The composer on the weird version is Vladimir Horunzhy his name appears on the U.K. pre release pack by Guild video. Ken Weiderhorn hated the soundtrack and went to the CEO of Lorimar to ask for it to be changed. There are also loads of zombie voice fx Billy saying Brains the zombie who grabs Jessie’s hair saying brains. The narration at the start of the film too. I think Warner simply used the original print of the film when making the dvd and because all the language tracks for the film were produced after post production these remained unchanged.

    • @WooHoo-itsGaryGnu

@@l21n18 Yes, the 2004 WB DVD release with the different score was actually the films original score. Producer Tom Fox went behind the directors back and hired the composer and had the film scored before they locked picture on color correction... Editing was complete. When Ken had to screen a print for Lorimar he was unaware of the composer and had put a temp soundtrack in place... when the print rolled he was horrified, the execs gave him about $30k for a new composer and they hooked him up with J. Peter Robinson who made the score we know and love.

Out of both versions I have to say it's an absolute crime that the DVD version replaced the Trioxin Theme with what sounds like Video Game Music. The Trioxin gas accompanied by the theme in the first film is so Iconic and the Updated version in part 2 was so important giving you the feel of the first film. If I had any complaint about part 3 it would only be that they should've use the Trioxin Theme in the opening with the reanimated corpse.

There's a somewhat similar issue in 1987's "Summer School." It was supposed to include a Debbie Harry song called "Mind Over Matter," but there was a contract dispute, so E.G. Daily re-recorded the song. They goofed and left Harry's version in the French dub (available on the US DVD), which was the only place to hear her recording until a bootleg surfaced a decade or so ago.

The issue with the music is contracts are signed with something like "theatrical, broadcast television and video home movies (VHS)" Blueray, DVD, streaming didn't exist so the bands got paid according to the contract and the studio doesn't have rights to distribute the music in any other format. So if they do distribute ...on Blueray or whatever they are in violation of copyright which goes beyond just a civil suit for payment and could extend into criminal court.

Music rights on analog video and digital video are treated separately. There were a lot of music rights issues with DVD. Many releases were damaged by not being able to re-procure rights for songs that were just replaced with generic music. The Beavis and Butthead series DVD release was derailed by rights disputes. They had actually produced the first run but recalled them before release.

OK. Good theory. This mystery plagued me for some time as well. I honed in on one thing that, for whatever reason, is what I believe to be, at least partially, if not the entirety of why the score is different:
    (Drum roll)
    Francis Haines' Trioxin Theme!
While used sparingly, there are a few sections of the English track score that use a variation on what is the main motif of the first film's theme.
Being a musician, I know how easily a lawsuit can arise from something seemingly miniscule. But I also know the length that filmmakers are willing to go to get out of having to pay someone for iconic work they've produced.
My guess is that perhaps between the release of the VHS and DVD, Haines discovered quite late that they had used incorporated a portion of his track into the score without being properly credited and, more importantly, paid.
As you said, the film being such a low-level release is why a studio would not want to shell out for a lawsuit. So instead of ponying up, they lazily slapped a bunch of music they owned outright over the entire score so that no one could say a single note of it was copied.
Why do I think this? If you listen to the alternate score, it is the most conspicuously absent element that is in the restored score. Every Halloween film had to credit and pay Carpenter to use the main theme.
There were multiple Anchor Bay releases, most famously perhaps all five seasons of 21 Jump Street, that had EVERY song from EVERY episode replaced with cheap free stuff so as to not have to pay to relicense their music.
This was problematic for a number of films. Like Dazed and Confused. It would have been far less expensive to have new bands do covers of older 70s songs to use in the film than to license the original versions. Linklater said it was the most important part of the film and refused to budge.
So the studio paid, and he got all but, funnily enough, the namesake song from Zeppelin, as they are notoriously weird about allowing their songs in film. And the soundtrack became an enormous hit when released on physical media.
I know these arent 1:1 comparisons, but I do think it illustrates just how fickle music rights can be in general. I'd love to know what anyone else thinks.

2:35 "It really took me back but I was so in love with the aesthetic of the film that I completely forgave it." "It took me back" means it brought back memories, but unless you hated the first movie, why would you need to forgive something for bringing up memories? It might take some out of the movie though and confuse people, but they're both great sequels IMO and I kinda like that they used actors from RotLD that died, it comes off as something they did for a laugh TBH and I like both characters, it's hard to imagine it with other actors. Hard to imagine Evil Dead 2 without Bruce too.

Part 2’s Blu audio isn’t even correct. It’s a VHS rip where you can hear the hiss throughout and tape damage at one point.
The only TRUE audio is the Laserdisc. Love shout factory but the fact they used vhs over laser was really annoying.
To further answer your question, WB do keep workprint audios around from time to time if they need elements to split into a 5.1 mix. My theory would be the elements were just easier to get.

I hate when they change something that doesn't need changing like when they updated the Friday the 13th PART 5,6,7 AND 8 DVD cover in the UK when they first came out with that cheap-looking brown and yellowish covers when compared to the originals which are superior covers. Having grew up on Rotld 2 in the late 80s on VHS and that was the soundtrack I was familiar with until the DVD came out and remember the other new score didn't work for me. I always put that DVD version down to someone just updating the soundtrack. Just another little thing I noticed in Halloween 4 when Michael is on top of the car trying to grab Rachael, the VHS version has the Halloween theme playing in the background all the way through til Michael falls off but in the (UK) Anchor Bay DVD version Rachaels screaming, the cars screeching, the theme plays for a few seconds then suddenly stops.
