@ThePodgeAroo 232323 I'm not a professional, but I think it would probably be good to go to therapy anyways, even if it is a phase or you get better, because it could help you identify other problems, it could help change your environment, your outlook, etc. Even just having therapy as a kind of social support can be really great, I think. Edit: examples, grammar
I swear by this therapy style. I have BPD (and Bipolar type II) and I have been treated with schema therapy for about a year now. I started with high scores on all schema themes (the 18 themes) and am now down to very low on almost all of them. Schema therapy helped me understand not only my mental illness but create understanding towards myself and how I cope and conduct myself. I am on my way towards a steady recovery and do recommend schema therapy to anyone who is willing to dig deep and really get to the bottom of things. Find a therapist you can trust and go for it, recovery is possible!
From high on all 18 to very low on almost all of them. Wow... That's great. While I'm sure you've had great help, you're the one who did the heavy lifting. Well done!
Seems like with BPD, one is likely to score high on all of them. As someone I gave the questionnaire from Reinventing Your Life said, "I've got full score!"
I love how you say things like “does that make sense?”, makes me feel like you’re actually talking to me and were having a real conversation, rather than just watching a video. Thanks for always being there for me even though we’ve never met, I hope you have someone in your life who is always there for you too ❤️
I was in my 13th year of therapy with my 8th therapist before schema therapy was presented as a possible option for me and have made more progress in the last 2 years than the 13 before, combined. I absolutely believe that all therapy is a process, but working and struggling for that long without having the tools to actually understand or make changes is incredibly disheartening and discouraging, as you said. Hearing the words, "We're not making progress, I don't think I can help you." from even one therapist is crushing and it doesn't get easier. I know there are so many people out there who have been there and could use the tools and adaptability schema therapy provides to start/continue their process. Thank you for taking the time to make such a comprehensive introduction to schema therapy, it desperately needs more exposure. It is complicated but you always do such a great job of structuring the information so that it is digestible :) I hope you don't mind, but I was hoping to share a bit of feedback/suggestions? I've noticed your attention to making sure we have the basic info to build off of when learning something potentially new in previous videos you've created and can't tell you how grateful I am for it. What I noticed today was that I found myself wishing the concepts/details you were listing, or calling back to, were actually written on the screen. This may just be a Me thing as I am a visual learner and often have difficulty taking in a lot of information in a short period verbally but where this is a subject I am pretty well versed in but still struggled to keep up, I thought it was worth mentioning in case it was useful to others as well. Thank you again!
Had my first session with a new therapist yesterday and she told me she wants to do schema therapy with me. I'd never heard of it before, so I've spent all day researching it. I can't believe the timing of your video! The universe is wild haha. Thanks Kati :)
I have been in therapy for months but there wasn't any change. Since I changed my therapist who works with schema therapy, I can say it changed my life :)
Thank you for making a video about schema therapy. It's really weird that such a great and deep therapy method is not well known. I believe its because this therapy method requires a very talented therapist. I tried many therapists and many of them has a shallow CBT approach. Even one therapist who studied schema therapy didn't choose to use it. But my current therapist is great. She believes in schema therapy deeply and loves being a therapist. I made so much progress thanks to her and schema therapy. I hope this therapy method gets more popular with your video.
I just found out about Schema therapy today after switching mental health nurses (the new one is actually really good and knowledgeable and empathetic, my faith in humanity has been restored!!!) and I think it might be the answer for my troubles
thanks for this vid. I am getting schematherapy for attachment issues and it is soooo scary. But also feeling so good. I thank Jeffrey Young from the bottom of my heart for creating this therapy.
Interesting to note that schema therapy has been around long before it was given the label as such. It is how countless clinicians carried out their therapies. (Integrating various therapy modalities into a personalized treatment plan for each client) great video!!
I have Complex PTSD and I’ve been seeing my therapist since November. She told me today that Schema therapy is the route she wants to go down. I dissociate a lot and I did today in session so I’m so glad to come across this video. You’ve been great in explaining everything. Thank you
I just finished part 3 of a schema therapy workshop offered by my local mental health services here in British Columbia, and I've realized so much about what's at the root of my issues. It was also helpful for identifying what may be behind certain other peoples' behaviour towards me. I wish this therapy was more widely available. Unfortunately, the facilitator for the workshop is the only person in the province to be trained in schema therapy.
My therapist and I tried this form of therapy with me early on in my recovery. It wasn’t harmful for me to do it and it made me really look at the way I look at and talk to myself. For me it wasn’t this key therapy that “cured” me or “uncovered” something huge. To be honest, I didn’t really feel like it fit me well. However, going through it helped me to get to know and trust my therapist more so that I could be more open and feel safe enough to share more about my past. I think even therapeutic approaches that don’t exactly work perfectly can be beneficial if you have the right therapist.
I was given a course of schema therapy on the NHS and really learnt alot about patterns of behaviour and how the emotions are triggered by my negative core beliefs. I think it's a great tool to have, especially for anyone suffering with anxiety or depression and even just in general, it can really help you to see the reasons for the never ending cycle of rubbish in your head and help you to break that pattern. I was however later diagnosed with CPTSD and the therapist wasn't able to help me with the traumas, but being the NHS it was an 18month wait for CBT, so instead i now have a private therapist who specialises is ISTDP (intensive short term dynamic psychotherapy) it's not like any therapy I've ever had or heard of and she's very challenging, i would love your take on this type of therapy kati. Thanks so much for continuing to create these videos, i have learnt soooo much from you and anything that helps end the stigma behind mental health is truly amazing! Xxx
I have been in cbt for a few years with a great psychologist. We ddiscuss schema often. Automatic responses, maladaptive coping, etc. I have drastically changed the way I respond to situations. Thanks for the detailed look, Kati.
Well explained thank you. I’m just starting out on schema therapy and it’s resonating with me and explains a lot and I feel like instead of not knowing why I feel suicidal when friends don’t include me in their plans I know now what schema is being triggered here, why I react so intensely and how to come to a more healthier way of thinking and therefore react differently and therefore live a less intense and more peaceful way that allows me to feel joy again.
It feels like your videos are aimed right at me... I recently found out I have ASD (as an adult) - you recently did a video about that... and now I'm reading a book about anxiety and Autism... and it talks about schema therapy!
What a lovely presentation of such valuable information, you treat viewers as if they were in the same room as you, very engaging and like a friend, thanks.
My unmet childhood need of emotional nuturing has led me to fall into a type of eating disorder (a rather non pasé appraoch to eating). I realized this recently and now I'm trying to nurture myself through meals 🖤
Schema therapy is helping a lot. I address the little girl inside me that was neglected and abused, found that there was also shame attached because, looking back. I was so sorry that my mother who was neglecting me had to face herself. I internalized the shame I thought she would feel when she found out I had disappeared as a toddler and was brought back to our apartment by a stranger. Shame became a theme in my life vicariously! I carry it now because I got married to a narcissist. My core shame is that I had those kids with him and couldn’t protect them properly. The truth is my kids are fine. Shame desolves when spoken about says Brene Brown. Doing some digging through the lens of schema helped me trace where all those negative thought, emotional and behaviors were coming from.
I'm a LMSW and found that schema overlaps Gestalt and Inner Child Healing. I have the most success with these methods and scene how this can change lives! I love your videos, they are concise and clear!
This video made schema therapy a little easier to understand, thank you. I also love your positive, encouraging approach to how you speak to your audience. You come across very authentic and empathetic, particularly in how you noted that we ALL likely have developed some less-than-helpful coping mechanisms. Subscribing!
@@livelifelove2xx245 I am not familiar with three chairs. What my therapist an me did was to set up two chairs, I was seated in one, the other was empty. Wow! I learned about schemas in DBT, but never knew there was a "schema therapy". I just bought Dr. Young's book "Reinventing Your Life" for my Kindle. From the few pages I've read, this looks to be just what I need. Thank you Kati.
Ive seen the term "schema therapy" around a bit recently and thought "I wonder what that is?" but never checked it out. Then you made this video! This sounds like something that could really be helpful for me (self dx bpd). I'm seeing an intern counselor at my uni and doing dbt group but I feel like it's barely scratching the surface. I think I'll try to bring up schema next time and see what happens. Thank you, Kati!
Love the video! I would love to know more about "Hero Worship" in fields like the arts when people are starting out with a teacher and begin to worship them and start a sort of tunnel vision towards only them. Sometimes this goes to the teachers head and can cause problems for both the teacher and student down the road ie: overcontrolling, being mean in lessons, etc. In my instance were getting a lot of people coming to our channel and in lessons talking about their previous relationships with teachers that had "hero worship" tendencies and we don't know how to approach that so they can move on and get better. Hope this makes sense as this is a huge growing dilemma in the arts.
Thank you for this video! I was a psych major but got my masters in something else. I still love learning about about psych, though, and your videos have been a fun way to continue to learn and think more about different psych/therapy topics. :) I didn't know about Schema therapy and am happy I got to spend some time learning a new thing.

This is the kind of therapy I need. I'm anxious about therapy, in general, but I don't even know how to get it when I can't afford it. The only insurance I have is Medicaid, and most therapists don't take it, at least from what I've noticed when searching for someone in my area.
Hi Kati. Can you do a video of a day in a life as an LMFT? Just curious to know what is your daily routine is like. Maybe you can give us some motivation for those who seek to venture in this field. And btw I love your videos and I bought your book! Thank you for being so inspiring to us. From a Malaysian girl
Thanks so much for this. I am currently in the beginning of schema therapy for my bpd xx I’ve found it really helpful so far. Unfortunately I will not undergo this therapy for long as my gp says not Avila able on nhs. I’m getting the therapy through a charity
Good luck Lisa I finished my therapy the end of last year. The skills I learned n the things I learned about myself have helped alot, I still have wobbly days but meditation n applying skills help it's not easy it's a life long process but we'll get there. Take care mate ✌ Peace
My therapist is specialised in schema therapy and I think it is a very interesting therapeutic approach. I've read a lot about it, but I'd love for you to make another video about it, especially maybe talk about the chair work? I think it is very complex (and scary) but I'd like to learn more about it. Thanks for the video!!! :)) (And sorry for my English, it might have some mistakes, I'm from Germany and still improving😅)
I use ACT for my Generalized Anxiety disorder and cPTSD. It, combined with talk therapy, mindfulness practices and yoga (the latter two kind of work hand in hand with ACT), have made a HUGE difference for me!
Wow this is so great, I think this is exactly what I am in need of, I have been doing cbt and many other types of therapy and it hasn’t helped! This gives me hope❤
I love this! You're speaking my language! I'm obsessed with psychology and THIS is something I've not heard about in this manner! LOVE YOUR CONTENT, THANK YOU SO MUCH 😎❤
Schema therapy followed by mindfulness based cognitive behavioral therapy helped me with my dysthymia aka chronic depression. My therapist recommended reading the self-help book based on the therapy first so that I could take more of an active role in my therapy. I believe the book is called Reinventing Your Life and it's author is the therapist who created the therapy Jefferey Young. In the book schemas are called lifetraps.
Great you brought up inner voice and challenging our inner voices beliefs about ourselves. Following that belief to its original conception in our past to its root cause. It is a favorite technique, I use self examples to share and help others.
Kati, that was very well explained! I am doing schema therapy for a while now with my therapist to overcome my maladaptive behavior patterns and we are working with the inner child, the adult and the parent. You mentioned there are more modes. Could you maybe do a video where you go more into depth with these modes? Thank you so much
So greatful to hear you talk about it ! 🙏 💕💕 The first time I was introduces to the term "Schema " was when I was preparing a paper about place making as homework for ( urban design theory subject ) Theorist and architect Shulze, introduced it in his book ( Genius Loci : phenomenology of architecture, 1979 ), where he explained how the place should meet the belonging needs of children and create healthy schematic effect on him as a child to reflect well on his identity and place identity in the future . I was linking your topic with that the whole time that I had to rewach the video again, Its realy intresting topic when related to psychology and therapy .. I wish you could further explain in future videos how the environment affects schemas generation ( from psychological point of view ) because I feel that there is a need for such discussions now a days more than ever with children disconected from natural or outside environment .. Thank you very much for your work it's really inspirational and beneficial to watch what you create here 💕
Is it bad that I use your videos to help me study for my NCEs? I took a practice test and did fairly well on it by remembering what was in your videos. Those questions I got right. The ones I got wrong, I have never heard of. Like book titles. Love it!
Thank you for this video Kati :) My new therapist thinks this therapy style will help me with some issues I've been struggling with my whole life. I'm so hopeful x
The video was informative and educative,it gave us an insight into our own lives. I earnestly request you to do a more detailed video on the same therapy.
Thanks, Kati, this video was really informative! Schema therapy was something I've heard of, but I didn't really know anything about. Could you do a video about Neuro-Linguistic Programming therapy and Polyvagal therapy? Thank you!
Everyone needs therapy in their life, but not everyone's brave enough to admit it. Don't be afraid of going, therapists are super nice and it means you get a judgement free place to vent! Go for it! X

Hi Kati. Can you do a video of a day in a life as an LMFT? Just curious to know what is your daily routine is like. Maybe you can give us some motivation for those who seek to venture in this field. And btw I love your videos and I bought your book! Thank you for being so inspiring to us.
From a Malaysian girl
The way she says 'welcome' is so cute
Thanks heaps ❤
Thanks so much for this. I am currently in the beginning of schema therapy for my bpd xx I’ve found it really helpful so far. Unfortunately I will not undergo this therapy for long as my gp says not Avila able on nhs. I’m getting the therapy through a charity
Good luck Lisa I finished my therapy the end of last year. The skills I learned n the things I learned about myself have helped alot, I still have wobbly days but meditation n applying skills help it's not easy it's a life long process but we'll get there. Take care mate ✌ Peace
I personally love Schema therapy:)
(And sorry for my English, it might have some mistakes, I'm from Germany and still improving😅)
thank you for the clear presentation! kind regards from a Dutch psychologist
Thank you so much for breaking it down and simplifying it. Really appreciate your videos. Thank you 😁🙏
Thank you Kati you're awesome and your personality is so sweet.
Thank you as ever :) xo
Love these vids! Notifications are always on 🙏 could you do a video on "acceptance and commitment therapy"? P.s these always come at the right time 💙
I use ACT for my Generalized Anxiety disorder and cPTSD. It, combined with talk therapy, mindfulness practices and yoga (the latter two kind of work hand in hand with ACT), have made a HUGE difference for me!
@@TheBirdiebnd wow, thank you for that! I start it soon and that's made me a little less anxious 🙏
Your "welcome" saying style is amazing.. very lovely i love you
Very informative. Thank you, Kati.
Thank you Kati for creating this wonderful video and giving me some tools to use.
Wow this is so great, I think this is exactly what I am in need of, I have been doing cbt and many other types of therapy and it hasn’t helped! This gives me hope❤
I love this! You're speaking my language! I'm obsessed with psychology and THIS is something I've not heard about in this manner! LOVE YOUR CONTENT, THANK YOU SO MUCH 😎❤
I am too, I really want to be a therapist one day when I get all my GAD, PD and PTSD under control but I find all of it so facanating.
Hola peeps!!! Have a great day 🙏😶🐾
Schema therapy followed by mindfulness based cognitive behavioral therapy helped me with my dysthymia aka chronic depression. My therapist recommended reading the self-help book based on the therapy first so that I could take more of an active role in my therapy. I believe the book is called Reinventing Your Life and it's author is the therapist who created the therapy Jefferey Young. In the book schemas are called lifetraps.
rgeorge117 My psychologist recommended that book too 👌🏻 I just started schema therapy
This is interesting! I would love some more information on Gestalt therapy. That's what my therapist follows.
This is really helpful thankyou ❤️
Great you brought up inner voice and challenging our inner voices beliefs about ourselves. Following that belief to its original conception in our past to its root cause. It is a favorite technique, I use self examples to share and help others.
Kati, that was very well explained! I am doing schema therapy for a while now with my therapist to overcome my maladaptive behavior patterns and we are working with the inner child, the adult and the parent. You mentioned there are more modes. Could you maybe do a video where you go more into depth with these modes? Thank you so much
Thank you
Very helpful. Well put together and relatively easy to understand with some prior knowledge.Thank you.
It was so so good and understandable... I was planning on reading schema therapy book and I came across this! Thankyou so much ...💜
Thank your for this focused, thorough yet compact overview! It was very helpful for me, looking for an introduction on the subject.
So greatful to hear you talk about it ! 🙏 💕💕
The first time I was introduces to the term "Schema " was when I was preparing a paper about place making as homework for ( urban design theory subject )
Theorist and architect Shulze, introduced it in his book ( Genius Loci : phenomenology of architecture, 1979 ), where he explained how the place should meet the belonging needs of children and create healthy schematic effect on him as a child to reflect well on his identity and place identity in the future .
I was linking your topic with that the whole time that I had to rewach the video again,
Its realy intresting topic when related to psychology and therapy ..
I wish you could further explain in future videos how the environment affects schemas generation ( from psychological point of view ) because I feel that there is a need for such discussions now a days more than ever with children disconected from natural or outside environment ..
Thank you very much for your work it's really inspirational and beneficial to watch what you create here 💕
Great. Reading "Reinventing Your Life"
Is it bad that I use your videos to help me study for my NCEs? I took a practice test and did fairly well on it by remembering what was in your videos. Those questions I got right. The ones I got wrong, I have never heard of. Like book titles. Love it!
Thank you for this video Kati :) My new therapist thinks this therapy style will help me with some issues I've been struggling with my whole life. I'm so hopeful x
The video was informative and educative,it gave us an insight into our own lives. I earnestly request you to do a more detailed video on the same therapy.
This sounds really powerful - thanks Kati!
this women is smart and gorgeous. great video!
Thank you for sharing
Angel hugs n Blessings to you and yours 💜💜💜
Yes! I use schema therapy a lot. Great vid!
Just what I needed today. Thanks for all you do Kati! Love your channel!
i absolutely love this. thankyou for sharing kati, i think this approach in therapy would help so many.
Thanks, Kati, this video was really informative! Schema therapy was something I've heard of, but I didn't really know anything about. Could you do a video about Neuro-Linguistic Programming therapy and Polyvagal therapy? Thank you!
I don't go to therapy, but this seems like something I NEED.
Everyone needs therapy in their life, but not everyone's brave enough to admit it. Don't be afraid of going, therapists are super nice and it means you get a judgement free place to vent! Go for it! X
