My fav album of all time - not only by the band, not only in prog, not only in rock but of all genres! It's so great to see going into it. I can't even imagine anymore how it is listening to it for the first time. You are really great, thanks!
This Is the first Pink Floyd Album I got from a friend ! Thank you so much John fell In love with the sound ! Great to see someone young find It again priceless !
The production is so clever on this album. I especially like how they take you all over this spectrum that goes from animal noise to purely abstract synthesizer sound. Sometimes on "Dogs" you hear barking, and other times you hear this note which you can barely tell is a distorted dog bark. They use the actual sound and a synthesized mpression of that sound and go back and forth. They also create the impression of a sheep's "baahhh" on "Sheep," with Waters's voice. In typical Floyd fashion, they explore an idea so fully and from so many different angles without ever being boring.
Une information qui devrais t'intéresser en tant que Québécoise; The first rock concert given at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal was that of Pink Floyd on July 6, 1977, one year after the 1976 Montreal Olympics games. During this concert, the band played two complete album (Animals) and (Wish You Were Here). As an encore, they played the tracks (Money) + (Us and Them), followed by a 2nd encore (Drift Away Blues). At the end of this last encore, while roadies get the equipment out, Nick Mason was HILARIOUS, since at the end, he basically had nothing else but his seat and one of his drums. This concert still holds today the attendance record at the Olympic Stadium, with more than 80,000 spectators.
In fact, it wasn't the first rock concert at the Olympic Stadium following the 1976 games. Emerson, Lake & Palmer recorded their video (Fanfare For The Common Man) there in February 1977. In the middle of winter by -20 celsius and 18 inches of snow on the ground. However, there were no spectators in the stadium.
Brian Humphries engineered Animals so the separation of channels (left & right on headphones) that you like has a lot to due with him. Just like Alan Parsons engineered Dark Side of the Moon. Engineers are pretty important in regards to recording. Geoff Emerick engineered almost all of the Beatles output and Alan Parsons showed up on Abbey Road. These guys are important to the sound of albums. You don't get that any more.
I love the way you are discovering classic music. Back then we couldn't wait for the release of a bands new album. Would go to the record store then come home and do exactly what you're doing , listen to a whole side of an album then the other side. It was an expierience. Reading the lyrics & liner notes while listening. Sometimes buying 2 or 3 albums at a time and just immersing ourselves in the music.
I listened to this album A LOT as a teenager back in the 1980s. It's so full of black rage and grief, it's sometimes hard to listen to now as an adult - it's quite emotionally overwhelming! But of course still an incredible body of work.
Outstanding reaction (and thanks for doing the entire side1). When you get to side 2, you'll need to understand the overall concept (a re-imagining of George Orwell's novel "Animal Farm") to portray Roger's version of life in GB during the '70's. Simply put, the dogs represent 'big' business, the pigs are the political factions, and the sheep are the citizens getting screwed over by both. You can draw your own conclusions at the end. Thanks again for the analysis of a sonic masterpiece - absorbing the lyrics will take a little more time. (but ultimately well worth it). Sit back and enjoy - every PF album is a journey somewhere.
It's become one of my favorite albums of all time in recent years, but it's also hard to listen to sometimes when I think of how relevant it all still is.
The poetic lyrical style coupled with the way the songs flow into one another causes this masterpiece to shine in my opinion. The third or fourth listen, when you have a handle on the magnificent melodies and techniques of the music you will be able to focus on the story being told, the meaning behind the lyrics, and appreciate it even more. So. Good.
I can't imagine hearing this album for the first time again...You can't understand it's arrival to humanity...Unprecedented sounds, structure, style, etc... This came out when I was in highschool and already a PF fan... It's my favorite of theirs...
Hi Thom- you’re memory is a little fuzzy. They played the Animals tour at MSG in NYC in 1977. I know because I was there. They played all of Animals, all of Wish You were Here, and Time and Money from Dark Side. I was only 16 years old. I’ll never forget it. Was and still is the best concert I ever went to. The Fillmore East closed in 1971.
I bought this album on CD back in 1996 when I was still in high school. I had only heard a couple Pink Floyd songs before that, but damn I listened the hell out of this album getting high on endless country roads. Good times.
Animals is a brilliant beautiful album by pink Floyd after dark side and wish you were here very progressive one of my favourite very different than the rest still waiting for the re master copy lovely attention to detail keep it up beautiful comments by the way take care and thank you for the memories bye
You seemed to love the drums, the drummer is Nick Mason, it's so sad that he's been so underrated by the music industry. I always believe he just as good as Neil Pert (Rush), Bill Ward (Black Sabbath), or John Bonham (Led Zepplin). You, Miss Verdy, are becoming a Floydian just as I have been for the last 45 years. I'll be looking out for part 2 of "Animals" reaction. Peace and Love! ✌-❤
I think Mason is underrated. He’s definitely the right drummer for Floyd, embellishing and creating the perfect supporting structure for the soundscapes that make this band so great. He has a unique and interesting jazz inspired approach, however Neil Peart he is not and not Bonham either, I think any serious drummer including Mason himself would tell you that.
All the members in Floyd are master textural players, with Gilmour being the one member who could be considered a virtuoso. I don't think Mason has the technical chops of someone like Bonham or Peart, but I don't love him any less, in fact I like him more overall than Peart. Mason is like RIngo Starr. He plays what needs to be played, and it's perfect for the song.
@@gelsol Agreed for the most part. As a player I can never help preferring Peart as a player on every basis, but mason is perfect as part of a textural whole and he just fits so well with everything going on. In that sense it really sets him apart.
What makes Nick Mason so good is his groove/swing. I would argue his feel and groove is as good as Bill Ward and better than Bonham or Peart. Bonham and Pert were both more technical and power drummers, but neither could play as funky-in-the-pocket as Nick Mason or Bill Ward do (Echoes is maybe the best example, but he really just does it every time). Part of the reason I prefer Sabbath and Floyd to Rush or Zep.
This is one of my favourite PF albums, it is so meaningful and so reflective of our world. Timeless, the desire for power, the use of the dogs as enforcers. The fact that the dogs are expendable tools only occurs to them ( the dogs) when they get old and are no longer of use that the song hits home. It is spiritual on many dimensions. The dogs are ‘used’, the sheep are abused and the pigs don’t care.
I really love that you're listening to these entire albums, the way they were meant to be experienced. Also liking the fact that you're going through them in chronological order, from Dark Side of the Moon, so far. You should keep that up, then maybe work your way backward afterwards to see where and how they developed their sound. After Animals, The Wall. You may need to split that up into four parts as it's a double album. Please don't skip The Final Cut, it's fantastic and there aren't nearly enough reaction videos for it. I, and some others, tend to think of The Final Cut as a Waters album that's backed by Pink Floyd. I also tend to think of Momentary Lapse of Reason as a Gilmour album, before a return to a more of a full band effort put in with The Division Bell. Anyway, love what you're doing here. Keep up the good work. I love to see younger generations discover the music I grew up with. Looking forward to more.
@@nealturner7348 Final Cut is undoubtedly Roger Waters' solo project but I wouldn't say that about The Wall. Gilmour and even producer Bob Ezrin (The Trial) are signed on a few tracks on this album.
Hey, glad I found the channel. And a great reaction to my favorite Pink Floyd album. To me, this was David Gilmour's tour de force. He even plays bass on most of the album. Merci, and cheers from Toronto. 🎵🤘🇨🇦
Growing up in the 60s my conception of the 70s was that of a great dropoff, musically. When disco hit I retreated into discovering classical music, with a few excursions into Zappa, Kraftwerk, and the Greateful Dead. I only really discovered the incredible work Pink Floyd was doing during this era much later, and the fact that their output still sounds timeless is a testament to its worth. It's gratifying seeing a member of a younger generation making the exact same discoveries. Animals is one of their tidiest and most insightful works.
LOL Me too. Instead of classical I found jazz. I started listening my Dad’s big band jazz records and then really got into BeBop which I still listen to nearly daily.
I really enjoyed this reaction video 😃 You seemed like you were quite engrossed and loving the aural soundscape that Animals creates. The Lyrics paint often depressing or horrific visions in your mind while the majestic music penetrates your soul. It's a strange combination that blends beautifully, and is without doubt a masterpiece. I consider Animals to be my favourite Pink Floyd album, and i personally think it's Pink Floyd at the peak of their powers. Lyrically and musically Animals is a Tour De Force of the Progressive Rock Genre and a damn fine album indeed. Great reaction video 👍
The whistling signals at around 16'20" to 16'50" are a shepherd commanding his sheepdog, which fits nicely with concepts on one of the other tracks ("Sheep") as well.
Thank you for reacting to these albums properly! I subscribed weeks ago when I saw your first Floyd video and have been enjoying them ever since! Can’t wait till you get to The Wall, and then Delicate Sound of Thunder.
when iot starts building up in the last miniute of the song, and the drums are just beating & everything going on, it nearly brings tears to my eye it sounds so good. To me this album is possibly THE best album they ever put out, because it can take you so many places emotionally.
Sadly, Animals sort of marks when Pink Floyd ceased to be a cohesive unit and became Roger Waters' backing band. Dogs and Sheep were based on Gotta Be Crazy and Raving and Drooling which they'd been performing at gigs. Waters split his song Pigs on the Wing into two parts to bookend the album and wrote the rather awful Pigs himself which meant Gilmour, Wright and Mason came away from the project with co-writing credits only for Dogs and Sheep. During sessions for The Wall Waters' megalomania reached its zenith, culminating in him sacking Rick Wright. And this was just the start of their problems. At the time though we knew nothing of this and were just thrilled to have another Floyd album. My god, when Sheep hit that riff at the end I thought my head would explode. Then again shortly afterwards New Wave hit hard and I didn't listen to the Floyd again for at least ten years.
hey i love your passion for music, keep rocking, your list of followers will grow fast, continue to be real, it shows your authentic unlike many other reactors
I just want to recommend using some type of noise limiter or something. There’s an unfortunate high pitch humming sound on your mic through this reaction.
I've heard the noise previously on this Channel. Previously, I thought she may be using a desktop that requires dust cleaning out. Today it sounds like someone hoovering.
It's electrical interference. As a guitar player, I can tell you we deal with interference all the time. Single coil pickups always pick up a constant hum from the electricity itself. Then we have to watch out for computers, monitors, tv's, phones, vapes, remote controls, fluorescent lights, sun spots, even power tools being used down the street, they all make audible noise through the amp. But then there's also just bad wiring in your house. That'll create all sorts of audible noise too. When I play guitar, I literally have to turn off everything else, and keep the guitar at a 90 degree angle from the amp to minimize noise. If I face the amp, or have my back to it, loads of unwanted noise.
@@rebeccabailey527 yup I play guitar too. Lol. Hence recommending a noise limiter which btw you can get for your guitar too. They have limiter pedals. They’re called noise gates. 👍
Hey, Miss Verdy. Great react. You're an official Floyd fan now. I was a drummer but Pigs On The Wing was the first song I learned on acoustic guitar. And I learned bass playing to this album. This album was all written by Roger and the one where he started to exert more control over the band. The cracks began to appear on WYWH and only widened with this one. Regardless, it's a fantastic album. Darker than previously. It's theme deals with types of people in society. Roger was somewhat inspired by Orwell's Animal Farm novel. Enjoyed your react (and your smile). Regards to 🇨🇦 from Illinois 🇺🇸
Yeah I think Roger's 'voice' on the album starts to dominate, and although it's still brilliant, I find it a little hard to listen to in its entirety. It's genius, but uncomfortable.
Loving your Pink Floyd journey!!! Musically and lyrically amazing. Your enjoyment is so obvious. When you get done, try Yes, Close To The Edge album 1972.
The is my go-to Floyd album because it's so light and dry compared to the albums that surround it. The empty space in the mix is designed to feel it for ourselves (??)
I'm very surprised to find someone on TH-cam who really understands and appreciates great music...and listens to entire albums! Quite rare here. Thank you and nice to meet you. I'll be waiting to see what you are up to next...like Abbey Road maybe? Good luck with your channel. And one last thing, what accent is that I'm detecting?
This one of those albums, well cassette back then that would just go on and on never had an ending especially if you were trippin good, brings back so many good memories a masterful and classic album.
Yes, didn't the 8-track cartridge link back to the beginning on continuous loop, so Snowy White recorded a bridging section so both parts of Pigs on the Wing formed a continuous whole? I think that version is on his Goldtop album.
This is also in my top three of their 15 studio albums, however, this and "Wish You Were Here" stay at the top two!! Of course, "Dark Side of the Moon" is their best album! I do want you to grab one song from each of their other 12 studio albums!! I would suggest 'Jugband Blues" off 1968 album to conclude the last time Syd Barrett sung for this band!! (and only time on this album) ... "Saucerful of Secrets"
I really like your reactions to PF a lot! One of the best reactors to the band in my humble opinion. To your early point about the drum patterns in "Dogs," many (I and others) have commented on various reactors' PF reaction videos that Nick Mason is pretty underrated as a drummer. He even thinks of himself as just average (or something to that effect); he doesn't think he's bad--just not great. However, Nick Mason's own view of himself notwithstanding, he is much better than many realize. He's about one of the most solid, consistent drummer/percussionists in rock music. I doubt he'll make a list or be featured in a show about the greatest rock drummers, but the space he allows for the music ("Comfortably Numb" is a good example), the just-right fills ("Dogs" is a great example), the balance in drum-solo-like features (the beginning of "Time" is the best example) all show that he is the most appropriate drummer for this combination: David Gilmour and his guitar, Rick Wright and his keyboard/synthesizer, and Roger Waters and his bass. Sure, drummers like Neil Peart, Max Roach, Bill Bruford, Buddy Rich, Carl Palmer, Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, etc. (forgive all the name-dropping) will be at the top of most lists, along with others--and rightly so--but Nick Mason has carved out his own place of greatness not for standing out, but for fitting-in the best. Keep up the great format, and I appreciate your work!
I read Nick putting himself down once for not being trained; though he said he had about 2 weeks' training at some point later on, but didn't take to it. When you listen to him talking about tuning his drums, it's clear he's an absolute expert, self-taught or otherwise!
Saw nick in a 2,000 seat venue with his saucer full of secrets band a couple years ago. It was really easy to appreciate his unique artistry in a venue of that size.
I loaned this album to my nephew when he was 19. He's now 34 and I'm still waiting for him to return it.
I don't think you're going to get it back. I think you might as well go out and buy another copy.
I think that might have been a gift.

He Will keep it! So.. Buy a New remastered one and the original as well! 😉

Same here.
Animals has always been my favorite too
@@chrisbanks6659 Sure dose!
I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed watching someone listening to the polished music of Pink Floyd so much as I did watching you, the way you analyzed the song was so perceptive, I bought this album when it first came out, I went to the concert in 77 thank you so much, now I’m going to watch you listen to the rest of Animal’s and more
Love this album ….one of my Floyd favorites!
Une information qui devrais t'intéresser en tant que Québécoise;
The first rock concert given at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal was that of Pink Floyd on July 6, 1977, one year after the 1976 Montreal Olympics games.
Dave Gilmour shows that you don't need a lot of quick notes to create a beautiful solo.
„Animals” Pink Floyd”s best album and one of the best albums ever. I already mentioned the song Dogs … the best.
Excellent Verdy! I recommend you to listen "Atom Heart Mother" too. Greeting from Argentina!
Oh my goodness, Verdy, yes! It's not as polished as some of their later albums, but it's still high quality (production and creativity).
Saw them do this album live at the Fillmore East in NYC. They were one of the bands that live, sounded like the album, note for note. Incredible !
Thanks, great album to review
I bought this album on CD back in 1996 when I was still in high school. I had only heard a couple Pink Floyd songs before that, but damn I listened the hell out of this album getting high on endless country roads. Good times.
You seem to be using the same model air guitar I use on this album.
Nick Mason is by far the most underrated ever.
Pompeii movie is all about his masterclass drumming
Part of the reason I prefer Sabbath and Floyd to Rush or Zep.
reaction is a+++ as is the Lp Love the young folk tuning in.
best band of all times 😎👍
This is one of my favourite PF albums, it is so meaningful and so reflective of our world. Timeless, the desire for power, the use of the dogs as enforcers. The fact that the dogs are expendable tools only occurs to them ( the dogs) when they get old and are no longer of use that the song hits home. It is spiritual on many dimensions. The dogs are ‘used’, the sheep are abused and the pigs don’t care.
deffo my most fave of all the floyd albums
Agreed. Both are great "solo" albums, operating under the Pink Floyd banner. 👍
@@nealturner7348 Final Cut is undoubtedly Roger Waters' solo project but I wouldn't say that about The Wall. Gilmour and even producer Bob Ezrin (The Trial) are signed on a few tracks on this album.
@@lubos1207 I didn't say that about The Wall. I said it about The Final Cut and Momentary Lapse of Reason, like the commenter I responded to said. 👍
Hey, glad I found the channel. And a great reaction to my favorite Pink Floyd album. To me, this was David Gilmour's tour de force. He even plays bass on most of the album. Merci, and cheers from Toronto. 🎵🤘🇨🇦
One of many great albums of all times
Favorite Pink Floyd album. So perfect.
I really enjoyed this reaction video 😃
You seemed like you were quite engrossed and loving the aural soundscape that Animals creates.
Its refreshing to see someone listening to Pink Floyd like it should be listened too in album form. thank you, keep them coming
Great review love your emotion and smile
Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are on another level. They're for the ADVANCED music listener. 💥👍😎
And Deep Purple
And Justin Bieber 😇
My Favorite Pink Floyd album!
Nick Mason is definitely underrated, glad to see you giving him the props he deserves. Can't wait for Part 2.
the first and last guitar solo with drums in "dogs" often makes me think of another guitar/drum solo in Mark Knopfler's Speedway to Nazareth.
Thank You! 🙏 Everyone else is only reacting to Dark Side of the Moon 😁👍
The whistling signals at around 16'20" to 16'50" are a shepherd commanding his sheepdog, which fits nicely with concepts on one of the other tracks ("Sheep") as well.
My personal favorite Floyd album.
Thank you for reacting to these albums properly! I subscribed weeks ago when I saw your first Floyd video and have been enjoying them ever since! Can’t wait till you get to The Wall, and then Delicate Sound of Thunder.
Loved your reaction, reminds me of my first time listening to this album.
You have such a good ear. You will find so many details that I never thought of. And then I've been listening to this album since it came out.
when iot starts building up in the last miniute of the song, and the drums are just beating & everything going on, it nearly brings tears to my eye it sounds so good.
Agreed, I noticed it too.
I've heard the noise previously on this Channel. Previously, I thought she may be using a desktop that requires dust cleaning out. Today it sounds like someone hoovering.
Sounds like a fan or something. We all love these videos, so maybe we could pitch in and buy her a nice microphone! 🎙 😊
9:58 just one of the best drop of all time casually played by a acoustic guitar and a fuc*in dog
Your reactions are on point.... keep em coming.
Another awesome journey my Fellow Full Fledged Floydian.
I've watched some of your reactions to some classic, all time great albums and I must say, you can't stop smiling says it all.
god you have gotten into them havent ya ? i love floyd !!!!!!!
Fantastic job with your reaction to the Animals Album from Pink Floyd . I enjoy watching you enjoying Amazing Music .😊🎵
The echo of the word stone turns into a siren
15:30 on this part we are under water. that's why everything sound like that. it's a whole story being told
🥰 Thanks for an awesome reaction! 🤗 I love that you get PF! 😁🐰
Looking forward to part two!
I love the way you feel the music and get into it, reminds me of me. Really enjoy your reactions to all this classic music.
This is my desert island album and there is nothing that is even a close second.
This one kind of flies under the radar but maybe my favorite album by them.
"You'll get the chance to put the knife in" is every business conference with a wish.
A long winded way to say "yeah sure he's not one of the best and even he knows it but I just happen to like him"
