no solid proof that I was even doing anything wrong.

      Things like this are why I haven't bothered much with the community at large in the last half decade. I've been around since the 90s and went to the biggest conventions pretty regularly on the east coast for like a decade.. then I started seeing how brigading and cancelling is such a thing within the community and it's just flat not worth it for me.
      People used to ask in the early 2000s 'Why are there so few greymuzzles running around?'. Two reasons. First and foremost, the average age of a fur is probably somewhere around 15-25. It's a young kids' game, and I'm gonna be honest, between the obvious issues of lack of similar interests/viewpoints when you're 16 vs when you're 38, the fact that you can quite EASILY be looked at kind of cringey for being 30s/40s spending all your spare time hanging around teenagers, and other similar issues... Yeah. Second, because drama. DRAMA. The community et al is FILLED with it.
      Great example? 2 Gryphon and the attendant drama around his ousting at Anthrocon. While I don't agree with a LOT of shit he's personally done... he was ABSOLUTELY brigaded out of his gig at Anthrocon. I say that because I literally was familiar with the group who essentially forced him out. A lot of what pushed it was because of a group of angry little screechers from the delaware/NJ area that pretty consistently used those kind of brigading/cancel tactics, and pushed the issue through the board, complaining about how bad he hurt their delicate sensibilities and 'wasn't representative of the fandom' because they didn't like him. And that's only ONE story of MANY, MANY stories over a decade and a half or more.
      Whatever you feel about that debacle, NOBODY can deny it was a giant drama fest, and I don't think people as a group forcing someone out that way is the right way to handle it. That's kind of what we have both a legal system and convention staff and security for.
      Another incident where I've had someone who happened to be (or at least TOLD me they were) trans, telling me that the LGBT movement created and owned the furry fandom and if I didn't like things about it, I should just get out of it. Nevermind that he didn't know ANY history about where it came from, or that I'd been there literally a decade longer... I should just get out of it if I didn't like aspects of it because it's now owned by that group. Okay. Really inclusive, let me tell you. Which is sad when we came from a place of including people who didn't fit in elsewhere.
      Again, this is why, while I still have my avatars and artwork and stuff, I really don't dabble in the community anymore. It's a pretty dismal place far too often, and has WAY too much twitter/tiktok drama for my liking these days.

    Callout culture and deplatforming, in complete contrast, is pretty much a universal issue on the emo dog / furry adopt communities.
    Nearly all of the community has eaten itself alive at this point. A few valid cases with stuff like commission theft, animal care negligence or zoophilia art have gotten rid of a few bad influences, but among the most recent callout storms, most are just nothing. Scurry, a newer but decently popular artist was shoved off the community for sending links to shitpost Genshin NSFW to a group of 17-year-olds, while he was the same age. No callout was made towards him, but he shared the info knowingly wanting to show he'd changed, but was met with dogpiling. Another, formally Wulfui, was called out for not removing a groomer from her server despite dealing with real-life health issues and not being too hands-on with moderation in the first place. These were several-thousand follower accounts over multiple platforms too.
    A lot of these callouts also load the main claim with tons of unrelated claims of bad character, or minor offenses.
    A lot of the community has at this point moved onto the main furry fandom, the furry rave scene, NSFW furry groups, Manga styles or what I could only describe as yass girl furries. Its been super disappointing to see, seeing all the talent and unique artstyles pulled away so quickly by emotional immaturity and many of the people that leave don't end up really adapting their new communities' styles, just being there for the sake of escaping toxicity.
    As someone who used to be a lot more active in mainstream furry circles, its super eye-opening to see most furry "cancellations" coming by irrefutable instances of irresponsible messaging, manipulation and repeated harm.

(ie, making a "gypsy" themed character based on the Roma, to which gypsy is a slur and they are treated like second class citizens to this very day). But the hair thing I've not seen truly verified, since locs and what society generally thinks dreadlocks are are not the same. Oh boy. Recently a guy who ran and organized a regional furry chat/meetup group in my part of the US actually ended up deplatforming himself as far as I know. He was an admin of the chat until the entire thing (a SFW general furry chat) got put on a beware list because he was in charge of it. It turns out, he shouldn't have been in charge of anything, because he commissioned some EXTREMELY morbidly sus things.
    He left the chat to new admin after it got put on the list, and the new admin were naturally tasked with explaining to everyone why the chat had a completely new name and why their main coordinator/admin was nowhere to be found.
    Basically, after finding out about what happened, his own fellow admin and chat ostracized him. He didn't fight it because there was really no case for him.

    It reminds me of a group of furries that ran a chat group that ended up getting domineered by one person who would throw tantrums if you posted the same stickers as them and would freak out over pictures of anime characters and “shortstacks” (pulling a Twitter and calling every anime character as shortstack they saw as underaged lolis) and overall being a censorious degenerate.
    The irony of the last part was that they also posted cub and toddlercon, and if you called out their hypocrisy would throw a tantrum and make everyone's life a living hell.
    That person led people to either leave the group, make one final “fuck you guys” move and go out in style, or fall in line and please the Queen bee and stroke their ego to avoid their ire.
    It just goes to show that depending on the circumstance, cancelation and deplatforming can just as well be used by malicious actors who want to remove people they don’t like as much as they can be used on people who commit actual crimes and should be removed.
    Which is kind of funny in a community that could be seen as “degenerate”, “animal f**kers”, or anything else your average everyday person thinks a furry is.

There's a screenshot of her sending feral NSFW to a then 15 year old minor the same day as her releasing the music album "Little Spoon", allegations of her being a sexual abuser, and a video she has made discussing the ethics of feral NSFW that feels like *_borderline_* zoophilia.
    I still hold a grudge, i know there's nothing left that could be considered incriminating, due to her taking full accountability and owning up to her mistakes by apologising on Tumblr, but i just feel like this is the start of something bad. She's using Autistic Spectrum Disorder to excuse very morally questionable things and people really do seem to agree with her. As someone on the spectrum i get really bad vibes from her, especially considering how i was a fan of her work since Christmas of 2022, around the time that she had released "Agnes & Hilda"
    I don't want anyone to go after Patricia, i only suggest watching very closely what sorts of moves forward Patricia makes nowadays, as things seem to be getting very interesting.

      Imo, no. Its humans that give animals of a specific region some sort of cultural significance. People see an animal that is specific to their regions and tie it into their culture. But, the animal came before the people and will be there if we all disappear from the planet.
      However dreadlocks do have cultural significance and come from a human tradition, no? As someone outside the culture looking in, I can understand how it feels like appropriation. Furries are uhhhh not socially graceful creatures that cheapen, infantilize, or just flat out disrespect a culture by making a parody of it for the sake of their selfish aesthetic. Idk anyone else have an opinion?

I also, however, can't blame the person for not knowing, because at the end of the day *it's hair*, who expects a hairstyle to have cultural significance?

    oh god, I was one of the people who was trying to defend her for putting dreadlocks on the fursuit.
    But I've had to deal with 'cancel culture/callout' shit for so long. Though the first time was well before it became a culture. The short of it, I used to be a somewhat well known artist. A super popufur commissioner commissioned me. I did the drawing, he said he couldn't pay me because his bank account was hacked. I gave him the picture and another sketch and told him that I hope he got his bank account situation solved. Trying to be nice, right?
    Wrong, dude instead for some reason made FA journals on me saying that I made him feel so bad harassing him and demanding he pay me. I woke up to no exaggeration over a thousand IM's of people telling me to kill myself for being a horrible person and the like. What was really fucked up is that this person made fake logs to make it look like I was harassing him, but people should have known better because my English is near competent, and his wasn't. In these fake logs it had a lot of Engrish and all sorts of typos. But people believed I was actually saying those logs.
    So when I posted the actual logs of that night in my defense, dragoneer deleted the journal and temporarily suspended me. When I questioned why he was allowed to keep that fake log up and I was suspended he said "it's like you said. Those were fake. We only have a policy about posting REAL logs".
    I lost a ton of watchers after that and for years after had people bringing it up as if I actually harassed this guy and to this day I still have no idea why he did it.
    After that, I have had a few incidents of attempted cancelling.
    1) I have a tribal wolf character, and since I'm not native american was being accused of cultural appropriation. The wolf character was tribal designed, but not native american inspired; it was NORDIC tribal inspired.
    2) I said I have no idea what the 14 words are. Some guy took that upon himself to tell people on twitter that I was a nazi sympathizer... because I didn't know what they were? I know what they are now, but at the time I didn't so when I was asked if I supported them, the fact I didn't say no meant I must be a nazi!
    3) this one's very recent because of free fur all. I said to some furs who were trying to find anyone who went there that they needed their information because they are nazis. I asked how did they know. "Anyone who went there could only be nazis" why? I don't support that unless you can prove they were nazis. The event wasn't advertised as being a nazifur con, so there's a chance that some people went without knowing people who had alt-fur ties were going, therefore trying to dox any and everyone there is ETHICALLY wrong. But nope. now I have a few people trying to add me to a nazi list again.

    no i dont have a twitter for the exact reason of avoiding meaningless arguments with people who i might like one second than get needlessly angry the next, only due to an opinion every man is entitled too and experience an over reactionary meltdown

    The hypnotist Sappho part was a strange one. That "coming out" video she did was just so ill-advised and the video she did after that was was even moreso, being way too proud of being called a dog f---er. Then slowly losing her resolve after people abandoned her left and right for the stuff she did and continued to do afterward. Her appearance on that podcast mentioned did not do her any favors (calling it cringe-inducing doesn't nearly describe it enough). She brought it all on herself.
