  • Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Vent Control Valve - P0446 -testing and replacement. This specific vehicle is a '97 Nissan Maxima. Check with your vehicle's repair manual for testing parameters.
    The EVAP canister vent control valve is located on the EVAP canister and is used to seal the canister vent. This solenoid responds to signals from the ECM. When the ECM sends an on signal, the coil in the solenoid valve is energized. A plunger will then move to seal the canister vent. The ability to seal the vent is a necessary part of the diagnosis algorithms for other evaporative loss system components.

    Hi, just need to tell you that I'm a woman and I fixed my 2001 Chevy Blazer PO446 by pulling out the 10A Engine 1 fuse (which was NOT burn't out), wiping the connection with my fingers, pushing it back into place and giving it a hard push in and my truck runs great now...a quick fix and didn't cost me a penny !

    I was really impressed with the caliber of the video/audio. So many are full of shaking and quick motions that make them hard to watch or contain outside noises that have nothing to do with the video. So kudos in making an easy to watch video. I found the testing contained in this video extremely valuable. However, as mentioned by a previous commenter, the video stopped short of the actual replacement of the value. That may have been due to the use of gasket maker to fill a leak previously or the implication at the beginning of the video that the replacement only involved the removal of two bolts. But being a novice with car repairs I'm not sure which. That said, thanks again for making a great video.

    Thanks for your instructions, thanks to them have I been able to rule out many thinks that could be the problem. On the hardness connected to the vent valve I only get around 1 volt or less. It seems i cannot establish contact the holes of the hardness might be too small? I see you can easily make contact with the multimeter. Thanks man

    What would cause a has leak in this area when topping off your tank? I like to keep my tank full so every few days i top off the tank . And sometimes gas leaks by the rear drivers wheel. There's alot of snow on the ground right now so I can't really check too good. But there's no check lights on the dash and she runs great with good gas mileage .

    i used an old computer power supply for the 12 volts. jumper the green and black wire on the 24/26 connector. hearing the solenoid click DOES NOT verify that the valve works. I have one now that the plunger is rusted shut which happens a lot and the solenoid clicks. a service manual will tell how to test on the car. or remove, with 12v applied you should be able to blow air through from one port to the other. no 12volts ports are blocked. mine is blocked constantly.

    Nissan Sentra 2000 1.8 liter. Getting code 1448. "EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve (Open)" There are 3 EVAP system solenoids for this model. See image at 5:40 in your video (well done btw & ty) above the "ck" in the word "click". Eventually found this online as part #CVS99: vapor canister vent solenoid, also there is a vacuum switch canister purge control solenoid (p#:FDCC100 & under the hood) and the one you tested mounted to the canister (PV583). Tried 12V method outlined here on all 3: only CVS99 failed.

    • @johntube2525
      @johntube2525 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Danny Ordonez, We tried a 9 volt battery to test a vent valve and we could hear a small click, but we could still blow air through it. Since it was a brand new vent valve we then tried hooking it up to the vehicles 12 volt battery, positive and negative, using aligator clips, and we heard a much louder clunk and we could not blow air through it. So I think you need at least 12 volts to test a vent valve.

  • @lemmy999
    @lemmy999 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Remember to have a fuse inline when connection your test 12V to the EVAP vent control valve. Mine failed and there was a short on the terminals. I hooked it up with a fairly large fuse and it instantly blew the fuse.

    If you blow from one port, if Air come out from other side means EVAP Canister Vent Control valve bad ? (assuming 12V is not applied). I took mine out and It does not click when I applied 12V, also I can blow air and air comes out from other side.

    • @RetroPCUser
      @RetroPCUser 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      With it open (12V turned off with the car off), it'll allow you to fill up your car. If it doesn't close (don't hear a click with the car running), it means the relay inside the vent control is bad. The part itself isn't pricey, however, on some cars, it's inside the tank area. On my Oldsmobile Intrigue, it's mounted on the side and can get removed without issues. Remember: place a fuse in the positive (red) wire to check for a short circuit as well.

    I don't know about the maxima, but on my 97 nissan hardbody p0446 can also be caused by no power to the vent solenoid, e.g. not having the harness connected correctly, or circuit break, or fried ecu. If you have a bad canister, it may throw a p1447 because the canister leaks the charcoal into the line, and somewhere along the path towards and after the purge valve, it can get clogged up.

    • @johnsmith-sk1ep
      @johnsmith-sk1ep 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In case anybody reads this, my canister turned out to be bad. I actually don't know anything about these canisters but I assume there is some membrane inside that keeps the carbon secured and since mine was leaking carbon pellets, I assume it was bad. Instead of taking it apart and/or refilling the carbon or shelling out $200 for a new canister, I took a nylon bag from a used tea bag (no joke), put it over the end of the output vent and screwed back the screw clamp on the hose and canister port, reset the computer codes and haven't had a problem since. What ever screen you use, just make sure it doesn't restrict the air flow but it's fine enough to keep the carbon pellets in the canister.

I need to pass emissions by next weekend and my cars keeps getting rejected. I've driven the car 300 miles since I replaced it. But still no luck. It seems that I have 6 ready and 2 incomplete (not ready). Those two happen to be the Catalyst & EVAP. I'm under the understanding that I have to perform certain drive cycles. Great video by the way. alpacino262000 Is the check engine light on? If so, what are the code(s)? The EVAP system has many components. I have a playlist addressing quite a few number of them - th-cam.com/play/PLl6xt4Pyay3AWpPY3TMsUCczro3aSkpvD.html - but having a trouble code will pinpoint the problem quite quickly.

      +yippyli The voltage reading should be battery voltage. Were you able to start your car?

    • @yippyli

      My battery is reading 12V. My car has hard start but able to start up after 3 seconds. Could it be bad ground from vent solenoid? If so, do you know where the location ground for vent solenoid?

      I think the vent solenoid grounds through the ECU. But i"m not sure.

    I tested the valve with 12V battery and it opens fine. I checked the terminal have 3V on one side and none on the other. Where is the fuse located (I have a 96 Nissan Hardbody)? Also I have read that there is power to both sides of the terminal is that true? I followed the wire that should have 12V along the body, under the seat, through the firewall, and it appears to attach to the "EVAP canister purge control volume control valve", which I tested watching your video and everything appeared to be in order. Any ideas?

    • @Seeker85420
      @Seeker85420 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The plastic-bodied electrical part needs a ground, so I assume the other wire is for that, no power should be on it, unless you have one multimeter lead hooked to battery positive, then the "hot" side will have no power. Not on both

    Can this p0446 process be applied to a 2004 chevy s10 crew cab 4.3? Didn't see what vehicle this video was for.

    • @CarsNToys

      Erik Lafferty This was done on a '97 Maxima, however, if you apply power to the vent control valve on your truck you should hear the valve move back and forth.

    My car (2004 Nissan Sentra) is throwing a code of p1273 , because of a air to fuel ratio issue. We've done about everything , so I'm wondering if this could potentially resolve the issue?

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid not. What specifically have you done?

    • @migueltejada619
      @migueltejada619 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been an issue for years now. The o2 sensor was replaced. A muffler was replaced. There was even some wiring that was redone at a shop, but this code just comes back to haunt me. When I pump gas it spews back out of the filler, so I was wondering if they were potentially related.

  • @metalmaniac375

    Don't you need to blow air thru the valve at the same time you power it up to see if it is in fact working mechanically as well... I am fixing to test mine, thanks for the great vids!

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Metal Maniac Yea man you can do that as an extra step and verify air is indeed getting through

    • @garymiller2056
      @garymiller2056 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think when it is "powered up" is when air does NOT go through. It is normally open. When you are driving and gas is being used up , the vent is open to equalize the pressure. when you are parked it is also open . When pressure rises in the tank , the valve allows vapors to enter the canister It closes when the purge valve opens to remove vapors from the canister some time after the engine is started. That is when a vacuum develops which the pressure sensor reads. If it does not hold vacuum, that is when the computer throws a leak code. Long be I hope this helps.

      Dustin Mills I actually think I figured it out. I believe one of my hoses are kinked. Right now it's 12° outside and snowing so I'm going to wait for a warmer day and see if that's what it is. I crawled up real quick before the snow started for another reason and it looked like one hose was bent to much and has a kink.

    If the canister or any part is indeed bad, would it shut the vehicle down while driving?

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Statistically, it's a pretty low possibility. Stalling tends to be a problem with the fuel/ignition system. Even a bad connection at the battery.

  • @greenspiraldragon

      I'm not sure that would work, greenspir, You would get voltage there but the computer controls ground. It is normally open, but when is it closed? It is closed when the purge is on. That is when it would be grounded?? Too many questions.

    If you have the key forward and 12v at the connector shouldn't the canister click/open just by plugging it in? My has voltage and does not click(even though it's brand new) I don't have anything to run 12v to the back of my truck.

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jesse Tate Not necessarily. I'd first verify if power is getting to the canister when the key is turned to the on position. (In other words, check if 12v of power is getting to the harness connector.) If so, then you can test the canister.

    • @jessetate6244
      @jessetate6244 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do have/did check for 12 volts at the harness/connector. I'm going to remove it and try to jump it without the harness anyway. So frustrating. Then it's off to diagnosing either the carbon canister or the FTP sensor.

      Salvador Aguero P0444 deals with the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve. It's easy to check the valve. I have a video on a similar valve for older Maximas. Your solenoid valve is located in the same area as shown in the video: th-cam.com/video/7ni-mjr1xeg/w-d-xo.html
