The triangular shape of the portion that actually covers your kneecap grips the ground more and will fling you forward. The smooth shape of the old model that covers your kneecaps lets you slide. The new ones might be better for ventilation, slightly, but it's overshadowed by their lack of functionality in my opinion.
I use the Leatt 3.0 EXT for my knee and elbow and so far they are the best i have use, on a hard crash i don't even feel the impact... the only problem for the knee and shin one are the strap which stretch over time, my girlfriend did shorten them twice.
do the extra hole, like Marty Backe has shown in an old video. That will make the Leatts feel much more secure and less prone to slipping down over time. After you make the extra hole, skip the lowest hole and use the new hole and the old middle hole instead. Works like a charm.
Safety can’t be overstated. I ride the Dualtron Storm scooter. Haven’t crashed IT, yet, but have crashed on other, less powerful scooters and my wrist guards definitely saved me. I also have knee/elbow protection but imo the wrist guards are as necessary as a full face helmet
I saw two girls riding an electric bike together. They fell and really messed up their skin. They weren't wearing head gear, nothing. The ambulance came, police, it was a huge spectacle.
doesn't appear Leatt needed to do any re-design on the dual axis tbh - it's a fine product. imo, the best part of those armored shorts is the little flaps that go a couple inches above the hip. That is a spot that always gets scraped in a crash, and just that little bit of material can save a lot of pain. Otherwise, that thin padding isn't worth much (via experience during crashes) - I've found that having hard plastic/padding combo shorts, more legit motorcycle shorts, are needed to really prevent hip damage in a substantial crash. I'll sometimes wear those thin padded shorts and hard plastic shorts over those (both under pants) for certain rides.
Leatt designs its products for motocross and downhill biking and I think that for those practices, those improvements are great and welcoming. But i'm agree with you for Euc's riders the Og version is quite better!
Thank you so much: my OG leatts I spend more time in than my helmet and I rate sooooo highly. Thank you for your contributions; you’re a legend zen the community loves u ❤
i toppled off the raised part of my other brand elbow pad and it rolled up my arm. So now im also concerned about raised areas on pads. I re tested and yip i topple off that raised bit.
might be a weird question, but if you wear the knee guards under your jeans, which are most comfortable to Sit down in? ( rally adv rider here, i tend to have stretches where i just sit on the bike )
Thank you for the video! Really like my Z-frames, protect from dislocating too (dislocated my knees for 5 times riding ski's and snowboard, never had issue with Z's). The honeycomb on new ones is most likely carbon reinforced, it looks similar as in the Z-frames (I broke one, cost me 60€ to replace and straps 55€) Z-frames got similar "rubber" in knee cup, might be impact gel. E. got Alpine star hard shell underpants. I have had soft versions, but surprisingly the hard shell is so much more cool over the padded ones, I rather stick with the ones making me sweat less even though they are a bit clumsy.
Thanks for the excellent review, i am newish and had several shin related issues (fkn ouch) so i need more protection, you saved me £45 getting the older model so i'll buy you a beer one day. I am mid 60's and discovered you don't bounce at my age.
Why don’t you use motorcycle pants. You also need abrasion resistance. Also these guards easily get of your knees during the first second of the crash.
@@JonahHax @tylorwithano76 I have to agree with Tylor (depending on the pants mentioned) My friend used to wear motorcycle pants while riding, and the knee cap protection slid to the side when crashes and he badly damaged his knee. They also don't cover your shin very well. If you have a good pair send me a link, I'll be interested in looking at yours, but definitely don't recommend
No dude - I reckon you were right the first time - to me it looks like the fully rounded knee caps on the OG slide smoothly, whereas the cut-outs in the new one grip the ground and tip you...
Thanks zen, I just put those leatt kneepads in my cart. I want the OG but hate the straps, I to overlap. Also want the og colors... not the current selections 😒

So Marty has a great video on a super simple mod where you drill a new hole, a bit above the existing middle strap hole, allowing the middle strap to lay on the top of your calf. I did it a couple years ago and it works. And then Adam Wrong Way put a thin line of adhesive caulk near the edge of the knee area, on the inside like a giant "O", adding more grab.
They don't come in leatt green which is a crime. They do seem like they'd be more ventilated for summer riding and the rubber like padding might absorb sweat less. Quite expensive thou considering.
I posted in the EUC groups about this EXACT issue back when I first saw the new model and everyone told me I was insane and it wouldn't make any difference, esp the chick from SF...
yes, I think you're right man, thanks for your work, it's hard to be a critic, people don't like to have there new expensive gear put under the light so to speak..or there wheel lol
Hey Zen Lee, thanks for your great content we love it, Can you give a bit more info on the doc's you are going to print for the police and what is that name of the company that step in? AUMP?
Thanks- Yes, let me follow up on that. Right now I just have the one that says I bought the wheel before 2024. The other is just some certification from the factory, and the other will be the documents AUMP sent to the police for the rider to get his wheel back.
@@ZenLee I added colored surgical tubing between the buckle and the strap. Now they are the most comfortable pads I have ever worn, and stay 100% in place.
Oh a thing I'm pondering is slidability. How much grip per slide do I have? When I've fallen off. Is my Armour so rock hard I skim over surface not slowing down. Or am I going to grip to hard causing a possible tumble? Is my Armour right yet. Simply solve the mystery of the euc. Simple enough. Ha.

They are great knee pads but not good knee braces. The upgrade to a brace is worth it.neither of these offer torsional protection. These are a cool looking upgrade to the dual axis. Nicer profile. The upper and lower OG used to pinch my over pants
My design concern is for road and forest use pads that scoop rocks, glass, wood splinters while in a kneeling position through a scoop design and combined with holes in knee so same possible issue in knee the leading edge. My 5c opinions. I like action and quality looks nice, i bet that company has saved many knees from foolishness, and we love it.

yes! Thanks for communicating that better for me!
It makes a difference at 1kmh, but in reality when it happens at 50 they'll slide fine.
The new ones seem to be more breathable with the hole pattern on the knees but may possibly make it more difficult to slide on them.

I am guessing that the holes give them better traction on the surface so they probably don’t slide as well as the other ones.
