Games played: Uh oh. I said that my games played section would be back with a vengeance this week but it's not. All the games covered are named in the video. Well, I guess I can say that Mario Kart 64 is the game played at the beginning for whoever may not know that :)
Bird! Do a Saturn games even haters will hate please! BTW Never heard of Mischief Makers but damn did it "peak my interest". Definitely going to play that sucker.
Well I mean I understand the hate for it the n64 aged like milk compared to the other consoles of the time and the controller is kinda trash but you can just use a brawler controller instead if you don’t like it it also has an absolute ton of bad games and n64 is the worst port for 3rd party games but the first party games are great on the console it’s a good console but it’s definitely lacking more then some other options from the same time period
@@pepperidgefarms1772 The N64 is not without its issues, but what are you comparing it to, the PS1? The Saturn? The cartridges allow for lightning fast load times, and there are a bunch of games which have aged very well, most of them being first party or second party Nintendo titles. N64 consoles are also just physically more durable and long lasting than the PS1 and the Saturn because of the lack of moving parts, with the exception of the control sticks, and first party memory paks (which are a pain in the ass to repair once the battery fails). I have tried to get into Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, and I have always felt that these games are inferior to the original Mario 64, and that's not a controversial opinion, at least when compared to Mario Sunshine. Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are much more highly regarded, but I still just haven't been able to get into either of them. The control just feels less precise, Mario feels slower, the gameplay is more scripted and linear, and doesn't reward experimentation as much, and I really am not a fan of the way you're supposed to use the Wiimote to do the spin move, or to shoot those little colored stars. I have a third party memory card for my N64 which is over 25 years old, and I was able to replace the battery with a one or two dollar watch battery I found at my local supermarket, and all I needed was a small screwdriver to be able to do the replacement. You can buy replacement control stick parts for surprisingly cheap, and it's not especially difficult to do the repair yourself. All you really need is the right screwdriver, and you can also just buy a modern third party N64 controller like a Retro Fighter 64, or look for refurbished original N64 controllers (I'm planning to sell some of my extra ones on eBay once I get them fixed up).
Man, my friends and i used to sing that NBA Hangtime menu “song” all the time. Also we memorized the corny rap. “3point threat no sweat you can bet, back you down fadeaway all net haaaaangtime y’all”
Happy to see my favorite N64 game Ogre Battle 64 make the list! In fact, quick little story for you (😉): I worked as a teller at a bank back when OB64 came out. During a slow work day I thought I’d be clever and print an online guide for the game with the bank’s paper and ink. Little did I realize just how many pages, detailing units, items, and strategies, comprised this guide. I hastily had to reload the printer with paper as it continuously printed what turned out to be a rather thick tome for about 10 minutes or so. How I didn’t get caught or in any trouble still baffles me to this day!
I've always loved the 64. It's just so fun and toyetic. It being the last cart based console other than the switch also makes it unique. Or maybe I just really, really like 3D platformers. Could be that too,
Timmy isn't a real person but a metaphor of the parts of childhood we left behind while growing up in an attempt to be viewed as more mature. This Timmy got rid of his Sega because "videogames are for children" and started going by Tim. When we self actualize and understand being an adult means we get to choose what we enjoy, a past world of things left behind becomes ours for rediscovery.
I am a member of some retro handheld forums and subreddits and invariably someone asks "can this cheaper device play N64?" And normally the answer is "some games not all, you might need to fiddle with some settings" and then they go "No, I am only interested in Mario Kart 64". That game is insanely good and even nowadays so popular it never ceases to amaze me.
I always found Rocket and Sly 1 interesting as Sucker Punch's later games while fine for non-open worlds those two titles are their 3D platformers. Rocket has some charm, mechanics and personality that's definitely worth it for platformer fans.
Absolutely, but he made it pretty clear at the start that this that it was a list for people who hate the controller. And why do so many hate the controller? The number one reason is the horribly aged stick, with the foggy graphics and 3 handles on the controller being a fairly close 2nd and 3rd. With these games you can eliminate some of those annoyances. 2D games don't suffer from the fog, and in some of these you use (or can use) the D-Pad. As for Star Fox 64, using the stick is a little less annoying since it's only used for moving your ship and not for platforming. Can't say that for Paper Mario, but it still eliminates the fog issue being a 2D game. *Edit:* Foggy graphics are obviously not a controller issue, so my bad. Stupid me just ended up grouping it in with the controller issues in my mind for some reason, but it is another reason people hate on N64 anyway.
I might have gotten into that game if jump could have been mapped to a button, and there were a few other things that I found a bit annoying, like the shaking mechanic, and some of the sounds. I really cant' stand having to press up on the D pad to jump! >:( The game definitely looks great and I do respect it. In hindsight, it's clear that the N64 was actually very good at doing 2D, and it's a shame that there weren't more 2D games (or games which blend 2d and 3d graphics) made for the system. Yoshi's Story, for example, looks absolutely amazing, and is a solid game, though most would agree that they would have preferred a more challenging game which was more similar to Yoshi's Island in its gameplay. 2D games really weren't that popular on other systems as well. Even great 2D games like Castlevania Symphony of the Night (for PS1) didn't sell well, despite receiving critical acclaim, and the poor performance of even extremely well made 2D games really contributed to scaring developers away from investing in making them. It took years before 2D game development became normal again, proving that game developers probably never should have completely abandoned it in the first place.
I just beat Ogre Battle the other night and immediately started a new game. It's pretty much the best N64 game other than WWF No Mercy! I'm glad you included it!
Love the N64. It's not everyone's favorite but I adore it. Besides the analog stick grinding itself to dust, I actually really like the controller and feel like it's both versatile and really precise. Some of my favorites include: All the Cruis'n titles Turok Perfect Dark (I like the controls for shooters on the system) Paper Mario Tactics Ogre Worms Armageddon Spider-Man (even if the PS1 version is better) Diddy Kong Racing Mario 64 Mario Kart 64 Both Zeldas Wave Race 64 The Mario Party games Bomber Man 64 Sin and Punishment F-Zero X Sorry for the huge list! I love a lot of the games
Good list! I owned Mischief Makers, Star Fox 64 and Paper Mario 64. Mischief Makers was the only one I couldn't complete as a kid as some of the later levels got fairly tricky. Star Fox 64 and Paper Mario 64 will always be classics in my book. Many N64 games are good, simple fun. I never met anyone who actively hated the N64. My friends and family really enjoyed the games as much as I did. We would play Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Smash Bros, and the Mario Party games constantly.
The N64 has a lot of great racing games that even haters might enjoy: Beetle Adventure Racing, Wave Race, Diddy Kong Racing, F-Zero X, and many more. Also, how can you not love Banjo-Kazooie?
I didn’t care for the N64 when it launched, but eventually got it for the racing games, Diddy Kong, Wave Race, etc. Paper Mario is the game that makes me nostalgic for the system.
It wasn't until coming across your videos in the past couple weeks that I even knew there was hate for the N64 controller. You get a D-pad, but also an analog stick that you don't have to stretch your thumb to its limits to reach 🤷. I always thought it felt great and had an effective set of buttons.
Starfox ( lylat wars ) is an absolute masterpiece; it basically had every scifi action trope and reference in it + it had that great split path feature with different outcomes
I'm so happy to see Mischief Makers get some light here - that was a title I rented back when it was brand new. I have this memory of visiting a game store that would let you rent games, and my brother asked me at the counter if there was anything I wanted to pick out, and I just saw the Mischief Makers box sitting on the counter there and spontaneously picked that out. It also came with the manual and I just fell in love with the character designs and overall charm of the game. It's definitely a game I wish would come back someday like the other Treasure titles have. It's one of those special nostalgic experiences I find comfort in revisiting every once in a while.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention I wanted to give a shout-out to Killer Instinct Gold as a possible candidate for this list - it's another title that uses the D-pad and it's a really fun arcade title in the classic fighting game style. I love playing around with the ludicrous speed + full power options.
I always like my N64 because I have quite a few hidden gems on it plus this was a good quality four player machine always had fun playing Diddy Kong and Wave Race on it
As a proud N64 hater, this video spoke to my soul 😅. Your list seems legit though, I picked up a copy of Mischief Makers last month. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for Ogre Battle 64 and Paper Mario.
Well I gotta say, I unsubbed awhile back because I was just trying to stay away from TH-cam and was slimming down my subscriptions. That was clearly a mistake because you just won me back. Great video!
@BenDallas and that's exactly why I love the Nintendo 64 and despise the XBOX 360, because N64 has lots of my favorite genre and XBOX 360 barely has any at all.
@@PaperBanjo64 I can respect that, all I remember everyone wanting to play on N64 was Mario Kart, and then Gamecube it was more of the same, Mario Kart and Pacman Racing... So actually I'd rather play 3D platformers than Kart Racing games lol....I truly despise the Mario Kart stuff cuz that's all anyone ever wanted to play, and I was like, hey there's a lot of other great games can't we try other genres? 😝 I was just never good at the 3D platformers though but yeah I'd rather play those than Kart racers any day hehehe
I would also add Road rash 64, and Star Soldier vanishing earth (the only overhead spaceship shmup on the N64) to the list. Those are two games that I've spent many hours playing, and still enjoy to this day. Thanks for another entertaining and enlightening video!
@@Gutsyredcoat Road Rash 64 is one of the most entertaining 3D retro games out there. I love how the game is unintentionally hilarious. It was supposed to be this badass hardcore combat racing game, and it does succeed at being a worthy sequel to previous Road Rash games, and is a solid combat racer, but... There's something about the combat, the sound effects, and the physics which comes across as incredibly absurd to me, and I know I'm not the only one who finds it hilarious, making the game likely to be well worth playing, if only for a few hours.
@@syncmonism i have always found it intentionally hilarious. The devs definitely had good senses of humor. With rider names like stinky, dirty ed, big jim, lucky gene etc. The fact that there is a giant banana as a weapon, the ridiculous sound effects of characters all the "whoooooaaaa! Dohh! Gaaaahhh!" The silly consolation prizes while calling you a loser like a pet rock, stick of gum, the shit talking the mechanics and cops do if you total your bike or get busted, the 4X damage multiplier that just sends doods flying in one hit and of course the insane mode you unlock when you finish big game with the 300mph bikes that are impossible to control, as well as the scooter mode which just makes for a great slow moving race to just beat the hell out of each other. The combat, beating everyone off their bikes and racking up your rap sheet, hitting pedestrians, taking out cops and damaging cars is way too satisfying. The physics make for some hilarious wrecks that many can never be duplicated again, making every race unique in that way.
I am an unapologetic lover of NBA Hangtime on the N64-it’s a near flawless arcade port that served for countless hours of fun in our household as we became older kids. And one of my favorite games of all time is Castlevania for N64, which is often shunned as terrible by the haters, but it’s still a heck of an first 3D adventure game with a surprising amount of homage to the prior entries in the series.
@@grawman67 if you like NBA Jam, Hangtime is really like Jam, but on steroids in all the right ways. You can create your own player and by winning games gain attribute points to continually beer the character up for lots of replay value. Cannot recommend it enough!
Great video RB, did some chuckling. No doubt I'll be singing your theme tune in my head for the next fews days as per usual. Keep up the good work, I love this channel!
Paper Mario is a great choice, the art style especially lends itself well to having aged so finely for me its 1080. still never get tired perfecting my racing lines down the mountain and trying to beat old records. which is pretty tough considering I held some former world records back in the day for the game :) still the best technical extreme sports arcade racer imo also, dont underestimate the value of a good controller when revisiting these games. few years ago I was struggling w my OG tri-prong thinking the console had aged terribly, but in reality the controls were just non responsive due to stick wear. got a new controller and bam - literally a totally different experience
Gamecube games aged better overall, but I'll always love N64 more. It was limited in games, but at the time, many were generation-defining experiences that stood as the best entries in their series. OoT was way more impactful than Windwaker or TP, just as Mario 64 was more impactful than Sunshine. It also kicked off many popular IPs like Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Mario Party, Banjo, Paper Mario, etc GC gave us great entries in less popular IPs like Metroid Prime & F-Zero GX, and introduced Pikmin, but at the time they mainly stayed contained among Nintendo fans & didnt have the reach the N64 titles. N64 also popularized controller features like analog stick, rumble, trigger button, and 4 ports default. Anyway, i still enjoy playing GC games more NOW, but at the time, N64 was more special to me.
I own every game in this video. And every game in this video it's fun to play. This video gets my seal of approval. Video video video video video video video..................... video
D-Pad or not, I always have my left hand over the that left handle. Although the D-Pad on the n64 is criminally under used for how solid and good it actually is.
When you hear a person say. "Bring it back to it's roots" They really mean Back To The Good Ones. I think it's more like," Bring it back to it's Trunks! Example of this is Sonic 1 is a root. Sonic 2 or maybe 2 and 3 are trunks. Then some branches and then a bunch of dead leaves that make us want to go back to our Trunks!
Just picked up a copy of Starfox last night and have been wanting to play it for a while. Will definitely keep an eye out for some of the other titles because I enjoy getting ahold of lesser known games that turned out to be great
Battletanx: Global Assault Such a gem! 4 player wars with NPCs and everyone on a different team or a 2v2…fps guided missiles and nukes… flattening anyone driving the tiny mototank with a Goliath tank… Mindless mechanical violence at its peak 😆
I know my childhood was filled with obscured camera angles and are mostly just sentiment fun... Im ok with that because the N64 is probably my favorite console overall! Don't hate on ol' 007 and Perfect Dark or Hybrid Heaven! Fun for me anyhow lol
The dream scenario growing up is to have a ps1 and a friend who has a n64. Most good n64 games are multi-player party games. But you obviously spotted some single player gems too 👍
Yeah, it can be hard to have two or more current gen consoles when growing up. I was lucky to have the PS1 and then my uncle gave me his N64 when he didn't want it anymore. Otherwise, it would have been years later I would have had one
What's really odd is that I only had one friend with a PS1 growing up. I swear I was living in a bubble. Had some great times playing Crash Bandicoot on it with him though.
Have you ever beat that game? I think it’s great too but some of those levels are really tough. Also, is there a way to start a new profile on that game?
@@RetroBirdGaming I think you’re right. It’s very unique and sometimes I have to be in the right mood to play it, but I’ve had so much fun with that game.

I love N64, Mortal Kombat Trilogy n64, THPS 1-3 N64, 180 snowboarding 🏂 N64, Rush 2 N64, Rush Sanfransisco extreme racing N64, Rush 2024 San Francisco Extreme racing N64, Crusen USA N64, Crusen Word N64, Crusen Exotica N64,
I'm honestly rather fond of the early 3d look of 5th gen consoles and pc games. Requires imagination but it's neat seeing how hard some dev's had to work to make something vaguely convincing back then lol. Golden Eye is perhaps my favorite from this console still, something about the gameplay loop never gets old to me(btw use 1.2 control scheme, you'll thank me if you never tried it)
Great list! I absolutely loved Mischief Makers as a kid. Picked it up as an adult and I appreciate it even more; nothing beats shake-shaking. Also, the music is amazing!
The Nintendo 64.... Has some of my favorite games ever, and holds my favorite gaming memories ever. Goldeneye and Perfect dark were obvious choices, me and my friends played, so so much of the MP. Now, the best for me is WWF No Mercy, 4 Players, I will never forget the all nighters, pizza parties and snacks that me and my friends always had every weekend when this game came out, it brought us so much joy as wrestling fans back then, and it still holds up today!
For me the graphics aren't the issue, only the blurry filter they used to smooth them out. It makes your television screen look like it is coated with vaseline.
@@themidcentrist I think that's why he plays on original hardware on a CRT. i play them on a pc and try to limit the filtering and upscaling. now on current-gen hardware on an LCD (Switch) can be pretty bad. especially when it's blown up on a tv in dock mode.
The N64 may not have had many JRPGs (and no really good ones aside from Paper Mario), it did have some racing games in spades. Most of them good, even. Cruis'n series, Beetle Adventure Racing, F-Zero, San Fransisco Rush, Wipeout 64 were all good. GT 64 is a surprisingly competent racing games for fans of 90s JGTC monsters, too. Even F1 Pole Position is decent enough in the sub 10 buck category
Great video as always! I would love to see a collab between you and Sega Lord X. One SRPG from the 90's that I find to be amazing is the original Vandal Hearts.
I think one of the most overlooked reasons that N64 games seem so long in the tooth is the controller. I like the bizarre form of the n64 controller more than most, but I think that since it was so different, whether you're playing ports/emulating on a platform with a more modern controller or playing on the original hardware, the controls are just so different than everything else we've been using for the last coupe decades that it feels strange.
I have one that is the kind of game no one would guess. An N64 game I can and always will play is Worms Armageddon. It's one of those things where just looking at it I figured it wasn't for me. I had some nostagia for it, decided to pay too much for a copy and tried it out and now I've put about 60 hours into it mostly just selecting randomly generated maps and trying to beat the overpowered A.I., beat the story mode and campaigns too. Probably says more about the game overall than it's N64 port but I like playing it that way. I'd also add F-Zero X and Puzzle League. I also agree with Mischief Makers, I'm still going back to beat my clear times in that one. Also 64th like on the video, your welcome
Honestly, I picked up my N64 solely because I sent my PlayStation in for repair and needed something for the time. All I ever had was 3 games- Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Killer Instinct Gold. I love the 64 and have beefed up my collection considerably since.
You did good. I’ve actually been playing Paper Mario and just beat the toy box level. Such a great game(I beat it before, but wow, that was over 20 years ago!!!😮) And I’ve seen some positive reviews and things said about Mischief Makers but after seeing this video, I’m definitely going to have to get it, so thanks 🙏
Nice list, don't disagree with any of them. I think N64 haters don't hate the Bond games. Goldeneye is a slam dunk of course, but haters shouldn't dismiss The World Is Not Enough. Throw in some DOOM 64, Starcraft 64, and WipEout 64 and who's gonna complain?
Great video, as usual. I've never understood the complaints about the N64 controller, especially using the joystick. I actually think it's more comfortable than some of the controllers nowadays. Also, you are spot on about N64 Hangtime! It's my favorite of all the NBA Jam type games. So much fun!
The only problem with modern day N64 gaming is the very poorly aged controller, but that problem has been solved thanks to Retro Fighters, so really there is no excuse to avoid playing all those classic N64 titles anymore. What people sometimes fail to understand about the OG controller these days is that besides the Saturn 3D pad (released just 2 months after the N64's Japanese release), it was the only controller that existed at the time with a thumb stick. There was no blueprint for how to make such a controller, so you have to cut Nintendo a lot of slack. That said, Sega obviously did a helluva lot better job with their 3D pad, so you certainly have to put at least a little bit of blame on Nintendo. They should have put more thought into it like Sega obviously did. Sega's not only had a significantly higher quality stick that still holds up even today, but even the button layout is identical to a modern day classic style controller, and it only has 2 handles just as it should. The only thing making it look outdated is how fat and incredibly circular it is, and perhaps the 6 face buttons since we haven't seen that in well over 2 decades.

People hating the N64 are small minded. Like so many things, one people starts it and a bunch getting bigger by the day will jump on the bandwagon. Well, I was (still am) a 3d animator since 1994, familiar with 3d rendering concepts like anti-aliasing, texture filtering, dynamic lighting, etc, even as a kid I knew how many advances the N64 brought to the table. It had Silicon Graphics DNA for a reason. A bunch of haters have ZERO idea whatsoever what these things meant in a home console in 1996. People with a bit more knowledge know the N64 was a tremendous milestone.
One really great game that people tend to overlook for the 64 is the Hot Wheels game it's a really fun racing game with some awesome customization elements. It seems like a title that anyone almost could have fun with whether you like 64 not like it's just one of those pick-up-and-play kind of games
I can't hate it but I can't have Nintendo console except post GBA handhelds. Nintendo is simply not my thing but I still enjoy watching videos about Nintendo consoles. Long live RetroBird!
Paper Mario is a solid title. I've never played that game until I got it in 2020, played from beginning to end and had fun the whole time. Sin & Punishment, F zero X, and bomberman hero are some I'd recommend that aren't as popular.
For some reason your videos stop appearing in my feed and notifications even though I have the bell on. I really enjoyed paper mario, I had started playing it years ago, then came back to it and finished it. I´m super proud of it.
I never was a huge n64 guy since as a kid I skipped it, going from the snes to the gamecube, but one I love to always play is Extreme G Incredible stuff for a fast paced racing game, especially the music >:)
One thing I hate about the N64 is when it accidently falls over that the ram will come out while it's on just leaving your console the old black screen of death. It happen to 2 consoles.
The RAM? Do you mean the game cartridge, or have you actually had the Expansion Pak fall out? (I thought it was wedged in too tightly for that to happen.)
I think gauntlet nfl blitz and perhaps Mario party should have been mentioned as well for people to play and enjoy. Hang time was also on snes just as fantastic idk if rpgs was a good choice for people to enjoy the 64 starfox is a solid idea though because you can beat it in. About a 1/2 hr
As a kid who loved the N64, I actually never owned Mario Kart 64 (Big shock, I know!). My N64 library wasn't the biggest. I had many of the essentials, but also missed out on many of them too, like Zelda OoT, until its re-release on the GC. It wouldn't be until I was already an adult when I discovered a bunch of good'uns that I had missed out on, such as Blast Corps, Buck Bumble, Chameleon Twist, Glover, Space Station Silicon Valley, Rocket: Robot On Wheels, Micro Machines 64 Turbo, Pilotwings 64, DOOM 64, and World Driver Championship. I tried to love Jet Force Gemini, but its collectathon crap was such a huge turn off. After a few boss battles I was done. It was a pretty enjoyable game in the first half tho. Blowing up those giant ants never gets old haha! All of my N64 gaming is done on the PC nowadays. I just can't push myself to go back to muddy 240p visuals and all-over-the-place frame rates. Oh, and that terrible analog stick on the N64 controller. Woof. Emulation has come such a long freakin' way... It incentivizes me to keep coming back to these old games.
A couple more examples I would point to would be Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth, the only legitimate shoot em up for the system (unless you count the Japan-only shmup creator series Dezaemon), as well as Goemon's Great Adventure. Both underrated games on the console.
I love the N64. It was my console growing up so I have sentimental feelings but it’s hard to say it is aged well. I think this generation along with the PS1 is the hardest retro gaming to go back to

Not enough people talk about Rocket: Robot on Wheels. It's such a classic, same with Duck Dodgers! Both are getting pretty pricey though!
Would be awesome if we could watch you stream these kind of games from time to time. Great video
Mischief Makers! So underrated!
Starfox 64 is amazing! Played it the first time as an adult and really liked it!
I was so glad to see Mischief Makers on the list. Such a great game that rarely gets mentioned.
I might have gotten into that game if jump could have been mapped to a button, and there were a few other things that I found a bit annoying, like the shaking mechanic, and some of the sounds. I really cant' stand having to press up on the D pad to jump! >:(
The game definitely looks great and I do respect it.
Some of my favorites include:
All the Cruis'n titles
Turok
Perfect Dark (I like the controls for shooters on the system)
Paper Mario
Tactics Ogre
Worms Armageddon
Spider-Man (even if the PS1 version is better)
Diddy Kong Racing
Mario 64
Mario Kart 64
Both Zeldas
Wave Race 64
The Mario Party games
Bomber Man 64
Sin and Punishment
F-Zero X
Sorry for the huge list! I love a lot of the games
No Golden Eye?
If you liked the racing games on it, Road Rash 64 and F-Zero X are my suggestions
Paper Mario sucked almost as much as Ocirana of Time

It wasn't until coming across your videos in the past couple weeks that I even knew there was hate for the N64 controller. You get a D-pad, but also an analog stick that you don't have to stretch your thumb to its limits to reach 🤷. I always thought it felt great and had an effective set of buttons.
Yeah, growing up I never knew people didn't like it either. Then I went on the internet years later and saw all the hate it gets.
I always like my N64 because I have quite a few hidden gems on it plus this was a good quality four player machine always had fun playing Diddy Kong and Wave Race on it
With four players it's always a blast!
As a proud N64 hater, this video spoke to my soul 😅. Your list seems legit though, I picked up a copy of Mischief Makers last month. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for Ogre Battle 64 and Paper Mario.
haha :)
How about F-Zero X? The speed on this game is really immense despite the visual sacrifice. The music rocks as well.
Well I gotta say, I unsubbed awhile back because I was just trying to stay away from TH-cam and was slimming down my subscriptions. That was clearly a mistake because you just won me back. Great video!
Glad to have you back!
The N64 did have a lot of underrated titles on it. When I think of N64 I always think 3D platformer system
yeah...3D platformers....I never cared for those...I guess that's why I don't like N64.
Road rash 64 could be a contender for the most enjoyable replayable game of all time
@@Gutsyredcoat Road Rash 64 is one of the most entertaining 3D retro games out there.
I love that Falco's text on screen said "This is horrible" right when you said "It's not that bad".
I also really love Castlevania but haven't tried NBA Hangtime. I'll have to try it!
@@grawman67 if you like NBA Jam, Hangtime is really like Jam, but on steroids in all the right ways. You can create your own player and by winning games gain attribute points to continually beer the character up for lots of replay value. Cannot recommend it enough!
@@Bushidounohana Ooh, sounds awesome!! I grew up with Jam on SNES so I think this would be great to play with my dad. Thanks!
Great video RB, did some chuckling. No doubt I'll be singing your theme tune in my head for the next fews days as per usual. Keep up the good work, I love this channel!
Paper Mario is a great choice, the art style especially lends itself well to having aged so finely
for me its 1080. still never get tired perfecting my racing lines down the mountain and trying to beat old records. which is pretty tough considering I held some former world records back in the day for the game :) still the best technical extreme sports arcade racer imo
also, dont underestimate the value of a good controller when revisiting these games. few years ago I was struggling w my OG tri-prong thinking the console had aged terribly, but in reality the controls were just non responsive due to stick wear. got a new controller and bam - literally a totally different experience
Gamecube games aged better overall, but I'll always love N64 more.
It was limited in games, but at the time, many were generation-defining experiences that stood as the best entries in their series. OoT was way more impactful than Windwaker or TP, just as Mario 64 was more impactful than Sunshine.
It also kicked off many popular IPs like Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Mario Party, Banjo, Paper Mario, etc
GC gave us great entries in less popular IPs like Metroid Prime & F-Zero GX, and introduced Pikmin, but at the time they mainly stayed contained among Nintendo fans & didnt have the reach the N64 titles.
N64 also popularized controller features like analog stick, rumble, trigger button, and 4 ports default. Anyway, i still enjoy playing GC games more NOW, but at the time, N64 was more special to me.
Hybrid heaven a hidden gem RPG on the N64. No one ever seems to mention it
I own every game in this video. And every game in this video it's fun to play. This video gets my seal of approval. Video video video video video video video..................... video
Waverace, Blast Corps, Gretzky 3D Hockey and F Zero for me!
Will definitely keep an eye out for some of the other titles because I enjoy getting ahold of lesser known games that turned out to be great
Beetle Adventure Racing 🙂. Fun and affordable!
Battletanx: Global Assault
Such a gem!
4 player wars with NPCs and everyone on a different team or a 2v2…fps guided missiles and nukes… flattening anyone driving the tiny mototank with a Goliath tank…
Mindless mechanical violence at its peak 😆
Subbed; love the character you’ve created and the content in general.
Welcome to the channel!

The one of a kind Timmy autographed mean bean machine cart is the holy grail of video games
Sonic 2 with a line
I'm amazed at how consistently funny and uplifting this channel is. When I need a pick me up, Retro Bird never disappoints.
Glad to hear it! That's the goal!
I know my childhood was filled with obscured camera angles and are mostly just sentiment fun... Im ok with that because the N64 is probably my favorite console overall! Don't hate on ol' 007 and Perfect Dark or Hybrid Heaven! Fun for me anyhow lol
How can you not mention some of the greatest wrestling games of all time when talking about the N64? WWF No Mercy? WCW vs The World?
The dream scenario growing up is to have a ps1 and a friend who has a n64. Most good n64 games are multi-player party games. But you obviously spotted some single player gems too 👍
Yeah, it can be hard to have two or more current gen consoles when growing up. I was lucky to have the PS1 and then my uncle gave me his N64 when he didn't want it anymore. Otherwise, it would have been years later I would have had one
@@grawman67 I had a gamecube growing up. I then managed to get my hands on a fully functioning ps2 for 50 dollars during the middle of its lifespan!

Given your list, Beetle Adventure Racing is a game you would probably enjoy.
I'm honestly rather fond of the early 3d look of 5th gen consoles and pc games. Requires imagination but it's neat seeing how hard some dev's had to work to make something vaguely convincing back then lol. Golden Eye is perhaps my favorite from this console still, something about the gameplay loop never gets old to me(btw use 1.2 control scheme, you'll thank me if you never tried it)
I loved Hang Time back in the day in the arcade but didn’t remember N64 had a port. I will definitely check it out!
I'm an early bird! Of course my nostalgia is with this one. Star wars racer, wave race of course mario64

Always look forward to Fridays and some of my favorite retro content.
NHL 99. StarFox. Clay Fighters 63 1/3 OH and 😂 Sculptors Cut had hilarious voice overs played it a lot as a kid man I miss those days
How dare the late 90s not have better graphics❤💯
100% agre on Paper Mario. If you haven't played this game I highly recommend it, I completed it a few years ago and enjoyed every minute of it
Glade to hear NBA Hang Time was on your list! No loading! Makes everyone want to say, Whooo Aoww, Whoo Aoww!
Yes! Let’s goooo! Perfect end to the week
Destruction Derby 64 & Diddy Kong Racing are two games I can go back and play.
Immediately after seeing the title I thought of Starfox 64 and Paper Mario. Great choices!
Zelda Tears of the Kingdom allows us to shake stuff to un-attach items! Hurray! Great video!
I don't know how anyone can hate N64. I guess I get not liking the look of early 3D but I like it.
Only thing from early 3D gaming I hate is tank controls and not many Nintendo 64 games had it.
@@PaperBanjo64 Yeah, tank controls were awful usually, especially in platformers, but they actually work well in horror games like Resident Evil.
This list needs a racing game, for which I nominate Hot Wheels Turbo Racing - an super fun pick-up-and-play racing game that nobody every talks about.
Great video, as usual. I've never understood the complaints about the N64 controller, especially using the joystick. I actually think it's more comfortable than some of the controllers nowadays.
Also, you are spot on about N64 Hangtime! It's my favorite of all the NBA Jam type games. So much fun!
Star fox...drool! Also, every time I see a yellow controller I wonder if it's the DK controller. Great video as always!
2:50 the Wii did a lot for that sort of thing.
PlayStation was better
And on the lighter side your videos are something i look forward to.
the N64 paper mario might just be my favorite game ever. good to see it on this list

-Mario Party 2
-NFL Blitz

I love Mischief Makers! Especially the 3 Villains similar to Team Rocket/The Ginyu Force.
I never was a huge n64 guy since as a kid I skipped it, going from the snes to the gamecube, but one I love to always play is Extreme G
Incredible stuff for a fast paced racing game, especially the music >:)
Cool, I’d definitely heard of Mischief Makers before, knew it was made by Treasure. But didn’t know what it was until just now.
Man Paper Mario was such a fun game. I was so disappointed when the next game in the series I played was Sticker Star for the 3DS.
You never played TTYD? On gamecube? 😮 man you missed out
@@HollowRick Nah. I didn't have a GameCube as a kid
The only other game I would add to the list is HARVEST MOON 64
But I guess the "it's 2D so it aged well" angle would be a bit stale.

Your silly sense of humor and the overall feel of the videos give me good vibes
Glad to hear it! Thanks :)
