One of my favorite lines in song is, "If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay, you minimize my movement anyway, I must persuade you another way"
In my first marriage I was in a very emotionally abusive relationship my ex wife was horrible and this song has always been one of my favorites also if you haven’t yet I recommend listening to their song culling voices it’s amazing live and in the studio
There's a version of this from their Salival EP that has all the same lyrics, but the tone changes the meaning. It's much more ethereal, almost dreamlike. Still ends the same way though. Almost like destruction is the only possible end to this abuse and anger.
I choose this version every time. Probably because I happen to really focus and pay attention to it first, but the added crescendo of emotion and dynamics takes it to another level. It’s like a healing trance
Where you hear bees, I'd always heard flies, invoking images of death, decay and, well, shit. The word is right there in the title and tool is well known for using double entendres.
I got so so much out of this, thank you, sir. I have been a Tool fan for decades and always felt this perspective on the lyrics was a journey. Maynard used music as a way to heal and release. Music Heals!!!
And thanks too for bravely discussing something rarely talked about, namely power dynamics in asymmetrical relationships.. Which Maynard also touched on so strongly.🦊
Read all the comments and love that this song and your breakdown mean so much to people. Definitely one of my favorites! Now I ask all of you to rewind and relisten to it as a struggle between a person and their own ego 😉
Tool was the first band I saw live, saw them in 98. This song had a crazy effect on the crowd, best I can describe it is like a sponge being wringed, everybody pushing in different directions. At one point I could just lift my legs up and the crowd would carry me 10-15 ft. Then a mini mosh pit would form for a few seconds before collapsing and then we are all pushing another direction, was crazy fun lol.
Thanks man for helping me me put not just this song but but maybe their entire body of content into some usable context(if that's even possible)😵💫😵💫😵💫
8:05 ya damn right! Lol I love the subtle glance over. What else can you say? Lol The audio engineering and Danny in that measure… Yea this is a gift to you Danny gives odes to Neil in later albums too
Tool albums tell a story. The song be for this is Jimmy. It's directed to his inner child, trying to figure out what happened and trying to heal. Pushit is about trying to survive the self abuse from the inner child.
at 8:45 in your video when the sound really comes down, to me that is dissociation. 'put m someplace I don't want to be.".. it is here you get some major key hints from the guitar. This is the happy place you go to save your psyche during abuse.
I’m nearing 45, born in 80. I loved this song since this album came out when I was 16. In 18, I lost my dream of family through a necessary divorce, unfortunately with two children involved. This song perfectly describes the failing of my marriage. It’s not just about interpersonal conflict it’s a lyrical extrapolation of Cold and Ugly off the first LP. When you wed Cold and Ugly, your divorce is Pushit.
Maynard had a relationship with a woman that he felt was toxic...no matter how much they loved each other...he also wrote another the or APC called,Brena` Knowing we are toxic and that it will only lead to "war".
The entire song is about MJKs abusive step-father. He lived with him and his mother in Ohio and his mother was mostly innocent and vulnerable due to her stroke. MJK eventually moved to Michigan to live with his actual father and he has said that was the best thing he ever did for himself. Interestingly sometimes in these situations all you need is a change of environment to find/free yourself. The song Jimmy goes into the struggle about this within MJK himself reconnecting with the innocent child version of himself that was robbed in childhood helping those memories find the light now that he has healed.
To me the end of this song is when you have gathered enough strength to stand up for yourself... You will NOT take it anymore you WILL break free. Even if it does damage the other person.
PLEASE do the Salival live version of this song. You won’t regret it.
Came here to say the same, amazing variant of the song.

Also, check out the alternate version they did of this song on their unofficial live album Salival. Same lyrics but different musical arrangement.
That's what I always thought. Flies hovering over a decaying body (relationship)
This album uninterrupted all the way through is a must, many times. I’ve been doing that for almost thirty years. Best album of the nineties.

Jim, I love all of your Tool analyses. They're always spot on to how I interpret it, but with deeper insights. Keep up the good work!
“Rest your trigger on my finger” is one of the greatest lines ever written.
"If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay" Another great line in the song.
"What are you but my reflection, who am I to judge or strike you down" is a contender for that position
There. Is. No. Love. In. Fear.
another quote from the bible- Maynard is sneaky.
I would like to request "Prison Sex" by Tool. Always a great song for therapist analysis.

Tool also reminds me a lot of
JETRO TULL,
One of the most underrated bands to come of the 70's.

Tool and Rush are the two bands that formed my life. Definitely not a bad comparison in my opinion.❤

You should do A Perfect Circle album Thirteen Step.
I also recommended this in Patreon. Great songs!
I have always interpreted this song, at least in part, as the relationship between new father and infant, not just partner.

Yeah, Neal and Danny were good friends.
Great review to a beautiful song.
You know you are over the breakup when this song no longer stings.
🤘🏻🌀
Another great video, thank you. Where can I get that awesome lyric generator?
Check out the Salival version
What's also scary here is that he's warning what could happen if he's pushed to his limit
13:30 Black Sabbath+Led Zeppelin+Pink Floyd+Rush= Tool

Tool emphasises the ROLL. in rock n roll.
U dont rock to tool. You roll to tool
The song was my life.
Her doctors told me she was the worst bipolar manic depressant case they had personally ever dealt with.
Thanks for watching
