*Some females have this problem as well. Although maybe not to the same extent that most guys have it. Its like we're expected to be self sufficient, and overcome **_our own_** problems despite any physical or emotional or monetary setbacks. Millenials, most of us, have been conditioned to be independent without accepting or even asking for help. We're taught to value independence over pride. Which is a dam☆ shame, because everyone needs a little (or a lot) of help from time to time; its nothing to be ashamed of asking for or needing! That notion needs to be in the garbage!*

@@Griselda_Puppy My mum didn't want to be a burden on anyone during her seventeen year long on-and-off fight with cancer. But she did accept help by professionals. She told me that my granny had been a hypochondriac who often lay in bed, loading off all the chores on her, so she knew exactly what it could feel like to others and became quite the opposite of her mom in this regard. So there may be very different reasons our personality gets shaped in similar directions I guess.

The shackles his religion put on him, the expectations it might have provoked in him about how he should be living by 30 years old, could have been liberating to leave behind?
Yes, it would mean leaving his family, but if he felt he was letting them down or was a burden then he might have felt it was a kindness to go? (not knowing it's a living torture not knowing what happened to your loved one)
I don't know if suicide is against their teachings, if it is then moving on to pastures new could have meant he had everything to begin again.
Once gone it's difficult to admit what happened and get in contact again with your old life, all the fuss that's made about you going missing, how can you just pop up again and say you're alright?
I hope he is still alive, maybe one day he'll have the strength to let his family know.

Gosh this thread rings true to me. I got to 30 and had nothing, growing up in a close religious community it was like I was finished before I was begun. Thank God I was blessed, oddly I nearly died and that lead to me becoming pregnant with my son, my life went in a whole different direction but I remember that lonelines, not to mention poverty. This story really spoke to me. The whole thing lead me to empower my own children, my eldest is now off at uni with his girlfriend of 5yrs. I think Stephen put way way too high a standard upon himself and it was impossible to live up to. His family clearly loved him, I wonder if society and the religious community didn't back that up.

@@jmklind thanks so much, I lost two friends that way, both on farms in rural areas, seems to be a particular issue in that community.
The cheese is interesting. Either a purchase for Christmas, surely to share, showing future orientation, or a sign of erratic purchasing? Nothing else he did looked particularly erratic, it's possible to argue the road trips we're erratic, kinda, esp with money probs...plus we don't know what the landlord said to him on the phone that could cause distress.
Someone suggested he was vanishing to start a new life because he couldn't come out in a religious community, that's very plausible. He said his relationship issues would soon be resolved maybe he was travelling outside his area to meet a guy? He could have encountered someone who took advantage or exception.

My brother was coming from Austin to Canada in April 1985 and we had to search for him, found missing, and later found he had had a witness see his car go over a cliff near Henderson. Later they found his body in a Las Vegas morgue, where he had been for 3 months with his car in the demolition lot, and his Drivers License and Identification in the car. Only when a Travel Agency got involved that they discovered this. Why this happened in LV explains the lack of empathy on the police advising the family. This relates a bit to this coverup here....🤒. We had to search every place, including Amarillo, I remember they served soup made from pig stomach there... it was definitely Mexican.

Man, I feel for this Steven kid. I remember trying to figure out life in my late teens and early 20's. It was not easy. I can only imagine what sort of pressure he was probably feeling as a result of high expectations from his upbringing, and very possibly, from himself.

For an LDS member yes, 30 very much is a critical milestone, especially for finding a spouse. When your two-digit age starts with a 2, everyone and their auntie is bending over backwards to introduce you to potential candidates. When you turn 30 that stops and you're more or less considered a lost cause, especially if you're male and without a steady job that pays enough to support a stay-at-home wife and a bunch of kids. And marriage and family are central to LDS culture and doctrine.

I suspect that I am not the only one who listens for and delights in the inevitable humor quips in Dr Grande's content. As they are frequently found, it is apparent that he can keep it up (meaning the humor of course)

This case makes me feel bad. The guy seemed like a genuinely decent guy who wasnt doing anything sketchy or questionable who fell on hard times and was depressed, and one day he just disappeared. Thats kind of sad.
