    Even though the GR III does not WR I can tell you it can take some hits due to recent experience. I slipped and fell waist deep into a glacier lake recently in Norway, my GR in my hand having the strap not attached to my wrist. So my GR was floating in the lake for a few seconds in ice cold water. After the accident I took out the battery and cleaned of the water a bit. But then also continued shooting a bit. (I know you shouldn't do that..) The photos had a little foggy look to them. Then I turned the camera on and took the battery out while it was on, so the lens would stay open and extended. I put it on a desk for a night with the battery door open as well. Since then, the fog disappeared and it works as before, pictures look like before. Long story short, the GR definitely can take a little rain etc. as it works perfectly now after having been covered in ice cold water for a short amount of time.

      Hi, Q2/GRiii owner, here! Love both cameras. Often, I carry both with me. For street photography/travel, you can’t beat the GR’s compact size - (the Q2 is bulky in comparison, wearing mine around my neck.) There are many pluses to owning the GRiii or GRiiix over the Leica Q2. Firstly, the sensor. Compared to the digital cameras I own, the GR produces the best colour and black and white files, period. The RAW files, are also incredible, as they are DNG’s. Secondly, USB-C charging. Yes, the GRiii’s battery is limited, compared to the Q2. But the in-body charging makes all the difference. I love that. Wish I could plug in my Q2 to USB-C (like the SL2) but that’s down to waterproofing. My biggest dislike is the charging times for the Q2 battery. You’re out of the game until then. The Ricoh GRiii can do everything, more or less, that the Q2 can do. With advantages as mentioned above. Excited to try the GRiiix - if Ricoh did a full body SL2 style camera, I wouldn’t look back. I trust them. Ricoh is the future of digital photography.

      @@courtneysmith731 I also own the GR III as well as the Q2. Love them both. definitely prefer the Q2 but the GR III ends up coming with me more often because of it’s tiny size (and incredible quality images). I will definitely be adding GR IIIx to my bag as soon as it is available :)

    @samuel thankful to see you've kept your connection with Ricoh, I hope they recognize how much you help them. I cant think of anyone better to ask them directly about having an LCD ON AF/half-press firmware setting that turns off immediately after preview. this way the LCD is only on during the actual act of shooting/review, keeping stealthy but more crucially saving battery (our darling camera's achilles heel). or at least adding more options to the Auto Sleep Mode (10, 15, 30 sec) would also serve our poor batteries greatly. thank you and please continue this great thing going 🙏🏼

    That frame with the girl running up the steps was incredible. The shadows leading to the bird silhouette. The pillars framing the girl and the subtle green arrow guiding my gaze from right to left makes this photo even more provocative from a cinematographic point of view.

    Might be the best GR IIIx review not just for now, but of all times. Because time was spent not only to take good example photos, but due to the effort to explain about 40mm FOV. From my not common FOV, 40mm POV it is just too narrow. I like GRD cameras I have, but I constantly reach for 21mm. Layers and framing is still achievable with 21, but you have to like to be close. Which is not always good during COVID.

    Hey.. im looking again at a digital (had so many lol) ... my first love is film... in camera editing now has come on, and im interested in this gr3x.... BUT...
    to get a film look you need to manage certain qualities in order to get the look. Ive read there are certain functions backed into the raw files of this camera... so its imperative you get the shot right as you shoot it.
    With the fuji's you have Highlight and Shadow Tone Controls.... which are key controls in getting a film look.
    Are these available on the Richos?
    Ideally i dont want to go back to using lightroom and all the faff anymore... i dont really print large format prints anymore... so i dont see a need... unless I want to go the route of getting plugins for lightroom to get a look if i cant get it done in camera shooting jpgs.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Elias, sorry for the late reply! I prefer TV with the GR because the depth of field is much broader than full frame and I can get a lot more in focus (even with 2.8) than with a full frame camera. And in Av mode you give up control over speed which is very important for street photography. I compensate aperture by manually setting a higher ISO value to raise the aperture value.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GR IIIx and GR III are both identical cameras. Only the lens is different. So AF speed will be the same. If anything then I think the GR III might be faster because the lens "travels" less. But I don't feel a difference. And zone focusing with the GRIIIx is easier than with a 35mm on full frame camera and people have been doing that for decades so it shouldn't be a problem. I use snap focus on the GR IIIx without any issues.

    hi Samuel , I guess the photos were edited from raw ? is it one of your presets used here ? many thanks

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they were edited from RAW but I didn't use my presets. I left them as natural as possible.

    Are the shown pictures straight out of camera or are they edited? They just look absolutely stunning!

      Almost all single images where edited very slightly in Lightroom. But I didn't do much. I tried to keep the colors and contrast as natural as possible. All of the sequences (the shots from the scene with the little girl and the mirror) are straight out of camera jpegs with the positive film effekt. Only the final images are edited. Hope that helped!

      @@SamuelStreetlife Thanks for the answer! The unedited pictures you mentioned were actually my favorites haha. As soon as my Fuji X100F breaks I probably will switch to Ricoh. Saw your other videos about their cameras since I bought my Fuji 2 years ago and ever since I thought the Ricoh might be better in every single video. Thanks for your content and have a nice evening!

    Hi Samuel, great video as always!
    You are the reason that I got one of the first and best photo albums that I own, "Friction/Tokyo Street by the amazing Tatsuo Suzuki"...
    I have one probably irrelevant question, but please allow me so... Could you tell me where you got and how much did it cost, the beautiful grey jacket that you wear in the beginning of this video? Thank you very much for your time and keep going stong and creative!

    Nice preview Samuel. Thanks. Curious what the snap focus distances depth of field are? They are certainly narrower than the 28mm. Ricoh has not put the manual online yet.

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uh hard to say without knowing the actual data on that. But it isn't that much more difficult then using a 35mm for zone focusing.

    What amount of megapixels do you get with the digitial zooms? And can you shoot in raw with digital zoom?

  • @Pinmarcus
    @Pinmarcus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was going to get the GR3 (28mm) but now I'm not sure which focal to use😜. Maybe will get the 28mm because nature of snapshot camera and getting everything into the frame.

    Ohhhh I really want one of these. I loved my original GR so much for street and sadly it died after a fight with a wave. This new 40mm looks even better than the 28mm.

      Yeah probably the same for me. Have the II but didnt see that much point in upgrading for the way I use it but with a different focal length that's a whole different story.

      @@skypekai True same. The iii is nice for sure but not really worth the big price increase for me. I also prefer the positive film on the ii

    Wow, those are sharp! I thought my old GR was sharp. But this one is great! Any thoughts on dust resistance? The old ones were know for letting dust in. That all said will Ricoh continue to offer the III along with the IIIx?

      Been bumping my GR3 around since the initial release. It remains dust free - the new SR cleaning mechanism really works.

    Hey Samuel. Was looking forward to hearing your view on this one. You used to use the GRiii in 35mn crop mode, right? How does that compare with the GRiiiX 40mm shots? Dramatically different?

    • @SamuelStreetlife
      @SamuelStreetlife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The field of view is only slightly wider with the 35mm crop but the compression and depth of field is exactly like a 28mm lens (or 18mm to be precise) so having a real 40mm (26mm) lens makes a big difference even compared to the 35mm crop mode (in my opinion). On my instagram page I saved a highlight where you can see the differences between both lenses and crop modes.

    whats strange about back ground separation is - "who made that the standard?" and im reminded how zone focusing in street photography is very common - shooting at your f8 or more - so what back ground separation are we even looking for?
    in any case a very interesting progressing for GR and here's to fuji to bring new lens type for their X100V or maybeeee X80??
    thanks for the video - and hope to see more of this camera as well.

    I use a fuji xe3 and I'm always on my 18mm f2 and 27mm f2.8 when people are involved.
    Wished this focal length was available when I got the griii for my wife. She is still uncomfortable with how wide it is.
