The name derives from "STO," for Storz and "WA," for Walter (Founder Walter Storz). Walter is usually pronounced as a "Va" sound and the S would have the "Sh" sound. Since the o in Stowa has no umlaut, it would be pronounced as a normal "Oh" sound. So I think "Shtova" would be accurate indeed.
Wie denn? Ich habe 'überall' in Deutschland gelebt und das deutsche Walter wurde überall mit einem 'V' wie in 'Vase' ausgesprochen, was wiederum dem englischen 'V' wie z. B. in 'very' entspricht.
@@SteffenRoller You are of course, correct in explaining the pronunciation to an English speaker. For him in Germany, if he sees a "V" though, the pronunciation would be wholly different.
Thank you for the review TGV! You really did my watch justice. I hope everyone enjoyed the review. Looking forward to receiving it back :) Best Regards my friend, Steve
I know how you feel haha. The trident pro they Tristano reviewed is mine. I missed it as well, but thanks for lending your Stowa in for review!! It's on my list!!
Steve, Im purchasing virtually the same watch you sent to TGV for review only with a brown strap. My question is when filling out the rotor style what did you chose for the "Create your own engraving" to simply get the standard Stowa markings you have on yours? Did you chose the empty white box in the drop down or what did you select? I just want the standard wording you have on yours. No engraving or special fonts. Thanks in advance.
Steve P hi, Ive just ordered this watch with the same rota, but I've just had an email from stowa telling me it only comes with the handmade rota, I was just wondering how you got that particular rota? regards matt
I know a bunch of guys comment on this but your introductions to your videos are outstanding!! Shows the time and dedication you put into your videos. Excellent work and reviews
Good video Tristano. This is a very cool Fleiger watch. I have the 42mm Laco Memmingen , which is a hand wound mechanical. It is another beautiful German flight watch. The Germans really make some outstanding time pieces.
I would love to see a duel between Stowa and Laco, I think the Laco watches are really underrated. I don't think you can get any closer to the original than with a Laco. Great video. Greetings from Germany.
5:49 Echt Leder - translate to 'real leather' and Handarbeit (manual labor) in this context translate to 'hand-made' and Hautfreundlich means 'skin friendly' which refers to it being hypoallergenic.
I bought one of these recently on ebay, wonderful quality and style from Stowa. This review helped me to decide to go ahead and make the purchase. They show up quite often on ebay for $800-900 pre-owned. They are $1100 new. The standard strap that they include is very nice.
I just got my Stowa Flieger Klassik 40 today. It suits me down to the bone. I'm a technically minded man that reads a lot of military history, so this watch really spoke to me. Firstly, it's completely utilitarian (what you call a "tool watch"). But it's also of superb quality and has those 1930's stylistic touches such as the onion crown and beautiful blued hands. The brown rivetted strap is both masculine and historically correct. I would recommend the Flieger to anyone looking for historicity and top notch German quality. For what you're getting, the price is a bargain, and the service and options available by ordering straight from the factory really set Stowa apart from the competition. I ordered the date complication with the cool engraved rotor.
Your first pronounciation at 0:50 was fine ;) its "Schto-wa" like Storz Walter, the founder of the brand. So the "w" sounds like you pronounced it at 1:14 i hope this helps And the text on the leather strap means "real leather, handmade, skin friendly" greetings from germany
Thank you for bringing my Stowa Flieger 40 no date / no logo back to mind. I immediately bought a new strap for it and will for sure wear it as often as my Stowa Seatime Prodiver. Slowly becoming a Seiko fanboy, I don't have to forget my old treasures in the watch box.
Hey TGV, As a long time fan of both you and Stowa it is really nice to see you reviewing a flieger of this brand. I've had some Stowa's over the years and i have never been disappointed. Even with the increased prices i still think Stowa offers a lot of value for money. Not to mention their customer service which is one of the best i've ever experienced. My Stowa Seatime is one of my keepers: a true tool diver with lovely curves. Having 4 different bezels it is a joy switching looks. Would love to see you review a Prodiver, or maybe one of their modern fliegers (TO1, TO2). Regards from The Netherlands!
I just bought my first automatic watch -Fortis Flieger. It is the smallest watch I've ever owned 34cm A mid century size but I'm I love it. I dressed it up with a padded leather pilot style strap. It feels like I have a tiny tank on my wrist. You give the best reviews👍
+1, it completes the Flieger aesthetic, for me. I ordered a reddish brown riveted strap to put on my Laco Black Automatik 42. The grey one it come with looks cheesy. Couldn’t find one I liked in the US, had to ordered one from Poland 🇵🇱, on eBay. Cheers.
If you could ever conseve visiting the Oktoberfest in munich.bavaria, germany ,you'd be invited. And please excuse mit english.I really like your vids.
Incase anyone is wondering, the one piece leather strap is a Fluco. Excellent quality strap!! I'm in love with the Stowa. Great size and history behind it. It's on my list except for the manual wind movement. Great review, TGV!!!
After owning my Stowa Flieger for over a year now, it's my most accurate mechanical watch. It gains 2 seconds per day. It's a well made watch that's only improved with daily wear. I'm a nurse supervisor at a very large veteran's facility and I walk 3 to 6 miles every night, so there are no concerns that I'm too sedentary for an automatic movement! If you're interested in the historical military aspect and value readability, I think it's worth the $1000 easily. The C3 Luminova dial is the brightest I own also. It's the perfect nursing watch for getting vital signs in a dark room at night. For me the Stowa Flieger has proved it's stuff.
Wow......great intro work TGV!!! Your production values are getting pretty impressive, thought it was a commercial at first :D (Proud Patreon Member to The Urban Gentry channel)
Wish I would have seen this before I bought my Archimede 39mm Pilot. I didn't know much about the heritage of Stowa and the Archimede had lots of options. Its still currently on its way but learning the history of this watch and the craftsmanship in it, Im a little envious and regretful now. Great piece.
I can highly recommend this watch - mine arrived in December (handwound classic 40mm) - it's a stunning watch in the flesh - the clarity / lume / general finish and blued hands are brilliant.
Been waiting for this video since ages! :D Always loved flieger watches, they're real tools and yet they're so classy. I think that if I'll get to buy one, it will be the 36mm Laco Tokio.
love your work sir.......the clear precise presentation and the enthusiasm you have are what are addictive to the viewers. your positive humanity comes through in your vids.......thanks. beautiful watch.........i think the damasko watches are just a little bit better.
Nice review. I have just sold my IWC Mark XVI and having seen your review I cant imagine my IWC was any better. I have to say that when you spend so much on a watch your not paying for na necessarily better watch, you are paying for history and wrist bragging rights. So many of the recent watches, especially the Steinhart 500 titanium you reviewed are awesome pieces. I actually purchased the Steinhart based on your excellent review and was not let down. truly amazing, and on a decent strap unbeatable.
Just picked up a Marine model a month or two back, can not recommend it enough. Dressy, yet utilitarian. working as a Passenger Conductor it is my go to dress watch for accuracy and clean appearance. Simple white dial with a date complication for added use, I highly recommend taking a look at the Marine collection. It is truly unique.
Great video and appropriate for Memorial Day. I did not realize 5-watch companies made the Germany Flieger. I purchased an homage awhile back and was thinking of the IWC. I will strongly consider the Stowa. As you said, it is a watch that needs no introduction, anyone seeing in on your wrist can I identify a Flieger. Cheers. Tom
is that IL2 in the intro? also the ones that seem to pull interest for me is the stowa marine original roman in black there, along with the green one at 17:36 and if only that JU87 was an 88 D4. also if you do go try and go to norway's air museum and pay respect to the 88 D4 there, the one that crash landed in the tundra and is being restored, as my grandfather crossed paths with that thing atleast once from what his records said. although I dont know if he even had a watch in the luftwaffe, as it never showed up at all in any of his photos.
Ok. After seeing this, I am liking the A dial now, more than the B dial. I haven't bought a high end pilot's watch yet for good reason, I can't decide! I like the "counterweight" on the seconds hand on the Stowa, the blued hands, the case size and that their optional date windows are at 6:00 (more balanced to me). The nagging thing that makes me want to save more for an IWC is the fact that IWC's gear ratio for time setting is second to none. It's like the altimeter on a rocket. This is great for travelling. I also would miss a screw down crown with the Stowa, but for their quality, it's a reasonable price to pay.
Great review, I have looked at this particular watch a number of times and was pleased to see the review, much appreciated. It will be interesting to see if and when they move away from the automatic ETA movement. Cheers.
Thank you Bob, great to hear I could help you with this one. From what I have heard, a lot of copies have under the table deals with ETA so unless Stowa go in-house or Sellita, they will stay with ETA. I honestly would not worry. Best regards, TGV
Pardon my inexperience, couldn't help but notice the Made in Germany stamp on the case back and underneath the 6 hour mark. However, the movement says Swiss Made. Could you elaborate a bit more on this? My guess is the 2824-2 movement is Swiss made but assembled in Germany? Thank you!
I love the simplicity of that dial. And the lume? Stunning--you could have knocked me over with a feather. :) I had no idea how the blued hands were made. Very interesting. Regarding the intro: for a few seconds there, I thought you had actually used your model planes! LOL
Love that Stowa. The big crown with no crown guard on most fliegers worry me but this one isn't too bad. Thanks for the video, I'm a new subscriber but I'm almost caught up on all you videos:)
TVG, love the intro! Just great! When I think of WWII German watches I think of Tutima and Hanhart which both made watches for the Luftwaffe. The Hanhart has the ETA movement but I am unsure about the Tutima. I will check these Stowa watches out .... Great video, thanks for sharing!
Where did you get that strap? I've looked through the archives but I can't seem to find it. I love its looks, it's so rugged and vintage. It would look great on my seiko skx007.
+The Urban Gentry you can get x-plane for Mac. It's 30 bucks for North America, and 60 for the world, but you also need a joystick which is 30 for the Logitech extreme 3D pro, which is the best joystick for under about $100
I bought the Steinhart because the Stowa was so expensive. It also looks great on my 8" wrist. The Unitas 6497 is beautiful. I know Steinhart has a bad reputation because of the homage submariners, but their fliegers are FAR more beautiful than Laco's for the price, and in general a small fraction of the price of Stowa (or God help us all if Lange started to make them again out of unicorn horn and fairy dust). I love my Steinhart B-Uhr. I will send it in to you if you want. It is really quite lovely. I want others to know how wonderful this watch is.
This is the class channel for watch reviews. Great editing , commentary and selection. Keep up the amazing work, never disappointed with any of your reviews. Bravo!
Great review TGV. I must admit, I didn't like flieger watches and simple complications either, until I started needing reading glasses :-) Enjoy your youth my friend!
Hi TVG both pronounciations are correct, Schtowa is a more modern pronounciation and stowa is also used. I am wery fond of the urban gentry channel, and I watch it often. Beeing a German and having worked all around the world I love your open mind.
The Stowa flieger is a lovely watch but the Laco fliegers are much closer to the originals. They do a wide range of other styles too. You should check them out.
Out of curiosity, about how long did it take to think of and create that intro (I have absolutely no idea about these things)? I really love the unique intros on this channel. Great review as always.
I just got the hand winding (ETA 2804) version. It's a lovely piece. The onion crown, case, dial, and lume are as TGV describes: minimalist, but very smart-looking, well-executed, stylish, and overall, the Flieger Classic 40mm grows on you very quickly. It's been on my wrist non-stop since it arrived. It is a bit pricier now in April of 2019, though; current price for the hand winding Flieger 40 is 899.16 Euros, or 1,010.75 USD. Still good value for money IMO if you're into mechanical watches and like the Flieger's aesthetic but don't really want to shell out 6-7k for an antique or wear a dinner plate-sized replica. The hand winding movement is pretty good, too. I'm noticing only about a +5 second per day variance. Not bad for a hand winding piece.
Great vid. I am interested in getting the B-Uhr. I am a bit stuck. Should I go for the Stowa or the Laco? Looking through the web it seems Stowa have the better quality, and Laco are closer to the original. Have you seen both? Are you able to compare. Thanks

Great video, Governor! Although you are not so much into these designs, you reviewed it very well and honestly. That is a trait of " grandeur ". Salutations, JRB P.S.: Plus or minus seconds are on which basis?
The only pilot style watch I have is the Omega Dynamic date. It's quite small, I think 38-39mm wide but it's quite legible. Great review as always! Also noticed the new TGV NATO at wrist candy watch club, looking good!
Hi TGV, it's pronounced like you said it the last time in the beginning of your video at 1:32 The brand name is build from the german name of the founder Walter Storz. Stowa is short for "Storz Walter" > "Sto... Wa...". Although the name "Storz" in German is pronounced like the English word "sh... ould" in the beginning (German: Sch...), the name of the Brand "Stowa" is mostly pronounced with just an simple "s" in the beginning. But this can also depend on regional dialects in Germany ;-) True to the original last name it would be "sh..." in English. Stowa is a great choice for affordable Flieger Watches. But you should also check out the German brand Laco. They also have authentic Flieger's in their portfolio. Because they often use reliable and well finished japanese Miyota (Citizen) movements the price is much lower. Nevertheless the finishing is also on a very high level. You can check some pictures of one of their models on my Flickr page: www.flickr.com/photos/callmewhatever/19309888151/ www.flickr.com/photos/callmewhatever/19640575435/ www.flickr.com/photos/callmewhatever/19481286359/ As someone mentioned in the comments too, they are also the only manufacturer nowadays which produces authentic Flieger watch replicas (and I mean true replication, not just a copy. Because of that the price is much higher). Link: shop.laco.de/de/Beobachtungsuhr-FL23883/Flieger-Beobachtungsuhr-Replika.html Best regards from Germany, Daniel
Medal of Honour Intro!! Quality!! Love this watch! Definitely going to be my Aviation piece.. I would also swap the strap!! Don't like that style strap.. But overall really glad you reviewed it!! Stowa it is then! Cheers TGV!! BMJ ENGLAND!! 🇬🇧
Thank you Christian,

Also ich weiss nicht wo du lebst in Deutschland, aber Walter wird nie wie "Valter" ausgesprochen :D

Hi mate. It was just the standard rota that was supplied with the watch when I ordered it. Was no special order or anything
I have this watch and travelled to the factory to collect it. They were amazing and I adore this timepiece.
Cool! Would love to visit myself one day. Thank you for sharing that,

I love this video . I come back and back to it time and time again year after year and really gives me an essence of that time.
I bought a flieger style watch two weeks ago and it hasn't left my wrist since.
I haven't even wore a Seiko on Saturday. What's wrong with me?!
Fl23883 is not the reference number. It's a Luftwaffe proofmarking, certifying the timepiece for service.
I know a bunch of guys comment on this but your introductions to your videos are outstanding!! Shows the time and dedication you put into your videos. Excellent work and reviews
5:44 "Echt Leder" means "Genuine Leather" in german ;)

5:49 Echt Leder - translate to 'real leather' and Handarbeit (manual labor) in this context translate to 'hand-made' and Hautfreundlich means 'skin friendly' which refers to it being hypoallergenic.
"Hautfreundlich" literally means "skin friendly"; the German language is just fantastisch!
Echt leder is Dutch

The Intro was IL-2 Cliffs of Dover, great WW2 Flight Simulator
Your first pronounciation at 0:50 was fine ;)
its "Schto-wa" like Storz Walter, the founder of the brand.

"S" in German sounds like "X" and "W" in German sounds like "V", so the right pronounce is "SCHTOVA"
I love Stowa Flieger's. Although as a student, all I could afford for now was a Maratac Mid Pilot on sale lol. Great video, cheers.

Thank you Bryan,
Best regards,
TGV
@The Urban Gentry, thank you for the great review. What do you think about Stowa vs Laco Fliegers?
The writing on the strap says "genuine leather. handmade. skin friendly."
My wish list getting bigger when I watch your videos TGV ;) . Really nice intro thanks
LOL, it happens to me too!!!
Thank you :D
Best regards,
TGV
Fantastic editing on the intro! Keep the videos coming.
Thank you, certainly will! :D
Best regards,

Another great review of something I didn’t know existed but now can’t live without. Where would be the best place to view/acquire one in the states?
these Stowa fliegers make me feel kinda funny, like when we used to climb the rope in gym class ;)
Where did you get that strap? I've looked through the archives but I can't seem to find it. I love its looks, it's so rugged and vintage. It would look great on my seiko skx007.
I think it's the Fluco One-Piece UTC G10 Military Brown, sold by Holbens.

Jane's Combat Simulator!!! I remember these games. Great games and a great watch, thanks TGV.
Thank you, never played it myself, never had the time but would love to!
I wonder if they have it for mac!
Best regards,
TGV
+The Urban Gentry you can get x-plane for Mac. It's 30 bucks for North America, and 60 for the world, but you also need a joystick which is 30 for the Logitech extreme 3D pro, which is the best joystick for under about $100
Great intro! I wonder how this Stowa compared against Laco flieger? Comparison video incoming?? Thks TGV & Steve.
Thank you PTH, IMO I must say I prefer the Stowa.
Best regards,
TGV
Outstanding review
Thank you Michael, very kind.

If you're going to be reviewing more German watches in the near future try getting your hands on a Junghans Meister Pilot Chronoscope.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSS, you have great taste, cant hurt to get a third Junghans review on here!
Thank you! :D

Thank you Tristano. Just saw the video with Fredrico. Enjoy your new GMT Master!

Great review, comments on the logo agreeable!
Thank you! :D

Well, Laco also won the 1939 contracts so makes sense.
Thank you Malcolm,

Echt Leder means 'authentic leather'... cheers fm Singapore+

Can you explain for me the function of two dots next to the triangle? Thanks you .
Karist Tran, I want to know, too.
If viewed upside down you still know what time it is
Unsurprisingly I love this...
Of course ;-)
Happy flying my friend.
Best regards,
TGV
The Urban Gentry Thank you! :-)
Love mine. Have it on a lovely Bark and Jack blue NATO strap and it looks fantastic.
Stowa Flieger TO2 is very nice. 2824-2 Top grade. I have no 001 with Red second hand.
The seconds hand looks like a light Saber in the lume shot!
Great intro and review.
LOL Yessss! Well observed my friend!
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Out of curiosity, about how long did it take to think of and create that intro (I have absolutely no idea about these things)? I really love the unique intros on this channel. Great review as always.
Thank you Fahim, took about 2 hours to shoot, 4 hours to edit, just the intro.
Best regards,
TGV
Wow! Thank you for all the hard work! It really shows.
Just wanted to ask if they corrected the reflective problem on the classic 40 ?
There's a genuine 1939 Stowa B-Uhr Type A on eBay at the moment - Only £10,795! Stunning though.
Excellent review!!!
What is the brand of calipers, also can you do a review on Ball Eng ll watches
Salutations,
JRB
P.S.: Plus or minus seconds are on which basis?
Thank you JRB!
Very kind of you to say.
Best regards,
TGV
a very nice watch. quality, simplicity minimalist style. simply great! cheers.
Thank you! :D

The only pilot style watch I have is the Omega Dynamic date. It's quite small, I think 38-39mm wide but it's quite legible. Great review as always! Also noticed the new TGV NATO at wrist candy watch club, looking good!
Nice one Shawn, love your Omega.
The new nato are certainly incoming! Cant wait to try them myself.
Best regards,
TGV
Hi TGV,
it's pronounced like you said it the last time in the beginning of your video at 1:32 The brand name is build from the german name of the founder Walter Storz.
You can check some pictures of one of their models on my Flickr page:

As someone mentioned in the comments too, they are also the only manufacturer nowadays which produces authentic Flieger watch replicas (and I mean true replication, not just a copy. Because of that the price is much higher). Link: shop.laco.de/de/Beobachtungsuhr-FL23883/Flieger-Beobachtungsuhr-Replika.html
Best regards from Germany,
Daniel
Medal of Honour Intro!! Quality!! Love this watch! Definitely going to be my Aviation piece.. I would also swap the strap!! Don't like that style strap.. But overall really glad you reviewed it!! Stowa it is then! Cheers TGV!! BMJ ENGLAND!! 🇬🇧
Thank you Benjamin!
