I do not have an issue with Aliexpress watches if you understand what you are getting. A few are really well made. Particularly if you want try out something cheap before buying the really expensive watch.

    • @gritsteel4559
      @gritsteel4559 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I agree, especially if the movements are good enough like Seikos, miyotas, Epson, even Seagulls. Servicing ? Forget that, they are so cheap one can buy another one or a new model if they ever fail. If one loves it so much, then just throw away the movement and replace it with a new one (no need to think of expensive servicing fees here, no hidden "tax" :)). So while earning to buy that grail watch, at least one is able to wear a nice watch or watches in the meantime. One needn't have to live so austerely while saving up to buy that grail watch. Furthermore, sometimes a homage of a grail can convince you that you really don't like the grail watch after all. On the other hand, if you like the homage so much after all, then it can motivate you more to save up for the real one.

Yes - I actually did this. I wanted a Tudor FXD Chrono but needed to know if I'd enjoy wearing one without spending trukloads to find that maybe I didn't. I still do wear the Strategic Rabbit sometimes - eg as a beater...

I love buying vintage inspired watches on AE. You get the vintage look but built with updated materials with a reliable Japanese movement. I have vintage watches but worn on special occasions and can’t be worn on a daily basis. My issue with UG is that some of the views are hypocritical especially towards some brands which homage no longer made watches. I came across the Island x Urban Gentry ISL-226 RangeMaster .. what a mashup of well known watches. The name a cross between Tudor and Omega , the numerals Rolex Explorer, the hands Tudor Ranger, the 24hr dial Hamilton. Does this fit into one of the categories or should there be an new category for this type of watch ?

@@wingi7722 The channel WATCHing James also has another reason for a homage. He likes a certain Panerai design, but it is a watch he will not pay for or save for, but he likes the design. In addition, the NH35 homages are usually simply just awesome bang for buck. I like the design of Yacht Master but most likely will never own one for obvious reasons. Let alone use one in situation where it might get banged or dropped. Or travelling, I don't like the idea of taking even remotely expensive watch with me on a holiday trip abroad. Good video! I never consider Apple watch an watch. It`s more of a convenience screen for the phone. Main threat to watches would be peoples constant interest to needlessly monitor their vitals -- steps, heart rate etc. Smartrings like Oura would free peoples wrists. Lately I`ve been looking for good Eagle 7 and I have to say their market is infested with franken watches. So if anyone can guide me to a site or a video with examples of original Eagle 7`s and how to spot the franken watches better that would be nice.

Especially useful as I'm thinking about an Explorer sometimes next year and am pondering the pros and cons between one from Chrono24, or the cumbersomeness of putting myself in the wishlist of the AD close to me. They told me more or less one year to wait... What would you recommend me to do? A lot of Chrono24 resellers are official horologists or jewellers that have real places where one can go and see the watch in the metal... I'm hesitating, any advices welcome, in the context of Europe market, not US, if any difference it makes...

I got conned by one of those "hype/limited ed" TH-cam channels a few months ago. I even reviewed it myself when I bought it, and I loved it - for a while. Now it's running about 4 minutes fast. Their website is going down every few days, and no one is responding to emails at their company. I even tried leaving a comment in the original video, but it was ignored. Some might say I should sell it on and pass the problem to the next guy, but I can't do that. The money is gone, but I will keep that watch as a reminder to never be taken like that again.
Edit: I'm going to make a video about this watch and what happened with them this week. Now I'm mad I fell for it. I'm not in this for the approval of luxury brands (or any brand). I started watching you because (a) we're both English and Italian, and (b) you are genuine in your views and reviews. I started making videos because I have some experience with journalism from console magazines in the 90s, and I thought I could use it in a different form. However, I'm starting to see the other side of this industry, and even though I lost money, I want to protect others from losing theirs.

Basically was told that won’t be getting a GMT any time soon. Grabbed a neo-vintage ‘06 Coke w/ SEL’s & couldn’t be happier. I could wear it every day, as it is now the most comfortable piece I own.

Great video! I totally get the criticism of smart watches but they may evolve. I am torn with my grail watch desires. I really admire the Dornbluth & Son watches and could probably swing one but I worry about servicing it. Also in house I am looking at a Nomos Glashutte or my favorite non inhouse is a Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Hemingway. Totally agree on the fake watches. Its tempting but are you really going flat out lie to people when they ask you where you got it? Eventually someone who has gone through the purchase experience is going to know you its not real.

I’ve been thinking about that Hanhart Preventor ever since you released that episode. I’m just a normal middle class American and my favorite watch in my collection is the Hamilton Khaki Auto. After seeing the Hanhart you helped design, I’ve decided to sell 4 of my watches I hardly ever wear and pick it up! Keep up the great work brother!

Wow, that is a real power move. Putting aside my involvement, it's ballsy, and for a brand like that, pure class. Now adding myself back into the picture, this made my day. I am deeply honored by the gesture and choice. It shows character, good taste and the strength to act on your convictions. That is getting rare these days. I hope it brings you a life time of faithful service and adventures.
Thank you so much, onwards and ever upwards.

Top notch stuff as always. How I wish that this was mandatory viewing for any budding watch collector! A younger me especially.
Spot on about modern in-house movements. So pointless as they're technically no better than the ETA/Sellita/Seiko/Miyota options in their top grades.
For vintage it's a different matter - I will tolerate them if the watch is exceptional. Like my 60s Hamilton with the OG micro-rotor movement invented by Buren.
    Onwards and upwards!

Its true about "earning" a watch. I recently received an inheritance from an aunt and I finally bought a Swiss automatic. Nothing crazy, just a Tissot.
It doesn't give me the same level of satisfaction as some of the cheaper Orients, seikos and Casios that I own.
Instant gratification is rarely a good thing,.

I think the tide is turning with AE watches. Some are just cheap poor quality design copies but many are really good watches that truly are homages and also original designs. But anyone that places more value on heritage/history wont ever really like them but same goes for microbrands. I think they all have their place and if you know what you want then its fine. I respect you for standing up for your perspectives. Everyone has their own watch journey and we should all standby our own journey. Great video as usual! Thanks.

Would love if you could do a video on frederique constant - like the quartz tank style watch you’re wearing today, it would be great if you could highlight some standouts of their lineup and why they should have everyone’s consideration. I must admit I’m royally confused about their lineup but I do think many of their watches are quite handsome.

Completely agree with both your options and morality TGV. A code of decency and self-respect over fake image and poor understanding of what a watch can be. Buy F-91W it has far more credibility than any designer, fake or smart watch!

Great video and always stand up for what you believe. I'm not so sure that the smart watch is a threat to the mechanical watch, but possibly the entry level.
After all , us that buy or wear a mechanical watch, are wearing something that's been pretty much obsolete since the end of 1969.

FYI : The "smart" in "smart watch" (and all "smart-tech" actually) is actually an anagram. It's been that way since the beginning. Stands for "Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology". Personally, I refer to that stuff as "ratt-tech". . . "Recording and tattletaling technology".

A very informative and entertaining video as always the Hugo bits are so dam funny lol. I agree never get into watches for investment because 9 times out of 10 you well lose your shirt over it I look at it the same way people buy trading cards and comics sure you can make big bucks more often then not it isn't worth the hassle trust me I have bought many trading cards and sold and it always comes down to demand and time. I had cards in my collection worth next to nothing and the next year jump up to be worth 5 figures and I had cards worth 5 figures drop to 1/4 the value just like that same goes for comics Iearned hard lessons so I went from Trading card investments to just buying what I liked same with comics life became a hell of a lot stressful and a whole lot happier. I love that you never compromise your morals

If it comes to financing trinkets and toys like watches i like to do that on a basis of some simple rules.
It's done with money i can throw away without missing it, and if i can't buy 2 or 3 without worry, it's too expensive.
Also a reason why i have just as much fun with a Seiko Tuna or a Citizen NY0040 as someone else might have with a Submariner.

Great video, Hugo! I have to say I have a Samsung smart watch that is close to ten years old and it still works fine for my needs without new software updates. I imagine it's probably not even supported anymore. I don't know about Apple watches but for the sake of clarity, I would say smart watches are not all made with built-in obsolescence.

  • @M09Brumbeer

Great video and agree with all points except for the getting in debt point. You can take advantage of the market even if you have the cash to buy your favourite watch. In the UK, there are many dealers offering 0% finance with no early repayment fees. Money is expensive and taking into account current savings rate, I’d rather finance a watch this way than taking funds out of my savings and losing the credit interest. Quite nuanced I know but taking advantage of the market should always be explored. Especially if you can get a discount AND 0% finance then it’s a good way to get that watch you want.
