That "Balakanakamaya.." is the most devout and moving rendering ever....most people who sing it in a classical method like any tyagaraja kriti, cannot bring in that emotion... May be it should always be sung as nonstop free flowing prose...

How soothing and satisfying these renditions are! Modern singers pale in front of Nagaiah's mellifluous singing.
Swargiya Nagayya garu was the first super star of South India. He had no children. Was a very compassionate and humble man. He died as a very poor man. All these gongs are sung by himself. That is really amazing.
While none of us had seen/heard Saint Tyagaraya live, Nagayya garu brought Tyagaraya from heaven to earth by his acting and singing.

Ghantasala was not into playback singing until late 40s. This was well before that. Those days it was important for the actors to sing the songs on their own. That's how we have S. Varalakshmi, Bhanumathi, Nagayya, etc
@spicyjulep I am afraid i disagree with you. The first and the foremost song taught to every Carnatic vocal student is Lambodara Lakumikara. Purandara Dasa still remains the father of Canatic music. That being said, it's extremely inappropriate to compare the musical geniuses of these saints.
