- If you need to renounce your Indian citizenship in the UK, this video will guide you through the process of applying for a surrender certificate and renouncing your Indian passport.
Indian nationals who are considering acquiring foreign citizenship should be aware that the Indian Citizenship Act does not allow for dual citizenship. Therefore, those who have obtained foreign citizenship must apply for 'Renunciation of Indian Citizenship/Surrender Certificate' by relinquishing their Indian passport. As per Section 12(1A) of the Passports Act, holding an Indian passport as a foreign national is a punishable offence. This also applies to Indian nationals who have become foreign nationals.

Thank you for this informative video. Did you take 2 VFS appointments for the same day - one for Indian passport surrender and other for Renunciation of Indian Citizenship. How long was the overall process for surrendering the passport and renouncing the citizenship - how long did it take for you to receive the certificates for each. Do we need to wait for these certificates before applying for OCI or can OCI application process be kickstarted immediately after submitting the applications for surrender of passport and renouncing of Indian citizenship?
I only booked one appointment with the Birmingham consulate. Vfs didn't ask for an appointment as I went there on the same day.surrender certificate came within 1 week. Still waiting for renounciation certificate. You basically need the whole day to attend both the places and submit both forms.I am waiting for both to start OCI application.
Just to check that I have understood, you submitted both applications online on the same day. Then booked an appointment for renunciation at HCI, got the document, then made 2 sets and submitted both together at Vfs? I'm in Manchester so I need to travel to Birmingham first at HCI and then book an appointment at Vfs to submit both? The Vfs appointments don't show an option for RC appointment, just SC. Can you use the same SC appointment to submit both?
You have to attend HCI first at the appt time( as per online booking) and get a form signed.This form was actually provided to me by VFS as I attended VFS first by mistake.I guess it's also available at HCI. It's a simple 1 page form. You can only book 1 appointment online for HCI Birmingham, and no appt booking needed for VFS provided you are doing both on the same day. Please carry 2 copies of all supporting documents for the final submission.
@@SumanPaulDoc could you book an appointment for VFS the next day or a few days later and submit both then? Like I said, I live in Manchester so I'll be at the Vfs centre here. Also the form they sign, is it your Renunciation application or something else I need to get?
@@swarna5892 You have to book another appointment if you are planning to visit VFS on another day. If possible ,try to get it done on the same day. Vfs Birmingham is just 15 mins drive from HCI and we could get both done together. The form is part of the renounciation application but it's not available online. Vfs centre provided it to me on the day.
Hi Suman. While applying for renunciation, for the child, should we be updating their UK passport details or Indian ? Do you know please ?
UK passport details. Children born in the UK does not require renunciation. Only surrender of passport.
Sir im a follower of ur channel from beginning.My wife is md Respiratory Medicine currently doing fellowship in sleep medicine in india.As u have told previously in some live sessions mrcp is must for entering even non training job,but is there any chance that mti recruitment will happen in case of resp medicine in near future or can she join in research side initially without mrcp and latter shift to clinical side by passing mrcp
MTI can bypass MRCP requirements. Research jobs are never advertised as MTI. All research fellow jobs at registrar grade will need GMC registration and MRCP will be a requirement.
Did you have to book 2 appointments i.e. 1 for surrender & 1 for renunciation on the HCI website?
I booked only for surrender.
@@SumanPaulDoc So I've also booked one which is Surrender but in your video you mentioned to book 2 appointments. Secondly the HCI booking site does not allow to book 2 appointments with the same passport no on the same day. How will I get a appointment with the Embassay for witness sign? I lost on this process.
FYI, I've filled the renouce form and also paid for the fees too.

@@ReelShortsTime I'm in the same boat. For now I've booked for renunciation. As you are already aware a 2nd booking on the site with the same passport number is allowed only post 1st appointment or within a day's time of the same. I plan to book for passport surrender appointment post renunciation. A total waste of time, have to take unnecessarily another day off. Wish they had allowed both appointments on the same day and made things easier.
If, after surrendering the Indian passport, you dont get the Surrender certificate immediately and are told to wait for its arrival via a courier, is there a way to track it?

@sumanpauldoc hey, I wanted to know that if ur applying for renunciation of citizenship - do we have to apply for both under 18 and over 18. For ex: I’m applying for my mom and the renunciation application ask for children information so do I fill that (children) section for my mom application for children under 18. And do over 18 have to fill the renunciation form separately.
You have to fill the children section as well as another separate renunciation application

I can’t get appointments on the same day for surrender appointment and renunciation appointment and need to travel in between on my British passport- is that allowed?
In Birmingham, you can simply walk in to VFS for surrender certificate without pre booking, after getting a signature on renounciation form.

What if we just dont use the Indian passport anymore and keep using British passport.. can we skip this renouncing process?
It's illegal to possess an Indian passport after getting a British passport. You can't travel using it. So what's the point of keeping it? You still need Indian visa to travel to India.so having OCI card is much better option

It's sad India does not allow dual citizenship like many other countries. Hopefully Modiji will change this

@@raknoknak Main reason is unable to vote in election. Apart from this I never had plans to stand in election or buy agricultural lands.
As of my knowledge. Modi gov made this fucking decision. Do expect any from him ..
