Baritone guitar could be an interesting instrument for this series. I know they've become something of a fad recently but they're really great for recording or just for writing - I find if I've written a song on a standard tuning guitar and then try it out on my baritone it lends a very different feel, beyond simply transposing keys

How much lower is your baritone tuned, and how much longer is the scale?

@@BluegillGreg I made it in millimetres so I think there’s a lot of decimal places in inches - but it’s 680mm scale length (think 25.5” in mm is roughly 648?). Tuned down to B standard, strung with Ernie Ball 72-13s. I generally prefer shorter scale length guitars so made it as short as I thought I could get away with, honestly it doesn’t feel noticeably bigger than my Tele
Edit: just checked and in inches the scale length is about 26.78”

Nice. I am currently building a, I was gonna say 12-string Tearcaster since it's something in-between a tele and a Vox teardrop, but when I showed my daughter the body she thought it looked like "a fancy pear", so it's a Pearcaster now. I have green stainer. But I never owned a 12-string before, kind of exited to finish it now.

The best part about an electric twelve is you can really do everything with it. I do use fast chord changes with it, especially if they're open and you keep the same notes droning. I play hot overdriven leads with multiple effects on, sounds like a synth! I do textural drones, the options are endless, and honestly a better creative tool than a six (in my opinion lol).

Eric, there's this band called King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard (yeah cool name for a band right?!) the lead singer plays most of their stuff (which is A LOT OF STUFF) with a 12 string and it's interesting the role of this instrument on their catalog. Try listening to their albums "Nonagon Infinity" and "Muder of the Universe". Nice video as always

Representing the prog side of things, I have to mention Mike Rutherford of Genesis. He helped to define Genesis' early sound with his acoustic and electric 12-string work on songs like "Musical Box", "Supper's Ready" and "Cinema Show". Honorable mention also goes to Steve Howe of Yes with his raga-ish riffing on "Awaken", which also includes something Eric will probably hate -- a jaw-dropping solo. He used a Rickenbacker for the recording and 70s live work, although he switched to a Steinberger 12-string at some point in the 1980s. I'm sure the tuning was way more stable, although it did cause the character of the sound to change a bit.

Thank You for the great video. For me 12 string guitars are ALL about the textures. Marty Wilson-Piper was onto this decades ago with The Church. The Danelectro sounds more like a banjo than a guitar to me. But Jim McGuinn played his Rickenbackers with a banjo fingerpicking style so no problem there. A lot of people complain about the thin neck of the 3xx RIC lines. Three ways to easily fix that though. 1/ Modify the nut to widen the string spacing, 2/ Purchase a 3xx RM model or, 3/ Purchase a 6xx RIC 12 instead.

On the money, creating space in the song and allowing those strings to ring is the way, i’ve played with other bands and stuff where the guitars are playing all these rhythm chords and I just hit a few notes here and there that would cut through the whole thing and made much more of an impact

A good trick to get a 12-string sound with a 6-string is use a pitch shifter pedal with an octave up and mix at 50% with a light chorus

I love 12-string guitars, acoustic and electric. But the way I like to play is arpeggiating extended chord structures (added 2nd, 9th, 4th, 6th, 7th, aug, dim, sus., etc.) with a few ringing open strings. With the12-string, chords with 2nds, 4ths, 6ths, those close harmonies don't sound dissonant as on a 6 string guitar, and the guitar sings like an harp or a piano.

I know you're a Thompson fan, and so you know that Ric 12s are crucial to a lot of what Richard Thompson had Simon Nicol playing behind him, whether we're talking later Fairport, or his solo stuff...

Blues, in particular country-blues, sounds great on 12-string guitars. Think how nice The Black Keys' cover of "Poor Boy" would sound on that guitar.

Late to the party...Roger McGuinn has been my electric 12 string touchstone since I heard the Byrds in the 60s. I've had two acoustics but never ventured into electric. I am not convinced that a chorus pedal is a good replacement for a decent 12 string. I have a Dano 6 string. This Dano 12 is on my "gotta get" list. Great video with loads of great info.

Very nice presentation. It would have been interesting to insist on 2 points :
    a) the difference between 12-Danelectros and 12-Rickenbakers : as the octave strings are inverted on Rickens, the sound is pretty different.
    b) the incredible sound of 12 strings guitars in open D (or open E) tuning ! (with easier fingerings and diminished efforts to press the strings). Blues, country, folk, gospel, a 12-string guitar perfectly fits all these styles.

Watch out, that progression should be Handled With Care!
And the first thing I do every time I pick up a 12 string is play "Mr. Tambourine Man", not chords, but I suppose that's about as obvious as you get. Can't ever resist.
Yeah, Page seemed to always use the Danelectro in alt tunings. Open A and DADGAD. Speaking of, that rockabilly-ish noodling kind of sounded like the end riff from "Hots on For Nowhere".
That old Carter picking applied to a 12 string sounds super 60s, which makes sense.
Also, for pedal steel, there's the option of imitating pedal steel. I already use super light strings for bending and vibrato, so I just add in use of the volume knob. Probably easier on a Strat than my Les Paul, but it's what the song I'm currently working on called for.

My 12 is an acoustic. I use it in DADGAD a lot, which really maximises drone potential. Also, easier to play.
