Psychotherapist Reacts To Bo Burnham - That Funny Feeling
In this video, I dive into Bo Burnham's hauntingly poignant song "That Funny Feeling" from his Netflix special "Inside." I explore the layers of existential dread, societal commentary, and emotional complexity woven into his lyrics and delivery. Join me as I unpack the subtle humor, raw vulnerability, and cultural critique that make this song resonate so deeply with so many. We'll talk about the psychological themes present, how they reflect the modern human condition, and what we can learn from Bo's introspective artistry.

The butterfly is also a motif of the lyrics from 1000 Mile Journey: 'A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Plowing out the rows, the bleeding of the rose. A butterfly's wings can start tornadoes, don't ya know.'

I want to thank you! Thank you!!! I am a 55 year old woman. I've suffered from Complex PTSD almost all my life! Traumas started at age 7. I have tried therapy many many times. Always heard...'Wow! That's a lot! You are complicated!' Or have gone back for my next appointment and the therapist i was talking with wasn't there anymore! Happened a few times actually. The thought of having to start from the beginning has been just an exhausting one. I haven't spoke with one for over 20 years! I need to desperately!! Watching your reaction and listening to your message has given me hope to try once more! I believe in signs! Thank you!

My second time commenting on this. I haven’t spoken to my father in years. I’ve never heard him say, “ I love you,” hug me with more than one arm, ask me about what life was like after mom packed us up and left, make a real effort outside of talking cars or sports, and has no idea he didn’t protect me from a monster when I was 4. I still cry when I listen to this song and want to send it to him but only to say “it’s nobody’s fault and it’s okay. We just didn’t know how to be a good son or a good dad. I hope you forgive me before one of us is gone.”

The Pot, for me, is about the "War on Drugs" by the Reagan administration. A review was commissioned by him into the dangers of "various" drugs due to the growing cocaine issues and cartel power in the U.S.A. The independent commission made it absolutely clear marijuana was less addictive than tobacco, less socially harmful than alcohol, or cocaine, the main drug of the request. The "kangaroo done hung the guilty with the innocent" refers to Reagan deciding a "mixed message" (r.e. nuanced) where he said "cocaine is bad, but marijuana isn't" was too complex. There is also the fact it would have been too easy for Americans to grow it, and it couldn't be taxed, it would have hemorrhaged the alcohol and tobacco industries. That's why the song is called "The Pot" - it is all about the cartoonish and bad reasons for the illegalisation of marijuana.

Best TOOL reaction I've ever seen! The band is meant to be a "tool" of self-transformation or growth. "Tool" is supposedly slang for male genitalia as well. So it's like extremely serious and sincere in a way you've never seen... but occasionally juvenile or provocative in their methods. An attempt to balance out the self-help/cultish vibe that could be seen as pretentious. Well, try as they might it still happened. The number one critique of both TOOL and their fans is that they are overly pretentious.

No rehearsal One take. The entire crew was in floods of tears. And his father said, “Why is everybody crying? I’m still here.” After the song came out, many, many people went to get tested to get in the kidney donor registry, and a man with their same surname (not a cousin as many people believed) was a match for Captain Blunt.

Just some info.. Ren came up with the original tale of "Jenny" after reading an article in a news paper about the murder of a prostitute in London by a young lad, someone commented in the article "It's such a shame", which is why it is so prominent in the song. Violet died in 2005, the tale of "Jenny" was released in 2019, which is why Screech and Jenny are 14 years old n the song. Jenny was 14 years old and walking the streets of London in high heels indicating she was a "working" girl ("she'd walked these streets 1000 times before"). Screech got his nickname from being "quick on his feet", "screech" being the sound trainers make as you dodge and run on an indoor training court. "The blade that could slice concrete" was actual a line in a tv advertisement in the 80's/90's IRC on late night shopping channels. When Screech tries to meet up with his girlfriend and she tells him she's busy, she was busy (cough cough) being with Patrick (Ren confirmed this) The tales are a generational story of abuse and the victims of abuse, Jenny much like her mother kept quiet and accepted her fate in silence and resignation, Screech was reactionary and quick to anger just like his father. What many people fail to understand is that Screech although the "obvious" bad guy in the tales, he was only 14, he had been brought up in foster care or an orphanage, he was obviously not being given the help/support/discipline he needed at that age in that situation, and from the moment he fatefully turned the corner and met Jenny face to face everything he did was fear, adrenaline fueled reactions to a situation that rapidly spiralled out of his control... Suffice to say, Screech was the bad guy, but he was also a victim as well, and I think that, that is the whole point of the story Ren tries to get across "It's such a shame".

Thanks for mentioning how hard it must be for the father. That role change is just as hard on the father than it is on the son. Only difference is the father loves his son unconditionally. I hope my son will be just like that, but it makes me sad. We'd both know it hurts. True love, in those hard moments, hurts. I'd never want my son to be hurt, thus making this even more hurtful. I've watched a lot of reacts to this song mentioning how hard it is for the son, this is the first one acknowledging the pain of the father.

Older TOOL was often dark, raw, and real. There was no sugar coating. It was one of the things that first drew me to the band. Hiding from the darker side of human behavior will accomplish nothing. As uncomfortable as it may make people, we need to acknowledge these things to have any chance of fixing them. Acknowledgement to the band for being brave enough to shine a light on it, and to you for you're excellent reaction.

I agree with most of this except the Bonnie and Clyde analysis. I think “the killing your commuting is career suicide” is pointing out that he gave them both multiple chances not only to do the right thing but also to work with him personally. Instead they buckled down in their greed which cost kujo followers and got him out on blast by Renegades, but that’s just me. Either way I love your videos and the Renegades series, keep up the great work!

On nearly every line, Ren closes off his consonants cleanly. However, on "the devil comes to dance", Ren doesn't close it, he drags that "s" sound into a hiss. No doubt that was intentional.

you dont happen to work in sweden at times?(or teach others in your field abroad sometimes?) im on a decades long search for that "person on the other side of the desk" who actually reacts and show reactions to music and what it says.... im bad with words and putting words to important things like feelings and thoughts. so i use songs. as the years go i only encounter more and more "robots" on the other side of the desk. how am i gonna be able to share/talk with a person who wont show emotion or reaction themselves. and with music and songs as medium to atleast start to try and express and get a blank stare back... yeah its been decades. (im only mid 30's) not sure how many times i gotten up and just walked out the door during a "introduction" meeting as its just a "robot" on the other side. heck dont have to understand "me" from a song or lyrics etc. just react give me a take on their take on it. instead of flat face "oh you like music, but what is your problem" as response.
