sprite work is great, but they could used those animations in a "better" game, they could of made game typical side scrolling platformer and have same animations when you hit things, but in same time make the game actually fun to play....

I feel I should mention there is a Kid Klown in Crazy Chase 2! For the Playstation 1 and it was only released in Japan and is on the Japan PSN. It's actually much easier and longer with 16 stages (8 themes divided into 2 stages each). The controls are better and you can actually run backwards. Plus it's in 3D so judging distances is slightly easier. Also it has an anime intro and ending, also has 2 endings, a good and bad one. Maybe a review someday? It would be interesting.
There was also a port of the original to the gba, so looks like we will have to torture Jared for just a tad bit longer.

Gorgeous sprite work and pretty hilarious story for an unfortunately horrible game. I always think games like this make for some of your best videos though. Just bad obscure 16-bit games that have that glimmer of potential. Your sense of sarcasm makes them so enjoyable.

I played this game as a kid, like 8 year old. It was hard. I remember spending so many hours trying to get through, but finishing every stage always felt so good. Now I have 106% in Super Meat Boy and my goto game to play casually is Dark Souls.

Is it just me, or isn't there an actual way to predict how to get the good ending?
I know a lot of people say the good ending is a 50/50 shot, but there's a clue that's pretty easy to spot. If you look in the bottom right-hand corner, there's a red light that, if you hover a key over a correct slot (which is still randomly chosen BTW), it will blink in succession. It blinks for two slots and after that, you get the good ending.
Maybe it was my dumb luck, but that's how I always get the good ending.
Just a minor note to see. The game is still just a big complication of the devs saying *FUCK YOU* but jeez...that sprite work is amazing. The game looks amazing (even if it plays like garbage and is completely unfair).

To be fair, there are 4 different control schemes, of which I use type C. This changes the move forward button from Down on the D-Pad to the Y button, which makes jumping side to side much easier.

The part where you need to use the keys is pretty easy. If you put the cursor in every single one of the keyholes you can see that there will be a keyhole that makes the red light in the bottom right flash. If it flashes that means that it is the right one.

For what it's worth about getting hurt right at the start, there's also an HP bubble right there, so you could make the argument that it's a way to teach the player about HP bubbles...you know, healing you.
It's pretty common for the player to lose health right at the start of the game to introduce the healing mechanic, instead of just waiting until the player takes damage on their own accord.

Thing is a lot of fan games, indie games, and even AAA games like Dark Souls use a lot of what Kid Klown pulls gameplay wise.
So as horrifying as it is to say it: Kid Klown was a visionary.
The difference between this and Dark Souls is that in Dark Souls you at least know that something is going to hurt you pretty much by looking at it. You don't (to my knowledge) have moments where suddenly that bonfire that was a symbol of safety and hope for the entire game gets up and instantly burns you to a crisp. This game trolls you by playing with your expectations which is always frustrating game design. I'm not saying Dark Souls type gameplay is a perfect, unflawed conept (I have no opinion one way or the other since I have not played it myself), but from what I've seen, you at least know what you're getting into and can prepare yourself.
That is true, though Dark Souls has engaged in cheap shots startlingly similar to the one's Kid Klown plays. The addition of safe havens is a good anti-frustration feature.
Playing with a player's expectations can be done well and can really make a game memorable, just look at Undertale and The Stanley Parable.
Like the other guy said, Dark souls gives subtle ques to the player of how to avoid danger. For example, you can tell regular treasure chests and mimics (an enemy that disguises itself as a treasure chest) apart by looking at what direction the chain attached to the treasure chests points to. In this game all the balloons look the same. You can't tell the bad ones from the good ones. That's bullshit. Please do not compare dark souls to this.
That is correct, but Dark Souls STILL has cheap shots that come out of nowhere. There are moments with hints but there are still a lot of moments that will damage or outright kill you if you didn't know about it before. Forcing you to remember danger areas like with little warning this is incredibly common in games that try to be hard as possible from Dark Souls, to Ghouls n' Ghosts, to I Wanna Be the Guy.
Dracomut Can you be a bit more specific with "cheap shots". The only thing even close to a cheap shot would be the dragon on the bridge and even then areas where dragons breathe fire over always have scorch marks. The only cheap thing I can think of would be enemy placement. Which is null cause you can bait out enemies one by one in many cases.
Now it's hard to say the souls series is perfect, perhaps there are moments where you cannot possibly tell when something is coming. It's just that after playing all the souls games, it seems way too fair to the player to be compared to I wanna be the guy, and it's certainly not as hard as ghouls n' ghost's imo. Like I can't think of something that was REALLY bullshit in the series.
To sum it up, In the Souls series there are almost always ways to "sidestep" bullshit (like the asylum demon - if you look around the arena, there's a door you can go through to fight the boss after you get proper equipment instead of at the start). In games like I wanna be the guy, or old school "NES" hard games you have to tackle bullshit head on.
this game would've been perfect for the AVGN... i would've liked seeing him getting pissed off at it!
