The fact that you can talk about an MCU movie for over 20 minutes and not give any spoilers away blows my mind. The vast majority of people couldn’t talk about a movie like that whatsoever.
Not complaining but there are definitely what I would class as minor spoilers in this review. Sean discusses the tone of the movie, the scale of the movie etc and he breaks down the character of the villain in quite specific detail and how he is portrayed. Even explaining that Kang kills dozens/hundreds of people in certain scenes and then it immediately cuts to jokes in the next scene. Although these aren't spoiling big specific plot points it definitely gives people are pre determined expectation before seeing the film versus going in blind. That to me counts as minor spoilers.

Marvel Studios: cutting tension since 2008. They could take notes from a lot of horror movies. Put all the jokes you want in the first act, or even until the halfway point. By that point the story should be getting more serious and should be treated as such.
Pretty excited for this one, I just want a movie that doesn’t rely too much on comedy, I know it’s an ant man movie, but being the first film of a fase I expect them to give the attention and detail it deserves. And as always, excited to hear your thought
I thought this movie was okay. I had fun with it, but I thought it could have been much better. Jonathan Majors was definitely a legend, I can’t wait to see what he does next. The Wasp was barely used and that was weird to me. She only had like 5 lines, and Katheryn Newton as Cassie was very basic. I thought they should have chosen a better performer. Otherwise, I liked this. I just want more Kang 😂😂😂 Amazing review!
The movie is a mixed bag for me and awesome review Sean! I liked the personal moments between Lang and Hope's family and the fight at the end was cool and you definitely feel the danger from Kang, but the epic, big scope to the film was hit and miss for me at times, however I had a good time overall not the worst movie in the MCU in my opinion.
M.O.D.O.K. is SUPPOSED to be inherently unnatural. He looks goofy at first glance but if you get on his bad side he's a relentless killing machine. I'm so glad they embraced the source material instead of being ashamed by it and giving him a more generic look like the one in Marvel's Avengers. Also, in a universe were a man made one of the most advanced AIs of all time with pre-2010s technology and someone else became Sorcerer Supreme in like a year, is it really that weird to have Cassie be a genius? Superheroes are all about power fantasy, for starters. It's almost like the comic book world is full of super-gifted minds... Secondly, we've never spent much time with her character, so we really couldn't have ever known, and there WAS a 5-year gap. Scott’s an expert engineer, so high-level intellect may run in her genes. Not tying that to the rest of the movie is a problem, but the fact that she's smart by itself isn't.
I honestly thought it was a solid film. I think it had minor tonal problems but not enough to rattle my enjoyment of the film. Phase 5 is off to a good start!
Sean, I'm curious about the "uncomfortable" effect you said M.O.D.O.K. gave you since he's one of the things I'm most excited to see. What with him being an extremely deformed human, do you think that effect was intentional at all? Or is the issue more just that he feels out-of-place?
It was DEFINITELY intentional, you will know once you know M.O.D.O.K.’s story. And it isn’t the worst mcu villain story I have heard. It was a 7 on the story scale ranging from Maleikith (Don’t even care to get his name right) to Thanos level (Won’t forgot that name after someone yelled Iron Man dies after End Game came out in front of a whole high school)
I watched it last night and I pretty much agree with your assessment. The Kang stuff worked really well for me but as an Ant-Man movie this didn’t really have any time to develop those characters or give them any arcs. I think they’re getting better at dialing back the humor with these last two MCU films but it’s also Ant-Man and I’m wondering if maybe he wasn’t the best pick to introduce the main villain. I think had this movie been a bit longer to flesh out their characters more and had the humor all front loaded and the movie got progressively more serious this could’ve worked better. I enjoyed the film it just leaves a really odd feeling for me.
If Kang and MODOK aren't a tonal shift, then what is? The movie literally goes from Kang slaughtering people to MODOK is an idiot jokes. THat's a pretty jarring jump. Is it supposed to be intense and dangerous or silly?
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout I’m not saying that it’s not a tonal shift. Of course MODOK looks ridiculous and then there’s murderous Kang the Conqueror. I just don’t think it’s as bad as many say, I thought it worked fine.
The backstory of Janet knowing Kang was the key to this whole picture working. This was an import-ANT return to good form for the MCU for me...better than both Dr. Strange 2 and Thor 4.
Honestly, your continual use of puns is what pushed me over the edge to hit "Like" on this video. When watching TH-cam on the reg you forget to hit Like when watching, but the puns were so great that it reminded me and made sure to give you a thumbs up. Tremendous, fella. Tremendous. I'm heavily ANTicipating your next video now.
I think they released this movie at the beginning of phase 5 as opposed to later on is to regain the trust of the public that they have a plan. The guy playing slang is the best casting in the MCU besides Tom Hiddleston, and that’s saying a LOT considering the actors in the MCU.
Have not seen it yet. Will be soon. But from how you described what they did with Cassie, simply based on how you talked about it. To me makes me think like we too missed out on the time Scott did with his daughter. Like we are getting to know the current her just as he is. And the sense of morality. There were signs of that in the first couple ant-man movies that would suggest she had that at a young age. And knowing the hero her father was, thinking he was dead, it makes perfect sense that she would try to make sense of everything and even try to follow in his foot steps. Obviously only if she was smart enough to do so and it's very possible she's a genius in her own right. Again I'm only talking about how you spoke about her in this movie.
Thank you a lot for this review. I watched your video when it came out but waited until I saw the movie before giving my thoughts. Because of you I was able to enjoy the movie. You warned me of enough aspects of the movie that I anticipated the bad/mid and it didn't end up bothering me. Plus you warned me of the good aspects of the movie, that I really enjoyed. The biggest things is when it comes to Major's Kang performance. I understand now what you meant in this review. Again thank you, and cheers from France! 🍻
The really ambitious big event MCU films tend to have pretty mixed opinions but to me pretty much all of them have stuck the landing and Ant Man’s had a good run so I’m expecting the new one to be good too I’ve seen some reviews say they didn’t like the tonal departure from previous instalments and I think that’s a pretty silly criticism. I like when films change it up a bit and get a bit ambitious with the tone
Had flaws and odd choices especially with what they did with kang at the end but this is actually my favourite ant man film. Fantastic action, visuals. I love the amount of immense imaginative that went into the world building of the quantum realm. I love all the super creative and bizzare creatures and civilisation of the quantum realm. Kang and his performance was awesome!
I really liked this movie. This is my third second favorite since endgame. I just loved the world-building and the team dynamic. I do believe MODOK should have been just cut out of the movie. This could have been a top 5 MCU movie for me if it was twenty minutes longer and fixed the issues with the tone.
It’s sadly defeating to know yet another movie has the heroes cracking jokes alongside death and genocide looking like complete narcissists and then we got more requel/replacement characters with no development or reason immediately made superior in lazy writing just to have someone to fill a costume but with much less interesting or deep character, more post phase 3 double down on the formulas issues, hoping all future projects that are in progress move away from this but low expectations
Not expecting it to blow my mind, but honestly as long as i can have a better time with this compared to some of phase 4, like Black Widow, She Hulk, LaT (or even *gulp* Eternals) I'll be fairly pleasANT
Making Kang the main villain in this movie was the ground crumbling fault; it’s basically the equivalent of making Thanos the main villain in the first GotG. The main villain should’ve been either Modok (WITH BETTER EFFECTS) or, maybe as a twist villain, Bill Murray's character.
Just watched the movie 30 min ago and after hear the medium reviews I’ve heard about and therefore I put my expectations to a medium level and the movie net those. Neither good or bad just kind of in the middle but Jonathan Majors made the movie up a level to a 6/10
If this (unlike some of Phase 4) is a relevant piece of the MCU, I think we'll all have a good time... I just hope this isn't Thor: Love and Thunder, where the humour and tension don't match.
I’m hearing the same things over and over again. And it’s scaring me man. Heard kang the character was absolutely amazing and killed it. But the story is a mess and it’s another safe mcu film. Look is like Disneys laziness and lack of focus and attention to details is finally costing them. I’ve heard this is just as bad as eternals.
@@captainjakemerica4579 eternals was very bad and after see this it so was this movie just slightly better than the eternals 😂 just say you like bad movies and keeping moving.
I watched it last night. I thought it was good and there were some flaws. I felt like the third was trying to wrap up quickly. I thought MODOK shouldn't be in this movie and visually didn't look right at all.
All I can imagine is Patton Oswalt in live action in this movie. His face would've worked super well, he's already played the character, and he would've been able to balance the goofiness and the villainy of MODOK. Corey Stoll, on the other hand, is not only not funny in the way that MODOK should be, but he already played an MCU character, and a bad one at that. I don't know how they're going to handle him, as I haven't seen the movie, but I'm skeptical.
Seems like a trend for Phase 4/5 movies now: Started with Black Widow that mediocre Then comes Shang-Chi that people love Then comes Eternals that most people didn't like Then comes No Way Home that makes people love the MCU again Only to be disappointed again with Multiverse of Madness and Love and Thunder Then Wakanda Forever gives back the MCU that we love Only to be disappointed again by Quantumania Expecting people will love Guardians 3 again but shortly after that The Marvels possibly makes MCU disappointing again (i hope it's not)
I love this movie!!!!! I like how they introduced Kang and lead into other projects showing Kang like Loki, Secret Invasion, the Marvels and even Moon Knight. I love the end scene of the movie really tieing phase 5 together and the humor was emaculAnt. I wondered what that heart meant at the end scene on the wall, did anyone else see that? I kinda like the Star Wars feel thou in some of the new characters we see like that Kang is the emperor and MODOK is Darth Vader with hidden twists to them both. I wish we saw Luis in the beginning to lead into the Quantum Realm and want to see more on the Kang’s history because this movie confused me on that. Like did he get reborn from the one that remained, or was he always just there with other versions of himself that we locked away til he died and brought the rest back. The movie does feel like a Loki, Thor, Odin comedy that just combines the feel of serious and funny. I didn’t really hate the Mr. Eletric (SB&LG) MODIK head feel. It does feel like Loki and infinity war where it all could have been stopped by aiming for the head or not for Loki. I was hoping that dr.stranger’s end credit was going to combine with Ant man’s last scene, but it was a good feel of the villain. And I hope that Kang will appear in other MCU movies now that we have seen some of the other variAnt(s), overall got to be in the top 5 best mcu movies
Well i don't think that the movie is good Acting is bad Visuals are as bad as she hulks Story is really basic I didn't like the movie but Kang is for sure the best part of it

M.O.D.O.K. is SUPPOSED to be inherently unnatural.
Iron heart was a genius why not Cassie Lang? M.O.D.O.K. was good but wish he was more menusing at times
Thank you for actually addressing bill murray!!!!
Excellent review Sean...definitely looking forward to seeing this still (although some bits sound like Thor - love and thunder which is concerning)
I already knew about the holes thing because the BBFC mentioned it😂
I love the Ant puns....I cAN'T get enough of them. Please never stop them. 🤣 But I'm still highly ANTticipating this movie.
I do think everyone is over exaggerating the tonal shifts. I think it flows and is intense at the right times.
Seeing it tomorrow! A bit nervous bc of the mixed reviews but still excited
Dont be, just keep your expectations low and form your own opinion on the film! Dont let reviews put u off.
How the heck are you guys seeing this movie so early? It comes out on Friday and you are seeing it on Tuesday/Wednesday
Cassie explained that she had done a lot of work on her skills during the blip.
I love the amount of ant puns in this 😂
My only expectations is for MODAKS face to look like Mr.Electrics face because it would be funny
Can't wait to see it this FRIDAY!
I think they released this movie at the beginning of phase 5 as opposed to later on is to regain the trust of the public that they have a plan. The guy playing slang is the best casting in the MCU besides Tom Hiddleston, and that’s saying a LOT considering the actors in the MCU.
When you went full Modok, I was cracking up. Thanks for the review, always love the content you provide!
Hahaha 😂, that Zoolander reference had me chuckling for a good bit
The tiny tickets are amazing. And I appreciated the Zoolander reference. I’m hyped to see the film.
What people are saying about Kang makes me way more excited for this movie and I think he has the potential to become the best mcu villain
I love Andy’s take on the film at the end, if he starts a channel or already has one i’m subscribing!
I'm seeing alot of Mixed opinions about this Film, which oddly enough has Me More Excited to see it and form my own Opinion
The really ambitious big event MCU films tend to have pretty mixed opinions but to me pretty much all of them have stuck the landing and Ant Man’s had a good run so I’m expecting the new one to be good too
I’ve seen some reviews say they didn’t like the tonal departure from previous instalments and I think that’s a pretty silly criticism. I like when films change it up a bit and get a bit ambitious with the tone
It’s because critics are trying to kill comic book movies
Thanks so much for posting this Sean ur videos make my day
Not expecting it to blow my mind, but honestly as long as i can have a better time with this compared to some of phase 4, like Black Widow, She Hulk, LaT (or even *gulp* Eternals) I'll be fairly pleasANT
Honestly me 😂
Making Kang the main villain in this movie was the ground crumbling fault; it’s basically the equivalent of making Thanos the main villain in the first GotG. The main villain should’ve been either Modok (WITH BETTER EFFECTS) or, maybe as a twist villain, Bill Murray's character.
One of the best you tube reviewers by far
Just watched the movie 30 min ago and after hear the medium reviews I’ve heard about and therefore I put my expectations to a medium level and the movie net those. Neither good or bad just kind of in the middle but Jonathan Majors made the movie up a level to a 6/10
Flash Gordon was an AWESOME movie of my childhood! Thanks for the reminder - I'm checking it out. Let's see if the Nostalgia is justified. LOL!
The modok effect just reminds me of Mr. Electric from Shark Boy and lava girl
Lmao, same.
All the ant puns and you dropped the ball on Kang being a Vari-ant. Such an ant-iclimax, Sean Ch-ant-ler.
I'm sure it's going to go something like: "The greatest Marvel movie since the last Marvel movie."
Eternals wasn't bad nor is this movie
@@captainjakemerica4579 eternals was very bad and after see this it so was this movie just slightly better than the eternals 😂 just say you like bad movies and keeping moving.
Great review Sean!
The const(ant) ant puns broke me
Most reviews are pretty bad, and considering Ant-Man is among my least favorite Marvel properties. I'll wait for Disney Plus
I watched it last night. I thought it was good and there were some flaws. I felt like the third was trying to wrap up quickly. I thought MODOK shouldn't be in this movie and visually didn't look right at all.
Personally, I really liked this film. Very enjoyable and a great start to phase 5.
I have a game:
Take a shot every time Sean drops a Ant pun.
So, they followed Thor Ragnarok's tone of serious followed by jokes. But after Thor 4 pushing it too far now critics are tired of Ragnarok's tone.
Kang The Conquerer has arrived with a BANG!!
Don’t you mean, the com-ant section!
Ok between the ant puns and modok bit, this is the best review you’ve ever done. More dad jokes from our favorite TH-cam dad please!!!
So excited to see kang he’s my favorite marvel villain so im hoping it’s good
Seems like a trend for Phase 4/5 movies now:
Started with Black Widow that mediocre
Then comes Shang-Chi that people love
Then comes Eternals that most people didn't like
Then comes No Way Home that makes people love the MCU again
Only to be disappointed again with Multiverse of Madness and Love and Thunder
Then Wakanda Forever gives back the MCU that we love
Only to be disappointed again by Quantumania
Expecting people will love Guardians 3 again but shortly after that The Marvels possibly makes MCU disappointing again (i hope it's not)
Nah MCU Phase 4 and 5 haven't been like that
I love this movie!!!!!
We need an ANTi-pun movement.
Well i don't think that the movie is good
Acting is bad
Visuals are as bad as she hulks
Story is really basic
I didn't like the movie but Kang is for sure the best part of it
You should have had the TV in the background have an ant pun counter 😂
Great vid as always
Love the "dad" puns! 🤣
I just got out of this movie and all I have to say is go into with an open mind and don’t listen to the critics bc I loved it
Likely the most importANT review for the movie
