So, having binged the entire 90s cartoon series in the last few months, I just want to explain what they were probably going for with Cyclops and Storm. Storm is Claustrophobic, so having stages that are series of narrow tunnels that also restrict her ability to breathe make some sense. And during I believe one of the first Morlock episodes, although I may be wrong on what episode, Cyclops has to go underground, or is taken underground and comments something to the effect of "I won't be much use underground, my power comes from sunlight" and having fallen down a wiki hole for marvel stuff the better part of two years ago, before more recent retcons, Cyclops' power manifested similar to superman's in the sense that his body absorbs sunlight/solar radiation, and concentrates it, before he releases it in the form of optic blasts. So sticking him underground in a mine where he can't recharge makes sense in that respect, though like the game, this virtually never comes up in the series otherwise. It would be pretty lame anyway to just be Cyclops without his optic blasts so I understand it entirely.
You should try Dragons Dogma, if you haven't already. I bet you'd enjoy it. Edit: You can do Command Mission X for a unique RPG. Not exactly "good", but unique.
I frankly wish you'd do other stuff like this more often. Go back and forth, or something. I guess you're bound to run out of final fantasy games eventually, though.
Sad that it wasn't mentioned, but the reason the music is so good is because of legendary composer Tim Follin, who allways went above and beyond composing his soundtrack regardless of the quality of the game. So a lot of kind of mediocre games end up with killer tunes. Often the music of the game becomes more famous than the game itself. If anyone is curious, check out his work with pictionary for the nes, solstice or silver surfer. Haven't played any of them, but the ost is excellent.
I own Solstice. Haven't played much of it, but it seems to be (and I've heard it is) a decent enough game, surprisingly enough. Still an NES game (so kind of hard, kind of cryptic, and I don't think you can save), but I've heard good things. Also, the title theme apparently takes up the majority of the cartridge space lol.
God, i do still miss Jared‘s old „goodbye Summer, hello Winter“ Intro. It was so memorable and charming and even thou a small part, i do find it always kinda heartwarming seeing him hang up his various controllers on the Wall.

The quality of the games themselves, on the other hand, is a different matter entirely. I never played this game, but the gameplay legitimately infuriated me, seeing the crap that Jared had to go through. And yet, I find myself bopping my head to those sweet chuptunes. Case in point... a game that is equally as reviled - the Silver Surfer game on the NES. However, holy crap (!!!) that one track - if you know, you definitely know.
This game might suck but the soundtrack is legendary. The Follin brothers once again created a amazing soundtrack that pushes the limits of the sound-chip
Damn straight. If anyone here hasn't heard the Solstice title theme, go listen to it this instant. It's a pan-galactic gargle blaster of a track. You start out with a pleasant lemony taste at the start, then you get hit over the head with a gold brick about 8-9 seconds in.
People tend to forget about Tim's brother, Geoff Follin. He worked alongside Tim in Plok's ost, Silver Surfer's ost iirc and also made rocking tunes on his own in some nes games.

I'm not even a 90s kid or grew up with these cartoons but that intro still captures the pure joy and excitement I experienced as a kid when I found out that my 2 favourite things are in one product together.
This game......THIS GAME.......is the bane of my childhood. I got this for my birthday one year, and asked for it desperately after seeing it in the store, and I LOVED the Marvel cartoons of the 90s. I spent a FRUSTRATING amount of time to beat this game, and I never got past halfway in most of the levels.
Never heard of it until Jared played it, but it's not a great loss. Watching Jared suffer through 15 videos made me admire his tenacity. I really thought he was going to give up at some point because of how BS it was. Read that it was one of those rushed out for the holiday season games. A bit of a shame since it could have been a decent game if it was given some more polish. It's not really that it's hard. It's just tedious. If they had some continues, a checkpoint system, more lives, and enemies did a little less damage it would have been a lot better.
Wolvies stage was my FAV!! and the music was awesome!! and that laughter just MADE IT THIS was a blockbuster rental money muncher... like an arcade game is made to munch your quarters this was specifically made to take your rental $$$.

Hahaha, amazing intro, perfectly encapsulates the 90's nerd. So happy to decided to review this game. The music for this game was made by Tim Follin. Definitely one of the greatest composers of the 8/16 bit era, but a lot of games he worked on just sucks, unfortunately.
The save file for Daggerfall got corrupted and he wasn't able to recover it, which is why that series ended a bit abruptly. The newest save he was able to load was like 3-4 episodes back.
I had pretty much the exact same experience with this game as a kid. Got it for Christmas or something and loved the opening level. I got to where I would turn it on, play the first level and then turn it off. I still have the game but have not reached a point in my life yet where I want to submit to its tortures to beat it. It is nice to know that I was not the only one.
I just discovered this video. As an older millennial, you unlocked some past trauma I never got over. To this day, I've never beaten Gambit Stage 1 or Wolverine Stage 2

Arcade is hooking them to the murderworld, reading their fears and making a world based on that, I think. So, Storm and Cyclops are possibly claustrophobic (accurate to the comics, for Storm at least). Wolverine could be coulrophobic (fear of clowns) and Gambit may be ludophobic (fear of games). As for Spidey, maybe he's afraid of construction sites. Or, considering he appeared twice, he's actually afraid of Shocker. Kidding aside, I think Spidey's levels weren't based on his fears because Arcade was specifically after the X-Men. Arcade likely had to slap something together quickly in his case to stop him from interfering.

It is so reassuring to see somebody pick up this obscure game and show off how impossible it is. I remember _hating_ it as a kid and this just showed me it was even more ridiculously hard than I remembered.
Watching the AVGN's videos on LJN gives some great retrospective on how they're formula worked. "Oh hey, this game looks fun" *1 hour later* "This Game Is Impossible!"
I was today years old when I found out Storm had a platformer level. Only level I ever beat was Wolverine's because if I remember correctly if you kill enemies without claws they always drop hearts so it's easy to get to the boss with full health
I've always appreciated that the games you review are more often than not ones you have a personal grudge - I mean connection - with! Makes for very good content.
LJN games are always a crapshoot. Sometimes you get a halfway decent game marred by some questionable moments. Other times you get an abomination wrapped in a plastic case.
After watching some of your archived streams of playing through this, this review seems way too concise. Like, it just can't ever accurately convey _how much effort_ went into beating this thing. I mean, I had this as a kid and everything you said was 100% correct and more. It is just one thing beating you down after another, until all enjoyment just evaporates and that first Spider-Man stage feels like a lifetime ago. But man, it was vindicating as hell to see _SOMEONE_ actually make it to the end of this sh**, especially that surprise "screw you!" normal Storm stage. Screw LJN. You are a _legend,_ dude. Really earned the "Pro" in ProJared with this playthrough 😁
Jared I'm so proud of you. You spent a whole two minutes talming about how smooth and responsove Spider-Man felt to control, and you didn't even say the IGN line.
This was one of my first games as a kid with a genesis. I still feel the frustration at watching each one of these levels and I haven’t seen them since like 96
I'm a fanatic about this game. I need to add a few points. In Gambit stage 1,the B item replenishes your cards and reverses the direction of the ball momentarily. In wolverine stage 1, killing Jack in the box without claws gives you a heart! Thanks for making it
"like a shameful conceit, like i had been bested" if my last ps3 haddnt been bricked due to my negligence, id still have a save from dark souls from my first pyromancer, i had managed to get a black knight sword (rare drop) and the stats to wield it and pretty much nothing else, not even the bottomless box. for some reason, the increase in my DPS lead me to believe that i could take on all those skeletons at firelink shrine. not only did i do that but also beat pinwheel after two, "i bet i can make that jump" that amazing failed to end in my death. however i did sit at the bonfire (with no lordvessel and therefore no warp) not a single necromancer killed. i never did managed to get even halfway back up on that save, despite having beaten the game 7 times since then
Oh man, what a piece from my childhood here... This brought back both wonderful--and painful--memories, Jared. I have to admit, this is one I wanted to suggest for Jirard, but I don't want to be that mean. Thank you for doing what my brother and I could never accomplish as kids.
Watching you play that game to the very end legitimately was amazing, and I'm glad you made this video to remind us just how much you suffered playing that. Congrats on beatings that disaster of a game!
Same. When he started off so positive talking about Spidermans controls and praising the spidey sense collection quest in the intro I was readily expecting a PSYCH followed by a rant about how it all sucked.
The Storm swimming levels are a haunting reminder of LJN's Wolverine. I kinda love that game, only due to the specific nostalgia I have attached to it....but... FUCK the swimming level.

Damn, Final Fantasy XII is different than I remember...
That intro was the equivalent of a kid in the 90s hyped on sugary cereal, i love it
Watching the AVGN's videos on LJN gives some great retrospective on how they're formula worked.
"Oh hey, this game looks fun" *1 hour later* "This Game Is Impossible!"
AVGN sucks.
He's been accused of plagiarism.
I was today years old when I found out Storm had a platformer level.
Only level I ever beat was Wolverine's because if I remember correctly if you kill enemies without claws they always drop hearts so it's easy to get to the boss with full health
Same story with me. Also Wolverine's heal ability when standing still
Pro Jared is epic
I like gambits occupation at 3:07 it says "occupation-adventurer" I'm going to have to use that in real life.
Babe wake up projared uploaded
I've always appreciated that the games you review are more often than not ones you have a personal grudge - I mean connection - with! Makes for very good content.
Keep up the great content
The moment I spotted that finger placement in the intro I had a feeling I knew what was coming...
LJN was truly the king of terrible publishers. The _only_ game that was good from them was Spiderman & Venom: Maximum Carnage.
I wouldn't call that game "good" so much as "nearly playable", which from them was amazingly high quality.
That intro guitar lick was fukken siiiick, always pumped me up as a kid 🤘🤘
Love this awful game
Jared I'm so proud of you.
You spent a whole two minutes talming about how smooth and responsove Spider-Man felt to control, and you didn't even say the IGN line.
The exaggerated swagger of a black teen
@@theskyrax670 No the other IGN line.
@@douglewis7946 "This game really makes you feel like spider man"
@@theskyrax670 THAAAAT's the one!
This was one of my first games as a kid with a genesis. I still feel the frustration at watching each one of these levels and I haven’t seen them since like 96
"Listen to the hi-hat!!"
Ride cymbal plays.
I always welcome a new video in the classic ProJared style! Still holding out hope for D&December 2021 too
TH-cam: "It's important to grab viewers' attention within 20 seconds"
Jared:
I love that Avgn has turned the entire internet against ljn
The sound of their death is forever ingrained in my head now. OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH
the death yell sound like a grown up version of the one in solstice from the nes
I'm a fanatic about this game. I need to add a few points. In Gambit stage 1,the B item replenishes your cards and reverses the direction of the ball momentarily. In wolverine stage 1, killing Jack in the box without claws gives you a heart! Thanks for making it
20:08, Spider-Man out here hanging from Uncle Ben
I loved the slow LJN reveal in the intro.
"like a shameful conceit, like i had been bested"
if my last ps3 haddnt been bricked due to my negligence, id still have a save from dark souls from my first pyromancer, i had managed to get a black knight sword (rare drop) and the stats to wield it and pretty much nothing else, not even the bottomless box.
for some reason, the increase in my DPS lead me to believe that i could take on all those skeletons at firelink shrine.
not only did i do that but also beat pinwheel after two, "i bet i can make that jump" that amazing failed to end in my death.
however i did sit at the bonfire (with no lordvessel and therefore no warp) not a single necromancer killed.
i never did managed to get even halfway back up on that save, despite having beaten the game 7 times since then
Oh man, what a piece from my childhood here... This brought back both wonderful--and painful--memories, Jared. I have to admit, this is one I wanted to suggest for Jirard, but I don't want to be that mean. Thank you for doing what my brother and I could never accomplish as kids.
Man this video takes me back to 2015 watching projared, I love both new and old projared videos so this was so fun to watch!
9:15 I can definitely hear Jared's dying of laughter from being collapsed from the rocky platform
Watching you play that game to the very end legitimately was amazing, and I'm glad you made this video to remind us just how much you suffered playing that. Congrats on beatings that disaster of a game!
I havnt watched all of your videos, but more than a few. This was probably my favorite one. You obviously had a good time making this
He streams a lot of these games on Twitch when he's preparing the video if you're interested.
Yes! Classic Jared review. Love this content. Makes me want to go back and re-watch all the old ones.
After having watched your playthrough of this game, you have far more positive things to say about it here than I *ever* would have expected.
Same. When he started off so positive talking about Spidermans controls and praising the spidey sense collection quest in the intro I was readily expecting a PSYCH followed by a rant about how it all sucked.
With LJN, the AVGN comparisons are unavoidable. Great video!
The Storm swimming levels are a haunting reminder of LJN's Wolverine. I kinda love that game, only due to the specific nostalgia I have attached to it....but... FUCK the swimming level.
