I put the 1tb into the 2nd slot, cloned everything from the 250gb it came with then just replaced it in the first slot and added a 2nd 1tb and went from 250gb to 2TB! Also upgraded ram from 2x4gb ddr to 2x16gb ddr4. I do like how these gaming laptops are super upgrade friendly!
Thanks so much for this video. I have a 5 year old G5 5587 and the 256GB M.2 SATA drive which has Windows 10 on it nearly full. I wanted and upgrade and wasn't sure if I could replace this laptop with a M2 NVME 1TB drive. Thanks for the guide! Followed this guide to the letter (disconnected the battery first before replacing the SSD tho) and everything worked perfectly! Hopefully i can get a few more years out of my G5 now.
The boot trouble seemed to be to be the BIOS reconfiguring itself (for the new drive type) but not in time to boot correctly the first time you tried. I didn't watch the video closely so I missed it if you went in to the BIOS to change the drive type before attempting first boot with the new drive. Some BIOS firmware can just be set in autodetect mode. Even from the factory.
I tried upgrading to a Samsung 970 plus 2TB M2 NVME from a 1TB drive. The migration worked fine and it booted fine after but I kept getting random error messages in Win10 and a couple of blue screen crashes. I tried another 2TB M2 NVME (WD SN770) and experienced similar issues. Went back to the 1TB drive and everything is fine. I thought maybe it was a limitation of the G15 5587 since it only mentions 1TB in the documentation. However it sounds like others have had some success with 2TB....
Great video. My computer won't recognize the drive. Everything you did is the same I did. Same computer, SSD and even the enclosure. I tried Macrium and the Samsung software but get no bootable media found when I swap the drives.
If the Samsung and macrium software can see the new drive, the computer can see the drive. The issue you're having is after swapping the new drive into the computer the computer doesn't see how to boot up to windows. What you might want to look for when you put the original drive back in to try again is to make sure the drive is not encrypted. That can throw off the cloning process. So if it is encrypted set encrypted to off and then try the cloning process again.
@@MichaelTheComputerGuy I checked on the encryption and it wasn't on. Do you think it could be the lack of a driver since it was a SATA drive that came out?

I got a 970 EVO plus (500GB) and a USB adapter (not same model as yours) to clone the drive, but neither the samsung migration software, nor samsung magician, will recognize the SSD as a samsung device. @@xXxjrxXx123 It looks like that laptop has space for a 2.5 inch drive and a m.2 drive. If you currently have a 250gb SSD it's probably in the m.2 slot. What you can do to replace that is get yourself another m.2 solid state drive, whatever capacity you like and connect it to the computer through a USB to m.2 NVME adapter. Search on Amazon for USB to m.2 NVME and you'll find one. That will get the new m.2 connected to the computer through USB. You would then use the Samsung migration software which you can get for free, Google it, to clone everything on the 250 GB solid state drive to the new m.2. once that's done you would replace the existing 250 GB m.2 with the new one that you just transferred the data over to. My laptop is too thin to make an m.2 fit with a heat sink, and the current 128gb m.2 in my laptop does not have a heat sink. Now my question is; Does a 2tb m.2 ssd run too hot to use without a heatsink in a laptop? Should I be looking at a smaller m.2 that runs less hot? Or is the heat of a 2tb m.2 not going to be a problem for a laptop? Thank in advance to any who answer!
How long does it take to clone ?
It depends on how much data there is and the speed of the slowest device. Typically going from a hard drive to a solid-state drive with say 50 GB of data to be copied it would be done and maybe 20 minutes.
where did u learn how to open packages?
also its better to have OS and games on seperate drives..it just runs better that way
I got my 4 year degree in opening packages at the University of the United States. Reply if you get the reference without looking it up.

can i use this migration program with dfferent brand of hard drive? say crucial
The Samsung migration software only works for migrating or cloning to a Samsung ssd.
can this data migiration work with cloning the d drive? I recently bought a 870 evo 4tb samasung SSD to replace the 2.5 " HDD drive in my g5 15.6" 5587. someone please answer im new to all of this.
I don't think the Samsung migration software will allow you to to clone a drive other than the C drive. I have other videos here on the site showing other cloning software. One that uses macrium reflect would be the way to go.
Hi would this be the same for a Dell vostro 3470 desktop ?
Which part?
@@MichaelTheComputerGuy i want to do all what you did , my c-drive is full i need to change to a bigger drive
@@harrogatefan4976 yes you can do this
@@MichaelTheComputerGuy Thank you
Whole laptop specs please?
look it up yourself.
how long is the cloning process because mines has been stuck at 0% idk why. moving from a 256gb ssd to 1TB. Havent even used much space for it to be taking long. can anyone help with the issue?
Try a different cloning software.
@@MichaelTheComputerGuy any software you recommend for the 970 evo 1tb?
@@ItsCreates The Samsung migration software usually works well. Macrium reflect is another good one.
@@MichaelTheComputerGuy the Samsung one is the one that didn’t work for me stood at 0%
I need your help I wanna trust you on this procedure.. I have the same laptop and bought the same nvme m.2 1tb upgrade..except an evo 970+ m.2 nvme pcie instead of the 980... Anyway, Samsung tools are supposed to be the best and easiest but I've read most comments online that it didn't work they needed to change bios ahci settings etc... I need help!! I have a ton of music software I need to use! Scared.. I wish I could pay someone or have you come lol
Another complaint dells manual says up to 500g m.2 at one point then later 1tb max.. yet some claim they did 2tb upgrade fine but Dell said 1 so that's what I got evo 970?
@@namrekcanad Usually the max capacity that a manufacturer lists is whatever is available at the time of the specs creation for that model. It'll take a one terabyte even a two terabyte or probably a 3.8 something terabyte solid state drive. Go ahead and try and use the Samsung migration software. It'll most likely be fine. If you have trouble with it I would recommend macrium reflect free. You really shouldn't have to change any bio settings.
You said 2tb... This is still a mystery it possible.. tricked me
Google chrome sucks in my opinion.
