Maura Murray's case was the first episode of "Disappeared" I ever watched, her father broke my heart and her story always stayed with me... Thanks Dr Grande for your analysis!
I would bet my last dollar she disappeared on purpose. She had gotten into legal trouble, she was under a lot of pressure to be perfect, and I think she simply wanted a new life. You also add on that she lied and told her college she had a death in the family, she had a burner phone, a rag was stuffed in her tailpipe. I think it was all staged, including the wreck. I think whoever was helping her was in a car following her, and the plan was likely to talk to a couple witnesses so they could place her at the wreck site, then when no witnesses were there she jumped in the car with the person that was helping her, and simply started a new life.

My guess is more grim. Murray didn't want the bus driver to call the cops b/c she didn't want a DUI. Subsequently, a stranger coaxed or forced her into his vehicle under the pretenses of driving her into town. The stranger then kidnaps and murders Murray. Her remains could be anywhere. And that's as chilling as a winter night in Northern New England.
That's exactly my theory. Murray's clearly had a habit of drinking and driving and was alcoholic. The police said there was an empty dr pepper bottle that smelled like alcohol, as if she was drinking and driving out of a dr pepper bottle to hide it if she were pulled over...also some alcohol from the bottle had splashed onto the ceiling on the car in the wreck. Speaking of wrecks, back to Murray...she started walking away from the scene to avoid a DUI, ran into the guy where the dogs went "bonkers", and was done god know what to, murdered, and disposed of. Too bad. She had a lot of potential if she could have got her mental health under control.

I agree someone picked her up, but maybe she is being kept prisoner in someone’s basement, and not murdered.
It seems likely to me that Maura was a seasoned alcoholic that was able to hide it most of the time when she wanted to (hence nobody seemed to believe she was impaired when she most likely was) but it was starting to catch up to her and she made the poor judgment not to seek help to avoid consequences and she either died of exposure or a stranger that took advantage
She didn't call road side assistance or want the cops to be called because she didn't want to get a DUI.
@Fred Freddy well I'm referring to the fact that he said that everybody that spoke to her seemed to not know that she was impaired and that she had probably gotten away with drunk driving on several occasions before this incident

@@CC-xn5xi Yes, that means that she lied on purpose to the bus driver, saying she HAD ALREADY called AAA Roadside service. I agree with Kat Dodd...she was drunk enough at her small weight to possibly get a DUI so that's why she was worried enough to lie to the bus driver about AAA and plead with him not to call the police. I do think the drinking was getting out of control. Even tho she told the bus driver not to call the police, she knew 'someone' would noticed her recked car and call the police anyway (as well they should) so she left the accident scene with her purse and started walking. She either made it to the woods and the elements got her (but they would have found her body by now...there were extensive searches); or more likely, the poor girl, in her inebriated state, agreed to a ride with a stranger and it turned out really, really bad...her body really could be anywhere by now. I wish she had at least asked the bus driver for a ride to a nearby motel or restaurant to sober up/make phone calls b4 the police located her. She would be alive today...but she was 21 and nothing really bad had happened to her yet, so she figured nothing would.

I think she was trying to avoid a dui, then went away into the woods and died of exposure. The fact they couldn’t find footprints doesn’t surprise me because they couldn’t find her anywhere either. I still pray for her to be found, whatever state she’s in. I did this once in grad school. I came home to visit parents for a weekend, then when time came to leave I left. Told my parents I was going back; told my instructors I was staying an extra day. Then I went and checked into a hotel and just relaxed. The pressure had gotten to me so I was basically hiding out from life. I’m so thankful nothing bad happened to me leaving questions like this for my family and muddying waters for investigators. I’ve always been convinced that she and I were doing the same thing, and it grieves me deeply as it it were my personal problem when people follow what I believe to be a red herring about her trying to disappear. I went back to grad school the next day after my break, so I can’t help thinking she was just going off to enjoy a private bender before giving up drinking because it was starting to cause problems in her life. God bless the family and friends. Can’t blame them for turning over every leaf.
She never entered the tree line. Several dogs lost her scent on the road not too far from the accident. So she must’ve been picked up. Theresa 5 or 6 part series on Amazon prime that shows all of this and showing how competent dogs are with tracking.

Cadaver dogs is THE lead I would follow. Dogs are not prone to lie about scents. She does NOT seem to be a mastermind of planning her life events, so the "planned" scenarios seem incredibly unlikely to me. It's sad to see a young life in a constant s#!÷ storm. Thank you Dr.Grande for looking into this case.
Cadaver dogs get false positives all the time, WTF are you talking about.
Yeah cadaver dogs are known for not being very reliable. They don't lie but they can respond to scents that aren't cadavers . They're dogs not an infallible machine.
I think she was probably killed. Poor thing.predator are opportunistic and she would have been a perfect, vulnerable target.
The guy who owns that house now absolutely refuses to let anyone related to the case back into his house. He has no desire to helo this family get amswers. He is a selfish p.o.s
There's a theory she's buried under a golf course at a country club in the area. It came from a bit of a loon that uploaded some weird Maura Murray videos but from memory it was still eery enough that the few facts around the theory should probably have been looked into. At least more so than funding psychics.
Sylvia Brown told Amanda Berry's mom, that Amanda was dead. Actually, she was very much alive and being held in a house of horrors in Cleveland Ohio.
I remember when that happend and that was just wrong for her mom to be told she was dead when she was alive

The counter to the "a killer just happened to come along and grab her" being unlikely is that so many abduction/murder cases people just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The percentage of men who would do her if they thought they would get away with it is pretty high. Not down around 10%. Much higher.

This case has always gotten a lot of attention and “clairvoyants” seem to always latch on when there’s money to be made. It’s unfortunate. Anyone who is really spiritual would never mess with the family of a missing loved one.

I can’t only imagine how haunting and devestating it must be to see your kid on surveillance tape. You’d just want to reach into the screen and talk to them.
My unfounded suspicion is that she was picked up and give a ride by a killer and was killed in a crime of opportunity. Yes, it is highly unlikely that a killer just happened to be there within minutes of the accident, but highly unlikely things do happen. I am reminded of the case where a man just happened to be hiking by a creek/small river(?) when a semi conscious boy who had fallen into the water upstream by accident floated by. He snatched the boy and raised the boy for eight years until the boy escaped. The chances were incredibly small that a guy with a propensity for kidnapping was in the right place at the right time, but for that boy it did happen.
I agree. My mind automatically goes to the Delphi murders. Something that has never happened before in that town yet it did. Just because something is rare or unrealistic doesn't mean it will never happen:/
I tend to agree with that. What are the chances of a killer driving by and seeing someone in a vulnerable position? It’s actually not that hard for me to believe.
Common things happen way more though. It’s more common that people die outside in the elements then get targeted by a random killer in the area.

She’s got to be dead. She was too erratic to plan a successful disappearance. I think Grande’s theory that she went to a second location and died of exposure seems to fit best. She seemed to be manic and even kind of catatonic at times. She probably did wander into the elements.

I think she was given a ride, was dropped off, died of exposure and the driver won't come forward once he/she realized she was missing out of fear of being accused of causing her death.

I've lived minutes away from where she vanished my whole life. It's really sad driving through there.

@@eadweard. Yeah, driving through the exact spot she was last seen is eerie. A place so familiar to me but where this person just disappeared. Everyone has opinions about it and there's lots of weird things involving the case.
I followed that podcast for awhile, until they went there and stayed at a hotel or something and felt threatened, but couldn't really say why, then it lost all credibility for me and went into entertainment mode and adding some false suspense that come away really cheap for me.
I'd like to know if you live near there do you think it would be easy for a drunk person to get lost in those woods and not be found? It's difficult to tell from things like Google Maps, if you have never been there.

I remember this case. I grew up an hour away from where she went missing-this case was a huge shock to everyone-especially in a remote place like Woodsville. People do go missing up north but usually they’re able to be found-even if they aren’t alive. My heart goes out to her family-it’s incredibly sad that they still have no idea what happened to her or if she is even still alive.
Ask the tow truck driver, Lavoie, he knows what happened to Maura. He didn't abduct her or anything, but he helped in the cover-up

I've never known how to feel about "psychics." On the one hand I feel that it's unethical and rather sleazy for these frauds to make money by scamming people. On the other hand, my mother once went to a medium, who really only told her what she wanted to hear, yet my mom felt a lot better about some things regarding her mom which had bothered her for many years. My mom had always felt guilty about not being able to be with her mother when she passed. The medium told her my grandmother said she waited for her to leave, because she couldn't go with my mother's energy holding her there. My mom was very relieved and has felt much better ever since. So in a way, I appreciate that mediums sometimes do give people what they need in order to move on and be at peace.
Interestingly, the medium did say something to my mom that she couldn't possibly have had knowledge of or looked up on the internet. It was about the man who used to own our camp, and the specific way he always greeted my mom when they saw one another. I have to admit that intrigued me as a sceptic...

This is why I love Dr. Grande. He can shoot down the whimsical nonsense about so called people with psychic / clairvoyance abilities with a concise, realistic explanation.
It never ceases to blow my mind how many people in the population do not have critical thinking skills or understand the logic behind the concepts of deductive and inductive reasoning as well as falsifiability.

Maybe she had depression, school, her boyfriend, family, her dad being pissee, head injury.

Followed this case for so long. My conclusion is she hitch hiked a ride with someone and met foul play. Especially given the fact the dogs lose her scent a little bit down the road.

I would also like for the Doctor to analyse John Edward of the famous John Edward show. Years ago I watched his show and thought , oh it seems so real but after much research it seems his show was clearly edited to look like he had more »hits » than misses. A lot of people are searching for something they can believe in, some way to find out if their loved ones are ok and they can be taken advantage of by these people. So sad.

I've followed this case since day one and I'm surprised at some of the things you've come up with that I never even heard. I sure wish we'd get definitive answers in this case.
I’ve been following Maura’s case since she first went missing. My heart goes out to her family and loved ones - I hope they find answers one day.
Dr. Grande - would also be very interested in your take on Leah Roberts, another young woman who disappeared under odd circumstances. As well as Kenny Veach, an adult male who disappeared in the Nevada desert. There are so many more, of course, but for some reason I always check up on these particular three cases for updates.
Totally with you on the psychics. They are so delusional in truly believing they are "helping" others, but what they are doing is very very cruel, distracting, and selfish. Same goes for "mediums." Give me a f*cking break.
I've studied this case in depth for awhile (as much as a rando on the internet can anyway.)
She came from an incredibly driven and ambitious home... I would say a possibly very toxic level of ambition. The Murray's expected excellence from their children, hence her attendance at unbelievably prestigious schools. She made a tiny mistake that got her booted from West Point... I truly think this absolutely would have crushed her. I believe the drinking, very minor credit card fraud, odd eating habits, clear emotional stress, etc... were all manifestation of years of pressure finally setting in and pummeling this lovely, bright young woman into despair, hopelessness, heartbreak and death. Honestly, I am very sad for her parents loss, but I think the family dynamic is a massive component here. Hopefully they have gained some introspection from this tragedy, but I doubt it, proud people rarely relinquish their hubris.

Fantastic video Dr. Grande 👍 Your humor and analysis are directly on point, and that looks like a very nice shirt 👕 you are wearing. This is a very sad case. To think that a student who attended West Point would end her own life is terrible. I think the pressure of trying to be a successful young adult was too much for Maura. Working 💪, going to college and trying to maintain a relationship is a lot of stress. I started drinking alcohol 🍸 in college to relieve stress. I used that as a crutch for 15 years until I decided to quit at the age of 34. Everything was too much for Maura Her father realized it, that's why he was visiting her to offer his support. Sadly, Maura just gave up. Our society needs to do more to address mental illness and provide counseling for youth in particular.
I pick up a stranded woman on the side of the road. Then I drop her off safe and sound at her requested destination. A few days later I discover that the woman is missing and I was the last person to have seen her. I'm not coming forward. That's a hard pass on signing up to be the prime suspect in the kidnapping and murder of a young woman.
I think a lot of people, maybe 50 - 60 % would do just as you say. I don't know
what I'd do ?? If you come forward your going to be a suspect, and go thru hours
of interrogation at the least -- just for being an honest good person. Is it worth it ?
I may just decide to let it work itself out, and save myself a lot of grief.
Thanks so much for this analysis! I have been interested in the Maura Murray case for years. One thing I would take a little bit of issue with is the idea that it is unlikely that she was killed by someone who picked her up on the road, because of the unlikelihood that a killer would "just happen" to be the one who picked her up. Another way this could have happened is that some guy, not necessarily a serial killer or someone who initially intended to kill her, picked her up and either made advances that she tried to resist, or just outright raped her, and then he killed her. Many crimes are committed on impulse. I don't necessarily believe that this is what happened. Another theory is that she was picked up by someone who did not kill her, but was taken to another location where she had some kind of trouble that lead to her murder. She wouldn't necessary have been "dropped off and wandering around in the snow." She does not seem to have had a concrete destination in mind, so possibly would have accepted an invitation to attend a party, or an offer for a place to stay. I just believe that the idea that she may have ended up being killed after being picked up on the road is not so far-fetched as people seem to indicate. If this happened, it would explain the other issues: The indications that she was picked up on the road, the lack of footprints leading to the woods, and the lack of a body (and there was an extensive search for a body). She could have been killed miles from the accident site and her body disposed of almost anywhere.
Exactly. I d-o think it was a crime of opportunity. Someone saw this young girl who was drunk walking along the side of the road, offered her a ride, took advantage of her and she was killed. Her body really could be anywhere. I wish she would have either stayed with her car, or if she was worried about a DUI, had the bus driver drop her off at the nearest motel or restaurant, sobered up, made phone calls to get her car towed to the nearest fix-it place until she was located by the police. But she was 23 and naive, like we all were (at least -I- definitely was). Poor girl.
Yes. Instead of asking how likely it is that a homicidal maniac would have driven along just as Maura is starting her walk to the nearest town, the better question is how likely is it that a slightly antisocial guy between the ages of 20 and 40 who maybe has some anger at the world and women (I believe this personality type is not so uncommon in remote areas like this) happens along in his pickup truck, acts friendly and offers to give her a lift, and then decides once she's in his truck that he should try to make a night of it with her. He turns off on his private road to pick something up from his house (that's his pretext), gets her inside, and then comes on to her. When she rebuffs him, he rapes her. He kills her to hide the rape. This is common. It's not that the person is a homicidal maniac. He's killing the woman to hide the rape. The FBI has studies on this - killers admit that they killed to destroy the witness to the rape - the victim. What's the alternative? Rape her and then drive her to town so she can call police? Of course she will. I always thought this case could have been solved by figuring out who takes that route home on a regular basis. The man in the truck was heading home that night. Either from work, or from a bar or something. His home is in a five-mile radius. The area is not densely populated. They should have been able to figure out who it was -- or at least develop a small list of possible suspects and then keep on them.
@@theglobalexposer4881 Yes, that is a much more likely scenario. The other scenario which I think is far more likely than a serial killer just happening to drive by involves college boys headed for the nearly ski report, which was apparently a college kid destination. This idea has been mentioned in other forums and in the documentary. A boy or several boys could have picked her up, and who knows what happened from there. Also what I have continually pointed out is that whoever picked her up did not necessarily kill her. She could have been taken to a house, to a party, even to the ski resort. Once there someone could have killed her after attempted rape, or she may have died from an overdose of drugs and alcohol and the body hidden.

Yes, the room was looking slanty yesterday.
I live only about 30 minutes from where she disappeared so I have some knowledge and theories of my own. The road she had the last accident on is a very curvy, windy road, but she managed to have an accident on one of the few straight parts. The phone call she received at work from her sister was a mystery for several years, it wasn't until fairly recently her sister finally said it was from her and what it was about. That phone call she apparently told Maura she was going back to rehab for her alcoholism. I think Maura herself was an alcoholic, she packed her room because she planned to have one final alcohol bender before she too checked herself into rehab. She probably knew how tough it was going to be for her parents having two children in rehab for alcohol. At least that is what I think happened, but I don't have any idea what really happened after that accident. I think she was probably drunk and took off before the police could arrive and probably died in the woods.
Also I want to point out that the book that was found in her car was about people who disappeared in the same woods she dissappeared from. The book is called 'Not without peril.' Ironically I just found my copy of that book last week that I bought after she first disappeared.
I hope she is found someday. Truly sad case for her family.

@@laurat1129 I've wondered that too. I think it was a combo of a lot of things. I don't think they expected her disappearance to be so well known. Probably shame and embarrassment played a part as well.
That’s a very good explanation but it doesn’t explain why her remains have never been found because she couldn’t of gotten very far that night in the woods?
I still think the bus driver is the perpetrator because everybody just believes his story and he had golden opportunity and he was a strange dude on top of it

I was going to Umass Amherst when she went missing...I was actually skiing up in Francoinia, NH a week before she vanished (Franconia is near Haverhill, NH)....I recall this case quite well as news went around the town and campus fast.
I used to think she was the unfortunate victim of the elements, but with more information that's come to light, plus the very un-cooperativeness of the NH state police with the family and public, I have to wonder more if Maura Murray was met with foul play.
I think she got into someone's vehicle in those few minutes between being last seen by her car and the local police arriving at the scene, a window of less than 10 mins. Her leaving the area in a vehicle would really explain the loss of scent, lack of footprints etc.
Netflix did a six parter on this. I wouldn’t have watched it if I knew it had no ending!

@@garmtpug She's been missing for 17 years and no one seems to know what happened to her. That's how they came up with the six part series. Granted, it's the lack of evidence and unusual set of circumstances surrounding her disappearance that makes it all the more chilling.
@@ScottyRules33 Unfortunately, there are a pretty big number of people in this country who have disappeared without a trace and have never been found. It's not that unusual. Often times producers make programs about pretty young women disappearing as the subjects because that draws more viewers.

I think many grieving people cling to psychics because they can't stand the fact that someone is gone and they cannot find that person. It's like a form of hope.
Would you do a video on why people don't seem to take into consideration consequences when committing crimes? I'm claustrophobic and the idea of a jail cell door closing is equivalent to being buried alive. I don't get why people don't think about spending their life locked up when doing or planning their crime i.e. Jodi Aries, Chris Watts, etc

I know of one case where a psychic was brought in from New England to a rural area in California and she adequately described where the loved one's body would be found. She was quite specific as to certain details such as the unique color of a barn, a specific mile number marker, and one or two other things. When the child's body was found, it was exactly where she said it would be found. It's the only case I've ever heard of where a psychic was actually spot on.

I’m only minutes away from the school she disappeared from, so I’ve heard about this one a lot.. it’s been a bizarre one.. fairly different from the somewhat typical circumstances that seem to outline disappearances.. she seemed to be having a mental health crisis, that was building up over time.. I’m sure her family has been wrecked with it, I really really hope they get some kind of an answer sooner than later, especially at this point..

Just watched the documentary on Hulu, what happened to the other alcohol? When her car was found the state trooper said they found a receipt showing she bought a box of wine, vodka and Baileys Irish creme. The box of wine was found behind the drivers set, but they didn't say anything about the vodka and the bailey Irish creme?
