So glad I found this channel. Never had a dad and I’m the only male in my family. The women don’t fish in my family. Thank you so much for making these videos
Dude, the Flukemaster and Chad Hoover are my go to channels. I know it’s been over a year since you’ve posted this, but I hope things are going well. Both guys are good dudes and you’ll learn if your beginner, intermediate, and advanced. I’ve been watching both for a while now. Finally getting my kayak bonafide ss127, and thinking about doing some beginners Tournaments. I think they have some KBF sponsored ones here in my state. Keep Fishing!!!
I have plenty of males in my family but my dad never fished so I’ve been teaching myself with TH-cam and he even asked me to teach him sometime since he’s seen me grab my pole and fish 4 times a week. I definitely want to teach my children how to fish.
Man a lot more difficult then I thought. Still what a great teacher he is. I haven't fished since my dad passed in 01 but now I'm relearning so I can teach my 2 son's.
Im a 37 yo female from Australia and have been fishing with a good old never fail spinning reel forever. My grandfather always took us out fishing and never taught us the baitcaster cast. Friends have tried to show me and failed. I am however pretty good at removing the tangle ups. Doing the tape idea helped a lot. Many thanks...
More of the same here. Started fishing with my grandaddy 45 years ago but life kept me away from it for the last 30. Picked it up again and updated my gear and my baitcaster almost had me giving it up again. Watched tons of videos but found this one last night. A few hours in the yard today and I can hit the bucket at 75 feet about half the time but with zero backlashes. This video was the best thing to happen to me in a long time.
I've been fishing about 15yrs and just recently about six months ago started trying to use a baitcaster. Watched tons of videos on TH-cam and still couldn't get it right. Watched this video once and in 10 mins making casts without a backlash one! I'm not accurate with it yet but now I can cast it without being pissed off! Thanks for the great video!
i can't understand how people would not like this video, real nonsense, this is amazing just for the fact of this man teaching his nephew and giving him a good time. Here you have a subscriber
I have just started learning to use a bait caster after 20 years of using a spinning reel. I backlash all the time. That electrical tape tip was awesome thanks for sharing
Gene i live in uk love watching your videos 2 years ago i was in Chicago watching a guy fish with a baitcaster in the uk we are brought up on spinning reels so i bought a abu garcia black max watched all your videos on baitcasters i started on mono line then after 6 months moved onto braid if it wasn't for your videos i would never be able to use a baitcaster the way i can now i never get backlashes ever must say watching you side cast and pitch looks easy it is not easy it's a skill and lots of practice thanks gene for all the videos you have done they are top quality made by a guy that is top quality just to let you know gene there are people like myself that appreciate your time and work GENE TOP GUY ALien
Great teaching technique. I've found that people who come from spinning gear to casting gear have the most trouble with change in the release point. You do a good job coaching that point.
GREAT video. LOVE the tape idea. I just got my FIRST bait caster yesterday, and today, I got back lash so bad that I had to re-spool my reel. Any bird would have LOVED the bird nest that reel had. Tomorrow, I'm trying the tape.
I'm 32 and just got my first baitcaster. Watched a old video of yours and now this one. I'm now able to cast without backlash! Also just subbed! Thank you sir!
50yr old male just got my first baitcaster and knew how to set the brakes and the knob that lets the bait drop slow, but still got backlash. Spent 15 minutes at the pond, 14.5 minutes was spent untangling the braid (also, my flouro-lead knot is too big for the eyelets and catches...so gonna shorten that to 18 inches, down from 5ft). I have masking tape, so I'll likely walk out 30 yards and then tape off the reel--this was the first video where I saw that suggestion. Thanks. :)
Last summer I used the original video and turning the brakes wasn't included and I got the worst backlash ever. Glad to see Gene's making a whole new video.
Gene, im just getting back into fishing (well really just starting, except for the occasional cast). I can't tell you enough how awesome these videos have been. Just bought a Lew's baitcaster and followed this video. Everything from the bucket to the black tape worked great. Thanks for making it fun, informative and being the normal guy I can watch for tips. Oh and the concept of cradeling the reel drastically improved the control I have.
Your tip about putting tape on the reel was a lifesaver and reduced time needed to clear back-lashing when first starting out. Your video was the only one I've seen where someone mentions that.
What an awesome lesson. Fun to watch! Even for those of us who have been throwing casting reels for years. I NEVER thought about the electric tape method! That is genius!
Thank you so much for such a helpful video. I watched it with my 11year old son and it help more then the hour we spent working in the back yard. He is so excited to start fishing with a man fishing rod. Thanks again and God Bless. Jason
Awesome video. Your a great teacher the young men in your family are lucky to have someone like you that seems to enjoy teaching so much. I’m 52 and just getting into fishing and kayak fishing and I learn a lot from your videos. Thanks.
Fellow Georgian here! The tape idea is amazing! I just bought my first bait caster today and I’m going to try it out! Thank you for your awesome videos!
As someone who used to be a teacher (before I realized how awful it is babysitting kids who's parents refuse to discipline them), I've gotta say you're a damn fine teacher! You're doing a great job with that young man (and me lol)! Subscribed!
Amazing video this is one of the best tip videos out there hands down. Seeing the smile on his face is why I'm a youth sports coach and a fishing and hunting dad. Great job on the video. Keeping our kids outside is what's going to keep us all strong.
I'll agree, you didn't "Fluke" around with this tutorial. I thank you for taking the time.... you earned a new sub. I'm new to using a baitcaster and I picked up a new tip with making the initial adjustment, I know will help reduce my backlashes.... won't eliminate them bc I'm fishing from the bank and I push the distance limits, but that's on me and I'm 😎 with it 😬 Gene, ✌️!
Flukemaster you do a good job teaching us folks at home & teaching fishing period. Learning and training is the key I learned that when I was in the army. Keep up the great videos.
I know this video is a bit older but thanks so much for all the videos! I went fishing with my brother's a few weeks back and was hooked. (no pun intended) lol I wanted my own stuff but didn't know where to start. Just put line on my reel and practiced outside for about an hour with a floating frog and I only back lashed once! These baitcasters are pretty fun! Gonna get out tomorrow and actually get around the water. Wish me luck!
Thank You for the video gene, I used push buttons for all my youth and into my 20s, I stepped up to spinning reels a year and a half ago, absolutely love them, I am looking forward to use both spinning & baitcasters soon in bout another few months. I’m in sa, Texas, I go to calaveras lake, braunig lake, choke canyon state park, and Corpus Christi state park, sometimes lake Amistad in del rio, Thank You brotha
Awesome video!! You have inspired me to teach my family and friends that don't know or have never been bass fishing. It really is amazing teaching others. Keep it up Gene!!
This is great thank you so much I have used a baitcaster for 3 years and I still get back lashes. I cast like I would a spinning reel or push button so that could explain a lot. Hopefully with these tips I can improve my skills.
Found my new favorite uncle! Uncle Gene!!! Been watching all of your videos and between you and a few other guys, Ive gotten back into one of my favorite childhood activities!
I bought a Lews combo and had a terrible experience with it and threw it away. that was like a year ago. I'm a spinning reel guy but this new Daiwa bait caster I picked up is solid. I Spent a little more for quality and it has completely changed my views on these style of reels. I have had little to no birds nests so far lol.
This is a great video. It's instructional for all those that are trying to get started in our hobby, especially for those that don't have anyone to teach them. I love your energy man, you definitely have a passion for this and it's obvious that you care about the up and coming folks.
I have owned a baitcast (albeit a cheap one) and have been struggling to properly cast it even though I understand the fundamentals, it was practicing I struggled with). Will be putting this information to use. I found the part about the movement of the cast vs a spin cast most useful as I figured it was all the same. Thank you for this.
Love watching videos like this man! Not many people like you willing to teach there family things like this ,I haven't saw my uncles in years and God knows what they're doing ! Hope yous had a great arvo
I just bought an Abu Garcia Black Max, 7' Ugly Stick with heavy medium action and Spiderwire 30lb Braid. Is this going to be a good setup or have I created a monster? Thanks! I want to start casting practice based on your video. Thanks again!! You are my bass sensei!
i finally got a baitcaster.. a used older model.. and a pole for it. i watched a vid that showed when you flip the bait around then cast it from sidearm so i was practicing that.. do you have a more advance baitcasting video? shows tricks? so i got it mainly for jerkbait and whopper plopper that i have that i didn't really like to throw on my spinning set up.. i got a couple small backlash today.. it was windy at first and after a little playing around with brake i did pretty good threw on whopper plopper and got a hundred casts in or so. no major backlash just small one here and there. but ya i need more practice. but im gonna make sure to take spinning incase i fail big with it.
Good job Clark. Now go enjoy the discounted left handed reels your lucky boy. Video title should read "How to teach someone to use a baitcaster" I almost didn't watch this one as I know how to use a baitcaster. I also knew about the tape trick but never thought to apply that the tape the way you did for the tutorial. Never stop teaching, I'll never stop learning. 😃
good info. im an awkward guy. i am right handed when writing or holding a rod. but im left footed when kicking a ball or when winding in a reel. i have to use my left hand to retreive and hold the rod with my right hand.
Awesome video man I taught my nephews myself they all pro bass masters now they love the baitcaster as much as I do I have abu garcia and a lews I just bought baitcasters are awesome and fun to use a must I dont use spinner reels anymore lol
used a spinning reel until last Friday, still have to remind myself do not cast a baitcaster like a spinning reel. just today I finally found that perfect setting to stop the backlash and cast farther. but still to perfect those casts and land lure where I intended to go.
That birdnesting has kept me from getting a baitcaster.....but after watching this great video I think I can handle it ...just a quick question ....what size rod would you recommend for a beginner???
I'd love to see an advanced baitcaster techniques video. There are so many beginner videos out there, but not enough on how to take it to the next level. Fine tuning your settings to eek out that extra distance, or how to correctly set up for different baits/weights/etc.
I brought my first baitcaster the spects are 10-40g fast action 210cm reel is mitchell mx3lp using 0.20cm braid 20 pound and 10g lure i can cast 20-30m my magnetic breaks are on 3 and my tension knob is lose when my lure hits the ground ita leaves a little backlash so im wondering can i trow it further than 20-30m im puting my finger on line to slow down the reel
If you have already gotten your baitcaster, congratulations! I would recommend using mono in the beginning, first because it is easier to cast, and second you WILL get backlashes and mono is cheaper to replace when you respool. Good luck.
Man wish I saw this video before I went out on Saturday to try my first baitcaster.....didn't even get out the dock before my backlash. Will take his w me to the next round. Thank you
Hi please help. Ok I see you nephew casting with left hand and reeling with right. I think that's quicker for him and I see you casting with right n switch hands to reel with right. Is there an ideal way. Should i find a reel with handle on left since I cast with my right hand ??
After watching your video and many others, after many years of fishing, I took the plunge and bought one of these. Well…here’s the result! Not easy! Not gonna give up quite yet but at age 55, I don’t have much time left so I may have to go back to my other reels LMFAO! I will try to post a pic or two of my failure.
Could you do a video on how to undo the rats nest that always happens to me as a beginner...your channel rocks, got me addicted to fishing and learning as I go with your videos they help so much. Thanks.
I'm right handed and always fished holding the rod in my right hand. I cast, set the hook, do all the rod action for my lures with my dominant hand. It blows my mind when I see right handed people cast then switch the rod to the left hand. Then they are left doing rod action with what i call the "dummy hand". Then they are left using their dominant right hand to reel in the line. The dummy hand could do it just fine! I get it, it works for some of you guys because you learned to do it from when you were a kid but seems really inefficient to me and I would never teach a right handed person to do the "bait and switch" (move rod to different hand).
So glad I found this channel. Never had a dad and I’m the only male in my family. The women don’t fish in my family. Thank you so much for making these videos
I'm in the same boat as you.

Learning a bait caster is like learning to drive a manual transmission.

Great to see things like this. There is nothing wrong with teaching someone how to fish. Give them a tackle box not a xbox.
James Queen what if I got both?
😂😂😂
Honestly who wants a Xbox anyways.

ajust the brake. if turned down you can not backlash, cast smooth. out not down, loosen as you improve,
BlueBass1954 I just started using a baitcaster and I'm doing good on it but I want it to cast more farther. What do I adjust to do that?
loosen the manel brake knob just a litte at a time till use get that, learning to cast smoth help on distance,
BlueBass1954 thanks and what's the drag for?
Controll the pull from the spool from a fish, the brake control the pull from your cast

I really appreciated your using tape while teaching your nephew. I never heard of this technique, but i LOVE IT!!!!!
What a great kid, the sign of a close family. Thanks for the lesson
I watched about 6-8 videos on how to cast a baitcaster. Yours was so simple, loved the tape idea.
Great video Uncle Gene! I have been using a bait caster for about 4 years and I still learned something
I watch quite a few of these bass videos and I have to say that you are a great teacher of all things "bass". I always learn from you.
Just started using my baitcaster and I'm a pro at untangling it! Thanks for the great info!

Some quality braid will stop 95% of backlashes doesn't have to be expensive but 8 or 16 strand is best

I never would have thought of putting tape on the reel, great tip!
What determines the setting on the brake? Should I put higher or lower if I have a heavier lure/rig?
BEST how-to fishing related vids EVER on this channel!
GENE! i love you man! been teaching me how to fish the last two months! Im obsessed with your videos. Keep up the good work! Happy Fishing Gene.
I've been waiting for this video all my life!!! Excited again to try my baitcaster that's been gathering dust.
Never thought about adding tape to prevent back last thats an awesome idea ive been trying to learn to use a bait caster for 3 years now
I just bought an Abu Garcia Black Max, 7' Ugly Stick with heavy medium action and Spiderwire 30lb Braid. Is this going to be a good setup or have I created a monster? Thanks! I want to start casting practice based on your video. Thanks again!! You are my bass sensei!
This is terrific. I have lived in Colorado all my life (long time) and have never fished east of the mountains. I am trying to get into bass fishing.
This is one of my favorite videos of yours, Gene! You taught me so much!
Thanks for sharing. Could you please show us how to cast a bait where it would skip on the surface of the water underneath a deck.

good info. im an awkward guy. i am right handed when writing or holding a rod. but im left footed when kicking a ball or when winding in a reel. i have to use my left hand to retreive and hold the rod with my right hand.
Well thanks! Just got my first bait caster for 180 bucks this will help me a lot!
Awesome video man I taught my nephews myself they all pro bass masters now they love the baitcaster as much as I do I have abu garcia and a lews I just bought baitcasters are awesome and fun to use a must I dont use spinner reels anymore lol
Best advice I've ever got from you on how to cast a baitcaster is that the cast should feel like throwing a baseball.
used a spinning reel until last Friday, still have to remind myself do not cast a baitcaster like a spinning reel. just today I finally found that perfect setting to stop the backlash and cast farther. but still to perfect those casts and land lure where I intended to go.
That birdnesting has kept me from getting a baitcaster.....but after watching this great video I think I can handle it
...just a quick question
....what size rod would you recommend for a beginner???
I keep backlashing my Zebco 33...what am I doing wrong?
Cotontop3 😂😂
Reklaw right before it falls in the water put your thumb on the spool and stop it slowly.
Put some quality braid on it. 8 or 16 strand. Turn magnetic braking up and try and do things smooth. Shouldn't have a problem.
I'd love to see an advanced baitcaster techniques video. There are so many beginner videos out there, but not enough on how to take it to the next level. Fine tuning your settings to eek out that extra distance, or how to correctly set up for different baits/weights/etc.
donchaluvit77 that's all about feel my man. Just have to play with it and find out what's alright for you and your setup
Need help..when I cast after watching your fantastic video , my line doesn't leave the tip of the rod. Pls help, and tks
Thanks for the Lesson. Great for someone new to Basitcasters.
Thanks for the casting demo with Clark, I will make sure to keep that electrical tape handy. Keep em coming.
Any time!
Thank you for the video. I struggle with bait casters and learned a bit from this video. Thanks!
I'm thinking about getting my first baitcaster and was wondering what is a good line to start of with braid, mono or fluorocarbon?
If you have already gotten your baitcaster, congratulations! I would recommend using mono in the beginning, first because it is easier to cast, and second you WILL get backlashes and mono is cheaper to replace when you respool. Good luck.
This guy is now all our Uncle. Thanks Uncle Flukemaster
What a good vid man it's gonna help me show a few buddies a lot easier now that I see the tape trick.
We love Uncle Gene
Great video. I had to learn to cast with both hands on the rod when I was first starting.
Thank you so much for this! I'm still new to fishing and my girlfriend's dad gave me a baitcaster reel that I'm still working on getting the hang of.
Learning new stuff everyday.
Hey Gene. What's the advantage of using a bait caster over a spinner? I feel like you covered this in an older video, but I can't find it now.
Thanks
Just in case Gene doesn't see this, distance and accuracy of a baitcaster are more advantageous.
Nate Harvey thanks buddy.
@pakattackable but I only ever use them for boat fishing.
Man wish I saw this video before I went out on Saturday to try my first baitcaster.....didn't even get out the dock before my backlash. Will take his w me to the next round. Thank you
So sweet to watch. I hope you caught a lot of fish Clark!
This is the video I needed. I appreciate the advice!
Good video man can’t wait for my nephew and nieces get old enough so i can start teaching them how to cast and fish
Thanks for the tape tip. Really helped out!!
