This is a classic dispute in old-school Hong Kong Kung fu movies. The movie marks the return of Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery, after his appearance in Iron Man 3 (2013) and the short Marvel One-Shot: All Hail the King (2014). In addition, it reveals his fate after the short, which ended in a cliffhanger.
I was really into it for the first two acts but the third act didn’t really work for me, i didn’t think it was able to successfully balance spectacle and important character beats. Nevertheless, I still consider it the best project of Phase 4 so far and would absolutely be down for a sequel by the same team.
There are so many positive reactions to this movie, and I am SOOOO hyped to see a fellow Asian leading a superhero film! Edit: amazing movie. Tony Leung is easily the standout here, as expected. Simu Liu does a fantastic job, and MengEr Zhang plays her complicated character in a way that allows the intricacies to shine through. Fala Chen and Michelle Yeoh bring that gravitas that grounds the film, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the Awkwafina stuff. I’m incredibly excited to see what comes of the credits scenes. The visuals are really amazing considering they got a pretty small budget for the MCU. The fights are phenomenal as I’m sure you’ve heard a million times, and the journeys the characters go on are fleshed out without being overstuffed. Most of the issues I’ve seen people having with this film are the same exact issues they have with every other MCU film, from the cgi to the humour. Absolutely top10 MCU for me.

Your comment about the forced humour actually surprised me a lot here since Jeremy Jahns (who recently seems to have become a lot more critical of the MCU) actually said he didn't think it was an issue in this movie; that said, he also insisted that it WAS an issue in Black Widow and I definitely didn't agree with him then, so we'll see I guess🤷🏻♂️
I'm really over mcu humor especially in black widow and the last spider man but I thought this movie did the humor really well which I was not expecting
I don’t like people with double standards. You whine when MCU movies don’t have enough action or, your favorite word... “spectacle...” but then you spent 3 minutes here complaining that Shang-Chi had too much? Give me a break. 🙄
There are different contexts, and different things work well in different types of films. "You whine when MCU movies don’t have enough action or, your favorite word... “spectacle...”" - Give an example of this.
This movie isn't one of my most anticipated MCU movies so I'm not desperate to see it but I am definitely looking forward to it because of course I'm a huge MCU fan! Awkwafina was great in jumani so I'm excited to see her
Obviously, the most hyped movie of 2021 is Spider-Man: No Way Home. But, Shang-Chi is a brand new hero making his debut in the mcu so that's what I'm excited about. As well as the epic choreography!
Thank-you Sean! As always, great video, and I appreciate the honesty on the many tropes and annoyances that made me fall in love with the MCU, now make me kinda worried about each new entry. So its nice to see Im not the only one. And with you mentions of many cameos, Im both excited for them, but worried at the same time, how many of those cameos are gonna take up screen time and away from the story, overall what I'm thinking and from hearing people's thoughts and from clips and trailers, it looks like it will be an asian Black Panther (2018)
Three phases in, i dont understand how Mcu tie backs are still a review point. Mcu is basically a big known and tested tv series project, it shouldnt be a talking point AT ALL. If said character didn't work out, thats because of shitty writing, not because of MCUrism
Just saw the movie ... It was amazing... And I agree with all of your points but I think the cgi made the movie more better not made it down because it had Godzilla level monsters
Ive been really wanting to watch more martial art films lately so I was happy to see this around the corner. But I didn't know if it would still have those constant forced jokes. Glad you pointed it out. It's literally what makes me not want to watch any of these in theaters anymore. I'm just so tired of their formula that they never break away from. Aside for the infinity war
This is most likely one of my favorite marvel films, They really do a great job of executing a comedy and action film at the same time. I was laughing Almost the whole time! I feel like as a person that’s just there to watch marvel movies.
People can have views on it. For me, this is arguably better than winter soldier for me. For Sean, the story might be a little weird and stuff but for me, I thought I was perfect. But that's just me. I have the same nitpick as Sean in some areas. But it doesn't pull me away from the film and I kinda think this is top tier MCU. It's damn sight better than black Widow that's for sure.
I agree with you. For me personally, this is on my Mount Rushmore of MCU movies, I just thought that it was fantastic. And I think you’re absolutely right about it being better than Black Widow.
What i don't like about the MCU is that it takes plots that sound interesting and could work with a unique vision on a smaller budget, and squishes them with the mcu template of being an origin story that's the same plot structure over and over, humor that's cringeworthy references to pop culture and timed poorly, and has alot of cgi. The MCU is basically like fast food cinema, prepared and cooked very fast without really changing anything that would offer something truly different.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout yeah especially when there are low budget indie films that look better than these 150-200 million dollar budgets and only has humor when it needs to.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout you’re dealing with the ten rings you’re gonna do CGI and we want great visuals and great cinematography you’re gonna spend a lot of money which all I’ve heard is that this movie looks incredible and the fight scenes Look incredible
Well all those things you listed are negatives to the majority of MCU fans look at The critic scores and audience scores they have been a huge success and of course we are dealing with superhero movies are gonna have a lot of CGI So just to warn you eternal’s and Spiderman no way home Has a lot of CGI and is going to have lotta humor some might not hit the mark but majority will So I’m just giving you a warning since you don’t like those things
While most people want to watch this because it's a martial arts movie in mcu, I want to watch this for Tony Leung because I grew up loving his films. Also cuz I am so excited for another Hong Kong star to shine in a Western film
@Sean Chandler - Dude.. You must be the reactor who is the most out of touch with the general audience that Ive ever seen. I just CAN NOT believe you listed the bus fight and the building fight as negatives... You really, REALLY have NO IDEA about what MCU fans want, or even about what makes a good movie/tv show xDxD
I’m excited for this movie too! Question for you Sean: how does someone see it early like you and other movie critics do? Is it an invite? I’ve always been curious about that. Big fan of your stuff! Thanks for the review!
Not only did Shang Chi have the classic martial arts charm but it also had a Dragon Ball Z, Avatar the last airbender, Mortal Kombat, Godzilla and Sonic the Hedgehog vibes with the ten rings 😎
To be honest, I would’ve preferred a 3 hour epic with the story told in a linear fashion, with Shang-Chi’s childhood taking up most of the first act of the film, similar to The Queen’s Gambit. But still, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Features some of the most brilliantly filmed action scenes in the MCU.
Glad to hear your review! Yeah, one thing I was concern about was the MCU typical humor. However, I'm glad to hear the martial arts scenes are good, the story feels fresh for phase 4 and the family drama is satisfying. Hopefully when the MCU starts doing rated R movies in the future, (Blade and Dark Avengers) they know how to balance it out lol. I can't wait for this movie!!! 🙌💪
How can you say one of the issues you had with Blackwidow is that it didn't feel like it mattered for the MCU, but then say Shang-Chi´s bad aspect is that it somehow has to connect to the MCU
I find it funny that shang-chi in concept would be the least anticipated Marvel movie out of the four this year, but I'm actually most excited for this one out of all the movies even Spider-Man 3.
great review bro and i'm even more pumped to go see the movie even more because of all the action and the 2 post credit scenes I have faith this movie will do well in theaters as well :)
Saw it tonight. We thought that it was excellent. Not my new favourite Marvel film, but a great weird, fantasy martial arts movie. Beautiful & epic like house of flying daggers & hero
It felt fresh in the whole Marvel universe and the fact that they brought in the chinese culture was really good. I liked the tension between Shang Chi and his father and I think all the actors and actresses did good job. The standout of the film was definitely Trevor 😂!
Yeah pretty much my thoughts. The martial arts and the family drama (especially the complex villain) were the highlights in a movie that I had NO interest in from the trailers. My dad and I enjoyed ourselves more than we expected, and yeah during the bus fight, I thought of Nobody as well. The characters were all quite good, too, and the two leads had great chemistry. But Marvel just can’t help themselves with the lame humor, especially when they undercut serious moments with a joke (I predicted correctly every time a poorly-timed joke would be tossed in to lighten the mood). And as spectacular as the martial arts and some of the other stuff was, the green screen was very distracting. I enjoyed Ben Kingsley’s performance, because there were so many times the humor from his character could have been cringe, but wasn’t. Better than Black Widow IMO, and I appreciated that you don’t REALLY need to be an MCU fan to enjoy this origin story, despite the cameos and post-credits scenes. If you MUST see it in theaters, it’s good at a matinee price, but I recommend waiting for streaming (unless you absolutely can’t), because at the end of the day, it’s yet another Phase Four project.
Notice how he never said the CGI was bad or anything or the story or the characters his problem was that it had humor in it that every MCU movie has And then it has CGI spectacle which all the critics love in audience so far they seen a movie
Hey man, chill out with the comments, I respect your opinion but bombing the comment section might not be the best way to get your point across. I get your criticisms because movies are subjective but Sean is just giving his initial opinion which very well may change over time. Have a good day too.
I mean I wonder if this point fans should stop being mad about the forced quips. Its MCU style. Like grimdark edginess is DC. Its only hardcore fans who notice that stuff and then the casual who just sees a decent MCU movie with kids and popcorn probably just laughs when appropriate. It also annoys me as a DC fan to see people angry about grimdark Suicide Squad and whatnot, its DC DAMMIT. lol sorry The problem with DC is that not every casual person likes edge but most normies like a good joke.
Honestly I don’t get where people are coming from when I hear them say “The MCU formula” Like what about them is formulaic? Come on guys, you make it sound like the MCU just does a copy and paste every time they make a new movie
Agreed. Maybe they forced too much humor into the Avengers movies and Thor: Ragnarok, but the GOTG and the Ant-Man movies benefited greatly from humor and almost all of it landed in those movies. Perhaps Marvel's most formulaic movie was Doctor Strange because it was a bland origin story lifted directly from the comics. The humor and the story beats were very predictable in that one, but I would argue that most MCU films are not that safe and predictable.
Great video, really enjoy you're channel. I loved the movie thought the movie was great not top 5 mcu but I really enjoyed it myself. Lastly when do you think we should expect your mcu 25 ranking.
I thought the movie was amazing! You can take to the characters very well. The comedy worked and it was so funny. It had amazing CGI and action scenes. You understand the villains motivations. Easily the best thing was thing was the fight choreography. It was unique and just awesome to watch. Definitely the best hand to hand fights in the MCU
Random comment but I somehow love how you say ”f” with spit in your mouth like in 5:56 Lmao😅 ...that said a Great review! Looks best mcu movie of the year and top 5 best Marvel movies! Can’t have too high expectations but I’m really excited about it!!!
Spoilers: The plot point of having that 360 degree face butt creature (it was so weird that I forgot the name) lead them into the secret village was so weird and plot convenient, personally there should have been a better balance of seriousness and silliness, ragnorak certainly delivers on that because it knows not to take itself seriously. However, this movie has many serious moments with the family drama that I feel like Trevor and that plot point were totally out of place and definitely made the second half worse than the first.

The filmmakers cite Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Kung Fu Hustle (2004), Tai Chi Master (1993), the The Matrix (1999) series, Donnie Yen's "Ip Man" films and Jackie Chan films as an influence on the martial arts action. Michelle Yeoh starred in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
Shang-Chi is the first superhero film with an Asian leading protagonist for Marvel Studios
This movie was going to be made by Paramount Pictures before Disney bought Marvel.
In Xialing's room there is an AC/DC poster implying she is a fan of the band. AC/DC songs are well-known to be part of the Iron Man (2008)'s soundtrack as well the sequels.
First film by Destin Daniel Cretton to have a predominantly Asian cast.
Highest-grossing film of Destin Daniel Cretton's career.
Films mentioned during the commentary recording include The 36th chamber of Shaolin (1978), Clueless (1995), Rush Hour (1998), The Matrix (1999), Kung Fu Hustle (2004), Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010), Oldboy (2013) The Five Obstructions (2003).
This is Mark Ruffalo's eighth appearance in the MCU, three of them only in post-credit scenes: Iron Man 3 (2013), Captain Marvel (2019) and this movie.
Shang-Chi (and his mother) uses soft martial arts, such as taiji quan, to counter hard martial arts, such as Kung fu against his father.
This is my most hyped up movie for the rest of the year so my expectations are 10/10 for this movie
There is and the more I hear it, the more excited I am.
I’m not gonna look at a movie differently just because the cast is mainly fellow. Asians
Seeing it today! Really glad I get to see it in IMAX. Thanks for the review.
I would love to see Jackie Chan in the MCU perhaps as a mentor figure or even a villain to Shang Chi.

It's when the embargo lifted.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout yeah austin said it on stream yesterday. Love ur review!
Really cool to have a major Asian character in the MCU. I mean I guess there’s Wong, but he’s pretty minor.
MAN, this movie looks great.
The main thing I’m wondering is whether Tim Roth returns or if it’s just the CGI model of abomination
Idk about shang chi, but he is confirmed for she hulk
I can't wait! Great review as usual
Hey Sean, I watch A LOT of reviewers and content creators and you are up there as one of the most earnest and I can't wait to check out this movie.
My guess is that the mid credit scene is that it is the Trevor Mandarin guy reacting to the things that went down in Shang Chi
Wait where did u get that “proof Tony stark has a heart” model in ur background, looks really cool
A fan sent it to me
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout damnit
You can find it on Amazon, warning though, it’s around $100. I was really interested in getting it as well, but in my opinion it was overpriced.
@@kenadamsbusinessfirm It's not cheap, but it's also NOT cheaply made. It's metal and legit case. You're paying $100 but you get a $100 product.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout that’s good to know, thank you!
Akwafina not being just an NPC like the Thor sidecast or plenty other MCU movies, is actually REALLLLLY huge to me
Dude you are soo close to 200k subs
Congrats
Can’t wait to see it.
I don’t think this one follows the same story structure. But it does force a great $75 million martial arts adventure into the $150 million MCU mold.
@@SaurianStudios1207 I would advise you to check out Chris Stuckman review He pretty much nails how this movie is
Well all those things you listed are negatives to the majority of MCU fans look at The critic scores and audience scores they have been a huge success and of course we are dealing with superhero movies are gonna have a lot of CGI So just to warn you eternal’s and Spiderman no way home Has a lot of CGI and is going to have lotta humor some might not hit the mark but majority will So I’m just giving you a warning since you don’t like those things
I'm so tired with the "funny" humor in these movies. Russo bros had the right mix.
The movie was great, I disagree with all your issues with the movie!
While most people want to watch this because it's a martial arts movie in mcu, I want to watch this for Tony Leung because I grew up loving his films. Also cuz I am so excited for another Hong Kong star to shine in a Western film
I kinda lost interest in the mcu after Endgame but I’m definitely gonna see this one and it’s mostly because of Tony Leung.
@@henkjarnosla1991 Me too
@Sean Chandler - Dude.. You must be the reactor who is the most out of touch with the general audience that Ive ever seen. I just CAN NOT believe you listed the bus fight and the building fight as negatives... You really, REALLY have NO IDEA about what MCU fans want, or even about what makes a good movie/tv show xDxD
When you're still waiting on that "spoiler review": 💀
I’m excited for this movie too! Question for you Sean: how does someone see it early like you and other movie critics do? Is it an invite? I’ve always been curious about that. Big fan of your stuff! Thanks for the review!
This movie looks really epic.! I want to see how Shang Chi’s character becomes an avenger and how he will fit in to the future.
im really excited for this movie but still disappointed that they robbed iron man of his greatest villain, The Mandarin.
Not only did Shang Chi have the classic martial arts charm but it also had a Dragon Ball Z, Avatar the last airbender, Mortal Kombat, Godzilla and Sonic the Hedgehog vibes with the ten rings 😎
I was already excited for Shang-Chi, I grabbed my ticket last week.
This one does seem to have a much more mixed reception. I’m looking forward to this one but.. the thing most people were hyped for was Abomination…
I've mostly heard positive things, to be honest.
? It’s gotten mainly positive stuff
It's getting rave reviews. Chandler's review is one of the more moderate ones out there.
Is there going to be a spoiler review? Because I want to watch Sean talk about this movie for 30 min - 1 hour.
Yeah I agree. There are so much stuff that I want to talk about with people but I don’t want to spoil anything for them.
In concept, Black Widow would be the least anticipated. It’s a flashback movie about a dead character.
great review bro and i'm even more pumped to go see the movie even more because of all the action and the 2 post credit scenes I have faith this movie will do well in theaters as well :)
Thanks for the review!
Loved the video
It would be really cool if you review" a silent voice"
Hate that some parts of the world won’t be able to see it for months. Definitely seeing it this weekend
I love your vids Sean
THanks
It also annoys me as a DC fan to see people angry about grimdark Suicide Squad and whatnot, its DC DAMMIT. lol sorry
The problem with DC is that not every casual person likes edge but most normies like a good joke.
I haven't listened to Sean for 18 months it's like drinking 3 cans of RedBull then jumping out of a plane without a parachute
IT'S HERE!
THE SHANG CHI REVIEW IS HERE!
Great video Sean! I’m really excited to see the movie mainly because I also really like martial arts movies.
Great video, really enjoy you're channel. I loved the movie thought the movie was great not top 5 mcu but I really enjoyed it myself. Lastly when do you think we should expect your mcu 25 ranking.
Been looking forward to this one for a while, could you do some rankings of invincible?
This is an awesome review! It was dead on!
Can’t wait for this movie
I thought the movie was amazing! You can take to the characters very well. The comedy worked and it was so funny. It had amazing CGI and action scenes. You understand the villains motivations. Easily the best thing was thing was the fight choreography. It was unique and just awesome to watch. Definitely the best hand to hand fights in the MCU
Random comment but I somehow love how you say ”f” with spit in your mouth like in 5:56 Lmao😅
...that said a Great review! Looks best mcu movie of the year and top 5 best Marvel movies! Can’t have too high expectations but I’m really excited about it!!!
I’m excited cuz their looks to be a lot of action and I love Kung Fu type movies. So should be a good time. And I love marvel movies.
I’m a huge marvel fan with stan lee, cap’s sheild, and 100 marvel funko pops on his wall and I thought it was decent… 6/10
You can’t trust someone with funko pops
Spoilers:
The plot point of having that 360 degree face butt creature (it was so weird that I forgot the name) lead them into the secret village was so weird and plot convenient, personally there should have been a better balance of seriousness and silliness, ragnorak certainly delivers on that because it knows not to take itself seriously. However, this movie has many serious moments with the family drama that I feel like Trevor and that plot point were totally out of place and definitely made the second half worse than the first.
Cannot wait for this movie! First reviews have been great!
It isn't surprising to me that this movie is getting good reviews because it's a Marvel movie. I cannot wait to see this movie!
Good review! I like Wu …. best villain in Marvel.
