I actually sold my Leica M9 + glass and went all X-Pro2 a few years back, just 2 months ago I sold all the Fuji gear and bought a GR3, I make more photos and have more enjoyment than ever before.
The M9 I loved but I felt like a fashionista, especially with people (note, I do not say photographer..) like Lenny Kravitz endorsing it.. I have feeling Leica went the wrong direction. Although amazing glass and I loved the simplicity, I didnt feel happy walking the streets with it nor taking it on holidays. Having £10k of kit around your shoulders is not making me feel free, it restrains me in taking shots.
This was less so with the Fuji kit, although I thought it was too complicated to work and the lenses are big, too big and bulky. I was taking less and less photos, kit was gathering dust.
GR brought back enjoyment, I feel completely free and the IQ is still amazing. Only downside I would say is weather and dust proofing. I'd happily pay £200 extra to make it more robust.

Hi, good point. I do not have a Leica (at least a digital one, only an M6) but I have the same feeling. 8000€ for an M10 + 3000 for a lens... I don't feel comfortable about that. Great camera I guess but for that price I just want to put it in a safe at the bank. Same feeling about Fuji. I had an X100s, sold it, too slow, too intricated, no way to pre-focus in an easy, fast and intuitive way. Got back to the GR (the II). It's not the same as a Leica but you have to accept some compromises (no viewfinder). The quality you get for 900€ is great. And with snap focus, you can just forget about the camera and only concentrate on shooting, which is what I want. The GR makes investing into a Leica Q completely irrelevant in my opinion.
Also, the Leica 28mm lens alone is much more expensive that the GR itself... :D

I agree, and know what you are feeling, used to own an M4 and M3 back in the late 1970's and always worried about theft, damage, and the cost value. Purchased Olympus OM stuff, and used it more back then. These days a cheap iPhone is my camera. I've used different Point-Shoot Canons, G1, G2, Olympus, Nikon, etc, but the lens mechanisms that retract with on-off always fail after a short while. $900 for a Ricoh GIII that will grind to a stop and fail I would not purchase. A used Olympus Pen or OMD series with 25mm (50mm) or 17mm (34mm) would be more robust and reliable. Used micro 4-3 stuff is cheap these days, plus you can leave it in the car or throw it in a backpack and not worry. I'm talking myself into a micro 4-3 here :-)

Thank you for such a valuable comparison. I guess most of us have always known that Leica glass is superior but today you showed us clearly that the Ricoh GR3 lens CAN be sharper when stopped at 2.8. For me, that is (pleasant) news! I don't know if the same test results apply to my Ricoh GR2, but I am pleased anyway and I will try to take more photos at 2.8 with my GR2. Thank you for your informative videos.

I’ve always wanted the 28mm Elmarit for its sharpness and compact size. 28mm and 50mm are my two favorite focal lengths. As an eyeglass wearer though, I can’t really see the 28mm framelines. So I keep the 50 on my M and carry the GR as my 28. I love the pictures from the GR and think they compliment the M9 files nicely. Super sharp and flat, with lots of latitude for adjusting in LR.
The GR has the added benefits of being cheaper, faster than changing lenses, and more discrete. If I’m only carrying one camera, it’s usually the GR (in my back pocket).

@@archivismarchivism7830 no problems...the Ricoh GrII had dust issue, while for the moment my Ricoh gr III has not, since it has also the image stabilisation that provides the cleaning of the sensor. But, there is a big but, you have to consider that plenty that complain about dust on the sensor, they don't take really care about their Ricoh, even mkII. Since it is so pocketable they just throw it in the pocket and "good so"...without any protection. So if you take care of your camera, your camera will take care of you.
With all this said, I don't know where do you live, but of course you have to remember that even if Ricoh provide great IQ, it has many compromises...so you have to think about what you wanna do with it...Personally I live in the north of Sweden, in this moment outside there are minus 20 celsius, and I will not bring my Ricoh with me for landscape photography...have you thought about Fuji X100V instead?

Thanks for this interesting comparison. My takeaway is that the quality of images you can get with either camera depends largely on the skills of the photographer and has little to do with the relatively small differences in camera optics or sensor. The Leica may be sharper overall, but I suspect the differences could largely be eliminated in post processing.

Hello Samuel, the GR crop sensor will become diffraction limited at smaller f-numbers than the full frame. Your testing shows this, which validates your testing. It's not a fault with the GR, it's physics. All APS-C sensors will be the same. Smaller sensors will hit the list earlier.

My understanding is that in terms of diffraction, a lens is actually sharpest at widest apertures but countering that are the imperfections of the lens are most prevalent at widest apertures (I believe from the inclusion of the edges of the lens in the design) and with the shallower depth of field.
So the sweet spot is often a few stops down to eliminating the imperfections in the lens but balance the effects of diffraction against the pixel size. I imagine the effects of direction kick in way sooner with the gr iii with the smaller pixel size of an apex sensors with equal pixel numbers. Might explain it. Also Ricoh may have optimised the lens as you said with little imperfection at open apertures.
    I'm no expert though. =)

There was no comment on the chromatic aberration on the Leica compared to Ricoh, which had none, so I guess there's a bit of a confirmation bias having shelled out all that dough on the Leica set. ;)
The softness is linked to sensor size and megapixels. More crammed in so diffraction kicks in early, no surprises there.
Both are capable of taking technically correct photos (a statement which could apply to most modern prosumer digital cameras) but the pocketability of the Ricoh combined with its technical prowess is a win win. There is no compromise and you are more likely to take the camera with you.
Not a fan of Ricoh' third iteration, shame about the flash missing, ergonomics are worse as well, really enjoy the II model.

Any visible DOF difference is due to the two different focal lengths. An 18.5mm lens is an 18.5mm lens, regardless of the image circle it is covering. Just as a 28mm lens is a 28mm lens. If I gave you a Zeiss Planar T✻ 80mm f/2.8 CF lens and you attached it to a Leica SL, it would still be a...you guessed it...80mm lens. Saying "full-frame vs. APS-C" obfuscates the optical reality. There is SO MUCH confusion about "crop-factor" when there needn't be. Otherwise, fun comparo. Big fan ;-)

Good test anyway.

I'm also experiencing this wrong-aperture-value issue with all my lenses (leica or others). Since Lightroom uses the images EXIF for showing the camera values like aperture, the wrong aperture has to be written to the image by the body itself. It's not a Lightroom issue.
According to the leica forum, this is because there's *usually* no electrical connection from the body to the lens (I put that in quotes as a disclaimer - the forum- thread was quite old and maybe something changed with newer Leica bodies ;) . The 6-bit coding seems just to be read optically. And only to identify the lens. The aperture value is just being guessed by the body.

I'm amazed you never mention the colour rendering of the two lenses/cameras. Is that because you regard that more as a sensor/processor (speak camera) issue than a lens issue? Anyway, the Leica colours are clearly more pleasing and are linked to the better micro contrast as well, of course. I have both a GR III and a Leica Q2 (and the rest of my gear is Fuji including an X100V) and I find the colour rendering the biggest advantage of the Q2 - the myth of the Leica colours seems justified at least to some extent!:). The 6-bit coding system on a LEICA M does not capture the aperture used on the lens and communicate it to the camera. All it does is show the camera which lens is mounted. The aperture you see in Lightroom is just a best guess by Lightroom. That is why it is mostly wrong.
