The fact that he wrote this song about his mom who was going through cancer when he was young and had to care for her... he lived a really tough life but created some beautiful music ❤️

My mom passed away in October and we would listen to Matchbox 20 on the weekends while cleaning the house in the earlier 2000’s. I’d give anything to go back. I’m so so sorry for your loss.

I am so glad to say I grew up in the 90's, with this music. so authentic and timeless. songs like this were so great. instead of people hiding behind computer screens or looking at their cellphones all the time, people seemed to communicate more face to face. social media wasn't a thing. just cool songs on the radio and cool music videos on tv. what a time to be alive. even though you can see these videos and hear this music on TH-cam now, there's simply nothing like hearing the music back when it came out and was being played on the radio constantly. when I heard a song I liked, I would go buy the album. I still have all my old c.d.'s from the 90's. songs like this were special. life was simpler and not as scary, to me. social media seemed to water down the authenticity of music. there are certain artists I still like, but nothing compares to the realness of 90's bands
I feel the same way about the music from the 60's, 70's & early 80's. Those were the years that built the foundations of progressive rock, metal, and smooth mellow harmonies that made us parants, and raised youre generation, and hopefully inspired our love of music as much to you all. We lived in a time when it was free to see bands play, and only a couple of tv shows even covered music back then. Like Ed Sullivan or American Bandstand, then later on in the 70's came the Midnight Special. Now, there's too much going on in every direction to keep up on the new talent thats out there, and too many faces glowing from either facebooger or tic-tack to care much. And it seems that lately some are more intrested in voicing their opinions about politics, than singing their own songs. To say you seen Cream, The Beatles, the Eagles, or the Stones, says alot more than just an era of music too. Keep Rockin & Keepin it Real my friend, cause the music never stops. "She swears the moon don't hang quite as high as it used to" is one of my favorite lines ever. Simple but implies so much. First of all just the sheer loneliness and boredom that would lead to somebody noticing something like that. The beginning of the descent into madness required to swear that a celestial body has shifted in the sky. Another angle is the beauty of the night that the moon once brought has been lost to pain, sadness, and the increasingly obvious truth that the sun has set on your life and the moon is soon to follow :/
Underrated? I swear the least original and intelligent people use that comment on every video. They were huge for a good bit of time. All over the radio, on tours, solo stuff, winning awards. Wtf are you even talking about
I'm still listening! Saved my life from an abusive relationship. The more I listened and sang along, the stronger I felt and have since escaped that relationship and moved on to an incredibly healthy, beautiful relationship! Thanks to y'all and thanks to God! 😚😚😚
My cousin died this morning. We were extremely close growing up, to the point where I basically thought of her as my big sister. The kind who could out-burp a 7 year old boy and who you just KNEW would have your back in a fight no matter what. Matchbox 20 was her favorite band, and we used to blast it while 4 wheeling in my Jeep. You are missed, Rachel. Missed and loved.
Rachel is far from dead my friend.. Rachel is eternal like the rest of us, and she’s merely unseen and in her natural form. I assure you she is closer to you now more then ever. She is more alive then we are. When you get the chills… that’s your “6th sense” picking up on the influx of energy around you. Even though unseen.. very much alive and active brother. Listen to your Jiminy cricket and always let your conscious be your guide, keep an open mind and see what you get 😁Peace and Love brother 💙
I am so sorry for your loss. I have a cousin that I've always loved as a sister. I've lost her to drugs. Hopefully she gets it together. RIP Rachel. She had good taste in music I see.
Just knowing this was about Rob & his mom's struggle with cancer makes every note & lyric that much stronger. What an awesome tune that really encapsulates the feeling of losing a loved one after a long, exhausting struggle.
@tomferguston - No truer words have ever been said to fit a situation like that. I personally know all too well about that long, exhausting struggle. You see, I lost my husband of 23 years on May 22, 2023 and this song, for me, it says A LOT and touches my heart even more than it ever did before!! Matchbox 20 was one of my husband's favorite bands and it's ironic because the night I met him, this song was playing. Please let me say in closing here, I wish you and everyone reading this peace, love, joy and happiness. Spend every moment with you're special someone, tell that special someone that you love them...don't waste one minute in doing so, that time is so precious!! Make lots of memories and remember to smile, even through tears, because you know that's what they'd want for you to do. Take care, peace out!
June 17th 2022. This album is the soundtrack of my youth. It was the first album I ever got and truly connected with. My older brother gave it to me and now he has passed away. The meaning grows ever deeper until we meet again...
I always loved the sound of Rob's voice. There is a fiery passion in his sound. When you hear him on the radio you instantly know his voice, it's so unique!
Believe it or not, Rob Thomas wrote this song about the time he spent caring for his mother when she was sick with cancer. Thomas was 12 years old when she got the disease, and she was given six months to live. She beat it. True story.
15 years ago I had severe depression this song helped feed that depression! It was there for all my dark nights. It held me tight. After I had found help. I was finally able to come back to it and didn’t a new meaning! 15 years later. I can finally say I survived. I can finally say I survived. I will give all my credit to this song! Why I felt alone in my darkest days. This song was always their on repeat. Every mark on my wrist! Every pill I took this song was there! Unfortunately that’s the only memories I have of it. This time I’m going to make new memories! If you suffer with depression and you are reading this please reach out to me! I know the feeling! I know the pain! I know the hurt! I was their at 1 point in my life! I still struggle! Your life means something to me! You are all great people! Now this song is on repeat for a new reason! Time to change the future!
Would not be surprised if the rock stations wouldn’t play since it was too pop and the pop stations wouldn’t since it was too rock. Get past genres and sub genres music is music is MUSIC.
The 90's was such a special time for music. Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, The Wallflowers, Alanis Morisette, Hootie and the Blowfish... they all made up the soundtrack of my 20's. I am proud to have grown up with them all.
+FireCracker3240 Yes 90s music was soooooo good. Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, Alice in Chains, Goo Goo Dolls, and Blink-182 were my favorites during this era. There many one-hit wonders like Semi-Sonic, Shawn Mullins, Nine Days, and Blessed Union of Souls.
So funny enough I listened to these guys back in year 96 i was 2 at the time sitting in the car early morning going to a relatives house to be babysat, but Matchbox 20....omg nostalgia kicks in, and got back into them today, really awesome mellow music! Glad to see fans rocking out to these guys today!
I've loved this song ever since the first time I heard it! He wrote it when he was about 13 years old and it was about his mother who had cancer at the time! Such a beautiful song ❤!
Iwas here 20yrs ago and im here juky 2024 and iwill be here in 2044..To everyone reading this we dont know each and probably we may never but may God lead and bless you in all your dealings in world.
Lyrics She says it's cold outside and she hands me my raincoat She's always worried about things like that She says it's all gonna end and it might as well be my fault And she only sleeps when it's raining And she screams, and her voice is straining And she says baby It's three a.m. I must be lonely When she says baby Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes And the rain's gonna wash away I believe it She's got a little bit of something, god it's better than nothing And in her color portrait world she believes that she's got it all She swears the moon don't hang quite as high as it used to And she only sleeps when it's raining And she screams, and her voice is straining And she says baby It's three a.m. I must be lonely Oh, when she says baby Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes And the rain's gonna wash away I believe this She believes that life isn't made up of all that you're used to And the clock on the wall has been stuck at 3 for days, and days She thinks that happiness is the mat that sits on her doorway But outside it stopped raining And she says baby It's three a.m. I must be lonely When she says baby Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes And the rain's gonna wash away I believe this Well it's three a.m. I must be lonely Well hell, when she says baby Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes
Just saw Rob two weeks ago in CT! He’s my favorite songwriter/singer, period. I grew up with Matchbox 20. The show itself was fantastic, he played both his solo work and MB20! If it’s possible, he sounds exactly the same as he did 20 years ago, if not better. He’s brilliantly talented.
I'm here 2024....I'm almost 42 now with two grown sons and I still remember every word to this song..but i can't remember what I had for breakfast...lmao
This was my father's favorite song. He was my best friend. He died 5 years ago from cancer. He was 63 when he passed,so yes this is legendary stuff that surpasses all time descriptions. I still miss you Dad now as much as the first day without you and that will never change,I play this for you!
Having songs to remember dad's by is so special! I lost my dad 32 years ago to cancer, he was only 32, and the song that I always love to hear is Go For Soda by Kim Mitchell. I honestly dont know why it reminds me of my dad but it does.
Last concert I went to Matchbox 20, Southaven, Mississippi 2016, great concert, but missed Counting Crows they canceled, sad to miss them, but lovwd Matchbox 20, saw Rob Thomas bring his dog out for a break before concert he spoke to us, was the best!
I was at that concert to. He took a selfie with a girls camera and he performed his ass off. His shirt was soaked. He really give it all he had. Love that about him.
When I was 5 years old. After experiencing some heavy trauma. My mom 25 at the time, had a late night (3AM) paper route, and we would do it together. I’d jump the window and toss the papers and we’d listen to Matchbox I can’t help but tear up a bit listening to most of their songs. They are and will always be apart of who I am and where I came from and the things I got to do that differed from the norm.
I'll never forget 1997, driving down the highway in a beat up old car with the windows down and this song blasting. Funny how 20 years later, I randomly thought of this song at work today and felt the need to listen to it. God I miss the 90s.
For me, it was playing this song that I had recorded (from the local radio) on a tape in my family home blasting it out on the stereo that sat atop the fridge in the kitchen. Much to my parents displeasure till they eventually loved it and is probably one they'll remember of me as a kid
I have tickets for matchbox concert Glasgow 2004 .it got cancelled at last minute ..very sad but understand why travelling was postponed Still love your music xxx especially one less day xxx♥.
Matchbox20 has been and always will be the type of music you play when you feel like there's nowhere left to turn. Faithfully a Boxhead for all eternity

She only sleeps when it’s raining... I wonder if that means that she only sleeps when she’s going through treatments. She believes the “rain” will wash it away.
@Rob Thomas I live in Knoxville, TN home of the Volunteers. Been listening to you since I first heard Matchbox 20. Love your voice. You could make any song a hit. 🙂💯❤
I'm still jamming this shit in late 2017!!!!!!!! Music that is a part of my late teens early 20s........alot of good friends and good times.......thanks guys
I’d like to think what I’m on is some kind of spiritual journey. Sometimes I question if I’m still doing the right thing or on the right path. No matter how lost I become, I always come back here, to this music and this band specifically. There’s a special place in my heart that nothing or anyone could ever change for the feeling I have when coming back to this. It reminds me of a time when my heart was truly at peace. No matter how far life takes me, here is where I will always find my center and I hope to get back to it someday.
Miranda, I could have written your exact words. Thank you sugar, this song is #1 on the soundtrack of my life. All their songs actually. They're on my obtainable bucket list, lol. Hopefully, I've tried for 2 yrs to see them in Rogers AR but covid has screwed that up. Maybe 2022...... Hope you and yours have health, peace and especially love. 💚🙃💚
Man this takes me back to a good time in my life. It reminds me I used to have a family who loved me , they're all dead now. Things have changed and I'll never get those beautiful days back. It's crazy how a song can bring back so many forgotten memories of a time long gone. I'll never forget.
Yeah, you run across those from time to time. I didn't really think much about the lyrics of Shinedown's "The Crow and the Butterfly" until I read an interview where the lead singer said the song was about a parent packing up their child's bedroom after he died, because they just couldn't take seeing it empty anymore. And Seether's video for "Rise Above This" is just gut-wrenching when you know Shaun Morgan wrote the song to cheer up his depressed brother, but the video centers around someone jumping off a building because his brother committed suicide by jumping to his death shortly before the album released.
This song reminds me so much of my gram. She was always that "she said its cold outside and she hands me my rain coat" kinda grandma. And her main job always started at 3am cleaning at a local college then go off and clean house for people on the side from 4pm until 7 or 8. A lot of memories growing up involved her. Each and every time i hear this i will always see it as her way of saying everythings gonna be ok.
90s was coming out of the 80s recession credited to Reagan and Bush Sr. Had a decade of prosperity. No cell phone distracting everyone. Companies still had pensions. One could have switched jobs at will. It literally took less than a week to get hired instead of the endless interview process of today. Federal budget had a surplus and national debt was being paid. Then the 90s ended and boom, 9/11. George Bush Jr. and his dumbass terrorist level chart to keep the public in fear and him in power. Then came the 2008 "Great Recession" once again attached to someone who's last name was "Bush". Took nearly another decade to get back on track but an insanity asylum candidate was elected President. Under his leadership, 2020 is doing "so well!" sigh.
I miss good music. This was such an awesome band. BRING BACK MUSIC LIKE THIS!!!! 💟💖😙😍 DAMN YEAH 2019 STILL LISTENING!!!!!!!😋 I love the 80s and 90s music
Damn I miss the 90s I love you 90s. Thanks for letting me be a teen in the best era ever. The memories will never fade. Who's still listening in 2018?! Matchbox twenty forever :)
Lyrics Enjoy ❤ She said, "It's cold outside, " and she hands me my raincoat She's always worried about things like that Well, she said, "It's all gonna end and it might as well be my fault" And she only sleeps when it's raining And she screams, and her voice is straining She says, "Baby, it's 3 AM, I must be lonely" And she says, "Baby, well, I can't help But be scared of it all sometimes And the rain's gonna wash away, I believe it" Well, she's got a little bit of something, God, it's better than nothing And in her color portrait world, she believes that she's got it all She swears the moon don't hang quite as high as it used to And she only sleeps when it's raining And she screams (screams) and her voice is straining She says, "Baby, well, it's 3 AM, I must be lonely" Well, heaven she says, "Baby, yeah, well, I can't help But be scared of it all sometimes And the rain's gonna wash away, I believe this" Well, she believes that life isn't made up of all that you're used to And the clock on the wall has been stuck at 3 for days and days She thinks that happiness is a mat that sits on her doorway But outside, it's stopped raining She says, "Baby, well, it's 3 AM, I must be lonely" Heaven, she says, "Baby, yeah, well, I can't help But be scared of it all sometimes And the rain's gonna wash away, I believe this" Well, it's 3 AM, I must be lonely (I must be lonely) Well, heaven, she says, "Baby, well, I can't help But be scared of it all sometimes"

It's currently 3 am and it never fails - this always pops in my head when I am up this late and can't sleep. I hated this band when they got popular because I'm a metal head; yet here I am, pushing 40 and loving Matchbox20. Still a metal head though lol

Always listen to the music it’s always speaking to you
Happy for you!!
carry on girl , be strong xo
The times. Oh man. Going through a real dark period and the music of the late 90's really fit like a glove.
100% Some of the best music back then. I can't even listen to the stuff on the radio now
Try bad reeves man on Monday
Or nubreed monsters. My turn with Jesus.
Those are really good memories! I bet their music will always be a comfort for you!
Lied to, you mean. Constantly lied to by everyone who claimed to love me. You're all horrible.
My deepest sympathies
Anyone else get goosebumps when the first guitar notes start playing on these nostalgic songs? It does for me every time!
Wow. Anyone else listening to Matchbox 20 in 2024? Amazing.

Lmao about 20 other singers during this time sang the exact same way.
Quite raspy vocals yet still harmonic
God, I love Rob. He’ll always have a piece of my heart. ❤ Hot then, hot now. Won some MB20 tickets years ago, they put on one hell of a show!! 🔥🔥🔥
Fell in love with this song in the ‘90’s still love it all these years later! Rock on Rob!!!

Believe it or not, Rob Thomas wrote this song about the time he spent caring for his mother when she was sick with cancer. Thomas was 12 years old when she got the disease, and she was given six months to live. She beat it. True story.
That iit what makes it so powerful.

15 years ago I had severe depression this song helped feed that depression! It was there for all my dark nights. It held me tight. After I had found help.

One of my favorite 90’s bands
Saw them ! Love Rob Thomas !
Matchbox twenty is criminally underrated. It's such a wonderful song along with the rest of their creations.
I don't know 1 too 40 song today's music
Actually they were huge back in the day. It's only underrated now because people dont know good music anymore.
Agreed
Moon Bear Oh, yes. It was all fantastic. Sometimes I just go on TH-cam benders, taking a trip back in time by watching music videos from back then.
Plus DMB and Counting Crows !
don't forget Marcy playground
Don't forget Toad the Wet Sprocket, Sponge and Soul Asylum. Loved all of these bands, 90's was a great time to be 18.

Lyrics
She says it's cold outside and she hands me my raincoat
She's always worried about things like that
She says it's all gonna end and it might as well be my fault
And she only sleeps when it's raining
And she screams, and her voice is straining
And she says baby
It's three a.m. I must be lonely
When she says baby
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes
And the rain's gonna wash away I believe it
She's got a little bit of something, god it's better than nothing
And in her color portrait world she believes that she's got it all
She swears the moon don't hang quite as high as it used to
And she only sleeps when it's raining
And she screams, and her voice is straining
And she says baby
It's three a.m. I must be lonely
Oh, when she says baby
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes
And the rain's gonna wash away I believe this
She believes that life isn't made up of all that you're used to
And the clock on the wall has been stuck at 3 for days, and days
She thinks that happiness is the mat that sits on her doorway
But outside it stopped raining
And she says baby
It's three a.m. I must be lonely
When she says baby
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes
And the rain's gonna wash away I believe this
Well it's three a.m. I must be lonely
Well hell, when she says baby
Well I can't help but be scared of it all sometimes
Thanks!

Cool! Where?
Just saw Rob two weeks ago in CT! He’s my favorite songwriter/singer, period. I grew up with Matchbox 20. The show itself was fantastic, he played both his solo work and MB20! If it’s possible, he sounds exactly the same as he did 20 years ago, if not better. He’s brilliantly talented.

Right on I do it with my grand kids. Keep rocking momma
This was my father's favorite song. He was my best friend. He died 5 years ago from cancer. He was 63 when he passed,so yes this is legendary stuff that surpasses all time descriptions. I still miss you Dad now as much as the first day without you and that will never change,I play this for you!
i was just pondering something dangerously similar, how TimeLESS..! Although so does everything
This song is about his experience while his mom was battling cancer when he was young. Peace be with you.
Having songs to remember dad's by is so special! I lost my dad 32 years ago to cancer, he was only 32, and the song that I always love to hear is Go For Soda by Kim Mitchell. I honestly dont know why it reminds me of my dad but it does.
Drove across the country by myself with no phone or Internet. All I needed was a map, and this CD.
miss that era
that is definitely on my bucket list within the next couple years of my 20's.. sounds like a great experience!
And did you know this song was written about his mom when she had cancer, he was 13 years old, makes me love the 20 even more😉😊💞

When I was 5 years old. After experiencing some heavy trauma. My mom 25 at the time, had a late night (3AM) paper route, and we would do it together. I’d jump the window and toss the papers and we’d listen to Matchbox
I can’t help but tear up a bit listening to most of their songs. They are and will always be apart of who I am and where I came from and the things I got to do that differed from the norm.

For me, it was playing this song that I had recorded (from the local radio) on a tape in my family home blasting it out on the stereo that sat atop the fridge in the kitchen. Much to my parents displeasure till they eventually loved it and is probably one they'll remember of me as a kid
True, this song is awesome. And I also miss the 90s and early 2000s .... good times !!! Thankfully there is TH-cam ... kkkkkk

Man this takes me back to a good time in my life. It reminds me I used to have a family who loved me , they're all dead now. Things have changed and I'll never get those beautiful days back. It's crazy how a song can bring back so many forgotten memories of a time long gone. I'll never forget.
Sorry to hear that. Take care of yourself!
Saw him in concert 2 years ago. It's about his mom having cancer. So much more powerful now that I understand it.
his wife also fighting cancer. if im not mistaken a brain cancer. you can check further online. yeah , so sad.
+TheWowwa his wife doesn't have cancer, she had a brain lesion at the base of her head, she had surgery and had it removed. She's okay.
My moms friend is closest friends with the lead singer!
For those of us who lived it, the 90s made a lot more sense than today does.
Well I grew up in the 90s loved it. And I have alot of respect
No doubt. Certified 90s kid here. I love the 90s alt/grunge
