The Ideal Sequel | Dead Space 2 Review

  • Dead Space 2 is the perfect example of a sequel iterating on its predecessor.
Released in early 2011, Dead Space 2 is a wonderful follow-up to Dead Space, and overall, I feel is the better title. While it received a much larger budget and was more action-focused, Dead Space 2 doesn't lose the atmosphere, immersion, and heart of the original.

Dead Space 2 follows the blueprint that was laid down by the original Dead Space, fixes most of its flaws, and expands on the framework of its predecessor. This was my first time playing Dead Space 2 - and overall I feel it's better than the original. Dead Space 2 is one of the best games to have been released in 2011 - a year that saw many incredible releases.
The stakes are higher, the plot is more personal, and it's bigger and more bombastic, but it doesn't lose the heart and soul of what Dead Space is. Dead Space 2 still gets plenty of scares and atmosphere to throw your way, even with a heavier action focus.
This Dead Space 2 review/analysis/retrospective/critique will look at the improvements Dead Space 2 made, the voicing of Isaac Clarke, the plot of Dead Space 2, and some thoughts on the rumored Dead Space remake.
Edit: Yep the Dead Space remake is happening.

To me, what solidified my love for Isaac Clarke’s character as well as respect for his voice actor was the delivery of just one line in the game. It’s during a scene where Nicole’s Apparition appears once again, and Isaac sees her, bows his head and starts shaking it, pacing around in place with a clearly chaotic mix of feelings stirring inside him. He simply mutters, “No…”, then after a brief pause, Isaac suddenly BELLOWS out, “YOU’RE NOT NICOLE!” jabbing his weapon at her with each furious syllable he screams out. What gets me about the delivery of that line is that you can FEEL a THOUSAND different emotions that are bursting out of Isaac regardless if he intends to or not, and that alone speaks VOLUMES about how emotionally and mentally exhausted he is by everything he’s been through. It’s just one little moment and one simple line, but it’s the delivery of this line by the VA that has stuck with me for all these years.

Dead space 2 is basically the perfect sequel they built everything from the first game and even somehow to making it much more polish than the last game. Story wise it balance to old players and to new ones and probably one of dead space most noticeable is how all game are somewhat grounded enough to make me believe it could be possible even with all the horrific necromorphe even in the third one.
The game story is also really good, besides bioshock, it was able to make me immersive with the world. The lore behind it works well, in both dead space we see the rapid decay of the space station and the ishmoria with the necromorphe rapidly consuming the whole place. Some messages and recordings has some really depressing stories. Especially the school level where few horror game touch on children how they were effective sure the first one did it but they were baby's actual children is another thing seeing an actual school being turned into a children's necromorphe playground is really depressing and shows how the markers effects everyone.
Unitology is something i didn't think they would explore which im glad they did. It feels like an actual cult though i wish they went in more i depth. And i may get some hate but 3 wasn't that bad i thought it was a good send off if you don't count the dlc which ruins everything the ending in three actually gave. Over all i thought the dead space had a good trilogy with the last game sort of being the nail in the coffin with the focus to action sort of basically being every horror franchise Achilles heel where the publisher wanted to have unrealistic sales that made them want to change it to appeal to a broader audience which never ends well.

with the character's name coming from two famous sci-fi authors, I thought the implication was meant to be that Isaac (Asimov, Arthur C.) Clarke was more of a pensive type. also the fact that you, the player, aren't privy to his thought process or emotions, aside from the raw anger he displays whenever melee-ing or stomping. as much as I love Dead Space 2, it is my opinion that Isaac became a bit too quippy. not MCU level, but still. it doesn't feel like the same character.

Dead Space 2 has one of the best endings a game could have. First you have to deal with that eye poking machine (which is the most scary thing in the entire series), then you have to hack a door when a indestructable monster is coming towards you. Then you need to run from it while being rushed by other necromorphs and everything explodes. Then some random guy shoots you with a crossbow (at my first try he killed me, becouse I didnt know wth is going on anymore and didnt notice the QTE promps). Then you get a boss fight INSIDE YOUR HEAD. AND THEN you escape after fake credits with a FREAKING JET PACK!
Now THAT is how you end a game :D

I personally *vibe* with Dead Space 1 more, I think it's Art Direction is more inspired and sells a better atmosphere HOWEVER, removing my nostalgia goggles, Dead Space 2 is the far more replayable title that truly nailed the visceral combat(pun not intended) and has some really fun moments and *far* better enemy variety. I think the most apt comparison is definitely Alien to Aliens. Both great, albeit for different reasons. It's a great thing that the series ended here with giving Isaac a happy ending and having him ride off with his new space gf.
This is a MASSIVE nitpick but am I the only one who doesn't like the new Health Meter in 2? instead of an even 4-8 health pips giving an even, easily readable indicator of your health(25 HP a pip) you know have this weird 6-12 that's not only split in a weird direction version simple squares, now has you needing to divide certain bars by 2(the 2nd health upgrade giving you 2 health pips worth 12.5hp each.) making it more difficult to read your HP on the fly in the far more numerous, deadly encounters. I'm personally not a fan of the more "slick" style that 2 has, but it's not terrible looking by any means.

    • @norwegianboyee
      @norwegianboyee 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah it's hard to read the health meter in '2. It looks cool, but it's less practical for gameplay reasons.
I'm going to be interested in the announced remake of 1. Will it be more like Dead space 2 but with the flair of Dead Space 1? Or something else entirely? I'm actually quite surprised as i'm not sure how they intend to remake what i already see as an perfect title, albeit with some flaws.

@@norwegianboyee Honestly, the Dead Space remake is my worst fears realized; With the success of REmake2 and REmake3(sold well despite sucking.) and with the (pointless) REmake4 all but official, I knew it was only a matter of time before EA got a smelly whiff of easy money and decide to necro a dead franchise. REmake 1-3 made sense because when the originals came out, the ideas were grander than the technology, this is no longer the case. Dead Space doesn't even need a remake let alone Resi4. Dead Space's only real faults were the lack of knesis and honestly pretty archaic design choices for combat encounters, literally all of which were fixed in 2(and the fact that it's just not scary.) but it's literally *fine*

I disagree about how Tideman was presented:
-> He wasn't to be viewed as a direct Antagonist to Isaac alone, but towards the whole idea of Extinction (also peace) vs. Survival (risky business with markers).
He's the one that defends the whole catastrophe as necessary, how Isaac's torture was necessary. There's also a mention of how this project is probably the governments only hope of any future progress / survivability for humanity.
I agree, that if you don't read every single data entry you come across (+ a few hidden ones I think?), this is not very clear, so could have been better presented for sure.
But at the end of the day, I just like how he actually has at least some-what of a redemptive motive and is not just another psycho/cartoon villain.

The first time i played it i wasn't much a fan of the very straight design of the levels but in the long run it's the game i play the most of the series. I completed all the modes/difficulties (loved the 3-4 saves one, you can split the challenge in 3-4 hours steps without the stress of having to redo a huge chunk) and even tried some stuff i usually don't do in games (like using melee as much as possible). The DLC stuff has the interesting idea of equipment focusing on specific skills, unfortunately it's not so significant to make a real different run.
Another cool thing i like is the bunch of resources hidden far from the view but that you can pick up with your kinetic powers, after few runs i started to noticed them more and more and it's quite satisfying to acquire all that stuff :P
It's one of the rare cases i bought the console versions too, about the story DLC you don't miss much (very reused assets) but there are some lore points that like the one for the third game i always found strange to put them in extra content.

I actually never had trouble with the stalkers once I got my strategy down.
Just reduce the number of possible directions for them to approach you from as low as you can, keep your eyes open and trigger finger itchy. They tend to charge you one at a time, and if you're ever hit by one charging it will just run back into hiding. That's basically how the initial encounter is set up, too, since if you keep your back to the door instead of running through their territory they can only approach you down the barrel of your gun.
Gets even easier with the Detonator, since you can block another direction of approach with a mine. Also good for an active approach letting you cover your own back with a mine, assuming you can keep a level head and don't panic and fall back into it.

    Here's my take:
The conlict in DS1 didn't warrant a voiced protagonist. It worked perfectly well because, as Issac is progressing closer to the truth, we are able to put ourselves in his grav boots.
With DS2, Issac getting closer to the Marker, and his struggle to let go of Nicole's memory, warrants him having a voice, and it helps develop him as he's able to move on from what happened on the Ishimura.

I just started Dead Space 2 at the start of the month for a horror game playthrough thing I do every Oct. At the start I didn't much like DS2...it felt like a imitation of Bioshock 2 to me... meaning the atmosphere and environments and as the game went on I started to enjoy it more especially the end. While I think 1 is still better you made me realize there is more to 2 than I had realized.

I've got to disagree about the stalkers. I thought they were a little disappointing as an enemy. In that first encounter i realised pretty quickly that you can make short work of them by just sitting in a corner and letting them funnel in towards you. Theyll only come at you one by one, they telegraph their charge really obviously and they run in a straight line towards you so theyre really easy to pick off. And its really obvious when theyre going to appear later in the game because of the way the rooms are laid out, so its very easy to prepare for them and find a good vantage point.
I felt dead space 2s leapers did everything the stalkers were meant to do but better. Theyre fast, they come in packs, will hit and run, but they can come at you all at once and from every angle, even from above. and their encounters and attacks feel a lot less scripted.

As much as I liked the first for it's atmosphere and more focus on horror, the second I feel just had a lot more to it. More character, variety in surroundings, giving Isaac dialogue (I personally never understood mute protagonists, found it immersion breaking in most games) better combat and more. If they do remake the trilogy, the first should still be focused on isolated, survival horror and the second more expanded in terms of locations. Like that club you can't go in, imagine that with thumping music and lights rapidly going on and off. As for three, well, a tough one. Do you still make it co OP or solo? Regardless of what they pick, less cover shooter would be better.

Being on a PS5 we can only play Dead Space 3 through PSNOW which is a joke. I recently found a Xbox Series S and got Gamepass right away and BAM! All 3 Dead Space games! I never played the DLC for any of the Dead Space games. I'm excited for the "remake" but I wish it was a new installment. To me it says "no one can make a game better than 1 or 2" oh well. Dead Space 2 perfected the weapons balance -every single weapon can be used effectively if you upgrade it properly, especially in Hard mode where ammo is scarce and a weapon like the Ripper or Flamethrower that is ammo-efficient gains a whole new value. The game is great and even better than DS1 because of this. That new enemy type that screams and charges at you like a dog was a brilliant and tense addition

24:12See, I'm happy they went the remake way rather than the remaster BECAUSE these games still look phenomenal and have great gameplay.
What DIDN'T work in the original trilogy was the story, though to be fair the fault falls almost entirely on DS3. What captivated me of DS and DS2 was the grounded nature of the protagonists, basically average working joes who used their wits to stay alive. It's what made Ellen Ripley such a likeable character. Isaac gets fatigued, hurt, scared, just like a normal person would. Hell, there's literal compilations on TH-cam of all the ways he can be brutally killed.
Even the antagonists were believable: the Markers didn't appear out of thin air - man's greed and extremism were responsible for them.
DS3 dialed the cosmic horror aspect all the way to 11 which just made the entire thing feel ridiculously over the top and laughable, with Isaac being pitted against literal killer moons.
Making this a remake allows the developers to take liberties with the original trilogy, and from what we've seen it seems that they're set on keeping what worked, improving what wasn't perfect, and changing what didn't work, which is exactly what this remake needs to do (provided that they get to keep going after the first remake and that EA miraculously doesn't interfere)

Interesting how you also saw a decline in quality as the game went on, however for me it was more of just the horror aspect that fell off than total quality. Our biggest disagreement is on the zero G, I thought DS1's were cool but DS2's were epic. The puzzles took advantage of the 3D space enough that it felt like the power to fly was really useful. The other disagreement is that I found telekinesis way too OP, although the combat that came about from that was original and fun to play out. Stasis was also OP but you had to sort of spec into it to make it so, and I basically went down other routes instead to keep gameplay more exciting. And regarding Isaac's legendary lines, Ill never forget the way he says "Holy shit"... I think it was as the tram collapses... idek. xD But it was like "Hollee shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!!" lol Or the guy in the beginning that goes "It's red.... Your rig is red." and "WIILL IT MATTEERRRRR" lol great video
