I chose a 6'6 Ugly Stick medium heavy bait caster rod. He adjusted my reel high up so I could learn how to thumb the reel. We let it back lash so I could learn how to fix the backlash's. I still use the spin cast reel and rod for crankbaits and spinner baits and such. But my baitcaster is for jigs and Senko's mostly. It took a good hour to learn to throw side arm and thumb the reel. I just got a contemporary bait caster, after a 50-year absence from fishing. My first bait caster was a solid brass “level wind” number with no freespool feature.... When you cast...EVERYTHING went round. I tried to master that thing for weeks in my yard with a practice plug, with little success.... Till I read an article in Field & Stream about using your thumb as a brake.... Instant miracle! I could actually cast with the thing! Hello Glenn and thank you for all of your typically great instructional videos. I am still pretty new to baitcaster reels myself, having only used them for maybe a couple of years at the most so far, so I'm not trying to be negative or a "know-it-all" by any means by making this comment... but I feel that this is very important to point out so that no other newbies get confused in the baitcaster world. When you refer to the "pin" braking system that is opposite to the reel handle, that is actually called the CENTRIFUGAL braking system... and what you refer to as the centrifugal braking knob is actually the "SPOOL TENSION CONTROL knob". Bryan Huff , how well does braided line work on bait casters, I am trying to get into bait casters, so I do not know much, but many people have said braid works well.
+Bryan Huff Backlashes are very easy to remove without having to cut them out, you just have to know how to remove them. A backlash is basically like a slip knot. At each point where the line is caught on itself there is a loop of line that has laid over and tucked under coils to the side. Look to see which direction the loop has laid over (right or left), grip the loop on the side opposite the direction it has laid over (in other words, grip the base of the loop), then pull it out (a small knitting needle works great for this). There are usually no more than 2-3 such spots to pull out in a backlash. With a little practice at it, you can remove most any backlash in one minute or less (and won't need a small knitting needle to do it anymore either).
Braid is a dream on baitcasters! It increases your casting distance. Most people recommend mini fir beginners, since a terrible bird nest that had to be cut out would be much less expensive.

After getting back into I just started pitching instead of casting. Not caring about distance and an extremely helpful hint. Practice makes perfect lol thanks for the video
Great work. Just some points I have found invaluable when teaching student. -Side casting to start with... they tend to keep their casting to a subtle toss as apposed to throwing the lure. - Have beginners use their dominant arm/hand to cast and other hand to turn the reel - Have new students learn to keep their thumb in contact with the spool/line. This is a great habit for getting the "feel" of any backlash and if they stop the lure at a specific target. Thanks again for the great explanation of the breaks and spool drag

Thanks, Bass Resource! Just finished my first year with my Quantum Pulse Bait caster reel. Went from 12 pd mono to 20 pd braid. There is a difference between mono and braid. When casting. I just had to get out on Jan 2nd. It was 52 degrees. But windy 15 mph. I had to adjust to every lure from a jerk bait to a hair jig with a senko trailer. Stayed at it for 3 hours. Adjusting to the conditions as I went a long bank fishing a park pond. Had alot of fun with my new Quantum ACCURIST PT S3 baitcaster reel and a Berkley Cherry wood medium heavy bait caster rod. This combo didnt like the jerk bait to much. Will go with a Diawa Elimnator medium action rod for lighter lures. Thanks again for your straight talk. No Bull! Advice. Shawn

BassResource - Bass Fishing Techniques I took the old ambassador 5000 and fished today, I caught a few bass on plastic worm and jigs and then with my sxrevo and rocket revo and frog fished , the old 5000 just doesn’t have enough drag pound tork with the bushing type drag , and caught a half dozen good bass.
I have to come back to this video every once in a while to correct bad habits lol. I am so use to using my Zebco Omega. I get frustrated with the baitcaster, and back to the Zebco I go. I fish in my farm pond mostly. I have a bass pro qualifier reel and an ugly stick, 6' medium rod. I really like fishing with weightless worms and I guess that where my trouble is. I just can't cast them. So, I seen some things I'm not doing and going to try them. Also looking at getting a 7' ugly stik with fast action. Thanks for the video Glenn!
Here in the UK 99% of bait casting and spinning reels sold and used are left hand wind, this is the way we've always fished. I've always found it strange that a right handed fisherman casts with his right hand then transfers the rod to his left hand to wind the reel.
All in all its not crazy bad for many older guys that went from spincast to baitcast without really using spinning. Plenty used to just because of their target species.
what? we usually use right hand wind reels. I personally use a left hand baitcaster for Wrasse fishing but thats because the bite comes on the drop of the lure.
I kept having problems..not casting consistently...I used a name brand quality reel vs my first store brand reel.. and wow the Lews felt so much better!! I went and got my own, spent a bit more and boom!! Still far to go, but progressed quickly..
I know that this is an older video but I just learned something. Normally I'm trying to get the most distance by bringing it back behind me and whipping it out there. But I've actually gotten more distance keeping the rod in front of me which forces me to cast it with less power. Thanks for the tips.
I'm guilty of trying to get distance right out the gate lol. Other casters though , I do pretty good but bait casters is against all that. Thanks for this awesome video. I plan on going fishing today later on.
I so think my casting will be better in tight spaces while bass fishing. Gonna have to make this change sooner or later . But! For the better . Will talk to someone at the store to recommend a good Set up thanks !
I agree with everything except the part where he says that a reel cast farther with the reel being vertical. Number one, a reel can have 20 bearings but that does not matter one bit because only 2 or 3 bearings are spinning on a cast. The spool bearings. None of the other parts move except on the old round reels like Abu Garcia. Number two, bearings are designed for loads perpendicular to the bearing. "Side loading" a bearing actually causes more friction. The difference is almost nonexistent because if you have the spool tension knob touching the shaft at all, it will erase any distance gain, but I just hate when people state "facts" that are not true.
chris smith salt water bait casters always false cast to wet the line and swear they get more distance with enough weight they obtain the distance if the flex is correct in casting
Actually, the pins ARE the cenTRIF'ugal brake. That knob by the handle is the spool tensioner (not a brake) and should only be tightened enough to eliminate all but a tiny bit of lateral play in the spool~ until you get your thumb "trained".
Thanks man this video really hit the nail on the head and when I first got the baitcaster I kept trying to throw it far and it keeps bird nesting on me and I came across this video and think I'm gotta better thank what I was 😂👍so I appreciate u for making this video really had a lots of details💉
Great tips....I just started using a baitcaster this year. Ive actually gotten pretty darn good with it! One thing I can never wrap my head around...I'm a righty and most people are rightys. Most baitcasters are made to be reeled with your right hand. If you cast with your right hand, its seems very counter productive to have to switch hands to reel with your right hand! I dont get it. All of my BCing reels are left hand reeling so I never have to switch hands off BUT.....they are not nearly as abundant as right handed reels. Why is this??? Is it just "tradition" that most reels cater to right handed reeling?? Thanks.
+The Bopper or this one lol!! 👍 Broke down and bought a right hand reel bait caster as I couldn't find a lefty ! Feels so odd trying to finesse a bait with the wrong hand! Ive reeled spinning rods left handed all my life , and now fishing "righty" bait caster is just weird🤕
I will never buy a right handed reel....ever. Just makes no sense to have to switch off hands after you cast! lol I know it's just a matter of training but as already mentioned. Just seems counterproductive.
You're just over analyzing it. It is helpful for pitching because you sometimes get bit as the lure hits the water. For the other 99% of the time, you still have to hold the rod with your other hand so the motion of casting, putting the left hand on the rod, and then moving your right hand to the reel handle, is almost instant. No gain at all and left handed reels are harder to sell when you buy new reels.
Thnx for the video man I'm thinking of buying my very first baitcaster rod and reel, for 25 yrs I've used spinner reels I want to learn something different lol...
I have reels with the centrifugal pin type brakes on inside of side plate, and magnetic brake adjustment dial on the outside of the same side plate, ALSO the spool tension knob on the handle side. This multi brake system will give you ways to easily dial in the proper spool speed for casting any lure without backlashes (except super light ones). Lew's makes several affordable reels of this type... ***SET-UP... 3-4 pin brakes in out position, brake dial on same side set on 7-8, tension knob on handle side slightly tight as lure falls slowly from rod tip... ( If your reel only has one type of braking, set that type the way I just mentioned above ) When learning to cast, it is easiest to leave about a foot of line hanging from rod. Then with a smooth sidearm motion, let the WEIGHT OF THE LURE swing out like a pendulum from the rod / reel. As you get better, you can work up to throwing overhand casts. The overhand cast is harder to learn. It may shoot straight up in the air. To keep your casts lower, begin with the sidearm swing cast. You can also hit your target more easily that way, and wont get frustrated.
BassResource - Bass Fishing Information I tried the hand shake, amazing difference. Keeping the cast in front of You! A lil hard to do when you are so used to your own ways hahaha, but managed, I think I will have it down in no time. Im going to try these tips out this weekend. Thanks for the video. Ive been fishing for years with a baitcasting rig and never heard of these techniques.
I wasnt able to get out on a boat but I did fish from shore. I adjusted the spool like you said and dialed in a setting that allowed me to cast far enough and keep backlashes at bay. I now adjust every time I change to a different bait. Minimal adjustments needed, just the small dial and only a click or two. I also, practiced the casting technique, handle facing up and my direction has improved tremedously. I still need to practice but now I know what to practice. Thanks for the information.
I never turn them off, thats why they are there, so you never have to deal with backlash, and as I got older I realized that sometimes I'm in a conversation or I'm always looking or searching for the next spot while casting, and it allows to not have to watch the lure all the way to the water....in other words I dont have to pay attention as much as when they are off, and thats a nice freedom to have.
Yes, I accidentally transposed the names of the centrifugal and spool tension names. Oops! LOL!!!

Thank you so much Glen that was so helpful. I just got 4 new baitcasters and I've never used them before. Bass Resource is the greatest teaching website. This will be my first season of actually knowing how to fish and it's all because of your forums and articles and videos. Thank god for people like you.
Thank you for the kind words! Folks like you are the reason why I do what I do. Good luck fishing this year!
Thank you for those clear and useful tips. I have only tried a baitcaster once and I was horrible at it. Now I know why. Looking forward to getting reacquainted with mine and learning how to use it.
Janet McPhail, glad I could help. Let me know which tips helped the most. Looking forward to hearing much more from you.
Hang in there kid, the learning curve is never ending.
Excellent video. I've been fishing for 50 years and picked up a few new tricks with your video.
Look forward to seeing your other videos.
Thanks for the support, Ron Bean, and thanks for watching!
No Bull! Advice. Shawn
That's awesome! Thanks for watching Shawn Beck!

Great to hear!
Just picked up my first baitcasting reel today, these tips will help a lot, thanks!
Glad it helped!
This is the first video I've watched that actually mentioned letting the bait hit the ground or water to test for backlash. They only talk about the rate of fall. 👍
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
thanks watched 5 or 6 vids this is the simplest i like that i'm scared of a baitcaster going to invest today hope i can do it
All my years using a spinning reel, this video helped a lot with using my new baitcasting reel. Though I'll probably make a few adjustments because I'll be using this for offshore fishing in California.
Glad to help, cinemasianx. Let me know how it works out as I would love to see the results.
Excellent tips! I can adjust and fine tune my reel, practice short targets and apply some pressure to prevent a backlash! Gonna watch this AGAIN!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
Great lesson on the new reel.I had forgotten the basics .Can't wait to get started again.
Jim Kapp, glad I could help. Let me know which tips helped the most. Looking forward to hearing much more from you.

Basic_Fishing, glad I could help. Let me know which tips helped the most. Looking forward to hearing much more from you.
@@bassresource primary on how to start on casting etc like a golf club. where as spinning u can just flick it over your shoulder, doesnt work so well with bait caster but flick it around the side and it works more smoothly
Man , Glenn......I learn so much watching your video's. I'm really , really new to the baitcaster reels ( Just got the Lew's Mach Crush reel / rod combo ). I haven't been able to fish with it yet , because I can't stop the backlash stuff I'm getting. I bought a practice weight today and am going to the park to get some practice in. Anyways.....thank you for all the tips on these things , and also all your other helpful videos you have posted.
The Real-Moderate, glad I can help. Thanks for subscribing as well.

excellent video. thank you for explaining the hows and the whys.
I started bait casting in the 1960s with ambassadors and my thumbs where condition to thumb the spool sides but now the center of the spool and the pistol grip rods hook sets where closer to the chest with shorter pistol grip rods, I am gonna pull out my old 5000 and see if I can old school bass fish your introduction is right on thank you
Great! Let me know how you do!
Magnetic brake or the centrifugal brake
is for the Beginning of the cast, the spool tension is for the end of the cast.
This was extremely helpful!
Glad you liked it Green Beret's Daughter!
Awesome video! You put everything I needed to know into words and made it very easy to understand. Thank you!

He is a Good teacher
Hi Jackson Vang. Thanks for the feedback and support. I look forward to hearing more from you.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
Great Job - I am a fan!
Here in the UK 99% of bait casting and spinning reels sold and used are left hand wind, this is the way we've always fished. I've always found it strange that a right handed fisherman casts with his right hand then transfers the rod to his left hand to wind the reel.
I'm an American and also feel that it makes nooooo sense. Transfers waste time and is very awkward to me. lolol
American, Floridian to be exact, don't understand it either... I'm right handed with a left hand reel.
canadian, find it strange as well... have fished both ways, my dad transfers and that's how i was taught
Thanks for watching Michael J!
I know that this is an older video but I just learned something. Normally I'm trying to get the most distance by bringing it back behind me and whipping it out there. But I've actually gotten more distance keeping the rod in front of me which forces me to cast it with less power. Thanks for the tips.
Glad you liked it Shurmash!
Thanks for the info.....that should help!
Glad you liked it LAF filmfest!
Great Video!
Thanks for the visit
Thank you so much for passing this on. So well explained.
For those who don't know what backlash is, its when the line builds up at the spool creating a "birds nest."
Great Video! I learned alot, thank you very much for the lesson
Very clear and helpful, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching Martin Lanza!
I'm guilty of trying to get distance right out the gate lol. Other casters though , I do pretty good but bait casters is against all that. Thanks for this awesome video. I plan on going fishing today later on.
Good luck!
This guy always teaches me good stuff!!!
We love to hear when we do a good job. Keep ‘em coming!
Great video, just moved up to Sanoma County. This video helped me alot!
Patrick Sullivan, glad I could help. Looking forward to hearing much more from you.
I so think my casting will be better in tight spaces while bass fishing. Gonna have to make this change sooner or later . But! For the better . Will talk to someone at the store to recommend a good Set up thanks !
Glad to help, Lsmoe3. Let me know how it works out as I would love to see the results.
Very informational and helpful
Glad you liked it
Thanks for video very informational found out why I backlash sometimes 👍🏻
Glad it was helpful!
Wow thanks for the info! I was more focus on distance😅 than accuracy
Glad it was helpful!
Great video - thanks for explaining in detail the different brakes and the sequence in which to set them up as until now for me it was a black art 👍
You're welcome Roger F Johnson! Thanks for watching.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
Thanks.
Right handed people cast and reel with their right hands. Nothing more to it than that.
Not this one. lol
Great! Let me know how you do!
( If your reel only has one type of braking, set that type the way I just mentioned above )
When learning to cast, it is easiest to leave about a foot of line hanging from rod.
Great tips! I can't wait to go out and try all this now!
Great! Let me know how you do!
BassResource - Bass Fishing Information
I tried the hand shake, amazing difference. Keeping the cast in front of You! A lil hard to do when you are so used to your own ways hahaha, but managed, I think I will have it down in no time. THANK YOU SIR!!!
haven't caught a Bass, but caught a couple of huge rainbow trout and a bull trout!
Thank you for the video have a good one
Same to you!
@@bassresource What type of fishing line would you recommend for a baitcasting reel? thin or thick? nylon or braided? does the thickness affect the possibilites of creating a birdsnest or no?
Thanks so much now I am able to use my bait caster!!
You welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you Sir. I'm new to casting. I will practice more
Your a bot
when i was a kid id sit a paper plate in the yard and practice for hours hitting it.
Excellent video. Great tips !!!!
Hmm never thought of the wrist angle like u explained. Will try thanks!
Very helpful video..Was wondering what lake you made this at 🤔
u r a great teacher/ i enjoied your lesson.
Thanks for the support, דניאל גרוסברד, and thanks for watching!
