    Very nice. In Mexico, everyone does this to their 12 strings. The most popular north Mexican music right now consists of a tuba, 6 string, and a 12 string lead Guitar with unison tuned strings. If you’re interested, just look up any of this artists or groups: Virlan Garcia, Ariel Camacho, Alta Consigna.

  • @islander4986

    I think the effect that's pleasing you is called "chorusing." When I played my Dano 12 (strung the conventional way) in the store before I bought it, the two unison courses (B + E pairs) had a chorusing sound-I asked the salesperson if the amp had a built in chorus effect, but it was just a normal amp. The "unison" string pairs are very slightly different in pitch, and when you bend them, this becomes even more evident-they don't bend to exactly the same pitch. I have to say, I didn't like the tone of the unison pairs. The octave pairs sounded better to my ear, and I often avoid the unison pairs when playing lines.

  • @RockStarOscarStern634

    AndyLovesMusic That tuning has a very special name & it's called Sierreño tuning. Sierreno is of course 2 sets of 6 String Guitar string sets on a 12 String. The Sierreno people replace the octave string pairs w/ all unison string pairs because it sounds alot like the Bajo Sexto & also blends in with a Bajo Sexto.

  • @sirpancho
    @sirpancho ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It is a mechanical chorus (or related), definitely. But interesting that when bending, it captures the slight differences due to how the bending affects differently for each of the parallel strings. Nice!

    What a delightful idea!! I've bought some cheap 12string guitar from gear4music for like 80£, even tried to put rickenbacker humbucker in there... been never happy with a tone, today I've bought Danelectro.. and now was thinking what should I do with that other guitar... and this idea is just really something! I'll have more tones in my collection, Thank you!!

    Thanks Andy for the demo . I own 4 12 strings love them myself. Now of course I will convert my Dano to this setup. Best to keep the Beatle Rickenbacher in the standard setup. I can see how much more useful this setup would be in trying to play any kind of lead lines.And yes I would think tracking and playing the Rick and the new setup on my Dano would make a great combination.

    Interesting idea. I have a Dano 12 too, which is how I happened upon this video. I also have an Avante Gryphon, which utilizes the same idea (courses in unison rather than octaves), but it's a 3/4 size guitar, tuned D to D. So it sounds a bit like an acoustic 12 string capo'ed at 10.

      @@andylovesmusic4305 Fun fact that's the same tuning used in Northern Mexican music because it sounds almost like a Bajo Sexto. The Octaves Tuning is ideal for Rhythm Playing, but the Unison String tuning works well for Lead playing cause there isn't yet (Octave4Plus makes a High B String) a High E5 String for 12 String & w/a 25.5 inch scale length there isn't yet a string thin enough to tune up to an E5 (same high E as on the Mandolin).

      daniel redman in north western mexico there is style of music where they have a bass player, a regular 6 string on harmony, and an acoustic 12 string with unison strings not octave playing melody. they sure have a different, thicker sound.

    • @kennikuhlmann-clark9860
      @kennikuhlmann-clark9860 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That may not be a significant problem, because even though you would be using a thicker string, it would not be tuned an octave higher -- like the thinner string would be.... The overall string tensions would be similar; and, you can check this out by looking at manufacturers' string tension charts for whole sets, or individual strings... A low E string does not have twice or triple the tension of a high E string; for instance, in a set of extra-light D'Addario chrome flatwounds, the high E is 16.22 lbs, and the low E is 20.36 lbs (and if you customize the set, and choose a low E of 0.045" instead of 0.048", its tension is 17.73 lbs).....
      ** But, the problems you may run into are the string slot sizes in the nut and bridge, and the distance between each slot in a pair, which could cause the strings to vibrate against each other (too much).... If the bridge has holes where strings pass through, these may also be too small in some cases... I would expect to have to adjust the slots in the nut and bridge (or replace them).

    • @Muzikman127

      the issue there would be that that might accentuate the bending difference to the point of dissonance rather than a desireable chorussing effect. Perhaps not though! Also it would probably make a difference which way round you strung it, that is to say the thinner gauge on the inside or the outside of the bend. Have you tried this yet? If so, what were your results?
      As for 5ths, I'd imagine that novelty would wear off pretty fast

I did this and the six string electric using the neck pick up but some tremolo in the a.m.P . The playback was pretty cool but whatever your imagination comes up with in combination it’s very much fun.
