There are a lot of terminally ill people diagnosed 20 years ago. It happened to my aunt, she lived into her 90s. so you just keep going. Hope you feel and do well.

I knew Hoover back in the day. He was a good investigative dog but once he had a taste of those artisanal dog biscuits, he spiraled downward into a life of addiction. Losing his investigating job was hard on the old boy and he really began an even more severe dependency to Beggin Strips. I hope Hoover gets the help he needs so he can get clean and put his sniffer to use once again.

That is so, so often the case. A lot of young women find "bad boys" incredibly exiting, and live long enough to find out that bad boys are just really bad people. It's the same way the other way around, too. Horrible people come in all genders and colors imaginable, and we need to keep our eyes peeled at all times. It's a sad and intim fact of our lives now...

Some of these disappearances are astounding. Not like they’re happening in the wilds of Alaska or deep in the Amazon. Just poof, gone after a seemingly normal college kid evening. In a relatively small and populated area. Just… gone. So little evidence or answers (almost none) has to be excruciating for loved ones.

I know. The poor families must be devastated, and I can only imagine what it must be to lose your child like that. I think of my own boys and I know, that would come close to killing me if one vanished like that.
The US is huge. People have disappeared in urban areas after having a single car accident late at night when their car ends up down an embankment in thick brush. Millions of drivers pass by, but the area has no foot traffic. Eventually, years later, CalTrans or PG&E discovers the wreck doing maintenance. People drive into canals.
It’s frustrating just as a viewer so I can’t imagine having a loved one disappear. The not knowing sounds like a living hell
its serial killers - we have all heard about how many are operating. and its probably underestimated! covering up abuse/ scandal is the RCC's speciality - so Hoover might be the only one on the right track - sucks that hoover is caught in a vacuum...
I cant forget the one lady, who fell from her attic inside her wall. That mustve been the loneliest she ever felt, in a bustling city full of people around her. It was thought she fell in trying to save her cat, in this claustrophobic small space, with no way to even turn around. The next tenants found her bones, they had lived months with her body. Sometimes you can go missing and still remain so close.

My cat went missing when I was like 19 and I was a freaking wreck. I would drive around sobbing for hours, hanging up posters. So I cannot even fathom my child or a loved one going missing. My heart aches for them and I hope they get answers.

The bloodhound search was almost 2 months after the disappearance, I wonder at that bloodhound's success rate after 7 weeks. Dr. G says a police dog tracked Joshua, I wonder how long after the disappearance.
@@joemcmillan2089 it was not police dog, it was a dog, that family brought out. But bloodhound must be at least lead to the most likely place of someone's step. Police detectives stayed so jealous and didn't like, that someone but not them uses dogs, means doing self investigation, by doing this action, intruding in their work in such a manner to find a trace, that they can not find, their team didn't want to seem weak among others.

I never said this was a police dog.
In the spring I was involved in a search for a missing man that was distraught. His vehicle was found near a semi-desert wilderness area with a lot of scrub brush. The PD had searched the most likely area with a ground team, several cadaver dogs and a drone and found nothing. The family was interested in a search of an adjacent area and that was the area I was involved in and we found no trace. Later the Sheriff brought in another dog and searched with no success. A few months later, person walking their dog found the man’s body under brush in an area that had been searched. He had taken his own life and made efforts to conceal himself. I never received details on the exact location. My take on search dogs is until these search dogs can speak English, I’m not inclined to trust them. That is unless they show me where the body is located.
OMG I went to St. Benedicts and my husband went to St. John’s. My husband (now ex-husband) told me of the many homosexual advances and intrigues of the monks on campus. It was the fabric of the campus especially in the dormitories. If anything nefarious happened look at the monks!
I’ve always thought his death could be related to meeting up with a gay guy. Or, maybe he was embarrassed to tell his family and friends that he was gay. And possibly committed suicide. A very sad story. 💔

Yep. I’m his same age and friends with a connected case where the young man ended up murdered a week before. PIs found that Josh was investigating the monks at the Abbey for SA of vulnerable students… just look into it. There are many cases of monks SA these 18-20 year old guys. Josh was investigating it and catfishing them to get proof is what I’ve been told by friends who went to college with Josh. He wanted to blow the whistle and there was some kind of a threat, stalking or a break in of his dorm shortly before he went missing if I remember correctly. Dr Grande didn’t mention that the college got a restraining order against Joshes father and family for bringing search dogs and PIs to campus to conduct searches. The Abbey wouldn’t let police or search dogs come in without a warrant (which was obtained a lot later and searched). There’s a lot more there
I listened to the Simply Vanished podcast. It is a brilliant podcast about that case if you want to learn more I recommended. I hope they find him. So sorry for his family.
@@JackieGladney Wow! A lot of that information was not in the Unsolved Mysteries episode. Example: Josh catfishing the monks, or that his room was broken into or whatever happened, or the fact his father has a restraining order from the school. Crazy! I feel like that's so important and should've been in the show.

Sounds like an open and shut case to me: he drowned and authorities were never able to find the body. The fact that the authorities are convinced he is not in there does not mean he is not; we've seen this scenario before and someone else finds the body after the police did a "thorough" search.
I think we need to check into Hoover's whereabouts on the night in question. Does he have a solid alibi? The whole "I tracked him going towards the lake" thing could be a ruse to misdirect.
Fifi the poodle was his alibi but poodles are notorious for doing anything for a dog yummy. Teacups are the worst.

I live about 50 miles from there, over the years there has be ALOT of college aged kids that have disappeared, and a lot of other kids are found in water. I have had a couple of friends who went to that college and I went there a couple of times, its creepy.
How many is "a lot", specifically?
@@eadweard. I'd have to go back and count but I'm sure you could look it up if you really wanted to know. There's a few colleges in that area and St Cloud State is one of those that is considered a "party college " and that town is pretty crazy even on a good night

Yeah, in all honesty, I don't entirely agree with Dr. Grande’s analysis of this case. Well, part of it, at least. I believe that the drowning theory is the most likely one, partially due to what you pointed out, which is that college-aged individuals drowning in lakes due to intoxication has happened many times before. That's only part of my reasoning, though.

There have been many college students who drove to "meet" someone they met online, only to be murdered once they got there. Happened in Texas to an A&M student, who drove for the meeting & was murdered.

The minute I heard he had left his wallet, contacts, glasses, coat and belt I think it was at his apartment it rubbed me the wrong way. My son is that age. There is no way they are going out without at least some combination of those items. Which led me to question did he actually return home? Did he actually return home with Nick? And something actually happened after. There was two hours between when Nick's keycard was used and when campus was alerted. I find it odd at that age you would contact campus if your friend wasnt home two hours after you. I would assume they hooked up with someone and are sleeping at their place. If he apparently was at a party and didnt come home naturally one would think he met a girl and will be back in the morning. I think reporting it at 4:20am was odd. Sometimes kids go for food after parties, pass out at parties etc so I dont know why you would panic yet. The Nick gentlemen seemed nice and genuine but I still find that odd. I would like to see a timeline list of everyone who came in with a keycard during that time. Did he actually go back to his room. Contacts and glasses are there so I'm curious his prescription. How far could he see and after a few drinks without glasses how much worse would his vision have been? I feel there are many unanswered questions.
They had to badge in to get into their apartments. Josh did not badge back in after leaving at 11:06, which is why it is assumed he did NOT come back home. However, it's not unusual for doors to be propped open etc so you never know. The intriguing thing for me is that someone was at Josh's computer listening to music and manually skipping songs between 11:52 PM and 12:32 AM. Is it possible Josh did make it back and then left again at 12:30? Was one of his roommates using his computer? We know Nick wasn't there, but he had other roommates as well. They reported him missing the following day at 4:20 PM not AM after he missed a meeting and a mock trial practice (which was not like him). I think they assumed earlier in the day he just stayed somewhere else after the party and realized it was serious later when he didn't show up for his comittments.

If he was using female profiles to meet men, it's not hard to imagine one of those men becoming enraged when Joshua showed up to their date instead of a woman. (No judgment - it would've been very difficult for Joshua to be openly bisexual in his situation.) I have to wonder how well the police looked over his Yahoo Personals contacts.

@@adachikae He may have been doing that as a way to get nudes from men. There were nude pictures of both men and women found on his computer. It doesn't necessarily mean he was meeting men under the pretense that he was a woman
Originally the police did not look super into it. In 2008 they were able to recover the files that were "wiped" and just NOW released a series of photos of men that were having conversations with Josh via Yahoo, They released in the hopes people could identify the mean for police to track down and have conversations with (not that they are suspects per se but to get more leads)

I think that if he drowned in the lake, some trace of him would probably be found, a part of his body at least, a shoe. They find bodies in lakes years after the fact. It's not like it's a river with a rushing current, which could sweep him out to sea. It's not like there are crocs in minnesota.
I’ve worked with a few law enforcement dive teams and they usually use sonar to scan and then send in a diver if they see something of interest. The precision of the sonar is such that they can identify a beer can or cinder block on the bottom.

Reasons to refuse a polygraph:
1. If you pass the test the police won’t eliminate you as a suspect. If they don’t trust their own test why should you?
2. If you mistakenly fail the test now you become a suspect. This may distract the police from putting their energy into finding the real culprit. Worse, it may prejudice their investigation and cause them to manufacture evidence against you. They may do this consciously or subconsciously.
3. Why create evidence which may be used against you? Passing the test will have little value to you in a defense in court. There’s no benefit to you.
4. A significant minority of the population will fail these tests even if telling the truth. You may be one of these people. You don’t know if you are one of these people. Why take that risk?
These tests should be outlawed in criminal investigations.
Theres a podcast similar to Serial about this case. It's called simply vanished. The most infuriating detail is the police never searched his computer
They did but it had been wiped by the time they got it. The big mistake was not locking off Josh's room/computer in the first place which allowed for someone to wipe it. Eventually in 2008 they were able to recover most of the items on the hard drive (once better tech came out) but of course by then it's much harder to solve the case after so much time
I just finished the podcast! It was so emotional. Very sad case and I truly hope that someday they will find Josh.
I've met two people in my life that I've known for years. Both of these individuals was complete success stories from the time they was literally like 16. The dreams they set as teenagers was eventually accomplished by the time they was in their late twenties. Both individuals at different periods of time just randomly snapped, I mean just a complete breakdown mentally and physically. Both individuals never drank never use drugs never committed crimes, and one day it was like someone turned on a light switch in both. Neither one of them knew each other and it didn't happen at the same time I'm just saying I know two people who's just seem to snap out of nowhere. And completely ruin their lives and destroy them in a matter of a year. Me and my friends often talk about it and say what the hell you think happened. Because after a few years it was like they came back to reality. Completely lost everything and everyone around them but came back to reality. So I am convinced sometimes people just lose it

I was the one that enjoyed life, went to all the campus parties, and off campus parties, slept the entire week of thanksgiving break, was never in a sorority because I was a GDI, graduated, and still got a great job with a higher than average salary. I guess I was the average student taking advantage of living 5 hours away from mom and dad.

Can you analyze the 1984 cold case of Kelly Disney from Lincoln County Oregon! I worked out there for the Sheriff's Office for almost a decade working in the jail '12 to '21 including as a criminal investigator within the jail. It's one of the cases that the cold case detectives are still working & it still haunts the County almost 4 decades later...
With a last name like Disney, any number of satanic events could've happened to her.

I think I read something about her case, if I recall correctly, it must have been a couple of years ago.
I had stumbled upon a brilliant Documentary about the PoS serial killer J.A. Ackroyd, and out of curiosity I read about other unsolved cases that could have been related to him.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, my memory isn’t as sharp as it used to be, but as I recall it; she did disappear from Highway 20 while walking there late in the evening or at night, but detectives had reason to suspect that she had been picked up by "friends", who sexually assaulted, murdered her, and left her body in the woods, or something like that - but not enough evidence to charge anyone!?
@@gorillaguerillaDK I initially thought the same and I think they even thought Green River Gary but I think they alibi out, I'm not sure. The deputy that was the last to see her that night too is someone who passed away some years ago but I don't know if they really ever got all the info about their interactions that night...
And yes, she disappeared off Highway 20 which was the stomping grounds from that serial killer Ghosts of Highway 20 (amazing documentary) but that part of Highway 20 is what connects the town of Newport to Toledo so it's well traveled to be honest though back then it might have been a little less traffic, it's still near two different city limits.

It wouldn't be the first time a LEO was the last one to interact with a young woman who suddenly disappeared right after - and it wouldn't be the first time a LEO wasn't suspected of any wrongdoings until much later.
But just because it has happened elsewhere of course doesn't mean it happened there as well, a d haven't they investigated where he went after the interaction?
Wasn't there something about someone who had said they had witnessed what happened, but had been too afraid to step in and too afraid to say anything?

I had never heard of this case and it breaks my heart. I want to say RIP Joshua, but that's not possible. Missing people are definitely the most tragic. I hope his family finds answers, or at least some peace.

Maybe he was going undercover when assuming female personas investigating the rumored monk's crimes. As well, if his investigations were deleted from his computer at the same time as his internet history was, it starts to seem like maybe there is a link there. The pieces do seem to fit together from what I have heard in this video.
Even a really reliable bloodhound would have trouble following a trail that cold in an urban environment. Even the handler would probably doubt the dog.
Once the air track of the person (their smell in the air) has dispersed, they rely on articles or things they've touched, or maybe something they tracked on their shoes.
Conversely, in a wilderness search, the trail can be followed for much longer because they can also follow the environmental change due to the person passing. Things like misplaced earth, bent blades of grass, shuffled leaves, broken twigs, etc all have a smell and make it clear that someone has passed there. They also may have touched branches, trees, or anything organic with their skin, which will retain the individual's unique scent longer to confirm the identity of the track-layer (some dogs are trained to indicate whenever they find such an identifier to keep their handler in the know, and so they can mark it on GPS or in the field).

Edit: Also, since the dog in question and his handler were independents and not on a formal task force or with a well-reputed organization, they may be known to just be bad at their jobs and refuse to retire, and inexperienced folks keep hiring them, to the chagrin of local law enforcement.
I don't trust the police checking lakes for submerged car's, let alone solo people.

What happened to 14 years old Jenny Lin, who in 1994 was murdered in her Castro Valley home?
Could you also check into the unsolved murder of Bing Woon Joe, 9-15-95 in Portland, Oregon. Lisa Norrell (15) went missing on November 6, 1998, after leaving a quinceañera rehearsal class in nearby Antioch and returning home alone. Her body was found near a landscaping business on the highway between Pittsburg and Antioch on November 14th. She had been strangled to death. I have always admire your bloodhound detective work along with your sharp analogous, Dr. Grande!

Governments in North America should be doing more to investigate why there are so many missing and murdered male college students too.
This is my first time hearing of this and Collegeville is only like 10miles from my appartment. It's in a large beautiful forest that I could see a person's body being hidden out there and nobody ever finding it.

He was recently doing well for a couple of months. His focus was towards his dogs and such. Then he just passed.
Thanks again for your analysis of the mysterious disappearance of Josh Guimond, Dr. Grande. My concern is that, if he was going out to meet someone on that cold night, why didn't he take a coat with him? There is also the question as to why the police disregarded the findings of the bloodhound, which suggests that the police might have known something that they chose not to share with the public. And really, how accurate could the police searching the lakes for Josh's body be when conducted months later? His body might have been washed up on the shore and been eaten by wild animals and the remaining bones being dispersed by the animals in the intervening months. Of course, the murder theory is the most plausible, with Josh meeting someone in a vehicle on the bridge, where the police dog traced him to but had no further scent of him after that point. Another possibility is that his roommate was waiting for him in his car on the bridge and murdered him, although the time he left Josh's ex-girlfriend's party would make this unlikely unless she knowingly provided him with an alibi because he returned to the dorm roughly an hour or so later than it would have taken for him to return from her party. It was supposedly only seven minutes away by car.
@@cht2162 if he was going to do that he could've joined the abbey that literally was a 100 yards away from him on campus. Very doubtful he'd just disappear off the face of the earth
1) The reason why the police dismissed Hoover is due to his training. His handler was a true crime fan that didn't attend any true training or classes but simply self-taught herself and Hoover via watching videos and true crime shows, etc. He wasn't reliable unfortunately
2) The campus was very small, with most walks being less than 5 minutes. Walking on campus without a jacket even when cold isn't implausible especially if you were only planning on going a short distance (which he was with the party). In the case of the potential meetup, walking to the bridge or parking lot from the party also would've been short distance and then he would've been in a presumably heated car. Not unusual for college kids to not have their coat (I didn't wear mine when going from dorm to dorm and lived on a small campus)
3) They searched the lakes shortly after his disappearance but did ran into MN winter weather rather quickly and decided to wait to do more/more extensive water searches until the spring. The area he likely would've fallen in (if he did) was really shallow (3 feet deep tops) so it's unlikely he wouldn't have been seen early on if he had fallen in
4) There were two witnesses who saw a man who fit Josh's description on the bridge that night. They did not mention anyone else around nor any cars at the time.
It was late at night when Nick left Katie's apartment. It's very possible that Katie incorrectly remembered the time that Nick left Katie's place. No one else was there to verify the time he left and there were no surveillance cameras to time-stamp his departure, so it's possible that the time she gave was just an estimate, and was wrong. Nick was planning to attend law school the following year, so it's unlikely that he would do something so criminal to jeopardize his future.

The guy in the orange car was most likely the campus drug dealer, IMO. Listening to the "Simply Vanished" podcast, multiple SJU men were approached and almost kidnapped near/on campus in the weeks before and after Joshua's disappearance. One man was grabbed by four men in a truck/SUV, but was able to escape a short time after. I concur with you Dr. Grande, most likely foul play was involved. Love your content, insight and wit. :)

very sad case. idk if it is something youd do for a video typically but id be interested to see your analysis of the strange man caught on video creeping on van life vlogger Alyssa Vanilla here on youtube who seemed awfully like a predator of some kind on the prowl. odd that he originally claimed to be checking on her cause he makes sure people dont need water, then returned with some weird alternate personality saying he saw a different guy creeping on her with binoculars and told him he offers people water ???? which is exactly what he himself had just done? it was almost like he was warning her about himself
I saw that video too and commented on it. Don't know that there's enough to go on though. But it was definitely good to see that she got the hell out of there.

Yeah, it's a grift. An old one. Create a threat, then step in as the solution to the threat. She is scared of one guy, so, for this apparent knight in shining armor, she let's her guard down, and let's this guy get closer. ...... He's experienced at doing this, he's done it before, and he will end up hurting a girl. I'd guess his targets are usually younger. 10-13 yr olds. Kids that would be in the park, or walking the neighborhood, alone. Easy to have different versions of this tactic. eg. 'Oh, I'm with Neighborhood Watch, I saw you walking alone. I wanted to make sure you were ok. Where do you live? Do your parents know where you are?" etc, grill them for info.
Hope she stays safe. She should park next to a cop shop, in front of an all night diner, laundromat. Find city cameras, obvious ones, park in their sight. Put signs on the outside of the windows, "External Cameras Monitoring This Location" ... "911 Enabled Bluetooth Alarms Monitoring Vehicle"

Did they have any proofs that he had any casual encounters with strangers from internet before? I don't recall that they spoke about it in the episode.

No proof after looking at his emails etc. However I don't believe they are able to actually get into his Yahoo personal messages because Josh deleted the software on October 28th, several days before he went missing. He also reported a user to Yahoo for violation of policies shortly before deleting his Yahoo stuff and immediately after being on the phone with an unknown person for about a half hour. Not sure it's related to his disappearance at all but things to think about.

My husband attended St. John's in the graduate theological school from 2007-2009. I don't recall anyone mentioning him missing. There were still posters up for Jacob Wetterling around campus though. I don't think the 2 are related just odd to not have Joshua's missing poster up (if there was a poster). I lived there from 2008-2009 after I married my husband and he finished his last year there.
The surrounding communities were extremely shaken up after Jacob went missing. This was before they found his body. It had a huge impact on the whole area.
My guess would be the simplest, he got drunk (maybe it didn't hit until after he left the party) and drowned in a lake. There is a lot of water in the area of all sizes.
No weird vibes from the campus, the monks, etc. It's just a normal university. My husband and I aren't Catholic, so no reason to side with the university.
My husband just told me he saw Joshua's posters around campus too. My bad.
