Cold Ep 9: The Light of Seattle

  • The day after Susan Powell’s disappearance - her father-in-law Steven Powell sat at his computer and reviewed a Microsoft Word document containing the lyrics to a song he’d written a year and a half prior. It was titled “Your Sweet Name was on my Lips Again.”
    The third stanza of the song included the lyrics “There’s a sadness, knowing that you’re gone/Without you, how can I carry on?”
    Steve typed an asterisk in front of those words and added a comment.
    “I am now reviewing this on December 8, 2009, as I contemplate the events of the past two days, which may include Susan’s death,” Steve wrote. “She is missing, but circumstances suggest that she was murdered over the weekend. I am now truly ‘wondering what on earth to do.’”
    Cold obtained a copy of that document from among the private personal files of Steve Powell. It has never previously been made public. The note suggests that Steve Powell did not have an active hand in his daughter-in-law’s disappearance or any immediate firsthand knowledge of what had actually happened to her.

      Shell T Right?? It's always amazed me that even lifelong criminals and convicted violent felons seem to have an innate grasp of the fact that *nothing* kills people's souls and destroys their lives quite like sexual assault and/or child abuse.
      Murder is horrific, but the victim's suffering is, by definition, over. Not so for rape and other forms of sexual assault. At least based on what I've heard from numerous people, the pain & suffering (for the survivors and their loved ones) just goes on and on, and there's never any real "closure."
      Also, the fact that even the most hardened murderer has a mother, and likely has sisters, grandmothers, wives or girlfriends, daughters, etc. probably has a lot to do with it. Even the toughest of those "tough guys" often feel a deep sense of protectiveness towards women they care for, and at times even for women and girls in general. And, because of how depressingly common rape and sexual assault is, it's very likely that even these career criminals will have known a woman or have a female family member who's been a victim of sexual assault.

      Many girls fall victim to the blandishments and 'lost puppy' routine that Narcissistic beasts like Josh and his father layer on. Most of us, because we were set up for not being able to resist it by lack of a father or a male to teach us about that sort of loser, and to demonstrate how an ACTUAL adult man loves the women in his life. Some are just like Susan. Kind hearted, and empathetic, wanting to help and responding at some really deep level to the amount of broken that seeps out of every crack in the facade of losers like this.

      Yeah it’s odd. Seems like josh may have gone along w his dad in that Steve blamed her for “flirting” w him and encouraging his advances by any brush by or inadvertently touching him in any way or ignoring his weird comments etc. (to be fair the massage I admit was weird though IMO) and in Steve’s journal he said something like a few months after he told Susan he was in love w her that it didn’t take much for josh to believe that Susan instigated Steve’s feelings for her, so who knows if Josh’s acceptance of Susan’s blame for Steve’s feelings was reality or yet another warped view of reality in Steve’s mind.

    • @drmantistobboggangonzodr3961
      @drmantistobboggangonzodr3961 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      stephani m that’s an interesting thought. It’s entirely possible, and tragic if true. Steve seemed to be infatuated w women but abuse like that can be more about power as well.. of course we will never know, this is just speculation and armchair diagnosis which is never a way to get any answers, but it’s an idea that could explain a few things. Steve didn’t seem to be overtly interested in Charlie and Brayden thankfully, hopefully (at least as far as I can tell from the info publicly available that I’ve seen). Josh also didn’t seem to be concerned about leaving his sons w his father either from what I can tell from this limited info.

    • @maneckineckbeard1749
      @maneckineckbeard1749 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      bettiepagebombshell This sounds really plausible to me! Almost the entire Powell family was so, SO disordered and dysfunctional that the dynamic you're proposing seems entirely possible, if not probable. From what I've learned, the family seems to line up disconcertingly well with what I learned in a psych class is called a "family cult" structure. It breeds an absolutist, black vs. white, "for us or against us" mindset. Steve was the "cult leader," and made his children into his devotees; if they wanted not only their father's love (which they'd been raised to believe was essential for their survival) but that of their siblings, nothing less than absolute loyalty would be required. They'd be compelled to support whatever "truth" Steve put forth to them, or risk total ostracism.
      The treatment Jennifer was subjected to by her father and siblings for "betraying" this dynamic of cultlike devotion reinforces my perception of how the family probably interacted: her strength, integrity and loyalty to her husband and kids- all of which had enabled her to break with her family's sick dynamic- were punished with shunning and emotional abuse by her birth family. For this sort of sick dynamic to function, it would be necessary to make an example of *anyone* who broke free, in order for Steve to reinforce, through fear, the unconditional loyalty of the remaining Powell siblings.
      I can believe 100% that despite his apparent attempts to break free as a young adult, Josh would have been so utterly conditioned by the toxic combination of his father, siblings and dysfunctional upbringing to such an extent that it would be almost impossible for him to NOT take his father's side over that of his wife...or anyone else for that matter. After a lifetime of overwhelming conditioning, which trained him to place loyalty to his father above all else, it makes perfect sense to me that the anger, jealousy and hostility he doubtless felt (as most any husband naturally would!) after learning about his father's twisted sexual obsession with his wife would be twisted *away* from his father and *towards* his wife. I also think it's entirely likely that this reaction wouldn't even have been conscious, but rather would have just been an automatic, unthinking response.
      This story is so heartbreakingly tragic, in so many ways and on so many levels. I only hope that it can serve as a warning to any young, naive people who, like Susan, are considering becoming involved in a relationship with someone who's a product of this sort of upbringing. It can be so tempting to think that love can conquer all, but sadly that's not always the case.

    Listening to the entire podcast because of HeavyDSparks....and I find it chilling how Steve is willing to cover for Josh no matter what. However, Steve always sprinkles truth into his stories, just so you know he is "genuine" in what he is telling you. At 49:50 Steve tells us a little "scenario" of a confession from Josh telling him he "threw her in a hole..." --- That I'm sure is a little piece of truth that he sprinkled.

    Thank you so much for an in-depth, fact based investigation into the disappearance of Susan Cox. Everyone I know felt that Josh was absolutely guilty in this case! I’m certain he did exactly what he bragged about! She was probably gone by the time he took the boys camping. She was probably in the back of that van already deceased! Even one of the boys said she was with them and she stayed with the “pretty rocks”. Why would that child lie? I know at this point that all those involved are gone now but I’m sure he tossed her down some mine hole. It would just be great if she was found and returned to her family for a proper burial. It's almost comical, had the circumstances been different, it would be hilarious. Like the song "each time you seem to gaze at me..." It amazes me that a man of that age could possibly mistake her disgust for a loving gaze. He totally just saw what he wanted to see, and was so obsessed that every little gesture, every look, every word, every silence, to him, meant the attraction was mutual. I mean when he reads her diary and finds no mention of his name, he was genuinely shocked, because he is so deluded that he just couldn't understand why he was never mentioned by her.

So not only is he delusional, but he has evil intentions. Should we then believe everything he wrote in his journal? Do people lie to themselves? The 'fixation' issue (most likely an undiagnosed mental illness) is definitely something that was passed from father to son genetically and reinforced with behaviors demonstrated by the father in the son's childhood. However, as the son did dabble in the sexual fixation (like his father) it would seem that his fixations were more on control and ownership. The way he speaks of HIS possessions connotes that he felt that Susan and the boys were also possessions... not unlike his tools or laptops. Fear of the loss of control and ownership of these 'possessions' led him to end them all so he would win in the end... in his mind.
    The presence of the Mormon religion in all this would've not allowed for mental health diagnosis that may have helped both Steve and Josh years and years ago and the women and children were allowed to suffer with unrestrained illness and abuse rampant in their households. Susan and her boys paid the ultimate price for this indulgence, unfortunately.

    I'm feeling Susan ìs in water and not so deep down either, I keep getting çrystal for a name of either a person or a place/river, I'm also getting October 10th for a special date this could be an anniveŕsary/ birthday etc that's special to or linked to Susan, I feel she wants to be discovered so she can be taken home to her family, she just wants to go home. I'm getting many, many times she wanted to go home in life, she's telling me that she was not allowed to go home in life, now she's passed she wants to be at rest close to family, close to home.🙏🏻💔🙏🏻💔 Love & Light 💜
