These are the same men who complain about women and their rights and make it about them and they also complain about Taylor Swift cause she stands for the women having their own careers without men and they hate that. I am so sick of the misogyny and sexism in 2024
I remember some guy say college a scam and all I can think how dumb it’s is by that logic high school a scam no one point in my life I use trigonometry ever but that may not be true to the guy who lay down pipes I can’t imagine how can someone think college a scam because they didn’t use something they learn there but the real scam is paying for college
Men get academic titles for the same nonsense ... just nobogy speaks about it. Dr Louks gets an academic tithle for this absurd smell stuff, so I think everybody should get an academic title now . Just write a letter to your local university mentioning that you are cabable to press print on your comuter --- this should really be enough for a "Dr." title I think ....
@@coolchameleon21 when people get a phd for such a smelling stuff, the problem is that the phd is worth almost nothing. Regardless if it's a man or woman that writes the thesis- Carl Friedrich Gauss got his phd for proving what is now known as "fundamental theorem of algebra" . One of the most important theorema in mathmatics. And today people (men or women) get a phd for “Olfactory Ethics: The Politics of Smell in Modern and Contemporary Prose” ... The degeneration of Western societies could not be proven any better ....
She is very pretty. I have a feeling that this is part of why they get so mad. Because a women getting a PHD in a field they don't understand from one of the worlds best universities could already threaten them - but her also being gorgeous takes away their initial instinct of demeaning her for her looks, and they turn to violence instead..
@@JackMehof-g1qYes, we know. Smart, informed people knowing more than you freaks pissed you off so much into voting for a fascist who openly hates you lol. That's not a flex, you don't brag about doubling down on your stupidity because you felt inferior to obviously superior people
Maybe I’m just a special snowflake, but why are people on the internet getting meaner? what happened to trying to be genuine? like I’m so fucking tired of this
I think it might be because people are getting too comfortable just being the worst person they can be without consequences. Especially if they’re obsessively consuming content that reinforces their hate.
polarization and radicalization of the internet is sad people are becoming more divisive and more passionate about their beliefs, and it leads to this: men being butthurt because a woman has accomplished more than they ever will
No, actually you're right! Anonimity and everything being on social media is breeding apathy in people :( as a psychology student I'm currently doing an essay on this
Why do these guys always whine about bloodlines. Do they know how that even works? If someone has sisters or brothers or cousins, the bloodline is being carried on, lol. Not every single person born has to reproduce.
This is always my favorite point to bring up to someone with siblings and cousins - like, you know they’re carrying on your bloodline, so not every single person is obligated to reproduce even by your weird bloodline logic? That, and literally who cares about your bloodline 💀 wierdo. Lol
First off, no they have no idea how that works. But the reason they bring it up because the supposedly great people who came before them are the best thing they have.
I was pushed from childhood to keep my last name to carry it on to my children because my father didn’t have sons. I’m also gay so it seemed helpful that I’d not marry and take another man’s name (it also wasnt legal for me to marry a woman and take her name either). I had my son when I was 23 and he had the family name. Out of 6 grandchildren only one has the family name because it was VITAL that it be carried on… except my dad had a first cousin with a son who has the same last name. I’m also now estranged from my dad and his family because of a lifetime of physical abuse. So me and my son are stuck with the last name of man who beat me my whole life to preserve… what? And why? Someone else already did that. Anyway, we will be changing our last name.
the internet being the internet: textbook example. but srsly, if this isn't a testament to how genuinely dangerous this misogynist epidemic is becoming idk what is. this went from 'what a useless phd' to 'me and the boys are gonna 🍇 that pride outta u' (?!). LIKE WTF?!?
Id argue that it's always been this bad, more people are seeing it now because social media now rotates completely around anger bait. Its normalizing and encouraging this behavior
Ignore that bot ^ but unfortunately it's been this bad, there's just a lot more awareness of it now because of the internet. Sad people who will never get close to a PhD, just jealous
"She should have gotten a PhD in something useful." I'd argue that an English professor with a PhD is contributing more to society than engineers who designed the Cybertruck or any of Elon's vanity projects.
Arguably, the damage they've done to the electric vehicle's reputation is a net negative, not to mention the supporting industries and practices they've contributed to. We're not recovering those materials, for one, when the things start going up in flames.
You're 100% correct on every point, but I also think it is both a waste of life and quite depressing to measure every action by its "use" which in this case just means $$$. It is so bleak and anti-human to make "but how does it make you money?" your central priority, ever.
@@sorryjiji maybe I'm missing something, but I didn't think "use" just meant money in this case... when we say something is "useful to society" we usually mean it's a discovery or invention that helps people in some way, do we not?
as someone from a family where somewhere between a third and half of the adults have phds, the idea that you have to pick between phd and family is. rather hilarious.
They just assumed she don’t want a family like wow hoe ridiculous can they be these people are close minded and delusional many women want to have a career and have family an example is Vtuber Calliope Mori and Marine they want to have their music career and stream playing games and they also said they wan to have a family that most women but no they just think Taylor swift who don’t have kids and I don’t know if she want kid or not these guys just listen to Ben Shapiro or Matt Walsh
I mean, realistically, some are like that. I was working 120 hours a week when I did my math PhD, if you calculate sleep & stuff, there's literally not time to do anything else.
The amount of times I got told I only got promoted in the army because I had sex with someone is insane. Like literal automatic, hit time in service and time in grade, promotions that EVERYONE gets as long as they literally don't break the law or fail physical training tests. Insane. Like those men did not live in this reality.
When reading the abstract, I immediately thought about the movie "Parasite" and how a symbolism in the movie is the youngest rich kid realizing all the protagonists "smell the same", and the family thinks is the soap, but the sister points out is probably the smell of poor they all have by living where they live. So interesting!
There's also how one of the first comments in the climax is about smell and how offensive it is to the rich people. Very strong associations, not to mention that moment which would DEFINITELY leave a smell and how insulated the rich are to it while the poor have to wallow in it.
I thought about Parasite too! It’s one of those things you don’t think about but it is really fascinating how smell does influence culture. How someone is seen has inferior for “smelling bad” so i personally thought her phd thesis topic was really cool!
If anyone wants a fun(ny) piece of news lately: it is reported that Trump smells "funny" by many of the international leaders at the several conferences and meetings he's attended. Pun intended.
Also Baldur's Gate goes very specifically into vampire smell and how one of the lead romance able characters does not smell that way and he has designed a signature scent to make himself acceptable in society. Smell is important and plays a role in the media we consume. If a man said it, they would think it incredible and insightful.
Obviously, misogyny is at the forefront of this lovely tweet turning into discourse, but secondarily, I do so DESPISE people (though it's mostly men) who seem to believe anything that doesn't actively stimulate the economy or lead to you making money is a waste of time. It's such a sickening view of life, of education, of humanity.
And in the context of the human history that is a very new concept. It’s the capitalist system driving us to think everything that can’t be directly monetarily measured is worth nothing. There’s so many fields that contribute immeasurably important information for our society but the work isn’t directly making money.
I'm a femme chemist/biologist. Men have told me to my face that I should've pursued a more useful degree literally nothing women/femme people can do will be good enough.
I think it has been proven that any field that gets more women in it gets devalued over time. Before, just having a higher degree was seen as useful in itself. When women got into it and largely went for social science and humanities, that became useless fields. So everyone said to women to choose stem. So women gravitated to biology. Now as far as I know, it's seen as 'the easy' stem and thus not worth that much investment/pay. Nursing used to be a male job because it was tied to medicine. As women moved in, it got devalued and pays slash. And the opposite happens too: programing used to be a woman's job in the UK. The tech sector crashed because men didn't want the women jobs. Once it because seen as a man's job after kids from the 80s grew up and still wanted to work with computers they played with in childhood, suddenly it's the only sound educational decision you can make. It's not because of the fields. It's because we're women.😊
I’m a female engineer and I get told I’m “DEI” despite being valedictorian and having exemplary test scores and being objectively more qualified than 95% of these bitter men
So, I'm a mathematician, female, and queer. I've been a college level math tutor for six years, and recently applied to a university lecturer position at my alma mater that I'm pretty positive I'm going to get hired for. (Fingers crossed!) Genuinely terrifies me that I could have a student with these kinds of feelings. I pride myself on my intellect, work ethic, and passion for teaching others. And it frightens me a lot the kind of men that are intimidated by my success. This is my life's work and if you think I haven't had a positive impact on the world, my students would beg to differ.
Hey, female queer mathematician here too! I've encountered a couple guys like this, but in my experience, they are seen as the problem. Mathematics as a field is not sexist. The physics guys, on the other hand, can be kind of jerks.
There's also guys like me who think it's hot when women have passionate conversations about some niche topic. Probably because it means she won't think I'm weird for doing the same 😂
I can answer your question about the STEM thing. It's what we were told over the last 20 years. There was a major push in America towards STEM and we (students) were constantly told "STEM is the only thing you should study because it's the only thing that's going to get you a job. The only thing that matters in life is breaking into the tech field and securing a financial future. Don't waste your times on useless things like 'art' and 'writing', those things won't make you money." That sentiment still has not changed and it's the whole reason people are stupid enough to fall for NFTs and idolize Elon Musk.
As somebody who did graduate degrees in mathematics, and works in tech (doing good guy stuff might I add, I do social justice work, but I do the tech side of the companies because you do need data analytics to figure out whether you were actually helping and what kind of people you need to try to reach out to and stuff like that)-- people only ever have negative things to say about it. I feel. When people heard that I did math degrees the first thing they always say is I hate math. Without being asked, without saying anything else first. Like my favorite thing in life if I ever bring it up total strangers tell me how much they hate it. And then you always hear people, resentful of people who work in tech and talking shit about how tech people are ruining the economy and everything. Like dude, tech is driving practically everything that you use or at least the company behind it, but if anybody actually works on that stuff, it's like they're the devil. I make a living wage, sorry, I think everybody else should make a living wage, but I'm not gonna feel bad about making one. I literally rent a 35 person building and then rent everybody apartments at cost without making any profit, I'm actively contributing to affordable housing just as a passion project. It's not like I'm making this money exploiting people either, if a company is going to give it to me I'm gonna take it and do good stuff with it. But people treat you like you're an absolute leper. A lot of people in the tech economy or autistic guys who went directly from their parents house to working in these tech companies and don't have a lot of knowledge of the sociological factors. There are very few malicious people.
I feel this so much. In school I sucked at Maths and Science (mostly because they taught science with no context, and an undiagnosed maths disability 😢) and was the art kid who loved to write. Now I’m working to become a Marine biologist. Knowledge is cool, these people can suck it.
@@SpecialBlanket Honestly. I do feel this sentiment of “I hate maths” is also because school freaking loves to make you hate maths, and hating school makes people bond. So saying “I hate maths” is how they know to make friends. Personally Imloved doing it as a kid, found it relaxing, and then thought I hated it and was bad. Turned out I was just struggling with a learning disability and a school system that hates disabled kids. And now I’m pursuing a Marine Biology degree, and working on understanding algebra and calc. But I totally agree just saying “Oh I hate math” to someone who loves it is kinda crushing.
Even as a woman in STEM, the amount of times that I’ve felt like I’ve been judged or talked down to because I’m a woman in “a man’s field” is insane. I’ve dealt with sexual harassment, stalking, and unwanted advances so many times it’s actually crazy. I study computer science, and there have been a few times where I try to defend my position on a topic and men get hostile or angry because they think I should be quiet or shouldn’t even be there in the first place; sometimes I’ll throw an idea out for a project and it’ll immediately shot down without even exploring the concept. Men are so scared of women “invading their field” it’s insane. Support women in academia!
I work in STEM in a specialized role and the amount of times I have had to tell male coworkers not in the same role who try to tell me how to do my work "I am the expert on this subject, you are not. There is a reason you are in your role and I am in mine and it is because we specialize in different things. So no I am not implementing your dog water idea, let's move on." is insane. Sometimes the dog water comment is said with my inside thoughts, sometimes it's said with my outside voice. Depends on how abrasive they have been/how absolutely dog water their "suggestion" is.
I feel like the ‘synonyms’ comment really sums it up - you’re so uneducated about the topic that you can’t recognize how these are specific terms in the literary field, yet you feel comfortable insulting the intellect of a woman who just submitted her PhD at Cambridge. On a happier note, I’m excited to read this - and cite it in my own PhD paper - once it is no longer under embargo.
Yeah, as someone with a bachelor's in literature, I've noticed it is always the ones most ignorant about the written word who complain the loudest about our field
I appreciate that you've spent a good portion of this video talking about her actual work rather than only focusing on the drama. I also think you may be able to associate memory with taste, though this is anectdotal. I used to use different tic tac and gum flavors while studying because we were allowed to have them while test taking 10/10 reccomend.
that makes a lot of sense bc aren’t smell and taste connected in a way? like you can’t taste if you can’t smell and vice versa :D i need to keep that tic tac trick in mind that’s so smart actually
this too. Last school year, I would chew a lot of gum during my math class-- specifically watermelon-flavored gum from the brand Extra. One day when I was home and opened my math book to do my homework,,, my tongue was almost,, producing the taste in a way? Like, it was simulating the taste a little bit so I could feel influenced to grab gum, if that makes sense. It was so strange and subtle and the only reason I even realized it was happening and it stuck out to me is because I don't typically chew gum at home
I don't have a PhD because I couldn't fund graduate school (thanks United States). But I do have two Bachelors degrees, one in History, and one in Art History. The number of times men have told me that these are useless and a waste of time is monumental. If I had a dollar for every time I have been told this by men might fund my graduate school.
I have a degree in history and a public school teaching license, and the comments about that being a "useless" endeavor are non-stop. Meanwhile, the same people who make those comments are the same people who complain about the quality of public education going down the drain because experienced and highly-qualified teachers are leaving the field in droves; some of them are literally taking up careers as managers at places like Walmart because the pay is better. The reality is that they would rather fund jails than fund schools, and they expect that teachers will work for a pittiance and tow the line when it comes to enforcing their political agenda (it literally doesn't matter what subject they teach). I legitimately want to know what all of them are going to do when all of the "useless" teachers quit to the point where schools can't remain open. Where are their kids going to go? I hope they realize that managing and cleaning up after crime and homelessness is more costly to society than an education, even a "useless" one.

On the bright side this woman will inspire others and has accomplished more than most of these jackxxx.
Thank you for this! I saw this drama earlier in the week and it really frustrated me. I’m a woman in academia in the UK, currently studying for my Creative + Critical Writing PhD (which on a very basic level is about using non-linear temporalities and hybrid literary forms to represent own-voice experiences of psychosis). One thing that annoys me is that people assume they’re somehow funding our research, it’s coming out of taxpayers money etc. when in reality, very few PhD students take the government loan (as it’s too small to live off), instead we apply for studentships from the research council (these are very competitive, and work like a salary, not a loan) and/or we work. I myself get a studentship and also work full-time. Anyway, us humanities postgrads get a lot of stick, so it’s nice to be defended for once! :)
if someone tells me they think a humanities degree is useless i immediately know they know nothing about anything. the lack of respect for humanities is a big part of the reason why progress in fields like tech is so ethically and morally dubious nowadays. i took a class on the philosophy of science and in discussions my points were dismissed by my classmates because of my background in linguistics while in the same breath they would try to excuse the deeds or a n*zi scientist because "he cared so much about his research and wasn't an active member of the party". if you try to convince me that people who speak a different dialect of english are all uneducated, or that sign language is just pantomime, i immediately know that you don't really know how anything works. listening to people in humanities is so so so necessary for our progress. also that thesis sounds incredibly interesting, i hope i'm able to access it thru my university to read later
It’s so true. I work in STEM and although scientific writing is incredibly important, it feels very intellectually impoverished compared to the great economic, political, and social historians of the past. I hadn’t realized how much I missed the humanities until recently.
Ill be honest, the Indian thing blew my mind. Not in that i dont believe that its common in lots of places, but that... WHY. Infian food is friggin' amazing and if i smelled it anywhere, I'd probably just get really hungry. But i used to live where it was common and now live where there's none, and i miss both the cuisine and the people!
It's not the smell of cooking curry- that smells amazing. It's that the smell permeates into everything and is very hard to get rid of. Stale curry odour leaching from the walls is unpleasant and new tenants don't want that. You can paint the walls, but it will still be in all the cupboards. The kitchen where I live smells like curry, even though no one here has cooked curry in the 10 years we've been here.
I mean, that thesis sounds super interesting. From literary evolution, cultural zeitgeist, sociological implications, and behavioral psychology... it sounds so dense and fascinating. I'd love to read through something like that!
I recently started my master in computer science. Some men in my proximity told me that it is a waste of time and I shouldn’t go ahead with my education…I felt sooo bad about this until my partner suggested that those men (yes not all men but literally always men) are jealous because I’m preceding in my academic career. I’m glad that my partner is so understanding and that they always support me. But everyone that tried to talk me out of doing my masters were men….so yeah..kinda proves the point of this video.
@ but it’s going to be my opportunity to go into research and that is my goal. Most of my professors from my bachelor’s told me I should step foot into research. And it is making me a better CS already. The courses I’m taking are helping me at my job already. Edit: I just saw your other comments…bro you are just proving the point here 😂
Do it! Graduate research is such a different world and it is incredibly rewarding. You have something to offer and please don’t ever let them try and take that from you.
i have a bachelors of science in neuroscience and i got told my degree is useless. i’m going to be using this degree during an research internship where i will be helping discover ways to repair spinal cords to undo paralysis and other debilitating conditions. this research is in collaboration with a local veterans hospital meaning that when its complete and proven safe for humans it will help veterans gain back their mobility after trauma from active duty but yeah totally useless
There's over 7 billion people on the planet. I won't be adding anymore and I'm pretty happy about that. These people are hardcore sunken cost into parenting.
I’d be showing off my achievement too, I’m glad this lady is taking it well with all the hate, at the end of the day, the men saying negative stuff are outing themselves out as insecure little babies, it’s definitely a true sign of fragile masculinity This woman fully deserves her PhD and should be very proud of what she wrote❤❤
And none of those dudes are capable of achieving anything close. Not a PhD but I’m currently getting my masters and fuck is it hard. Academia may be full of bullshit but getting a graduate degree is not for the faint of heart and not just anyone can do it.
Good 😊 I’m not a school person, I’ve never been the type to get straight As on everything. I am currently getting my M.S. and plan to get my PhD someday and I won’t lie, it’s rough!! Don’t let any of this garbage ever get to you. You will work your ass off and get a degree and will be able to support yourself forever and get a pension when you retire. The thing that annoys me the most about these biological essentialism bros is they claim to know a lot of “basic” facts… yet don’t. Here’s a basic fact, women have always worked, men have stolen brilliant women’s intellectual property throughout history (F. Scott Fitzgerald was one), and women have historically kept the country afloat and performed their husband’s job duties just as well if not better when their husbands went off to war. Ask me about female pilots during WWII. It’s infuriating.
phds are such a huge achievement, grad school is a monster. phds can take up to EIGHT YEARS depending on what you’re studying. these men are so envious and bitter because a woman actually accomplished something that they would never be capable of
@@JackMehof-g1q you certainly seem like someone who doesn’t value education or intelligence. droll. i would tell you that you should learn how to hide your insecurities better, but that would require self reflection and restraint in your part….
As an American holy CANNOLI can we NEVER shut the hell up about anything ever, you are very much correct about that. That said, that gal's thesis sounds genuinely interesting. I've never thought about smell in that way before. I'm not on twitter anymore so I missed this entire debacle, so thanks for the video!!
Thank you for talking about this!! It’s a small pet peeve of mine when people use Modern and Contemporary interchangeably. They are different time periods! My sister in law finished her PHD last year in social work while raising 4 children (aged 4-11 at the time) so it’s possible to do both! And for me, I can’t have children and can’t afford treatments so I pursued my MFA. PHDs in the USA for art are so rare and exclusive that I’ve been considering moving to Ireland to get my PHD. When I shared a photo of me on the day of my masters graduation in 2016, the amount of hate I got from men especially was astounding. I am so sorry she’s going through this but even her experience may allow future PHD students to study this type of phenomenon.
I'm a woman studying in STEM right now, and I can say that both STEM AND the humanities are so important for society. One doesn't cancel out the other!!!
Hang in there haha. I’m getting my M.S in a medical profession and I am also an artist (not professionally). The most important thing to me in a job is making the most money I can. I would love to go to art school and pursue my passions but I just can’t. I respect humanities and arts professionals. What’s the point of existing in a utilitarian state with no art or literature?
The way people literally do not understand the point of a thesis. And the way people don’t understand that if something isn’t instantly profitable it’s a waste of time.
I hate the whole “taxpayers pay for graduate degrees” shit. Grad students are literally free labor for the university. They are exploited to teach millions of freshmen for almost no money. The money they do get for stipends comes from undergrad tuition (the university’s cash cow). Grad students aren’t taking anyone’s taxes bro.
They're actually envious, because jealousy is over something they HAVE, and envy is over something they WANT/don't have. Basically, it's even more heinous because they're not even being 'threatened' in any way in the first place?
Even if she had gotten a doctorate in a stem field, all these same people would do is start complaining about DEI placements and women not having to work hard at all and ruining the field. They’re mad at the current state of the world and/or their own personal insecurities but instead of being mad at political figures who are worsening quality of life or getting professional help, they attack people they view as their inferiors online. Whether that’s women, queer people, people of color, disabled people, etc., they find ways to make it their fault that they’re not satisfied or feel threatened that their achievements don’t set them apart from anyone else.
@@JackMehof-g1q You mean being open to ppl degrading ppl for no reason? Oh no she used the block function on a website that has the block function for a reason
Congratulations to Dr. Ally on her PhD! Also, fascism is real considering the LENGTHS people went to prove their anti-intellectualism. Everyday, they’re just proving her thesis right lol P.S. It was also nice to see the solidarity she received as well.
Hey, that’s a great idea for a thesis. Lol. “How far biological essentialism twitter bros will go to prove their anti intellectualism: a retrospective”
As a candle reviewer, I appreciate the fact that she studied and wrote an academic paper on scent. Scents can absolutely invoke certain feelings and pictures within our minds (hence why candle companies call it a “scent story”). But collecting candles, perfumes, body products, or other scented items is considered a feminine hobby, so it’s looked down upon. I suspect that she faced a lot of criticism for choosing this area of study, and I’m so so glad she persevered. I’d love to read her paper!
My aunt was the only female actuary at her job in the 70s. She was a brilliant mathematician and coder. She was also tall and beautiful. The amount of harassment she faced was unmatched.
9:40 it IS the most offensive thing that’s ever happened to these men, because they don’t face systemic oppression and still don’t have doctorates. edited to clarify: some cis men do face systemic oppression for other aspects of their lives, like race, economic class, disability, etc. none of them face systemic oppression and discrimination for their gender.
16:38 "When this kind of welfare was available to men it led to great scientific discoveries and works of art." I assume this person is talking about the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment eras in Europe. What is funny about that tweet to me is that so many thinkers during those times participated in many different disciplines. For example, René Descartes, who is one of the most famous Enlightenment philosophers, also was a huge pioneer in mathematics (specifically geometry). The way men talk about the "useless" degrees that women pursue in the arts and humanities is laughable because men like Descartes are heralded as geniuses for doing very similar things. The devaluing of arts and humanities compared to STEM fields is also absurd because they are so intimately tied together throughout human history. Before cameras existed, one would have to be a skilled artist/illustrator to record their findings accurately. Also, being able to write and communicate well is integral to all fields! All this to say, men (and other people in general) who think like this and purposefully misrepresent history to further their own flawed rhetoric are repugnant. In their hypocrisy, they are proving the importance of fields like history, philosophy, and other arts/humanities. I am currently attending university right now and pursuing a degree in STEM, but I will always appreciate the value that the arts and humanities hold. I think I would be a much worse scientist if I did not have an appreciation for writing, rhetoric, communication, history, philosophy and so much more.
I completely agree. I am much stronger in my particular STEM field because I have an extensive prior academic background in history and economic theory. It’s amazing how many scientists would be viewed as uncultured boors by even twentieth century intellectual standards.
That’s part of it, but the root is actually misunderstanding. The fact that they don’t understand the difference between modern and contemporary in this context tells you that they’re right on the peak of stupid confidence; the Dunning-Kruger effect. Those men don’t understand her thesis, they don’t understand the purpose of her thesis within the field of English lit, they don’t even understand the purpose of graduate research in the first place.
On a side note, my friends is going to a college where a lot of the women are from parts of India or around India, and whenever they cook, it smells lovely but strong. Their food smells good if you have had their food. Seriously, most people don't like the smell of something because they have never had it.
I’m Indian and I really appreciate you making the point about spices. In some countries people won’t even rent to Indians because of the smell of spices (which is BS bc spices are not like cigarette smoke and the smell dissipates when you open a window).
Most of my family members either have PhDs or Law degrees WHILE HAVING CHILDREN, so these uneducated men thinking you have to choose between having kids and having a PhD is hilarious! 😂
Feel like there's just a classic projection of insecurities of the conditions of the world people live in onto this poor women. I get the feeling of inequality in that many people never have or will have the opportunity to dedicate so much time to a PDH or have the funds for the tuition but to act like its this woman's fault, that's she's undeserving or any of her work is irrelevant is really misogynistic and diverts the real problems these men have onto women as a group and it's sad :(
33:14 I read that story too! I read it in 10th grade and we had a whole discussion about it and so many girls where like ‘well it never said that both men and WOMEN took the test therefore are there women that are smarter than most of the men?’ And then the few boys in my class (bc it was an honors lit class there were only like 5 boys in it) got really mad lol
If you didn't study the topic, you probably don't know enough about it to say it's useless, because the applications are something you would definitely learn while studying.😅
26:31 When you just google “definition of modern” and “definition of contemporary” it’s the same or similar definition. So I once posted a status on Threads about me not caring what happens to billionaires who hoard money and don't contribute them to society. When I told them I volunteer for shelters they said it doesn't count because I'm not rich...like what??
I think that on the surface level, they don’t like educationfor the sake of education. However, I also think you can’t separate the rise in this chatter from the fact that women are achieving more in education. It’s very similar to the chatter from some Talking Heads on the right that are now starting to question democracy. It’s not a big question democracy. It’s that they thought that they couldn’t win election elections by popular majority

Comment on the thesis from someone far outside the field but reads a lot: I started thinking about how often food/cooking smells are used to describe people meant to make the character feel safe. Then I started to think about how profession was communicated with things like smells of oil for mechanics or antiseptics for doctors (I don't think I have ever seen it used to describe cleaners though). I have the distinct impression pine smell is used when a character that is a cleaner is being introduced that is a good character or viewed favorably by the story.
I've never considered this before but when thing like this happen it just makes me feel so blessed that my partner actively encouraged me to do my Masters degree and supported me every step of the way, and is so excited for me to get my PhD (one day in the future I am so academically burned out rn lol)
Of course they do because they are to ignorant to knock off their fragile masculinity these type of men are the reason feminists became a thing the first place!

So interesting!
There's also how one of the first comments in the climax is about smell and how offensive it is to the rich people. Very strong associations, not to mention that moment which would DEFINITELY leave a smell and how insulated the rich are to it while the poor have to wallow in it.

@VampireClubDJ Enby Maths student here, thank you for this comment, and good luck, fingers crossed!!

Not exaggerating no one should use twitter anymore

I think the what about me phenomenon is where this hate is coming from in the first place.
That def plays a big role imo
That’s part of it, but the root is actually misunderstanding. The fact that they don’t understand the difference between modern and contemporary in this context tells you that they’re right on the peak of stupid confidence; the Dunning-Kruger effect. Those men don’t understand her thesis, they don’t understand the purpose of her thesis within the field of English lit, they don’t even understand the purpose of graduate research in the first place.
On a side note, my friends is going to a college where a lot of the women are from parts of India or around India, and whenever they cook, it smells lovely but strong.
