    I taught Orwell's "Animal Farm" for 10 years in university... During the last lesson, I'd play "Animals" in the background... Happy to say that I turned on more than a few students to the brilliance of Pink Floyd... IMHO Animals is the absolute first album I go to when I’m in a Floyd mood, regardless of how the members feel about it. Creativity doesn’t necessarily correlate to listenability. Dogs is an amazing song that I never, ever tire of.
    It’s sad that the great mind of Waters turned him into a intolerable egomaniac. I always felt bad for Rick Wright, as his keyboard playing was intrinsic in creating their sound. Miss that guy 😔

      "Creativity doesn't correlate to listenability." That's quite false perspective tbh, I mean both creativity and listenability can also coexist together i.e. Both this album and basically any Coldplay's early release are similarly laid back and simple and practically easy to listen, but ultimately which one is really the better, most listenable album for you? Let's not forget how absolutely incredible Piper at the Gates of Dawn was. That was basically the first album of it's kind, and it still sounds unique and brilliant to this day. Such a unique blend of rock, psychedelia, folk, and pop was unheard of for it's time.. and really hasn't been done nearly as well since. Plus the transformation that they were forced to go through post Syd's departure is in my opinion the greatest turnaround and evolution that a band has ever undergone. It took em' a few years.. but when they finally found their sound... well.. the rest is history.

    I worked on the European version of this tour- as merchandiser. The first few shows were not very together and they took a few days off, sent the crew and equipment to Antwerp to rehearse the cues to a backing track while the band went back to London to rehearse. I was very pleased to get this gig because I had been watching the Floyd since 1967 at UFO and Middle Earth but the sound on the first few gigs, Dortmund in particular, was very ragged. By the time they got back to England to do the shows there they were spot on.

    Dogs is a masterpiece and one of the best crafted guitar works of Gilmour. From his opening haunting acoustic chord progressions to the double lead guitar tracking to the killer solo. It really sets the mood and plays well with the lyrics and sentiment of the song. IMHO the only modern day song close to the feeling of Dogs is Porcupine Tree's epic Anesthetize from their Fear of a Blank Planet album.

    "Animals" was the last classic Pink Floyd album. Fortunately, I got to see their "Animals/Wish You Were Here" tour, complete with flying pig and circular screen, at Stafford New Bingley Hall (that's a photo of the venue at 16:00) in '77, which was astounding, as you can imagine!
    The pig was great, apart from the barrage of cigarette packets and beer cans that greeted its flight over the crowd, one of which smacked a girl right in front of me on the back of the head!
    And all for £3.50!
    If they did the same thing these days, the tickets would probably cost a hundred times as much!

      And yet he wasn't Pink. He didn't sing the majority of the material, and David wrote ALL of the guitar virtuosity, which is 90% of what hooks you into listening to Floyd. Roger was an incredible lyricist, and an average musician. His solo albums were awful, and The Final Cut was the worst PF album next to Ummagumma.

    From "Dark Side of the Moon" through to "The Wall"...no band that I know besides Led Zeppelin has ever created such a musical statement over 4 consecutive albums. These guys were brilliant together as far as the music goes. Unfortunately Roger wanted total control over that aspect of it too which basically put an end to that. I saw 2 Pink Floyd concerts without Roger being there and they were both awesome. The effects and everything were very well received by a Detroit audience and it proved to me that one man don't make a band great, they all have to do it for it to be great. Roger was left out of that party.

      I don't know, while they may not be given credit they deserve, ELP should be mentioned, Yes' Yes Album through Tormato or even Genesis' Nursery Cryme-Trick of a Tail. Especially Yes and Genesis' lyrics. But then, one could argue the same for Rush.

    • @stoneysdead689
      @stoneysdead689 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vitoguido3258 I love "Yes" and Peter Gabriel, both with and without Genesis, but neither of these bands came anywhere close to having the kind of impact Floyd has had. You ask someone like my dad- who unfortunately passed a few years back- who Yes or Peter Gabriel is and he would've had no idea- he played bluegrass music and hated rock, pop, etc.- but he knew who Pink Floyd was. MY mother- same way- her favorite artist is Ann Murray- but she knows who Pink Floyd is, everyone does. When I was a kid growing up in the late 70s, early 80s- I knew who they were before I even started listening to music. I already knew who they were and was curious to hear their music because I had heard so much about it through pop culture, my older siblings, etc. I had never heard of Yes though- or Peter Gabriel- in fact the only other musical talent I knew of at that age was Zepplin. They were just as talked about, just as large of a part of pop culture as Floyd was.

    • @vitoguido3258
      @vitoguido3258 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stoneysdead689 Hence why I mentioned the lack of credit due. However, while Floyd's early stuff is interesting, to say the least, Dark Side of the Moon through The Wall only accounts for 5 out of like 14 albums. While their presence was certainly felt in the mainstream, Yes' and Genesis influence was just felt throughout the Prog world at large, in my opinion and the body of substantial work to offer far exceeds that of Floyd. Still, at the end of the day, I'm a junky for all of it.
