    I genuinely hate how much people dislike the game. It's not that I don't understand because I do. It is very repetitive and buggy. But dammit, the story is so fantastic. I found myself loving Lincoln Clay, John Donovan, and Burke. And Vito, of course. But I was so hooked into the story that the gameplay didn't bother me. The voice acting was phenomenal. The choice of music was phenomenal. It really was a fantastic game. It just had too many bugs and it was too repetitive. It hurts, man.

    I’ve always seen Mafia 3 as less of a Mafia game, but more of a Punisher game that we never got set in Louisiana, and I am a thousand percent ok with that. Also helps to boost this idea when you are able to add Punisher’s clothes in through mods.

    This game did something special for me. I play games regularly but I rarely focus on them more then youtube. I played the opening and usally when i would put google up and start watching youtube I didn't. I started loving all the details and keep changing up my playstyle. For one district i would be stealthy then the next i would go full rainbow. I know this is weird but usually when i hear racist stuff in games i brush it of but in Mafia 3 I started loving the people who didn't make fun of Lincon's skin colour. Also driving down a street with the street lights lighting up the street and my car. This game looks amazing in my opinion. The game did get repetitive with the districts but sort of like The last of us I played to get the cut scenes.
    The story is the reward.

    Hey man. Im playing mafia 3 right now and i cant believe how bad reviews were for this game. I think mafia is a very solid game, with good visuals, beautiful soundtrack, almost perfect driving and engaging gunplay. And setting... man, what could be better than vietnam veteran coming back and starts a war against mob, this is just a dope scenario, for me personally.
    Most people complaint about repetitive gameplay, but, as you mention in video, each business you need to takeover has the similar submissions but completly different main missions, with different locations and other stuff to do.
    It isnt perfect, but im enjoying it, love playing it.

    Maybe I’m just fanboying here, but I’ve seriously played though Mafia 3 (5 times, working on my 6th playthrough) more times than GTA V, (2 times, somewhere halfway through the 3rd playthrough. Now, I’ve played Red Dead Redemption about 7 times, but still. The story and tone had a way of sucking me in, and not letting me go. I had one friend who complained that there wasn’t a bunch of crazy “strangers and freaks” missions like in GTA or RDR. I asked him, “Your family was just murdered. Are you really going to run around doing random things for people in our town, or are you going to try to get some revenge?” Honestly, the story was so well written that, even after playing it start to finish 5 times, I still want to see Lincoln through his journey from start to finish.
    Also, for what it’s worth, I had it (on Xbox one) at launch. I experienced a few minor glitches, but nothing totally different than I’d expect to find in a GTA game. I should make a note, I did experience one crash, but that may have been my fault. (Possibly bumped the power button with my cord while standing up/moving and just not realized it.)
    I’m sad that this franchise probably won’t get another installment. Then again, I was also hoping to get a spin-off that tracked Donovan on his own mission to hunt down the.. well, I won’t spoil it. You know what I’m talking about, though.

      I could barely finish GTA V the first time and that's coming from someone who enjoyed nearly every other R* game. When I played Mafia 3 it became one of my favourite games ever to the point where I'm on my 5th playthrough now. Only game I like more is the first Red Dead Redemption.

    • @walicki123
      @walicki123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I also love Red Dead Redemption and Mafia 3, in my opinion they both have the same thing in common, they don't try to make the combat more realistic (which i didn't like in RDR2) or complicated than it should be and rather take an ''arcadey'' route. This way when you learn the few implemented mechanics (which in both cases are just plain brutal fun), it all just clicks and you feel like a badass that can dispatch enemies at a drop of a hat. It also helps that both characters have a rich backstory and no doubt just plainly look cool without being cliche.

    The people who made the most noise about how “repetitive” the game was are the same people who play COD every day. The same guns on the same maps doing the same thing every day. So if you enjoy the task you’re repeating, it’s a non-issue.

    • @rogueshay853
      @rogueshay853 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      Tbh it’s different. Multiplayer games are repetitive in nature. But the outcomes are different all the time. Your choices actually matter in you winning or not. Running the same missions over and over just for it to end the same way is boring

    • @Ward413
      @Ward413 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @@rogueshay853 That critique could apply to hundreds of single player games though, not specifically Mafia III. GTA V’s story is way more linear and repetitive but no one complained. At least each playtheough is different in Mafia III as you can decide who to hand off the rackets/districts to and in what order. You even get entirely different cutscenes depending on the order of capos you take down.
      I just feel Mafia III gets an undeserved stink on it especially since that Angry Joe douchebag made that ridiculous video bashing it when it came out which influenced a ton of people who now write it off based on someone else’s opinion. Now the game is overlooked by those people who may actually enjoy it because they just go, “Doesn’t that game suck? I heard it sucked.”

    • @butters9354
      @butters9354 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @Ward413 but the non linearity is the problem both mafia 1 and 2 were very linear and they benefited from this there levels are better designed and the shootouts more interesting same with gta5. 3 on the other hand is way to long and consists of doing the same thing over and over again in order to control the districts if the game was more linear like the first 2 it'd be better.

    • @Ward413
      @Ward413 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@butters9354 They certainly could have cut down on the racket damage mechanic, especially for new players who may not understand that some activities are a waste of time and don’t cause enough damage to the racket to justify doing. The devs tried to make it intuitive by making the size of the mission icon on the map
      correspond to how much damage that activity does to a racket but most players missed that. You can cause enough damage to a racket in ten minutes if you know which missions to do. You just have to ignore those tiny repetitive activities.
      I still think the repetitive critique is overstated when played correctly. Plus a linear story would have limited replay-ability. I like Mafia II’s story more and yet I’ve played Mafia III the most because each playthrough is different. So I don’t think the lack of linearity was an issue on its own as an open world did seem like the logic next step for the franchise but perhaps it could have been handled better. I still think the racket damage mechanic is novel and enjoyable; I just think a lot of players went on auto pilot and drove up to any icon they saw on their mini-map not realizing they may be wasting their time with small repetitive tasks you can completely ignore and instead focus on the larger stuff that causes significant damage.
      In fact, if you hover over an activity on the main map it even gives you a little breakdown of info like how much damage you’ll cause, the risk vs reward, etc. So the devs put the info there as I bet the repetition came up in QA/play testing but it seems it wasn’t enough.

    • @gamevidz8763
      @gamevidz8763 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s ok for linear games to be repetitive that’s expected. But open world games such as mafia shouldn’t be. That’s what made it terrible. Just like assassin’s creed 1. Open world but repetitive missions.

    I bought this game recently during the pandemic sale, and was expecting a mediocre game to waste time with. It is not a great game, especially compared to something like red dead 2. But among my constant cynicism if the game i always found myself wanting to keep playing it. As times passed after i beat it, the wisely reviled reputation is so uncalled for. I hate repetitive open world games like ubisofts library where you do constant repetitive copy paste missions. Ive come to realize the type of open world game mafia 3 is always compared to, are actually much worse than mafia 3. I went to replay this game recently on a whim, and I've come to realize this game IS more solid than people gave it credit for, and they eventually fixed a few problem areas with lacking content, like customization. It might be repetitive but every open world game is just as if not more so. At least this game's repetition is with the main gameplay, it's outstanding combat, and backed up with an even better story.

    This by far has to be the most shocking voice actor gig for Nolan North known for being the voice of Nathan Drake in the uncharted series, but he plays a mean nasty white supremacist personality Remy Duvall in Mafia 3 where he uses the N-word. Course he’s not like that in real life and this was just a job.

I remember when I first watched this review it was l finally someone who took the time to actually think critically about this game and not just agree with the rabid horde called the " gaming community ". Im glad i stumbled on this video. Mafia 3 isnt as bad as everyone says it is. I enjoyed the gameplay especially since i took down every racket using stealth which makes you plan out your approach. And the set piece of the world is great, you really feel like you are in the late 1960s during the peak of the civil rights movement. I kinda wish inatead of going after the mafia, Lincoln was growing the black mob with Sammy and Ellis.

    As an Anne Rice fan I never have been in New Orleans, but running around in New Bordeaux is the closest thing, I actually love the attention to detail that they did to the city, and now much more than Mafia II Empire Bay, most of the city is open to you, you can break in business if you need adrenaline patch or bullet proof vest or simply money.

    I kind of disagree with you with the Stone’s Unturned DLC. While I agree that it was weird in the context of the main game, I understand the build up to Donovan’s revelation. He is really regretful at not stopping Aldridge, knowing that he could doom the world as a result (as Aldridge could get away with the nuke).

    • @TheDiner50
      @TheDiner50 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I liked the DLC. Nothing to really complain about. I really do not understand the problem the video talks about. How Donovan act on his own instead of getting the military or whatever to stop the nuke? I mean it is a dam game. And really Donovan seems like he got some problem with his bosses and politics in general or something.
      It makes sense that the person setting this hole murder rampage to take over the city might have gotten fed up on how corrupt and pointless it is to trust anyone but yourself to do stuff right. I mean common he seem to be able to stop the nuke getting into the wrong hands since he can make a transport helicopter come and pick it up ones captured. He got connections and such. It is quite fun and interesting too. The woodo stuff is worse I think.

Unfortunately, for the next 10 hours the gameplay really let me down. As you said the game has a lot of good aspects but I do think a bit more character to the world itself was needed. Call me nitpicky, but it's immersion breaking when you walk into an intersection and are confronted by about 15 clones of an NPC

I'm playing mafia 3 now, in 2021, for the first time and I absolutely love it. I even don't mind the repetition of those side missions because I like how the simple stealth mechanic works and I prefer that option, instead of going guns blazing. Plus the main missions are great, the story is great and also the way they tell it. I had only a few bugs and about 2 glitches, which weren't game breaking so I moved on. All in all, I am very happy with the game and I hope another one to come.

    The distinctive glitches I found in Mafia 3 that stuck out the most was the fact the NPC's are suppose to dodge me in a speeding vehicle, but why are they leaving in front of the oncoming vehicles I'm driving if they are trying to avoid getting run over? Are they lemmings? The mixed reviews are properly certifiable, while the people in defense of Mafia 3 from the voice actors and some of the staff making a coddling argument saying that the reviewers including the angry gamer dude lambasted the game while other Mafia purists felt indifferent about an African-American protagonist when they are more comfortable with Italian characters in a mob game about the Italian mob. But Mafia 3 can be compared to a fraternity pledge punchbowl with a lot of boozed poured into it, but the end result is lacking substance and much to be desired. One of the unlockable skins in the Mafia 3 DLC sign of the times is Lincoln Clay gets to wear a motorcycle club biker cut, but there are no motorcycles in Mafia 3 which is disappointing, but he can wear an MC biker cut. It's pretty redundant in my opinion. And there's another glitch. When doing the errands for the underbosses in Mafia 3, for example, when I do an errand involving stealing trucks from the Dixie Mafia containing contraband for Alma, it turns out there is no truck to pick up, and I drove out in the bayou for nothing. And I'm with you on this for those who said the game is repetitive, so is every racing game, and other genres of there is repetition. Most of those reviewers have agendas much like mainstream Media news outlets do. At the time I am writing this comment, I had already played my second round of Mafia 3, and I intend to go for a third-round once I get an upgraded video card as well as other requirements to play the game as it is intended. I'm playing it on a GeForce GTX 650 which is not meeting the requirements to play Mafia III. And that is sad. Hopefully hangar 13 has wised up because they are working on Mafia 4 which is going to be a prequel to Mafia 2 in the timeline.

  • @RealM722

    Phenomenal review man. I watch a lot of these critiques by larger channels and I've gotta say this is really damn solid. I love hearing passionate defenses that go against the more mainstream opinion of games. I really like Mafia 3 for it's willingness to go head-on into some more uncomfortable subjects that other open world games avoid (as you pointed out, the setting in the South, police response times, etc...)
    This really got me thinking on what an incredible marvel it would be if a big-time studio tried to make a dedicated game to the full extent of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. I'm talking about playing as a black man and being able to visit famous speeches with the enormous crowds for MLK or Malcolm X, detail other black figures from Fred Hampton to the assassination of Robert Kennedy. Hell, go all out in terms of being a historic / educational artifact detailing events like the Letter from a Birmingham Jail or playing as a protestor dealing with the incredible ruthless and barbaric tactics used to suppress riots back then. Hell - maybe I'm thinking too big but also the religious tension between the Nation of Islam and political divisiveness (Lyndon B. Johnson, Vietnam War, to George Wallace getting 10 million Americans to vote for hi by being pro segregation).
    A lot of this is inspired by Mafia 3. There's such an untapped market here as opposed to doing another game in LA/NY and playing it safe. The "backlash" from the gaming community may be there for detailing such subjects but I'd love to see it one day.

    It doesn't bother me at all. But with all the time spent building this game, you would think the developers would take the time to put Lincoln's scar on the correct side of his head. He is shot in the left side, yet when he wakes up, the scar is on the right. I do not understand how someone who calls themselves a professional can miss something like this. Then again, the awful mission design and sky box made the cut, so it doesn't come as that big of a surprise.

    Found this late but love it.
    Have played M3 a total of 421 hours because it is my most played PS game; an African American gamer like myself automatically will fall in love with this story, because it reverberates on so many levels.
    I loved your insights: well done character analyses! Fantastic…except I disagree with your ending interpretations.
    Vito doesn’t deserve the whole enchilada: why, because of his sad story in Mafia 2? Burke and Cassandra give Lincoln a heck of a lot more in weapons, cars, and precious phone line manipulation to keep him alive. Vito makes great wisecracks, and his muscle is OK, but the Night Hawk rifle and the other gun are…meh.
    Lincoln is a criminal, plain and simple: he helped Sammy kill the Haitians and if we really think about it, he doesn’t mention that he’s wanting to leave but once. Leo Gallante offered Lincoln SAL’S DEAL of paying the Commission 20% of his take. Sammy didn’t have any deal with the mob, just debt with Sal, and it shows again how Blacks were always kept in a position that kept us never getting ahead thanks to lopsided deals. Linoln staying made perfect sense to me, as he fulfilled Sammy’s dream of them having ownership of their own thing.

Loved how it featured other factions like the black mob offering a variety of things. Lincoln Clay was awesome & it had fantastic writing the best in the series. The best stories are the ones that always evolve & grow.. & it just featuring the Italian mob imo is stagnating the franchise. The little things like having a shoot-out at your under bosses safehouse & radio stopping in tunnels was a nice touch. I just had a really good time with the story of this game & with the DLC its a solid 8.5/10 for me

    Great video. You convinced me to give Mafia 3 a shot so I'll be playing it within the next few months.
    One way I think Mafia 3 was negatively affected that you didn't really bring up is that, let's be real, a lot of the gaming community is racist. I think a lot of the willingness to make Mafia 3 a punching bag was due to the main character being black, being able to kill KKK members as him, and have racism be a key part in the game's narrative. Mind you, I'm saying this as a white guy myself.
    I think if a larger portion of game critics and "celebrity gamers" were black, then the game would have gotten more recognition.

    • @platypus88
      @platypus88 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think it's less racism more the politically charged nature of the game. I think a lot of gamers like to switch their brain off(as do I usually) when playing these sorts of games so they ignore or actively dislike that sort of attention to detail and focus in a games story. It's a shame cause the damn good writing and world building is what makes mafia 3 such an enjoyable romp by giving so much more context to the over the top violent rampages you commit so often in the game

    Playing this recently shines a light on how underrated this game is, for the better aspects of it. When playing it, I did have times when the act of clearing districts felt annoying, but the story beats I did get when clearing them made it worth it to me. The DLCs for the game that came out I feel dont have this issue, but I can see why it could be frustrating to some.. If a mafia 4 ever comes out I hope they find a better way to balance all of the game. I think the recent defintive edition shows that if hangar 13 does make a mafia 4 they might be a lot more understanding of it and what made the older games good as well, and more full to play.
