Just got it used for $250 and it came with an i7 8750H, GTX 1050Ti, 8GB RAM single channel, 128GB Sata SSD M2. I upgraded to dual channel 16GB RAM and I have a 1TB Samsung 980 NVME SSD that I'm about to put windows 10 on.
I picked buying up in 2019 not for gaming but for video graphic editing. Dell - G5 5587 15.6" Gaming Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6GB Max-Q - 1TB + 256GB m2 SSD. My up grades 32GB Memory - swop old drive 1TB SSD + 1TB m2 SSD It does what i need
how to upgrade to 32GB? I have 16GB and find it slow on video editing or maybe I have some settings needed to change for editing? I am using Premier pro
I have the same model, except with the 1050TI video card. I had to replace the memory, the keyboard and power supply in its second year (out of warranty) and so when the battery life dropped to 5 minutes I thought enough with all this and bought a new laptop. Sadly the new laptop only lasted 16 months (Asus not so tuf) so I came back to the G5 again. I had to replace the battery to use it for work, as we often get power outages, and am now thinking about upgrading memory and the 128GB C drive, as most of the cheap laptops have far worse video performance and not much better CPU than this one. Anyway, thanks for the video guide, it looks much easier than I imagined.
I got this laptop a few years ago, like 4-6 years ago. Back when I got it, it use to run super smoothly with almost no issues present period. But even though it ran super well, one day it got a bluescreen and since that day, it has never ran the same. I don't know what's wrong with it, I've done so many tweaks trying to fix it and I have never accomplished anything with it. It honestly runs like a piece of crap even though it has a super nice setup to it. This huge drop in performance only comes with gaming, it runs well doing anything else.
same. but the fix for me was Reinstalling Windows Entirely, Graphic Card Issues and HDD drive Failure. so yea. Don't Update drivers if everything works, just leave them be.
I had the issue of it running super slow, I took the thing apart and replaced the thermal paste, runs like a brand new computer. Mine would do the same thing, fine til i gamed and then it would crap the bed. I think if you replace the thermal paste you would be surprised!
Was looking for RAM upgrade options and found your video.. I'm still running my 5587 (i7, 1060, 16GB version). Got it when they first released it, so I've had it a few years now and it's been a great workhorse. I love the ability to change/upgrade parts on it (not a given these days), it was one of the reasons I picked it. I put Windows 11 on it when it came out in beta, works great. The hard drives that came with it were pretty slow, so I recently upgraded them for a WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB M.2, and a Samsung 870 EVO 4TB SATA. So now it is much faster with 8TB of storage. I'm thinking of upgrading the RAM, but I'm not sure if it goes above 32GB. The manual only shows RAM combinations up to 32GB @ 2666Mhz. So is that just the combinations it could be shipped with from the factory, or is that the actual hardware limitations of the board as a whole? I'm just wondering if it can go 64GB+ and/or higher speed RAM. 2 things I don't like about it though: The built in screen is awful, very dim and poor quality. I use external screens, so it doesn't bother me. And it runs hot! I have to have it on a laptop cooler if I'm doing any heavy video editing or gaming. Although, with the age, it could be the thermal paste has degraded and needs re-applying.
My Dell G5 1587 came with a 256Gb 2230 SSD which had a copper mounting plate that I suppose is also being used as a heat sink. Unfortunately that plate can not be used with the full length 2280 replacement SSD. What do you recommend for a heat sink for the 2280 NVME?
You can either back up your existing drive beforehand (using Time Machine), or you can use a usb/sata adapter afterwards and copy the files to your new drive (as long as your drive wasn’t encrypted)
does your laptop come with fingerprint on power button? mine have same model but doesn't come with fingerprint and i am thinking to purchase the module fingerprint board and add it myself. What do you think? i need to know first the model of fingerprint module board.
The fingerprint power button only came with certain models, same with the backlit keyboard. They are nice to have features, but I never use the fingerprint reader.
You ask about possible upgrades. How about a back-lit keyboard, pending the motherboard has the connector for it. Dell is good about having that option available. For less than $25 it is a nice feature. I have added it to several dell laptops.
Can this Dell take 2 * 16GB RAM? I'm swapping my M.2 disk for a Samsung NVME (SSD980) and if it runs smoothly (and faster) then I plan to change the HDD to an SSD and if possible I'd like to swap my 2 * 8GB to 2 * 16. It runs OK on 16GB RAM most of the time but I have a second monitor that I'm running at UHD and the machine runs out of overhead. I think some breathing room on the NVME will help (fast and large swap drives) but I'd like to get more RAM as long as I plan on using this machine daily for a few more years.
Hey! I have the same laptop with an i7 8750H. Just upgraded both m.2 and sata to SSDs and bought a new battery for it bc the original one lasts half as it should and is starting to puff. A couple years ago I also did a keyboard replacement bc some keys stopped working (seemed to be a dell issue), but it's all good now I was thinking if I should do any driver update though: there's no support for this anymore, so would it be worth it to risk to update the bios or other stuff?
Is there any way to upgrade its graphics card? I’m considering just buying a new desktop with some of the latest specs in it, but people are telling me I should see if I can upgrade my laptop (the one you are working on) before I lay $1000+ on a desktop.
Thanks for this amazing video. Can I take the 2x16gb ram of "G.Skill Ripjaws SO-DIMM Series 16GB" and replace it with the existing ones that are 2x8gb ram? or do you have brand recommendation to make my computer 32 gm ram
Yes, you will have more overall system memory, but your dual channel memory will still be 16gb. Overall its still worth it if it doesn't cost you much, or you already have the other memory laying around.
Im looking to overhual mine right now. And was wonder if it would be ok to run 1tb ssd like the one in this video, and replace the hdd with a 2tb sata ssd and swap the memory to 2x 16gb 2666? The laptop is used 90% of the time for gaming and maybe 10% for video editing and 3d modeling cars, race tracks and stuff for 3d printing. 1 game in particular i play is a bit too heavy on memory and doesnt like mechanical drives. (Boot up warns me before playing that I'll get performance drops from it) and my other main game i had to move to an external hard drive temporarily as the file size is now 1.2tb 😅
I recently ordered one from ebay I like working with older computers... Glad you made this video so if I need any info working on the inside
Awesome! Good luck with your new laptop!

Sounds like you got a good deal! And your upgrades will surely help out. Thanks for watching!
Can the GPU be upgraded?
thanks for this, excellent video
You’re very welcome. Thanks for watching!

It does what i need
Yeah, I’m sure it handles just about anything! Nice specs. And thanks for watching.

what about the highest frequence of ram can we put on it?

You mentioned creating a bootable usb to install windows in another video? Can you point to where that video is? or how to do that?
How to change the speed of ram in this bios

do you know it can hold up to 32gb of ram?
I have a 1TB M.2 as my C drive. I’ve also swapped the HDD for a SSD however windows does not recognize the SSD, is there a reason for this?
Does your sound work? please is it possible to send me Your current driver files... tried everything possible and Audio still not working

WiFi 6 card compatible?
If I will change the SSD on Drive C, how do I transfer the data on the current SSD?

Hi, I've acquired this laptop from a second market. For my surprise the BIOS version is 1.3.0. Do you suggest to upgrade it to the last from 2022?
It’s almost always a good idea to keep your bios updated to the latest.
Can this Dell take 2 * 16GB RAM? Yes, according to Dell’s spec sheet, the 5587 will accept up to 2 modules of 16gb 2666Mhz ram, totaling 32gb. Thanks for watching!
What is the max you can put on the M.2 and the max of the 2.5 drives?
I have 4TB on each. Works fine.
Can you put 2 x 16gb in this? I have same laptop.
Yes, you can use a 2x16gb 2666Mhz kit in this laptop. Thanks for watching!

I would think it would be safe to update to whatever the latest drivers on Dell’s website are.
@@FamilyGeekery ok I will! What's the worst that can happen though? Thank you!!!
Cool video
Thank you. And thanks for watching!

You could use a eGPU, but you probably can’t upgrade the internal gpu.
