If you think this banger is raw and powerful gotta listen to "silver springs" from this 1997 the dance tour, Stevie not only writing about her ex but making him perform it as well, Stevie giving it to him! with those eyes glaring right at him and seemingly yelling those powerful lyrics right at him!!!
Silver Springs is Stevie's response to this song. It got left off Rumors, but the performance from this same concert is stunning. I think the only better Fleetwood Mac live performance than Silver Springs from The Dance concert is the recording of "Rhiannon" from the February 27, 1976 show of "The Midnight Special". You can find it on their channel. There are other videos of the performance there, but this one has the best sound quality.
Other people have mentioned it but it bears repeating: the bewitching power of some of these songs really is fueled by the tension Stevie and Lindsay. As many people have said "Taylor Swift breaks up with you and writes a song about it. Stevie Nicks breaks up with you, writes a song about it and makes you play it and sing it with her, over and over and over again, for nearly 50 years." 🤟🤣
Lindsey is a much under rated guitarist and songwriter. His style of fingerpicking blows my mind to this day. And you are correct, the tension and chemistry between him and Stevie in this performance is palpapble.
When you first started this it sounded like your playback speed was a little too fast, but when you stopped and went back to the beginning it felt right.
Yeah, he had it on a 2x or 3x playback speed…. I caught that right away and was wondering if he was going to review/enjoy it a fuckered up like that. Glad he slowed it down.
@@candacemay7187 Having done my share of editing over the years - primarily audio but some video, too - I know that it's happened to ME once in a while that I've edited in an alternate take....and then with one thing and another have forgotten to go back and edit out the earlier version. Didn't happen often but it HAS happened.
I have been a fan of Fleetwood Mac since 1969 when they came out with a song called "Oh Well." It's a short kickass song worth checking out, but it is a very different band. ❤❤❤
Love this concert. I remember when it came out on PBS back in '97 - I believe it was the 20th anniversary of their Rumours album. To check out more of Lindsey's phenomenal guitar playing, check out from this concert "Big Love" - it sounds like there's three guitar players, but there's just him playing PLUS singing at the same time!
Yes, not only the 20th anniversary of Rumours, but the 30th anniversary of of Fleetwood Mac as a band. And I agree with you about Big Love. His playing is mind-blowing.
At some point, you owe it to yourself to just sit and watch this entire show from beginning to end. Not for reaction purposes, just because it's absolutely "lightning caught in a bottle" amazing.
I've been into Fleetwood Mac from before Stevie Nicks. We loved listening to Christine McVie. She had a special singing voice. But for me my favorite Fleetwood Mac song back then was "HYPNOTIZED". Friends would travel to NYC to see their concerts. When Stevie Nicks & Lindsy Buckingham joined they were an even better group.
Impossible to choose a favorite Fleetwood Mac song, but this is definitely in the top 5. This performance showed off all of their strengths from writing to playing to singing. From this same concert, look for Silver Springs. THAT's the ultimate breakup revenge song on full public display.
Fleetwood Mac began as a very Bohemian band. And it was still this way with the album this is from "Rumors". That's why you're hearing that distortion. Plus, ever wondered why Stevie Nicks wears those dresses? For the same reason. Unbelievable. This is the only version to listen to. This came out when I was a senior in high school. Love them.
The late luthier Rick Turner custom made the Model I for Lindsey Buckingham after discussions they had during the making of Rumours. Lindsey played on strats and telecasters before he joined FM. Mick wanted him to use the traditional Les Paul all the previous FM guitarist used. (also wanted him to use a pick - didn't happen) The Les Paul gave a bigger warmer sound but not the clarity of a strat for his finger picking. Turner built Lindsey a guitar that could do both also with an acoustic overlay. He presented it to Lindsey during Tusk tour rehearsals in 1979 and Lindsey has used it as his primary electric stage guitar ever since. Turner has a small range of the Model 1's but it flagship model is the Model 1-LB (named for Buckingham). John Meyer uses a variant model.
Supposedly Stevie Nicks had given a silver chain bracelet to keyboardist Christine McVie. Signifying the committment to staying together as a band. Not only the Stevie/Lindsay breakup, but also the end of the marriage of bassist John McVie "Mac" and Christine McVie occured about the same time (1976). Drummer Mick Fleetwood was also going through a divorce at the time. The album name Rumours (45 million sold) in a way dealt with all the turmoil in the band members' relationships. Another couple songs about the Stevie/Lindsay breakup were "Go Your Own Way" and "Dreams"
Check out "Landslide" and "Don't Stop thinking about Tomorrow." Fleetwood Mac had a messy history with each other. It's a miracle they stayed together as a band. I saw them in concert in the late 70s. One of the best bands of my generation.
I started learning guitar on my own when I was 16 years old. I have never seen a guitarist like Lindsey Buckingham before or since Fleetwood Mac. I'm 59 years old and I've been a fan of Fleetwood Mac since I was a little kid. My older cousin did 3 tours with the 5th air calv in Vietnam and was highly decorated. He's always been a hero to me and when I found out that Fleetwood was one of his favorites that sealed it for me.
FM was the soundtrack to my high school years. It was between them and the Eagles as my favorite group in the 70s. So much GOOD music then, we were spoiled!!
I am blessed to have seen Fleetwood Mac 3 times, the Rumors tour, Tusk (in LA with the USC marching band!) and this, The Dance concert. They are so great live, I grew up on Fleetwood Mac and will always love them
June 30th 2013, Spokane Washington was a stop on their tour. Christine Mcvie was the only member not present. My oldest daughter (who is now 17) was 5 years old at the time and got to witness in person, one of the greatest bands to ever grace a stage. This was by far the best show I have ever witnessed. Fleetwood Mac is in my top 5 favorite groups/bands/music of all time. I'm only 39 years old and thank my momma everyday for the music I grew up on. Nothing beats it. Never will.
If you want raw on-stage emotion and chemistry, you have to check out "Silver Spring" from this concert; Stevie wrote it after their break up. So many of the tracks from the Rumours album form an evocative call and response; you have to give them credit as song-writers and musicians for being able to continue to create and perform together in spite of their intense and sometimes tense interpersonal dynamic.
Listened to ALOT of Fleetwood Mac back in the day....saw them in person in Los Angeles. Very special...magical.....Stevie Nicks, Lindsey on guitar....great band, with their own sound.
This music comes from actual musicians playing musical instruments and the sound of the human voice expressing emotion and artistry. This is NOT the sound of computer generated and synthesized sounds and auto-tuned noise. There is no comparison.
You need to hear the studio version too. One of the greatest bass solos - simple, but the tension in it is amazing. On the studio version Lindsay uses a Dobro to get that sound. There was some serious tension in the band too, as you point out. They were all writing songs about each other - "You Make Loving Fun", "Go Your Own Way", "Second Hand News"... How they stayed together as a band is a miracle.
Sebs, if you are going to keep reacting to Fleetwood Mac, don’t sleep on Christine McVie--the other, other lead singer and pianist. Over My Head, You Make Loving Fun, Songbird, Everywhere. Gone at 79, yet still far too early. The lady always lived up to her maiden name, Christine Perfect.
I listened to the album version of this show on repeat when I was 8 every day for a good 3 years. Still one of my favorite live albums and performances
Watch them perform “Tusk” at the same concert (the USC marching band joins in.) Also, Fleetwood Mac has been back on tour - without Christine McVie as she passed away. To this day, Stevie and Lindsey sort of tolerate each other. 😂 But some of their best music came out of the angst.
Sebs, it's also worth listening to the studio version of the song, which is friggin' amazing! I agree that you should react to "Silver Springs" live version. The intensity of the interplay between Stevie and Lindsey is powerful.
I've been listening to Fleetwood Mac since the late 60's. Stevie Nix definitely has a one of a kind voice. A great band with timeless songs. Music isn't produced like this anymore.
In 1973. My dad bought an album called Buckingham and Nicks, the only of they did before they joined Fleetwood Mac, and I still have that album. It’s on TH-cam. You can listen to the whole album. It’s all acoustic. It’s amazing.
It was partly called the Chain and credited to all the band members, because it was scraps of other songs pieced or chained together into something new. Stevie wrote a demo song called The Chain with had the a completly different sound and lyrics that ware altered for this version; Christine's demo Keep Me There included the instrumental from the bass solo to the end of the song; and the intro was a recycled piece of a Buckingham Nicks song from before they joined the band.
One of my very favorite Fleetwood Mac songs I used to listen to on FM radio when I was in high school. It was so soothing and beautiful. "Woman of 1,000 Years" from the "Future Games" album released in 1971. Amazing song.
The breakup song that was truly personal was Silver Springs sung in this show by Stevie to Lindsey. That is worth reacting to also. The Chain is really a group song, and talks about both breakups (Stevie+Lindsey and Christine and John McVie, who were married). The Chain was more about keeping the bonds of the Chain of the band together despite the personal issues. It was the bands signature song.
Not sure if you’re aware of TH-cam channel Professor of Rock. He does interviews of rockers and does deep dives into the rock music world. He gives back stories on artists careers as well as back stories on the music itself. One example is his interview of Ann Wilson of Heart. Also FYI, John Fogerty of CCR has his own TH-cam channel where he gives the story behind his black guitar. You’re welcome. 😉🤘🏼❤🎉
My connection is 89/90 we had a highschool rock band and our year we were fleetwood mac...it was an intricate cover band basically. Miami beach senior high. We had 5 girl singers 1 guy main and all instruments 1 boy drums 1 girl drums. We even had a tour bus. This program made the papers, all on parental donations and past alumni, even a girl from 90s group expose.
Check out the live version from the mirage tour 82 it's up there with on of the best live version's of this song. You can see lindsey basically singing but shouting and screaming back and forth with stevie on stage. Just pure magic.
The original song is the only song that was made up of individual parts recorded at different times. Then it was dubbed together in the studio. Johns bass line was going to be a different song. Stevie gave them the lyrics for the verses. Lindsey and Christine wrote the music and the chorus lyrics. The band loved Mick's and John's ending. Lindsey added the guitar over the ending, and 'The Chain' was made. It's the only Fleetwood Mac song credited to all five members of their 1977 lineup.
Fleetwood Mac were the OG break-up song writers. Not only did they write about their ex, but they had their exes sing and play Instruments on the songs. Lindsey (lead singer on this track) dated Stevie Nicks (center stage), John McVie (the bass player) was married to Christine McVie (the blonde playing the piano). The song The Chain was on the album Rumours, which came out in 1977. This was Fleetwood Mac's highest selling album of all time. Because of the tone of each song, everyone could relate. This album is my personal favorite of theirs.
You’ve gotta watch Silver Springs from this same concert. It’s such an intense performance that there appears to be an entire conversation happening between Stevie and Lindsey while they’re singing this song. The eye contact is incredible and at times give you chills. And the song is absolutely beautiful. Please watch
The Dance Tour was unbelievable. Wish you would listen to Tusk from this concert. It actually included a marching band! You'd have to see it to believe it.
I wish I could have seen Fleetwood Mac. Never had the chance.....Love Stevie Nicks. The way she moved, interacted with the band...and her voice! These days, if I hear auto tune, I change the station! By the way...have you ever listened to Stevie Ray Vaughn? You want a Blues Guitar Master? Look for Stevie Ray Vaughn Voodoo Child Live in Nashville. It's his rendition of Jimi Hendricks song..... His is a sad story too. I got to see him live where I live just before he got really big. Watch his guitar work.....
You asked why I love Fleetwood Mac. You have to start at the beginning. Peter Green breaking from John Mayall Blues Breakers taking Mic Fleetwood, John MacVie, Jeremy Spencer. You have to listen the best blues guitarist ever. The man who wrote on a wall "Clapton is God". RIP Peter Green. Listen to Albatross, Dust MY Broom, Black Magic Women, Manfred the World . I have no money to donate but I would give my eye tooth to hear your reactions to any of Fleetwood Mac's earlier blues classics.
Fleetwood Mac was the second concert I attended, It was in 1977 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas Tx. The opening act was Steve Miller and Joe Welch. I've attended 23 concerts and this is still my favorite followed closely by Heart and Journey.👍
You must watch their 2013 Las Vegas live performance of Say Goodbye to see their raw emotions as they sing about their relationship. Stevie breaks down at one point, briefly unable to sing and Lindsey picks it up for her.
This is Fleetwood Mac gen 2. The original was founded by guitarist Peter Green who didn’t want the band named after himself so he used drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie. Peter fried his brain with lsd and did not play for the next 20 year. Fleetwood Mac want Lindsey Buckingham but he was only available if his girlfriend Stevie Nicks was included. The album Rumours spawned this song. These guys whole Rumours album was song that were aim viciously towards each other’s romantic relationships and was recorded under huge alcohol and drug use. A stunning album with great songs.
Silver Springs is THE song where Stevie sings it and Lindsay takes it. When Bob Welch left, Mick and John liked Lindsay's guitar playing and offered him the spot. Lindsay and Stevie were already a couple. He said "If I join then Stevie comes with me we're a package". But all kinds of things started happening. Silver Springs was supposed to be on Rumors but Lindsay's song " Go You Own Way" made it and Stevie's Silver Spring was not. The dynamic of their performance is incredible.
I believe the song encompasses the idea that no matter how personal relationships may fail, “The Chain/the Group” must remain strong…hence “never break the chain.”
Since you can't see us I'm a 71yr old white lady in Louisiana exiting on ss in an 10×12 room, just you and listening to good music. Don't know about no Pumkins- I'll learn with ya. Glad you started over
this dance concert is onDVD, I actually still have it on VHS, that's how old I am lol. But the entire concert is fire...Silver Springs, I am so Afraid, all of them
EVERYTHING from this performance is Amazing!! you’ve also gotta react to NEVER GOING BACK AGAIN ideally a live performance. Lindsey’s guitar work will blow you away
There is nothing NOT to love about Fleetwood Mac! When I started collecting vinyl a few years ago, this is the first album I bought. LOVE IT! It is by far their best album! Thanks for sharing your reaction to "The Chain" and for your personal insights.
If you want to see them perform arguably their best song while giving each other absolute death stares, check out Silver Springs from that same concert.
The Chain is about the 5 members of the band. No matter what they’re going through personally, their band will always be together. Lindsay and Stevie, John and Christine McVee broke up and Mick Fleetwood had gone through a divorce all about the same time when they made the album Rumors.
Been a big fan of Fleetwood from their first iteration of Peter Green's Blues to the more "adult contemporary' of Bob Welch and of course the beauty of Buckingham Nicks no matter my mood there is something from Fleetwood Mac that reaches my soul.
This is 20 years later. Its safe to say that Stevie and the remarried Lindsay had a whole lot of distance from the original emotions that created this song This is just performance as is Silver Springs
Lindsay was over it, think Stevie has remained a bitch to him. She has never failed to take shots at him. She would be nobody without him. They wanted him in the band, he insisted they were a package deal. So they took her despite not needing or wanting another female. Stevie has proven herself on her own, but she owes her big shot to Lindsay.
I agree that it's just performance! GOOD performance....but I've seen this incarnation of FM on five different tours...and get the 'routine'! But the audience EATS IT UP!!! Every show was masterful! Great live band....too bad it's over.
@@davidschmidbauer3930 George Harrison was that way with Paul. Paul would speak lovingly of George and every so often, George would revert back to dragging him in the press Some people are just petulant and petty

Absolutely!!!!! 😱😱😱
Totally agree
Yes, don't miss that performance; it's incredible!
IMHO, one of the greatest performances of a Pop-Rock band. A masterpiece!
Lindsey Buckingham doesn’t get enough credit for being an extremely creative guitar player.
Yes he does.
Im So Afraid is amazing in the Dance concert.
He was also primarily responsible for the brilliant sprawling mess that is "Tusk", my favourite Mac album.
IKR, and he kept getting snubbed on What Up With That?, poor guy.
He's one of my icons of guitar that I discovered after trying to pick up fingerpicking on electric guitar.

The eye contact is incredible and at times give you chills. And the song is absolutely beautiful. Please watch
You need to watch them perform Rhiannon 1976 live performance. Stevie Nicks is possessed
My older sister came home with the rumours LP and i have been listening ever since
Good Morning! Thank you for the video, so soothing with a great cup of coffee.
Definitely watch Silver Springs. Stevie said that she wanted Lindsey to look her in the eyes. U can feel the emotions! Beautiful song
It's not the guitar, it's the player.
The song you want to watch for the interaction between Stevie and Lindsey is “Silver Spring” from that same concert. Holy shit, it’s electric!
"Big Love" from this same concert, you'll love the guitar!
One of the best live performances I’ve ever seen!
The high harmony is Christine. The guitars Buckingham played were usually Rick Turner guitars, I believe.
Saw them live during the Tusk tour. What I think sets them apart is. They sound just as good live as they do recorded.
Just my opinion~~~~
Wait until you learn about "Never Going Back Again". Possibly the greatest finger picking song ever.
Absolutely!
I loved the 'recent' live Lindsey/Stevie duet of "Never Going Back Again" taken from Buckingham Soundstage Show.
Fleetwood Mac, just another fantastic band from a fantastic era of music.
Someone once said listening to this record was like watching mom and dad break up. I felt that 😂😂
My introduction to Fleetwood Mac, was in the early years with Peter Green, back then, they were an amazing blues band
You should see Lindsey performing Big Love from the same show, and then the whole band doing Silver Springs... so much emotion.
Glad you started over
If you want to see the real tension between them, have a look at "Silver Spring" live. The same show.
Count my blessings I grew up with Fleetwood Mac. Going to parties at 16 yo hearing Rumors blasting through the beer soaked house. Those were the days.
this dance concert is onDVD, I actually still have it on VHS, that's how old I am lol. But the entire concert is fire...Silver Springs, I am so Afraid, all of them
EVERYTHING from this performance is Amazing!! you’ve also gotta react to NEVER GOING BACK AGAIN ideally a live performance. Lindsey’s guitar work will blow you away
I sing Landslide to my three kids who are now adults/ I seen FleetWood Mac in concert hands down best concert ever
Fleetwood Mac is one of the greatest bands ever!!!!!!!!❤
There is nothing NOT to love about Fleetwood Mac! When I started collecting vinyl a few years ago, this is the first album I bought. LOVE IT! It is by far their best album! Thanks for sharing your reaction to "The Chain" and for your personal insights.
If you want to see them perform arguably their best song while giving each other absolute death stares, check out Silver Springs from that same concert.
"Silver Springs" and then years later "Say goodbye' to get the whole relationship arc.
Stevie was so good. Hugs to you. 60 today😢
If looks could kill watch Silver Springs live incredible and kinda funny!
You need to react to Silver Spring from The Dance and Rhiannon from the Midnight Special.
The original demo of The Chain by Stevie was amazing.
Its safe to say that Stevie and the remarried Lindsay had a whole lot of distance from the original emotions that created this song
This is just performance as is Silver Springs
Lindsay was over it, think Stevie has remained a bitch to him. She has never failed to take shots at him. She would be nobody without him. They wanted him in the band, he insisted they were a package deal. So they took her despite not needing or wanting another female. Stevie has proven herself on her own, but she owes her big shot to Lindsay.
I agree that it's just performance! GOOD performance....but I've seen this incarnation of FM on five different tours...and get the 'routine'! But the audience EATS IT UP!!!
Every show was masterful! Great live band....too bad it's over.
@ fantastic performance really
@@davidschmidbauer3930 George Harrison was that way with Paul. Paul would speak lovingly of George and every so often, George would revert back to dragging him in the press
Some people are just petulant and petty
This band was what I grew up listening to, Please do Silver Spring's , awesome and I think one of their best .
2:19 That's why I love Fleetwood Mac The harmonies are outstanding.
Silver Springs from this show is the one you really need to watch! It is so Intense!
