During Canton’s time as Johnson County Sheriff, he sent over a dozen men to prison - mostly for horse theft - and even executed a murderer. He wasn’t very trigger happy, though. Frank was a tough, intimidating lawman who was happy to let his reputations speak for him. But why did he soon lose the support of the people? And what happened when Frank and his WSGA buddies decided to take the law into their own hands?

Bravo! Another superb episode. Owen Wister was hosted by the cattle growers when he went to Wyoming. Paradoxically, though, his model for "the Virginian" was said to be Jack Flagg, a native West Virginian who was a leader of the local cowboy strike, which was a prelude to the Johnson County War in which Flagg was one of the leaders and its first historian. A wonderful, if rather depressing chapter in the history of the West.

Love you show as always. Could you do all of us a favor? Rev. De Smet was one of the toughest men in the West. This guy beat up a bear that attacked him, stomped nearly to death an Indian chief, and did a bunch of other heroics. In short De Smet was a clerical badass. Josh again could you PLEASE do a show on Padre De Smet?

I have never of this guy before nor of some of those others you mentioned. I can't speculate on why Canton went out at night other than to say that's when the criminals were most active and that Canton was conducting some illegitimate business. Wearing dark glasses during times when the sun isn't shining indicates a guilty conscience--I don't know whether that's relevant or not to this story. Weird goings on in the Wild West.
