-Napoleon rose to power thanks to and because the people both needed him and wanted him,the revolution kicked off a hate towards France and even without him they would face coalitions.
-There are no crimes or arbitrary actions of Napoleon neither was he powerhungry, the coalitions attacked because of fear and jeaolousy.
-He spread the ideas so many nations today that claim to be "democratic" cherish like liberalism,right of self-determinations,etc.
-He lead his own campaign and was competent on many fields,people even flocked to him after he was deposed.
Even Hitler might not have been so evil,despite beign dictator he had underlings that had quite alot of autonomy + english propaganda. Dont believe everything you hear/read especially of mainstream origin.

1793 is one of my favourite years in history - the threat of invading armies from all the great neighbouring powers and France facing imminent invasion and total defeat; entire regions in revolt and a nation in turmoil. Meanwhile, at the centre of the storm, some of the most legendary, titanic political and ideological struggles are taking place within Paris itself, wrestling for France's very soul. The fact that France emerged from this at all is amazing; the fact that Napoleon would rise during this era and make France the preeminent power in Europe for over a decade is quite simply incredible.

Same thing happened over and over in French history. On the brink of utter anihilation, some hero (or heroin) rises above the rank and file through sheer self belief: Joan of Arc, Napoleon, Charles de Gaulle being the best known, but there are others, less known outside of France. King Louis XI being a prime example of sheer self belief altering the course of history.

Unbelievable amount of energy and entrepreneurship in this fellow, Napoleon. Someone else would've taken the situation and tried to do his best with what was given to him, but Napoleon immediately started organizing mass transportation of guns and trainings to better his odds, and he was just the artillery officer! I don't think people really appreciate how extraordinary and out of the box such effort is without truly being able to put themselves in a situation like that. Men like that, who you can trust to get the job done no matter what, who can pull water out of rocks, are truly extraordinary.

He was such inspiring figure for his soldiers. Nothing to do with the generals of the coalition who were aristocrats with no battle experience. In Toulon, he was leading his troops, in Arcole he was in first line, bearing the flag under enemy fire, at the battle of Jena, despite being nothing less than the Emperor of Europe, he was helping his soldiers pulling the canons to the top of the plateau and sleeping next to them the day before the battle instead of staying in his tent. A true inspiring leader.
Actually lots of the aristocracy had military experience and military offices were highly sought after.
The fact this comment has so many upvotes shows how historically illiterate most armchair historians are. Revolutionary era and Napoleonic era officers weren't WW1 generals, they couldn't lead from behind and in fact were expected to literally lead from the front ranks to show off their bravery. Even generals had to dodge cannon balls and got involved in the fighting with their men. That's why there's so many paintings of famous officers dying in the mud. Napoleon was no different in this regard from any other aristocratic officer at the time.

The wars he didn't explicitly start were almost all a result of France venturing out of its traditional boundaries and seeking to control people who did not want to be ruled by them and who were ethnically distinct. Making Germany and Italy French puppets. Annexing Belgium and the Netherlands. Rearranging the entire map of Europe according to his whims.
Napoleon is one of the biggest warmongerers in history. If the holocaust hadn't happened I'd compare him to Hitler. Or say Timur or Genghis.
Also "only" the invasion of Russia? He led half a million men to their deaths and killed even more Russian soldiers and civilians. All for nothing because his plan was doomed from the start.

The Brits effed up by not anchoring a few ships of the line closer to shore to bombard the French as they tried to position heavy guns.
fun fact: future marshals Massena , Suchet , Victor , Marmont and Brune along with Generals Junot and Duroc all fought at Toulon along Napoleon, at the beginning, none knew each other .
Lol the more I learn about Suchet the more I realize dude was at like every major moment of the revolution. Fights under Napoleon in northern Italy as well.

Epic History TV you really have to fill the gap between Toulon and Austerlitz : the political situation from the Terror in 1793 to the Consulate in 1799, the first campaign in Italy, the campaign of Egypt, the second campaign in Italy and all the reforms Napoleon have done during the Consulate. It worths it!

I would love to see additional treatment of the much-overshadowed and understudied French Revolutionary Wars. Thanks for all that you do to bring history to life!!

To be fair, he allowed his soldiers to loot and some gained massive amounts of wealth, especially from Egyptian Mamluks. The Mamluks fought with all of their treasure earned over a lifetime attached to their bodies and horses. From the eyes of a French soldier, it was like repeatedly winning the lottery.

He studied a lot Roman History when he was in school(and had a fondess for Caeser if I remember correctly) and was the closest thing to a Roman General/Emperor in the modern age
"One cannot remain 3 minutes without gunpowder." Wow, this is remarkably similar to something I heard on the history channel show Shootout when I was a kid. It stuck with me all these years. I believe it was a US Marine that was being interviewed about his experience fighting the Japanese in the Pacific. He said something to the effect of "You can go 3 weeks without food and 3 days without water. But you can't last 3 minutes without ammunition." I suppose great minds think alike.

also little story, the first doctor who checked napoleon's leg wound said it needed to be removed(the leg), lucky napoleon a more experienced doctor showed up before that and stopped it from happening.

meaturama Yeah, but part of what makes him so endearing to the men (so much so that they are willing to die for him) is how he often leads at the frontlines and got heavily involved with the soldiers. While I knew a one1legged Napoleon would find no excuse to not be with his troops, I doubt he can do much amongst his men at the frontlines with just a leg.

This is has got to be my favorite TH-cam channel hands down. The series on Alexander the Great was a masterpiece, and now covering Napoleon too! What a treat. I agree so much. Military Historians throughout the world should watch this no matter what they are interested in. Rome? Watch the Belisarius series. Greece? Alexander. Middle ages? 1st Crusade. Napoleonic? This series. Modern? WWI
Napoleon bayoneted in his first major battle, Alexander took a sword to the head at the battle of the granicus but his helmet saved him, Caesar was lucky on multiple occasions, Hitler was shot in the arm during the Beer hall putsch. Such a fine line, all survived but a few inches different and the course of history changes completely.

Famous leaders who did fall in battle include Gustavus Adolphus king of Sweden, Richard III of England, Charles XII of Sweden (kind of), Constantine last emperor of Byzantium (eastern rome) James Wolfe, Horatio Nelson and I really can’t think of many more who would be considered that famous

And if you compare Napoleon and Hitlers early life and rise to power a lot of it is so eerily simlar. They had very similar lives, to a certain point at least.

This is OUTSTANDING. The excellent maps and movements showed clearly for the first time that event. Far superior to any book seen, let alone videos. Bravo.
This was the first battle in which Napoleon encountered Sir Sidney Smith, the man who burned most of the French fleet, and who Napoleon himself regarded later as "The man who made me miss my destiny".

Napoleon probably disliked and at the same time admired the British most of all his enemies due to them being his most steadfast adversary. People always say Boneparte lost his empire in Spain (1808-1813) and Russia (1812). But in the end, the 'Whale' crushed the 'Elephant.'
1. Britain funded the coalitions against France from 1792-1815.
2. Sidney Smith partially burning the French fleet in Toulon (1793), escaping French jail in 1797 and causing Napoleon to miss his 'destiny' in Syria, (Arce) in 1799.
3. Admiral Nelson destroying the Napoleon's fleet at Battle of Aboukir Bay (1798) stranding the French army in Egypt.
4. Nelson destroying the French and Spanish fleet at Cape Trafalgar in 1805, saving and protecting Britain from French invasion.
5. Finally, Arthur Wellesley (Duke of Wellington) with Dutch, German, and Prussian help to defeat Napoleon's forces at Waterloo (1815).
Yet at the end in 1815, Napoleon wisely realised that the British would be the nation and people who would most likely treat him the most humanely. Despite his exile on St. Helena I believe the British establishment and military grudgingly admired Napoleon and his achievements.
Just watching this before "Napoleon in Italy: The Little Corporal" airs in half hour (18:00 GMT).

Bonaparte was not only a brilliant tactician but a career soldier. Some of the best soldiering I have seen has been from those with non-combat experience; engaging without the prejudices of defeat, casualties, and the cynicism that generally comes with combat experience.

The British were only good to pull out by the sea while their allies were doing most of the fighting (the main British strategy in every war: run to their boots and blame allies when things turn bad, then come back at the end to attack in the back when their allies are close to victory and then claim all the credit). Even in the Iberian Peninsula only (the only place were Brits were not totally irrelevant), the large majority of the French died against Spanish armies or guerilla... not against little Englanders... "GREATEST" enemy MY ASS.

I’m not French but the Revolution, and Napoleonic Wars And Age were to me the most fascinating period in French history. Such a bloody revolution, the advent of democratic institutions put the fear of God into Absolute Monarchs. The people were fervently tired of the BS of absolutism and divine right. Napoleon’s rise to power was such an interesting point in history, and the fear the neighboring empires felt for this revolution and this non-aristocratic military genius’ empowerment were a further step into the rise of republics throughout the Western world. What a time to observe.

What are you talking about? Napoleon did not destroy monarchs, he created them, from his family. He made himself an Emperor. The only country without a monarch was the US. And only because George Washington turned down the title. Monarchies did not end until after WW1.

Vequio Ourax The Netherlands was not a kingdom until 1806. It had a sort of Royal Family but they were “stadhouders” sort of gouverneurs that lead the army. Only the last 50 years 1748-1795 they had almost absolute power. Before that period they had only much power in times of war.

I appreciate the mention of Charles O'Hara: the distinction of having surrendered to Washington and Napoleon. Afterwards, O'Hara was taken to Paris where he spent the next couple years in Prison. One of the inmates was Charles Paine.

While he certainly wasn’t evil he wasn’t GOOD either. His conquests killed millions and changed Europe forever. Like most great men, he is definitely grey.
Lambert2191 even Napoleon was being label as evil man, at least he has some achievements to compensate it.. And that is something that the Europe failed to achive it.
