In this video, I (a contemporary voice specialist) analyse "Righteous Brothers" performing “Unchained Melody” (Live in 1965) on the fly, whilst watching and hearing it for the first time.
Watch me adoringly describe Bobby Hatfield's incredibly classy use of vocal technique, obsess over his ingenious switch-a-roo between Mode 1 & 2 (head to chest voice) and dive into to the magic of contrast. In this video, I analyse the composition and vocal performance in depth. I explain and demonstrate the vocal techniques (from an anatomical perspective), and ultimately tell you what I think makes this so great.
As always, please leave your suggestions for more musical and vocal wonders for us all to discover in the comments!

If we are meeting for the first time, HELLO GORGEOUS! I'm Lolli, a voice teacher and vocal anatomy nerd specialising in contemporary techniques. I have a degree in vocal performance, and I am studying for a masters degree in voice pedagogy. I sing aaaall the time! Pop, jazz, rock, metal, soul, Carnatic and I am constantly learning and practising new vocal skills. I just bloody love singing. It's my favourite thing in the whole world, and because I love you, I want you to sing too.
I believe everyone can sing, and my mission with this channel is to break down techniques that are so often portrayed as something to be exclusively accessed by people with a special talent. Special talents can be learnt, and I am here to teach them to you.

I have watched literally hundreds of vocal coaches react to music and NONE of them has your ability to take the voice we are listening to and describe what is taking place in a way that combines both very technical information and a very simple, understandable explanation of what we are listening to - you are truly fantastic!!

No re-mixing, no autotune, just pure talent, which is what you needed to succeed back then. This is also one of he most covered songs in music history, there are over 1,500 versions, but Bobby Hatfield still owns it. As others have said, your next reaction the the Righteous Brothers should be, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", followed by "Summertime." Thanks for all you do, Lolli.

There are videos that have the image reversed. Don't know why -- maybe trying to not have copyright issues.
He said afterwards that he was aware of mama the entire time. It was like when he would practice at home. She's the woman in the blue print dress and fur stole. His dad is sitting next to her.
Wanted to add that he was always nervous about performing. Imagine being that good but still a bundle of nerves.

I have been a vocalist for over 55 years and I cried during your description/analysis of this song. You are spot on in relation to the position of the larynx and the nuances that occur when a vocalist emotes any song well. This is a singer giving his soulful interpretation of a song that so many people can relate to. It is truly unchained from musical rules and expectations of what the composer intended. It is a personal vocal rendition of a song of love and longing that comes from deep inside the singer that is perfectly transferred to the listener. We all know what that longing is and can relate to it with an emotional response. Your voice and intonation are a perfect match for analyzing this classic song. Thank you for your in-depth analysis of this.

What a wonderful reaction and analysis and explanation. Bobbie and I went to college at the same time and school and a lot of us went to see the Righteous Brothers at a little place in Newport Beach called "The Prison of Socrates" before they became popular and famous. They were very good then too and they developed a strong following pretty quickly. Your reactions have been routinely excellent because you know your craft very well and perform it exceptionally well too. But your ability to express your reaction to the music non-verbally is equal to your knowledge and performance ability. I know of no other "reactor" who expresses the kind of joyous embrace of music and life that you do. You have such a gift that you become the gift to everyone who watches. The clip at the end with you in the water was an unexpected and magical treat which combined with what preceded it will make the rest of the week a happy interlude. Thank You !

My BFF from childhood, with whom (there you go) I double-dated, along with introducing me to my wife now of 50 years, and who died far, far too young because the world is terribly unfair - well, we team-described this song as "The Ultimate Slow Dance Song." He was chatting with his partner and a moderator a few moments before and was quite breathy, as he had a slight cold apparently. And then he still goes and pulls off one of the most remarkable live performances of all (in my opinion). He had to do some minor acrobatics that night because of a terrible cold which didn't hinder this being one of the greatest live performances ever. As you go forward to hear other songs by him you will notice that, without a cold, his notes are always crystal clear unless he doesn't want them to be. He was capable of some of the wildest vocals you'll ever hear. I'd be interested to see how you tackle his performance of "Summertime". His partner, Bill Medley, also had amazing skills as a bass baritone who could move through octaves with ease. They were both amazing singers but were magic together. Hope you react to more of their work together as well as their solo performances.

His voice in this song regardless of emotion going in I’m drawn close to tears. Exquisite, beautiful there’s not a sufficient way to describe or praise, imho. I wish I had even a fraction of his talent. The greatest compliment I ever got was moving someone to tears this man could move a stone to tears.

One thing that sets older r&b singers apart was how much they willing to sing behind the beat and milk a phrase. He really stretches each vocal melisma out to it's longest length instead of rushing through like so many modern singers do. There's never a push to sing too many notes but at the same time he always sings more notes than you expect. It's not just about how he sings but how he performs.

Bobby's arrangements of this song are much more complex than the original song, and even other artists before him. Both his studio recording and this live performance are the gold standard, and what most artists since use in some variation. 25 years after this, his recording was used in the movie Ghost and returned to the charts. You've probably realized from this that Bobby could sing anything,

You need to listen to Angelina Jordan's live version from her Nobel Peace Prize performance. She performed it with Kork, who is an orchestra from Norway. They have performed several times together over the years. Nargis Mohammedi is an Iranian woman who has fought for womans rights in Iran and is in prison in Iran for speaking out. Her twin 18-year-old children attended the performance. In Angelina style, she changed the tempo and tone to portray a sadness and longing for Nargis to be set free. This is a must listen. It's worth noting that AJ'S grandma is an Iranian artist. Angelina also performed this song as a child. That said, the Righteous Brothers version is one of my all time favorite songs.

It's in the class of Whitney Huston's performance of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," or Patsy Cline's performance of Willy Nelson's "Crazy." You made it thoroughly enjoyable in a new way. Thank you. How about a Fairy Voice Mother count down of her choices of the ten most iconic performances of all time? Would love to see your selections.

Bobby Hatfield's style, and the singing style of all of their music, the Righteous Brother's designated as "Blue-eyed Soul". Your analysis of the myriad of variations that he employed in this performance was the essence of their "Blue-eyed Soul"'. A fascinating style for you to analyze but a legendary performance.
    Cheers.

I've never actually seen this performance and I now realise why Angelia Jordan went so high when she did her version - she was going old school and I had been used to the more contemporary versions, but then she does tend to look back to originals for inspiration. Bloody brilliant he is as well, such a pretty voice.

What captured me as a young man way back was the way he pronounced these two words " touch" and "much" ,in the beginning of this song, in some shortened/edgy way. So different towards the rest that it stood out to me . Hats of for Bobby and all those golden oldies singers.
