  • I've been writing about Dark Souls for nearly a year and this is the end result. I could ramble about the games design, lore, and aesthetic for hours on end and that is exactly what I ended up doing here with this comprehensive review and analysis of my favorite game ever. Hope you enjoy this long winded video filled with, rats, covenants, and quite a bit of Gwyndolin.

A small detail but worth mentioning. After you free Lautrec from his cell, you can speak to him at Firelink Shrine before fighting the Gargoyles, which will enable him as a summon for the fight alongside Solaire. It helps build a rapport with him, just to make his actions later all the more impactful. Most players go straight to the boss after freeing him though, so not many people know about it.

I love the emphasis you put on the soundscape. I recently did a ER run without music and while it's still good it doesn't hit as hard as previous Fromsoft games. Which is fine, ER is not DS or BB but it shines a light on how incredible DS1 was sonically.
Sidenote: There's a a POV video of a person walking from one end of the ER map to another, which inspired me to play the game with no music because I felt the music ruined the vibe (though many in the comments disagreed lol) Also your style and speech remind me of Running Shine. • @colbyboucher6391

I love how us DS1 fans are so absurdly passionate about it. The most frustrating thing about it is that people who came in with newer games in the series seem like they've almost been trained to not look so far into things... because in the later games (maybe barring Bloodborne and _sometimes_ Elden Ring) that won't get you anywhere. So you try telling them about why the first Dark Souls is the real masterpiece and it just wooshes right past them. Because that can't possibly be true, right? DS1's narrative is tightly wrapped in a bow for us and I can't think of any real plot holes. It perfectly straddles the line between being explicit and relying on inference. From was putting thought into stuff as simple as how the direction an enemy is looking in, or some chests hidden near a group of NPCs, can be storytelling tools. From's most clever trick was ensuring that most people not understanding what's going on is a _valid way for the story to go._ Most Chosen Undead are just some chumps that got told to go ring some bells and got manipulated all the way to "oh, shit, I'm on fire now".
What's even worse to me is that the _process_ that led us to understand everything is lost. People just get their lore from Vaati. It's actually sort of heartwarming that people like Quelaag are actually showing the process in Elden Ring's case, letting people figure things out for themselves, showing how the process of discovery is half of the fun rather than just dropping authoritative "this is what happened" videos that lead half of the audience to think they're just making shit up.

    • @yuzunatsuyoshi501
      @yuzunatsuyoshi501 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

Exactly, same things can be told about some other early games as well. Great storytelling. Nowadays people don't really do games justice by looking everything up via either guides or videos, or at some points even the game itself is lacking the storytelling for the sake of having more content. That's not how it was supposed to be played - You, the protagonist, has to realize and explore everything for yourself, make your own picture of things, not listen to some other narrations being told to you. Shortsightedness at its best. How people find games enjoying being guided around by the nose is beyond me, that's not an adventure at this point, braindead combat and looting to complete some "OP" build and be cool like everyone else.

I haven't seen your video and I'm nodding, already. I have played thousands of games in my 35 year old life, and many of them have been amazing, 10-out-of-10 experiences, but this game is just the Messiah of gaming, it came down from the skies when gaming was possibly at it's lamest ever...and reminded us the way. There's nothing that can even come near it's excellence. I've replayed it three times in a row after four or five years, recently, and it's as fresh as the first day. It still makes me feel the same...it still functions flawlessly, it still lives rent-free in my head forever. It is just gaming perfected, either you play it or it plays you.
It is simply the G.O.A.T, and I'm fairly convinced I will never play a better game.

I really enjoy a video that’s not complaining and is just kinda vibing on how great the game is. There’s something so wholesome to it.
I have an understanding of the deeper lore, my own opinions on Miyazaki’s more complex philosophy slowly explored in every title. I love them all. But there’s something just magical about someone having a great time with it and not shitting on another game in the series or being miserable. We can all learn a lesson in finding our Sun.

I have always held Dark Souls as my favorite game ever since I first played it. It is impossible to explain why that is, since you could easily make compelling arguments against the game. (like Lost Izalith being bad)
But no other game has had such a profound impact on me. There will never be a perfect game but the next best thing is a game that changes you.

It deserves the praise ER gets as a near perfect masterpiece

Ever since my first play through, Ds1 has been my favorite game of all time. I can’t exactly describe the feeling I got from it. For some reason I had an odd since of nostalgia, even though it was the first Fromsoft game i’ve ever played. This game will never be topped in my opinion.

my favorite thing about fromsoft games are the silly hybrid animals, like the frograys or the horsegoat torrent, or the rolling deergoats in limgrave, or the snailsnakes later in elden ring. There's just something so silly and novel about really normal and boring animals being combined into a strange but still pretty mundane creature.
Also, my favorite part was you trying to speed explain pinwheels lore.

Something I do miss in Elden Ring is the great ambient soundscapes Dark Souls has from diegetic sounds, stuff like the bird chirping in Undead Parish, Darkroot Garden, etc. Don't get me wrong, I love Elden Ring's ambient music, but there is something special about the way Dark Souls approached it. However there is one spot in Shadow of the Erdtree (in the southeast part of the map) that might even top Dark Souls in that way.

One problem with the intro cutscene is the line "and the dragons were no more", which suggests they were extinct with the exception of Seath. Yet we see many draconic figures throughout the game (the Hellkite Drake, the Wyverns at Valley of Drakes, the Undead Dragons, the hydra which drops Dragon Scales) and I've seen more than once new players getting confused as soon as they meet the drake in the Undead Burg. And then we find out dragons like Kalameet and the Everlasting Dragon from Ash Lake were still around, maybe even more. The Japanese subtitles are much more clear, saying "and the dragons were finally defeated". I don't know why they made this change.
One criticism I've seen abour Oscar's infodump is that his family has a long ass saying. Just "thou who art undead art chosen" would be more appropriate for a family saying. So maybe they could have described that differently. Maybe a passage from a scripture? The saying does instigate the Undead to go wake up Frampt and fulfill the god's agenda. Maybe the word choice makes more sense in Japanese?
There is evidence to say that Nameless rebelled after Gwyn went to link the flame. He left the Sunlight Blade miracle as a farewell gift at Gwyn's tomb. There are more hints at this, but I can't remember them now. This would mean he was banished by his siblings and maybe the other gods of Gwyn's clan when they were still around (Flann, Lloyd, etc). My headcanon has it that it had something to do with the plot against the gods. Former dragonslayers and allies of Gwyn (his firstborn, his friend Havel) turning against the gods, maybe realizing the inherent problems with linking the flame and perpetuating the cycle of light x dark. They sided with the dragons, beings originally prior to and beyond the disparity of life and death. No wonder we find a Havel warrior at Archdragon Peak.
The channeler probably is at the Parish looking for test subjects. I say this because, if you kill Petrus, thus preventing him from killing Rhea, she eventually disappears from the Undead Parish and then you can find her in the archive's prison, but hollowed. She probably was snatched by the channeler. We know the pale drake likes to abduct and mess with pious maidens (Rhea from the Way of White, the Pisachas as former servants of Gwynevere).
