    I love the first line of this song. I love this song. I was suggesting these guys to you just a few minutes ago, but you been here already. 🤘 And yes, he's angry and hurt about what happened to his mom, and she was so trusting that 'God' would heal her. One of my favorite songs of all time. It’s one of those that hits you right when you need it in life. If you haven’t checked out Tool’s Wings For Marie (Pt. 1) and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) yet, that should be next. They’re about his mother and very moving as well 🖤
    Happy New Year!!

    • @ambiophonic
      @ambiophonic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I totally agree. I was going to suggest this as the next track, both 1 and 2.
      While both songs are about his mother, Judith was driven by anger and Wings for Marie seems like it was driven by sadness.

    the way i think about it, Tool is the "Left Brain" Math Band, and APC is the "Right Brain" Emotional Band.
    Billy Howerdel is the other mastermind of APC, he was a guitar tech for a bunch of bands like Faith No More and Nine Inch Nails, worked with Tool for their Aenima tour, showed Maynard his music, and Maynard said if he ever formed a band he would sing for them. he plays the guitar and bass parts for most of this album.

      @@poloreacts27 Hi. I’ve liked Tool ever since Undertow came out in the very early 90s. In my estimation your analysis of the lyrics is spot on. You clearly did your due diligence. It’s easy to see this song as a rebuke of Christianity, however the focus of his anger seems to be directed solely at the church his mother attended hence the lyric “ F your Christ” as opposed to “F Christ”. I think it was intentional with Maynard perhaps knowing if he attacked the whole religion it would weaken the impact of the song. This is of course my opinion. Try Eulogy if you do any more Tool reacts. Happy new year & good luck with the channel.

    I remember when the video hit - a roommate yelled "I think tool has a new song," and we all ran to the TV, confused by what was going on. Loved this release, and their second one is a beautiful effort, too. I've always thought of APC as a "radio-friendly Tool," with shorter songs that are more "listener-friendly."

    One of the few that I'd suggest watching the official video of this song as a first listen. Not distracting at all like so many TOOL songs, but very engaging.

    This is my FAVE band of ALL time!!!! Thank you for reacting to it!!!!!!! He is asking his mom something, but the anger is directed at the church. He wondered why she would keep her faith with her condition and from the treatment she got from her own church peers.

    Speaking as an atheist and speaking for most that I know. We don't put any energy in not believing. The energy we put in is to counteract the main religion (at least in America) Christianity forcing the beliefs upon everyone politically and in school systems. In this song, it's Maynard voicing his disagreement with his mother who kept her strong faith in the Christian God after her stroke that left her paralyzed. By the way, he loves/d more than anyone/thing. The Tool album 10,000 Days has a lot to do with her.

    I am a Christian and I enjoy this song. It is the “problem of suffering/pain”, a philosophical objection to the existence of God set to music. For him, this objection comes from a deeply personal place, understandably. However, he has multiple songs that touch on this piece of his personal life. Check out Tool Wings for Marie/10,000 days (2 tracks which must be listened to together). Powerful stuff.

    • @lisasalcedo8508
      @lisasalcedo8508 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. On one hand, it hurts my heart to know that he holds this pain towards God and then at the same time, I completely understand how he can feel the way he does. Sometimes things happen that we cannot explain and don’t seem fair and when someone is trying to line that up with a “loving” God and it’s not working, this song captures that.

      Your god is just your feelings. Santa doesn't really eat your cookies and leave you presents. This is a great song but I always have to laugh at Maynard's 'spiritual' lyrics. After listening to Tool for over 30 years , just like Christianity, I roll my eyes. May logic be your guide.

    • @lisasalcedo8508
      @lisasalcedo8508 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Mr. Peabody, you are entitled to your opinion about whether God exists or not, but why do you insist on being degrading and insulting? Such comments aren’t going to change the opinion of one who believes in God. Does it make you feel better? Do you feel superior? Is it some kind of flex? I find it childish and immature personally, but perhaps you just lose control and can’t help yourself. Sad.

      I actually think that the growth in the way he approaches the subject of Judith’s relationship to God from this song to Wings/10,000 Days is remarkable. This is anger, perhaps misdirected. The latter still express anger, but more focused on religion as implemented by people as opposed to religion as a distinct thing. There is no argument that his views of God in the latter are still surrounded by doubt and the difficulty that faith brings, but he is nevertheless able to say “OK I may not have what you’re looking for, God, but if anyone ever did, it was my mother, and her faith has moved me such that I believe her to be the most pious person ever.” In the latter songs it is “f the fakers” at the same time as “if you don’t see what she truly was then f you too God.”
      Challenging God may not be wise, but it certainly adds an element of intense understanding to the way in which he viewed his mother as he matured…. Kind of saying “I’m OK with setting myself up negatively in your eyes if it does something that helps others understand what true faith is”
