I've never been divided by Animals, I personally think its a masterpiece on par with DSOTM and Wish You Were Here. I also read George Orwell novels as a child growing up, so I understood the themes in Animals early on. Thanks for the review!
The way they make Roger's vocals turn into a sax solo on "The Gunner's Dream" blows my mind every time I hear it -- and I've heard it like 100 times now.
I didn’t know anyone was divided on Animals lol I think it’s their last true great album The Wall is was more divisive imo (and no where near as good as a whole)
Where have you gone? I love watching your videos - you are so much more insightful than other reviewers who inauthentically react to older music. I like how you break it down and hone in on the chord changes, melody, and insightfulness of the band. There are so many great albums/bands - Nick Drake, Procol Harum, REM, Toni Childs, etc. Looking forward to your next TH-cam!
As I understand it, the album "Animals" is Pink Floyd's answer to George Orwell's novel "Animal Farm". "Animal Farm" is simply put about communism - "Animals" is about capitalism. There are 3 kinds of animals (represented by the 3 main songs on the album): - Pigs -> politicians who rule us, depicted as "fakes" and crooks ("haha, charade you are!"). - Dogs -> corporations & their executives, depicted as egotistical and merciless sociopaths ("You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to, so that when they turn their backs on you you'll get the chance to put the knife in") - Sheep -> the rest of us, the common people -> docile fools who follow their overlords obediently to their slaughter ("The Lord is my shepherd...with bright knives He releaseth my soul, he maketh me to hang on hooks in high places, he converteth me to lamb cutlets"). At the end of the last song the sheep rebel and kill their masters... ^^ - To make the album not completely cynical and filled with anger the added a short intro song and a short outro song ( Pigs on a Wing, Part 1 & 2 ) with a message of hope. :-)
2:30 That technique is called a "pinch harmonic". You allow your thumb or finger to slightly brush the string after it is picked which cancels or quietens the fundamental frequency of the string and allows the harmonic overtones to ring out.
I have gone back and forth so many times with Pink Floyd albums. But, one thing that’s interestingly been consistent for me is that Dark side of the Moon has never been first. Of course I love it, but the other 3 have always changed places at number one. When The Wall came out, I flipped my wig! I couldn’t believe an album could be so great. Not since something from the Beatles. But, weirdly enough, Wish You Were Here (mostly because of Shine on You Crazy Diamond) and Animals have gone to 1 and 2 or 2 and 1 😊. I have REALLY REALLY taken a new appreciation for Animals. And I’ve listened to it a hundred times. But it is truly something else. The lyrics and the music - it’s all crazy good. Especially Sheep, Dogs, and, Pigs (3 different ones). 3 completely different vibes, in such long pieces, from one band, on one album. Someone mentioned Obscured by Clouds - definitely a good one (personal favorite is the song ‘Wots uh… The Deal’ - so pretty) But besides the iconic 4 albums, my personal favorite of all is Meddle. Top to bottom, love it all. Echoes could be my top Pink Floyd song ever. That album introduced me to Pink Floyd, so maybe I’m a little bias. But it’s just so good!! P.S. - Caroline I have enjoyed your reactions to music so much through the last couple years, I think it’s been? You just have a way. I am always really satisfied when you like what I like, but I am always really disappointed when you don’t like so much what I truly do like. I think that’s cuz I care a lot about what you think. I think that makes you a good music reactor to watch 😊
One fun fact: the 8 track version of this album has a guitar solo in Pigs on the Wing. 8 tracks go back to the beginning in a continuous loop, and the “lost guitar solo” joins the two Pigs of the Wing parts as the album loops.
Those four albums might be the best four consecutive albums every created by any band ever. Four amazing albums in a row. Even The Beatles had Magical Mystery Tour and Yellow Submarine mixed in with their last 6 albums.
For me the list starts at AHM, through Meddle and OBC (#5 in my PF albums ranking) then onto the BIG 4. But I think PF’s output from ‘70-‘79 was the greatest decade for a band of all time, equaled only by the Beatles ‘62-‘69. While “Let It Be” was released in ‘70, it was essentially recorded before “Abbey Road” and is thus a Sixties album in my opinion, this that was in the ‘62-‘69 period in my opinion. But I digress.
This album is a masterpiece. Not sure if it’s something you can listen to everyday, but it’s one of my favorite Floyd albums. I think you got its lyrical messages. Love your reactions to these classic albums.
For me DOGS is everything. My favorite. Ingenious poetry. The repetition of theme. It's the answer to: Why do you wanna be an artist? There's no money in it.". Check out Seinfeld's joke about the jazz band in the snow. 🙏❤️
When I was younger I didn't care much about Animals besides Dogs, but now it's probably one of my top 3 favourites of them. You should check Meddle, such a trip.
I think it is great that you can listen to and appreciate the music I grew up with. Animals was a fantastic departure album from the other music of the day and one of my favorite PF works! If only more of your generation were inclined to visit this music era I believe they would expand their portfolio of knowledge. Thanks for doing this…
Great review. When it came out, i was pleasantly surprised at the difference to the previous 2 albums. But I thought then and still do that they continued to expand what rock music could be.
I really liked the return to the rankings you did with pet sounds and would love to see that in future videos. To me seeing how songs grew on you separated the videos from the sea of other react.
The "stone" referenced here is about the practice of farmers drowning old dogs by tying a heavy stone to them and throwing them in a pond or lake (from Orwell's Animal Farm, one of the basis for this album). "Dragged down by the stone."
Thank you. If you need more reaction material may I suggest Supertramp? Maybe start with their Crime of the Century album…. Thanks again for sharing your reactions.
Lots of innovative synthesizer work by Richard Wright on this album (based on "Animal Farm" by George Orwell). I had this on 8-track tape when it first came out.
Love the 8 track with the full extended version of "Pigs On The Wing". The songs did have different titles but yes, it was based on that. So tired yet this morning that I forgot to mention the book it is based on. Yup, I had my 8-track copy when it first came out too. It came out when I was 16. Pink Floyd was my favorite band all throughout my high school days. Love them!
I never knew there was any kind of controversy surrounding this album. I was a kid when this album came out and my older brother had it. I love it then, and the album has continued to grow along with me these many years.
IMO, Floyd's greatest period was between Atom Heart Mother and DSOTM. You will love side one of Atom Heart Mother. Then check out Meddle, especially Echoes. The live tracks from Ummagumma are good too. Also, the version of "Careful With That Axe Eugene" ("Come in Number 51, Your Time Is Up") on the film soundtrack Zabriskie Point is sublime.

I think this is amazing work by Waters. Above that though is I think Gilmour absolutely kills it on this album. His guitar work throughout is insanely good
Animals is probably one of my fav albums ever, and a hugely creative thematic whole. Sheep is my fav piece on the album but the entire thing is transformative. it also got me checking out Orwell to get the genesis of the theme. this is one album i could not live without
I was nervous to watch this vid, BUT imo Caroline really grokked the bulk of Animals, which is def one of my fav Floyd lps. If you ever have 20 min to spare, please watch Water's live MxCity performance of Pigs (3 diff ones), which he overtly aims at TheDonald just before the 2016 prez election... Incredible!
I’m glad you’re appreciating the genius of Pink Floyd. If I may make a suggestion, another band I love in that same thematic, story line album style is Marillion. Think Pink Floyd meets Genesis. Try the album Clutching At Straws or Misplaced Childhood.
I'm so bad at Pink Floyd song titles, because I used to have their albums as single mp3 files, and some of the songs don't exactly have super obvious titles. I think all of their albums are better when listened to in full, but especially this one.
My ist floyd album i bought was wish you were here as a 15 year old i loved it and its still their best album, i Couldnt wait for animals to come out and at the time it took me a while to appreciate it fully and now as a 64 year old i still listen to it a lot and its really grown on me over the years, to me its their third best album and im glad to see someone so young enjoying a classic floyd album !!! But thats the great thing about the floyd you have so many great albums to listen to!!!
Ironically, I love Rick Wright's keyboards as much on this album as on any Floyd record. "Sheep" and "Dogs" were originally written before the Wish You Were Here album, and were played live as "Raving and Drooling" and "You've Got To Be Crazy". When the band got together at Abbey Road for the WYWH session, they were unhappy with how the songs were not fitting together thematically, and then "Shine On" magically appeared to cement the album together. So the two other tracks were temporarily abandoned until Waters read Animal Farm and they retooled them for the Animals album.
I have seldom been moved like I have from watching this video. I am a little embarrassed to admit it, but I stopped brushing my dogs teeth so I could watch it with my kids. We later called grandma and told her we would be home for Christmas.
It's a great album. I saw the Animals Tour 1977 in Dortmund, Germany. It was amazing, and yes, the Pig was flying through the hall. Still got my ticked which has the 'Wish you were here' album cover on it. The Animals cover was not available yet in Germany. So it's sort of special.
Very much enjoying these first listen videos! May I suggest you listen to Electric Light Orchestra? I’m not sure if you’ve listened to them much before, but I feel like they would be right up your alley in terms of musically and sonically unique pop/rock from the 1970s. They produced many really good albums. I would recommend trying out their album “A New World Record” from 1976 for starters!
Sheep is my favorite because of the messages in the synthesized voices, it is very subtle, but weird and satisfying in an unusual way. I owned this album for years until I was ready to really listen to it, so this album is one that grows on you after a long while. Still I rank Dark Side of the Moon not only their best album, but the best album of all time. So it is hard to rank albums against it.
It’s an underrated and forgotten album by the masses. The masses think Dark Side, the Wall, and maybe Wish You Were Here were the only Pink Floyd albums. Floyd fans know better. Caroline there are also some great live bootlegs of this album out there. They really jam from my hometown Cleveland, Ohio Cleveland Stadium in 1977.
This feels kind of like a record review, as there’s not much content of music actually being listened to. More like a response to a response already having a theme(based on what you had been told about the album). Felt kind of like a report. Glad you enjoyed it. Would have liked more of seeing you enjoying it.
Great analysis and I think you nailed it, glad you enjoyed (as we knew you would) and didn't listen to the naysayers - Animals is a great album, a particular flavour, yes, but a brilliant piece of work.
Underappreciated is the word I use to describe this album and Meddle. I'm a huge fan of Pink Floyd's music and whenever they take their time building up a song, I especially enjoy it. It helps you appreciate the album if you have read George Orwell's Animal Farm, but it's only helpful in the broadest of senses.
I was taken aback by this when it came out in 1977 (yes, I am that old), but it's gone on to become probably my favourite Floyd album. You would be hard pressed to find such compressed and sustained anger anywhere else on record.
Nice review. Always good to share a few minutes listening to music with you. Animals is the last great Floyd album for me, they sort of lost me with The Wall and beyond. (Although I will say Pulse is terrific, especially the video concert with the amazing visual experience of Comfortably Numb). Rick Wright's problems with the group are well documented, but his keyboards are an integral part of the Floyd sound. It was so good to see and hear him return to the fold later on, at Live8, and touring with Dave. So, when are you going to listen to The Who? 🙂
I wasn't aware that this was a divisive album. It is just slightly less popular than those others because there are no 'hits' on it, so there are fewer casual listeners. But as far as the actual fanbase is concerned, it's always been appreciated I think.
For "Wish You Were Here" you have to have a pint or whatever you drink, turn off the lights, put your headphone volume up as much as you can tolerate, and just veg out to this masterpiece 😊
Not sure who's described this album as divisive. It didn't divide me. I listened on a whim a couple weeks ago for the first time in decades. Still love. Gilmour's solo on Dogs is incendiary
I like Animals a lot. It reminds me in a lot of ways of their last Roger Waters album, Final Cut. Not sure if you ever did that last album, but I hope you did. Final Cut is very similar to Waters' solo album Pros And Cons Of Hitchhiking (which is stellar). Those two albums are kind of sister-albums. I was thinking about how I'd rank the Pink Floyd albums of the 1970s, and it's really difficult. Because each album is so personal and conveys such different narratives. It seems to me that whichever album I'm listening to at any time is going to be my favorite. lol
I don't know if I consider it my favorite album but it is the one I turn to most t may be because it was released in 1977 which was an important year for me. I love all the albums after darkside of the moon dogs is my favorite track, I find your reactions delightful
"Animals" is probably my favorite Pink Floyd album. It is consistent and riveting from the first note to the last. "Wish You Were Here" is probably my second favorite, and "Meddle" would have to be third. "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall" are great, but my top three are truly immersion albums for me and I can get lost in the feeling when listened to from beginning to end without interruption. No matter what are your favorites, every Pink Floyd album is a masterpiece.
Hi Caroline. Excellent journey you're on here. On "Sheep" you should take note of the long held note: If you listen you kan hear it starts out as a vocal but suddenly you discover that it has changed to a guitar tone. Where did that happen? It has always fascinated me. It is so well produced and "inter-faded" 😀
my favorite group always has been, waiting in battersea for bus from work saw a pink pig flying over battersea power station ropes had got loose little did i know until brought album 6 months later there it was my claim to fame 1979
This is an album I think you have to wait for it to mature in your brain. The first few times I heard it I didn't like it that much even though there were some great moments in it. Over the years it's grown on me and it's landed up there with dark side of the moon and wish you were here. I think people's brains have to catch up with how the world really works to really understand this album!
My third favourite Pink Floyd album, after "Wish You Were Here" and "The Dark Side Of The Moon". Fourth fav is "The Division Bell", followed by "Meddle". That's my top five. "DSOTM" used to be in the n°1 spot but it fell off after over-exposure to it. "Welcome To The Machine" from "Wish You Were Here" is the Pink Floyd song I like the most. Although I have three songs at number one, depending on the mood I'm in when asked about it. The other two are "Time (DSOTM)" and "Echoes (Meddle)". Cheerio downunderlander. Warm greetings from Belgium.
As someone who listened to The Wall day of release, and was familiar with all the other albums, it surprised me when I got the compilation Echoes and realized I'd never heard Sheep before... I'd somehow missed Animals! So I listened. That was 2021.

Yep. Dark Side is a Classic but ..... THIS is my Fave Floyd Album .....
Since you're a fellow theater lover, I knew you were bound to at least like this album. I think it's brilliant
I was taken aback by this when it came out in 1977 (yes, I am that old), but it's gone on to become probably my favourite Floyd album. You would be hard pressed to find such compressed and sustained anger anywhere else on record.
Super relevant in this day and age
I agree with you this is a wonderful album, perhaps not with quite the musical or lyrical complexity of DSOM or The Wall but excellent none the less.
This album is great....i had no idea (being a floyd fan for over 30 years) people didn't like it?
Don't forget about Meddle. The song Echoes on it sounds just like it could have been on Dark Side (without the weird middle)
Obscured by Clouds & Meddle are very satisfying listening experiences back to back
What makes it Divisive? It’s a great Album! It’s all about us people in society snd the different roles we play in!
So does anyone ever listen to their album Ummagumma?
Yes. I love it.
Having the lyrics as you listen greatly increases the trip
i personally like this album better than the wall
also dogs is a masterpiece, definitely one of my favorite floyd songs of all time
Nice review.
My absolute favorite Pink Floyd album❤. Easily some of their best work with their best album cover 🔥
I wasn't aware that this was a divisive album. It is just slightly less popular than those others because there are no 'hits' on it, so there are fewer casual listeners. But as far as the actual fanbase is concerned, it's always been appreciated I think.
I think most people would agree this is an amazing album. Never heard anyone say otherwise 🤷♂️
Please Come Back.
I listen to the whole album with my eyes closed, written in 1977 but still very relevant, sad but true, Roger is a real visionary imo.
It seems to me that whichever album I'm listening to at any time is going to be my favorite. lol
Hope you are doing well Caroline 😊❤
I don't know if I consider it my favorite album but it is the one I turn to most t may be because it was released in 1977 which was an important year for me. I love all the albums after darkside of the moon dogs is my favorite track, I find your reactions delightful
This is my Fave Floyd album! Next try Meddle, the album before Dark Side, and side 2 is just one song, "Echos". Killer!
It took like 20 years of being a Floyd fan before Animals eventually became my clear favorite
In my HS as a freshman I was made to choose either DSOTM or Animals as my favorite PF album. I also had to choose Led Zeppelin or Rolling Stones.
It is so well produced and "inter-faded"
😀
I never noticed that until hearing it in this video! Thought I was imagining things, so thanks for convincing me I'm not mad! 😄
Also check out similar technique in Gunner's Dream (Final Cut): Roger's voice perfectly transitions into a saxophone.
@@chris-pee Cool, all this Pink Floyd talk made me want to listen to The Final Cut again, so I'll keep my ears peeled for that!
@@chris-pee Just checked that one out, yes, same technique. Really impressive how well this is produced.😀
I think the album is pure genius. And part of my love for it may be that it was never overplayed by radio.
my favorite group always has been, waiting in battersea for bus from work saw a pink pig flying over battersea power station ropes had got loose little did i know until brought album 6 months later there it was my claim to fame 1979
Such a different album by them. It was dark, but not psychedelic in the sense of their previous albums. An excellent album
As someone who listened to The Wall day of release, and was familiar with all the other albums, it surprised me when I got the compilation Echoes and realized I'd never heard Sheep before... I'd somehow missed Animals! So I listened. That was 2021.
