These types of videos are some of my favorites. It's always nice to reminded of some forgotten classics or even decent games that are worth giving a couple minutes for a new experience.
ah yes parents. Everything is nintendo. My parents were pretty solid biggest problem I had was that damn ESRB system folks would get the titles right but wouldn't buy me M rated titles
One Genesis game that i absolute loved as a kid was Talmit's Adventure AKA Marvel Land. It's by no means mind blowing but it was a perfectly fine and really fun platform game with tons of charm :)
Bio Hazard is one of the most underrated Shooter on the Genesis, it was the first game I purchased with my own money and loved it every second, tough as nails.
And something that I love about FIGTHING MASTER is that they achieved a fighting game with 12 playable characters with only a 4 Megabit cartridge, all with spirtes of attacks and poses ... The truth is that it is not a masterpiece but it is very complete compared to others who used 8 or 16 mg.
Two of my childhood favorite Genesis games that no one talks about are Animaniacs and Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure. Both are pretty cheap as well, even in today's ridiculous market.
You know what kills me? The Genesis originally was supposed to have the superscaler hardware but they decided to cut it out. It hurts like a knife, kind of like how the SID chip on the C64 was originally supposed to have like 33 channels but due to time constraints they cut it down to three channels. Both of those things would have improved gaming at home 100 times over!
I recently purchased Dj boy as I remembered renting it as a kid. I actually still enjoy it, probably the nostalgia talking. The difficulty level is a bit strange but once you get the powerups it becomes much easier
I bought it a couple of years ago and still quite like it, too. But I have the Japanese version, which does not censor the offensive stereotypes of some of the characters and (I'm told) has various other differences. I actually didn't have too much trouble beating the game, so I am guessing it must also be somewhat easier than the western version.
@@samhillier9607 I bought the japanese version too so that might explain the differences. I know what you mean about the stereotypes, probably wouldnt fly in 2021!
@@darylmoffat8057 I have the US version but I think the Japanese version is much easier if I recall correctly but I beat te US version that SLX was struggling so much with in the video. It’s a fun game, I used to play it in the arcade before it was ported to the Mega Drive/Genesis.
Very interesting episode. Growing up as a MD/Genesis owner, I remember renting many of these. I get a weird nostalgia for some and because of that fondness, they kind of ended up in the "so bad it is good" category for me; namely Fighting Masters and Street Smart, but also Beast Wrestler (not shown in this video). Thaks for rekindling those memories! Also something interesting I remembered: Insector X was originally a "Cute 'em up" on the arcades and PCE Engine (I think it got ported there anyway), but got a major visual reskin on the Megadrive, and we ended up with the high tech bug things.
Well, I did see it on some lists. And one of my friends is absolutely fanatic about it (and I am the Sega expert of my group), so much that he insisted that we play it and beat it... And we did. I do remember renting it back in the day, with another friend. To be honest, I didn't find it much entertaining or attractive.
@@teknomax7883 I have never seen another beat'em up focused on grappling like MF, honestly. Specially for its time. I come to back to it every now and then because it's just so much fun to throw enemies around in many different ways

Talespin is a decent game. I hadn't played it for ages and had a go at it a few weeks ago and I never had any real issues with it. The pyramid level inside the tomb is probably the only section I get lost in but other than that, I think it's a pretty decent Sega of America title. Insector X is one of my favourite shooters and I can't seem to find a copy of it anywhere, it must have been in a low print run or something back in the day because it is very rare.
I was hoping you would cover "Crusader of Centy" (or "Soleil" as it is known in europe), one of the best Genesis games that never got a re-release. Maybe in another episode? ;-)
Desert Demolition was awesome, even better than Sylvester and Tweety Cagey Capers in some ways. Both were great games though, each in their own way. I find that playing as Wile E. was much more interesting in Desert Demolition than playing as Road Runner.
Yeah it was hard, but it was hella kool! I know it's not easy like some japanese version of games but Dj boy is awesome. It had a great soundtrack imo. People forget that coming from NES and SMS ... The graphics on the Genesis are far superior. And Dj boy to me was awesome in that regard.
A feature on Bitmap Bros Megadrive games would be good e.g. Speedball 2, Gods, The Chaos Engine. All were ports from the Amiga, which wasn't well known in the US.
Fighting masters is a bit weird game, but I've played the hell of it back on the day! It was the only versus fighting game I had back in the day so i had to play it lol
BTW the first system i ever played was the vectrex, my uncle was one of the first ones to have it. That got me started in video games, as you mentioned you've been playing over 40 yrs. As I'm 46 now, time fly's when your having fun
I am a retro gamer as well. Dating back to the 70's with my old Pong machine and my Atari 2600. Then my 5200. Finally I found and received the Nintendo NES for Christmas. I was in AWE. But with everything especially video games, things change, expand, grow, etc. The Vectrex system was such a wild and unique concept. I really wanted one, but I had already dropped a LOT of money on games. Sadly I never even got to own one. I THINK I tried one at a local gaming store called Babbages. Back in the 80's and 90's, they were in Shopping Malls. Anyway it had a simplistic look but it was extremely wild looking when you played it. I have seen "reviews" or footage of games so I am fully aware now of it's capabilities which are awesome! It was like a mini arcade machine. While I did feel bummed I never had one, I owned a crapload of systems and games. Nintendo NES, Super-NES, N64, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis & CD, Sega Nomad, Saturn, Dreamcast, TurboGraphx-16, Commodore Vic-20, Commodore-64, 🍎Apple IIe🍎, and eventually a IBM or that type. Yes I have a problem..lol. Now I've gotten into the "Minis" and I LOVE THEM! However I really want to get back to the actual systems from the 80's and 90's. The Minis are great but I want the REAL GAMES! And maybe if some miracle happens I can find a old working Vectrex someday? Crossing my fingers. 🤞
I smell a viewer edition coming on. Cyborg Justice, Mystic Defender, Warrior of Rome 2, Centurion Defender of Rome, and Namco's sublime Power Ball could help fill the episode. Great work as always SLX. I have thoroughly enjoyed tearing through your channel the last couple of months recollecting Sega's glorious and not so glorious days. A man who's hand I'd be privileged to shake one day🙏
I really loved that game. Being able to build your own Borg and pull opponents to bits was hugely entertaining. It wasn't the prettiest game and the sound wasn't perfect but I know my friends and I enjoyed it immensely.
I remembered almost all of those covers and only half of the games. They were all over the game rental stores when I was a kid, and they had them in Japanese, American and pirate flavors. We played Fighting Masters a lot, dreaming of a home version of Street Fighter for our Mega Drive. Super Volleyball was also a hit among the condo kids.
‘Zero Tolerance’ was an awesome 1st person shooter on the mega drive. Tiny, tiny screen but ridiculously high body count and really addictive once you get into it.
Oh boy, I was so happy with Insector X not being a parody like its brothers for Arcade and Famicom. As of today, it remains as one of my favorite 16-bits shooters.
Admittedly, I had to revisit Fighting Masters a few years later to develop an appreciation for it but this is literally the only time I've ever heard a TH-camr praise it.
I actually owned and played INSECTOR X on the Genesis a lot back in the day. Great game! Years later I got the TAITO LEGENDS collection on the PS2 and was surprised that the American release was much cooler! The sprites were given a hardcore Sci-Fi theme while the original had kind of a rather goofy theme. This makes the original American release of INSECTOR X my version of choice!
I had Street Smart & Fighting Masters for the Genesis and played the hell out of those games. I never had DJ Boy but I enjoyed it in the arcades. While I wouldn't play these games these days, I really enjoy hearing them talked about and seeing videos of them for nostalgia. It's nice to see these forgotten games get some spotlight. It reminds me of the countless hours I pumped into them back in the pre-SF2 days.
Great trip down memory lane! As your closing monologue depicts, even the games that proved less-than were fun to take another look at. Reminds me of where I was back in the day, and the complete culture of those 80s and 90s days of yesteryear. Thanks as always for your great work!
I wasn't what you'd call a Sega kid back in the day. I had a megadrive but only ever had Sonic 1 and Ecco 2 for it and some other game I traded the latter for that I didnt enjoy. It was only with the PS1 that I discovered how much I loved video games. But over the years, especially through Genesis Collections, emulation and your videos, I have grown a great fondness for Sega in their heyday. I do really enjoy your enthusiasm and honesty when you talk about stuff like this. Keep it up!
DJ Boy was a game I played at my local fish and chip shop in the early 90's on a Arcade machine, I then rented the Mega Drive port about a year later from a video store.. Memories tell me I liked the Mega Drive version because I thought it was so like the Arcade game I played but going back to both versions in the last 10 years made me realise that that was just nostalgia talking.
Pigskin: Footbrawl. My only football/rugby game I've ever owned, when i sold my old systems at a retro gaming store in 2013 they had no record of the game in their system and gave me extra for it. Game plays as a horizontal sport game loosely based on both before-mentioned, weapons on field to kill other players that resurrect after every point and obstacles on the field, ridiculously easy, but a lot of fun for a 15-20 minute play
Loving all the great content you are putting out recently Sega Lord X! I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s and had an NES, SNES, and finally, an N64 so I missed out on all cool Genesis, Saturn, and Playstation 1 games of that time. Thankfully I’ve been able through collecting and emulation to play a lot of the games I missed. (I remember being sooooo jealous when I was like 12 or 13 that the Genesis was getting an “X-Men” game! I was a huge X-Men fan growing up and that just made my pre-teen self so salty, lol!). I’ve become a big fan of the Saturn (especially its RPG’s) since then and your videos have let me know about a lot of games I otherwise would have missed! Thank you again for the awesome videos!!!!
I was trying to remember VJ Boy my entire life! The last time I saw it was when it first came out (my older brothers rented it from Blockbuster I think). Thank you SegaLordX!
Ha! I noticed you showed fighting masters in your opening vid, a greatly underappreciated, and very good fighting game. Atomic robo kid is another one I just recently got into, thanks for the great vid again!
It’s funny, my brothers and I had a lot of these games growing up. Seems like streetsmart we loved but we also loved it in the arcade and Insector X was another one that I remember being fond of.
DJ Boy was the first game to give me a genuine nightmare. The first I saw was in the arcade section at a skating rink (damn that makes me feel old). The boss of the second stage is the pumped up Chippendale dancer that moves around with this real weird strut. That night, the next night, and the night after, I had funky dreams of that weirdo chasing me down with that strut. The thought of it haunted me for like a year.
OMG DJ Boy! I rented it a few times when i was a kid and loved it. I tried playing it later when i was much older in emulators... but i didn't remember the game's name! I went through a lot of ROMs lists and never found it. Thank you for this! Also from your list i absolutely loved Super Voleyball, it's definitely one of the games i played the most.I had this game and me and my brother had some real epic battles back in the day. Single player was a decent enough challenge too.
Super Volley ball was AWESOME! There were "secret" moves that would make a difference! If you EVER played Volleyball you would see that the moves could be done with button combinations and it was comprehensive. Get 2 players that knew what they were doing and you had a thrilling match! Underated gem
I agree. There’s a way to serve a spike that makes the ball go up really high and come back zigzagging that’s almost impossible for the opponent to receive/defend. Also, all teams do not play the same and they get harder when advancing in the tournament. Many TH-camrs play the games for 5 minutes or just beat the first stage to make a video and for people who played it’s clear when they’re aren’t familiar with the game.
I agree, I played it so much back in the day with my friends! I came here to talk about the move that made the ball go up out of the screen but got beat to it :)
Hello! It was one of my favorite games around 30years ago! But not this version on MegaDrive,i play the arcade version. It was the same name. Insector X and very similar to the MegaDrive.. Still playing today whit emulators
Fighting Masters was actually a pretty fun rental back in the day. It was no Street Fighter II but it was interesting. That awesome temple stage BGM has been stuck in my head for years - to the point where I learned to play it on my keyboard! Grinder was my favorite character. The same team went on to create it's spiritual successor: Cosmic Carnage on the 32X. You all know how that turned out...😬
I know Talespin is bad but it’s a bit harsh comparing it to Fantasia. There is some fun to be had there and some of the music is pretty good. It does however remain one of the very few games I’ve played that is actually impossible to finish on the hardest difficulty, all because of bad design.
Fighting Masters thank you for naming that game for me I remember renting it out all the time when the newer releases were all gone but had since forgotten the title. As a kid it was perfect for me it was a fighter, had moves similar to wrestling which was my jam and was weird. Looking at your video I can say now it also didn't move half bad either.
I loved games like Championship Pro-Am back in the early-mid 90s. My favorite was Super Skidmarks on the SEGA MegaDrive. Nobody ever talks about it because it didn't come out in the USA.
Oh, man! Fighting Master arrived in Brazil years after Street Fighter 2 SCE, so imagine how bad it was received (to the point: the slow pace, slower motion at any hit was unbearable). But Super Volleyball was the opposite: one of the first titles, with lots of fun and SPECIAL MOVES: thunder services, asteroid-like rebounds, deflective second-balls, wall-like blocks... . If two players compete each other with this repertoire, the match could last hours, in a way that towards to... idk... Dragon Ball Z?! It was a crazy game (remember, at first you have think it's a plane vanilla sports game) down there at the beginning of Genesis/Mega drive live. Thanks for (once again) bring back those kimd of memories, @SegaLordX
Just got my PS5 today, retail price right though sony. But always happy to hear you talk genesis! I may have played street smart in like, 1990. There is a game in my memory that was sort of like double dragon but bigger sprites and one on one fights. You fought a big dude and the hugeness blew my mind at the time. It's tough to be 100 percent sure, but I think that was it. I wish there were records kept of what games the Tilt arcade had around 1990, haha
It never failed to amuse me just how much all of the characters weighed, the sound they made when they hit the walls and floor, like solid blocks of titanium.
"What in the holy hell were the developers thinking?" 🤣 It's a shame though, because the look of the game is pleasant, and the artistic touches of the boss and the cable car lady make it clear that someone cared what they were doing. On another note, is the "Sega" vocal (not the music from Astal but the actual word "Sega") from a game, or was it made just for this channel? It is really effective at capturing some of the nostalgia that old Sega games bring up.
I always liked Talespin as a kid, I do remember it being really difficult though. I had it along with Quackshot, Taz Mania, World of Illusion and Sonic... I don't think I could have asked for better when I was 5 years old.
I feel one of my favorite obscure Genesis games I own that was never acknowledged is Granada X (I also emulated the original Sharp X68000 port). A fairly competent top down shooter with a tank and some interesting yet simple controls and satellite add ons. Nothing crazy, but close to me like Faceball, Strike Gunners, Earth Defense Force and other retro shmups I grew up with nobody heard of.
Back in the day, I found a fully boxed copy of TaleSpin lying in the middle of the street.
You didnt find it in the tale bin?
Hopefully you left it there

Something different is always good, in my book. Just make sure there’s plenty of Saturn episodes :)
Okay, I never noticed this before, but shoutout to the Rabio Lepus ad in the background of Super Volleyball. A very quirky PC Engine shmup.
Besides the football game I remembered all of the other games. XD and I love fighting masters
Hah a Police Semi in Chase HQ 2. That is amazing.
I played Insector X in an arcade-made Genesis years ago. I first thought it was a Neo Geo game.
Game was great imo
DJ Boy was a game I played at my local fish and chip shop in the early 90's on a Arcade machine, I then rented the Mega Drive port about a year later from a video store.. Memories tell me I liked the Mega Drive version because I thought it was so like the Arcade game I played but going back to both versions in the last 10 years made me realise that that was just nostalgia talking.
If you do a part 2 you should include Trampoline Terror!
Can't sleep.
Great timing Lord X👍 with the late night🔥
Hello ! My friend ! I have sent you some Ambien and some Pizza Rolls in the mail. Here's hoping it helps you sleepy. You must eat the pizza rolls !
I would love you to talk about Atomic Runner, Mega Turrican and Empire of Steel.
I remember playing Atomic Robo Kid for the Amiga... The framerate was terrible but the soundtrack was awesome! :D
I loved rc pro am,international volleyball and chase hq as a kid!
I was trying to remember VJ Boy my entire life! The last time I saw it was when it first came out (my older brothers rented it from Blockbuster I think). Thank you SegaLordX!
As a kid back then I had fun with Fighting Masters on my mega drive
I loved jewel master. A game thst rarely gets talked about. It's dated now but brought me so much fun as a kid.
I loved playing fighting Masters as a kid. I remember spending hours playing it against my brother and cousins.😀🕹🎮
Now it's official.
Sega Lord X is simply one of the best content creators on TH-cam by my point of view.
Cheers.
Why nobody talks about Battle Mania aka Trouble Shooter and sequel? Same with El Viento. True hidden gems in genesis library.
Insector X was my J A M back in the day
Still have that game and play it. What I always found odd was that it's a reskin of another shmup that in Japan was a cute em up.
@@buckroger6456
Which one. I'd like to see it to compare.
@@kekeke8988 it was called Taito Legends 2
You all know how that turned out...😬
every time I hear the SOR intro song I feel like I am reborn again....28 years later
I know Talespin is bad but it’s a bit harsh comparing it to Fantasia. There is some fun to be had there and some of the music is pretty good.
It does however remain one of the very few games I’ve played that is actually impossible to finish on the hardest difficulty, all because of bad design.
Guilty pleasure time - Mick and Mack Global Gladiators and Rolo to the Rescue 👍👍
Pro Am was one of my first Genesis games. Many sunk into it. Still have yet to beat it.
I still have a soft spot for Dj boy. I remember renting this back on 1991.
I put it in my sega mini, and still beat it!
I loved games like Championship Pro-Am back in the early-mid 90s.
My favorite was Super Skidmarks on the SEGA MegaDrive.
Nobody ever talks about it because it didn't come out in the USA.
Great vid. Was just playing Championship Pro-am and Cyberball on the old Genesis recently 👍
A driving game I enjoyed back in the day was Outrun 2019.
I love outlander
Gotta love the Street Smart box art and that font, wowza!
Is that takuma sakazaki in street smart 3:55
It's a generic karate fighter but considering that it is a SNK game, he could be easily be Takuma in his younger days.
Finally!!!! Fighting Masters 😂
I actually had fun with this one
Super Volleyball. Man, i'm play this one a lot. Fun fact, some real moves turn to "special moves", like super service or a flash atack. Lots of fun.
5:04 Good review on Fighting Masters. Stun n' Grab is a good way to describe it. I had lots of fun beating the crap out of this game.
It never failed to amuse me just how much all of the characters weighed, the sound they made when they hit the walls and floor, like solid blocks of titanium.
13:09 You are under arrest for causing road stuttering and jerky sprite scaling
"What in the holy hell were the developers thinking?" 🤣
It's a shame though, because the look of the game is pleasant, and the artistic touches of the boss and the cable car lady make it clear that someone cared what they were doing.
On another note, is the "Sega" vocal (not the music from Astal but the actual word "Sega") from a game, or was it made just for this channel? It is really effective at capturing some of the nostalgia that old Sega games bring up.
Two players definitely makes any game fun and worth a try.
I always liked Talespin as a kid, I do remember it being really difficult though. I had it along with Quackshot, Taz Mania, World of Illusion and Sonic... I don't think I could have asked for better when I was 5 years old.
Jewel Master needs a mention just for its amazing soundtrack!
Pretty decent game too
@@johnquist9069 Defo!
I frikkin loved its backgrounds too
I feel one of my favorite obscure Genesis games I own that was never acknowledged is Granada X (I also emulated the original Sharp X68000 port). A fairly competent top down shooter with a tank and some interesting yet simple controls and satellite add ons. Nothing crazy, but close to me like Faceball, Strike Gunners, Earth Defense Force and other retro shmups I grew up with nobody heard of.
